Dear Vinings/Smyrna Neighbors, 2020 will mark the third anniversary of the launch of My Vinings/Smyrna, and whether you pick up a copy from one of the numerous neighborhood businesses we partner with or you are a resident of one of the 20,000 homes that receive copies in the mail, I hope you are enjoying each issue. Every time I read the magazine, I am always excited to see new faces and learn about new places and events I want to check out. And speaking of new faces, our goal in 2020 is to bring you more stories about the many people in our community who serve us all. From “I want to first responders and owners of family businesses to teachers and check out Vinings coaches, we will celebrate the people who make Vinings/Smyrna School of Art to a better place to live. 5 Ways to Improve Your Back Health in 2020 The new year is off to a fast start and many of us made resolutions for 2020. Maybe you planned to get in shape or give up a bad habit. If you’re suffering from back pain, you can make a few simple changes in your lifestyle to help decrease or alleviate your pain. Here are some tips for a healthier back in 2020: Exercise Exercise improves your health in many ways including the health of your spine. One cause of back pain is weakness in the “core” muscles that support the spine. These muscles are small and not as strong as the larger muscles, which is why they are so prone to injuries. Strengthening these muscles can help prevent back injuries. Sit-ups, crunches and push-ups can help improve your core strength. Other options include stretching and yoga. Not only will these activities strengthen your core muscles, but they will also improve your flexibility, helping you be less susceptible to injuries. As with any exercise regimen, check with your physician or spine specialist before you begin to ensure these exercises are safe for you. Healthy Body Weight Staying fit is crucial to all aspects of your health, including the health of your spine. When you’re carrying extra weight, especially around the torso, those small muscles around your spine have to work harder just to keep you upright. While our weight is something many of us struggle with, if you can maintain your ideal weight you can decrease your risk for back pain.
Proper Lifting Technique Using proper lifting technique can help decrease back pain. Use the big, powerful muscles in your legs to lift, not the small muscles in your back. When you need to lift something, squat down until your hips are parallel to the object’s center of gravity. By doing so, you will force your leg muscles to do most of the work, allowing you to keep your back straight as you lift. Stay Hydrated Drinking plenty of water will help prevent back pain by maintaining the size of the fluid-filled discs between your vertebrae. These discs are responsible for absorbing much of the shock your spine experiences during the day. If you are not properly hydrated, the discs can become smaller and offer less support to your spine. Over time this can lead to back pain.
of negative ways, and stopping tobacco products may help prevent back pain. Smoking can lead to back pain by restricting the blood vessels, cutting off the blood supply to your cells. In order to stay healthy and heal quickly, your cells need a steady supply of oxygen and other materials, which they extract from the bloodstream. When you quit tobacco, your blood flow is restored and your cells become healthier. So if you do sustain an injury to your back, you may heal more quickly. Of course, quitting smoking may be easier said than done. If this is one of your resolutions, please consult a physician who can recommend some options that will make it safer and easier for you to quit tobacco. The physicians at Resurgens Spine Center hope you have a healthy 2020.

Luisa Hammett FOOD ARTIST • PEDIATRIC DIETITIAN • CHICKEN FARMER By Barbra Buoy
Originally from Colombia, South America, fashion and food blogger Luisa Hammett moved to Atlanta eight years ago to attend Georgia State University and earn her master’s in Clinical Nutrition. Along the way, she created the mega-popular blog, Peaches to Pearls, met her husband, started a family, got a job as a pediatric dietitian at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta … and even bought a brood of baby chicks.
Q
How did you decide to marry fashion and food on your blog, Peaches to Pearls?
Luisa Hammett: I started my blog when I was in graduate school. It was called Let’s Make It Better Blog and focused on food and nutrition. I thought it would be a creative way to show everyone what I was learning about nutrition. But when I started posting pictures on Instagram, I would get lots of questions about my fashion. So, about a year in, I decided to rebrand. That’s when I created Peaches to Pearls, which is more of a lifestyle brand that combines food and fashion.
LH: I would definitely say my smoothie bowls are the staple of my brand when it comes to eating pretty. I incorporate a variety of different fruits, vegetables, and grains. They go hand-in-hand with my style and fashion.
Q
We heard you recently started raising chickens. Could you tell us a little bit about them?
LH: Last April, we purchased four little chicks, all female. I specifically picked chickens that produce colorful eggs. One breed is called an Easter Egger. They lay these beautiful blue and green eggs. So, even my chickens’ eggs fit into my brand!

Q
What are your favorite spots in Vinings and Smyrna?
LH: I really like Wade’s Fine Eatery And Good Time Emporium in Smyrna. It’s very family friendly. They have a beautiful patio outside and you can bring your dog. My other favorite is The Battery Atlanta because you have so many dining options. For shopping, I love Waiting On Martha Home at Vinings Jubilee. peachestopearls.com

Eric Singer MOV I E EX TRA • ENTERTAINME NT E XP E RT • TE NNI S P L AY E R By Barbra Buoy
Eric Singer could easily win any movie and televisionthemed trivia contest. He’s a bona fide movie buff who turned his hobby into an income stream. When he isn’t working at his day job as a measure technician, he’s mingling with major actors like Paul Rudd, Bill Paxton, and Michael Keaton as an extra cast member and stand-in. To date, he’s appeared in more than 60 movies, television shows, and pilots.
Q
How did you start working as an extra in movies and television? What are some of the films you’ve appeared in?
Eric Singer: I kind of fell into it by accident. I’ve been an entertainment geek since I was a kid. In 2009, I randomly met a guy while I was working on a radio promotion in Gwinnett County. Turns out he’d been acting as a movie extra for 12 years. I asked him where he found his gigs. He said Craigslist, which I always thought was a scam, but that’s where I found my very first job on Tyler Perry’s show “Meet the Browns.” Now, the vast majority of jobs are posted on Facebook. I’ve worked as a stand-in for Jon Favreau on “Ant-Man,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Q
What do you like most about working as an extra?
ES: It’s still kind of fun and neat to meet people I’ve grown up watching on screen. Also, it’s a very small part of it but you’re creating art, even if you’re just the guy eating in the background.
Q
Out of all the films and television shows you’ve appeared in, which is your favorite?
ES: Definitely “Avengers: Endgame.” That was awesome. It felt so cool being a part of it. One of the challenges with the nondisclosure agreement was not being able to say anything about a major plot change that I knew about for a year.
Q
What are your favorite spots in Smyrna?
ES: I really like Atkins Park Tavern. My favorite dish is the brown sugar bourbon-glazed Drunken Pork Tenderloin. My favorite workout is playing tennis at Tolleson Park Tennis Center. For shopping, my go-to is Goodwill for DVDs.

Donna Drakes ROTARY CLUB PRESIDENT • PHILANTHROPIST • NEW YORK TRANSPLANT By Barbra Buoy
Donna Drakes has always taken pride in helping others. As president of the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland and the executive director of H.E.R.O. for Children, the only organization in Georgia focused on quality of life care for children with HIV/AIDS, she lives out her purpose every day. Originally from New York, Donna moved to Georgia in 2007 and joined the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland in 2009.
Q
Have you always been interested in helping others?
Q
What more can you tell us about Rotary?
Q
What service project is your Club working on now?
Q
Do you have any favorite restaurants or shops in Vinings you’d like to tell us about?
Donna Drakes: I’m a social worker by trade, so I’ve dedicated my career to service. It’s always been at the forefront of how I live my life. When I was in high school and college, I tutored children from underserved communities. My mom was a nurse, so I watched her serve people and took a lot of guidance from her. We’re definitely a service family.
DD: Rotary is an international service organization with 1.2 million members around the world. We work in a variety of areas such as peace and conflict resolution, and maternal and child health. My club, Vinings Cumberland, has 67 members and is always looking for new members with a passion for public service. We try to do at least one service project each month. We also partner with other nonprofit organizations to help people in the community. People join the Rotary Club for service and community, but they really stay for the relationships. I’ve developed relationships with people I probably never would have met otherwise. That’s one of the wonderful byproducts of people who come together in service.
DD: I love the salads and seafood at SOHO American Bistro for dinner. For breakfast, I like Another Broken Egg Cafe. I have lots of business meetings there. One of my favorite places to shop is Hemline in Vinings Jubilee. viningsrotary.org

GARAGE DOORS
Q
When are do-it-yourself repairs not an option?
A
A garage door system operates under high tension, and can be extremely dangerous. Unless you are performing basic lubrication of moving parts, programming remotes or replacing batteries, any repairs needed to a garage door should be left to a trained professional. John Nale

Q
How often do I need to clean out my gutters?
A
Most homeowners clean their gutters one to four times per year. We recommend cleaning typical gutter systems twice a year. The most important Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk times of the year to clean your gutters are spring and fall, as leaves and debris pile up most during these seasons due to thunderstorms in the spring or foliage in the fall.

ROOFING
WINDOW REPLACEMENT
Q
What roof upkeep should I be aware of for the winter and what is one thing I can do for all seasons?
It is important to inspect your flashing. Flashing is an extra-protective part of your roof designed to direct water to run off the slope of the roof. In all seasons, we suggest keeping your Chad Cruce gutters clear so that your gutters do not clog up with debris. The added debris can lead to standing water, which can cause damage to your fascia, soffit, and siding.

SIDING
Q
What can I do to avoid warping or buckling?
A
First things first. It is invaluable that siding is installed to the direct specifications provided by the manufacturer. Also, ensure the structural support that your home’s siding is Charlie Dallavalle nailed to is perfectly vertical. Regular maintenance is also a must. Keep your wooden siding painted and sealed to avoid exposure and deterioration.

FLOORING INSTALLATION
Q
How do I know which waterproofing product(s) I need?
A
Before rushing to purchase waterproofing products that are available at your local home improvement store or even on late-night infomercials, we always recommend having a professional waterproofing specialist evaluate your specific issue to fully explain the causes and explain the different options for repair. Some repairs can be as simple as Derek Ritchie sealing a crack, while others may require a drainage system on the outside or inside of your home.

CONCRETE
SHOWER ENCLOSURES
Q
I’m going back and forth on what type of flooring I want in my house. What are three things I need to know in order to make a decision?
Consider your lifestyle and maintenance needs. Some floors require far more upkeep than others. Think about how long you will be in your home and choose a floor that will still look Elisabeth Stubbs nice when you put your home on the market. Realistic budgets are also a must. Choose as nice a flooring as your budget will allow as it will perform better and last longer than bargain flooring.
It depends on where you see the leak. If water is coming under or around the shower door into your bathroom, then a shower door technician should be able to fix the problem with a new silicone application or new sweeps [vinyl sealing]. If the water is spotting the ceiling below or appearing on the paint adjacent to your shower, then the David Drexler tile or pan may not be sealed properly. A tile professional or plumber may be required. A Drexler representative would be happy to help diagnose your leak.

WINDOW COVERINGS
Q
Do cracks in my concrete always mean foundation issues?
A
No, it is possible the cracks are superficial but do not self-evaluate your situation. It’s preferable to have a professional assess your problem to pinpoint your specific Michael Cangemi solution. Most good contractors will provide an evaluation and free estimate.
