From the Editor Help with math project? Check. Get the kids to rehearsal on time? Check. Review homework? Check. With school underway, there are basic tasks that need to be completed. And as the parent, it’s your responsibility to make sure that everything gets done. But sometimes, things fall through the cracks and you just can’t possibly do it all. That’s when standout teachers from our neighborhood schools like the five we’re featuring in this issue come into play. We asked and you answered. And thanks
my
We salute those making a difference in our community. From providing an extra word of encouragement to sparking the imagination, our neighborhood kids are pushed to new heights thanks to magnificent mentors like these! If your favorite teacher wasn’t highlighted in this issue, share more about him or her on our @MyVinings/Smyrna Facebook page. We’d love to hear how this person is influencing your child’s life.

Who the Heck is Pace? Article Article by by Gillian Gillian Greer Greer of of the the Vinings Vinings Historic Historic Preservation Preservation Society Society This This piece piece of of Vinings Vinings History History is is brought brought to to you you by by The The Christine Christine Bradley Bradley Team Team
Have you ever wondered why everywhere you turn there is a street, building or something with Pace in the name? It’s all about Hardy Pace, the founder of Vinings!
Hardy was an adventurous entrepreneur who moved his wife and small children from his father’s plantation in Putnam County, Georgia to settle in the vicinity of West Paces Ferry Road. Hardy amassed extensive land holdings through the Georgia Land Lottery of 1832 and is reputed to have owned more than 10,000 acres of land from Smyrna to Buckhead. The area was then called Crossroads, which soon became Pace’s Crossing, with Hardy being the first postmaster. He built a 17 room home at the foot of Vinings Mountain where he also ran a tavern for travelers passing through. By the early 1830s Hardy established a successful ferry service located near the site of Canoe Restaurant today. He also built a gristmill along the river.
Thus our street names, Paces Ferry Road and Paces Mill Road! In fact, anything around Atlanta name Pace is so named because of Hardy Pace. With the winds of the Civil War, Hardy and his family left for Milledgeville and Sherman and his troops moved into Vinings, headquartering in Pace’s home. Hardy’s home was burned to the ground upon their departure. After the war, Hardy’s son, Solomon, returned to Vinings and finding the family home in ruins, built his house on the same site as Hardy’s. This is the Solomon and Penelopy Pace House that stands on Paces Mill Road today. The house is on The National Register of Historic Places. Hardy and his wife are buried in the family cemetery on top of Mt. Wilkinson, formerly Vinings Mountain.

We take pride in our American-made roots, and aren’t afraid to wear it on our sleeves. After all, before making fine spirits, that’s exactly what we did, we wore it on our sleeves. hen Gina Bridges began selling real estate in Smyrna back in 1990, she never dreamed she was founding a family business that would touch so many lives and create such a dynamic resource for her hometown. Yet,
meeting her at the Keller Williams Cityside building, which she owns with other individuals, and talking with her and her daughter Ginka, they both exude a confidence and joy in their commitment to serving their neighbors.
FALL 2017
In the last few years, Ginka has begun walking in her mother’s shoes. “Actually, I’ve probably been selling with mom since I was 5,” chuckles Ginka, recalling riding along with her mother to view properties and planting signs in yards. However, she didn’t immediately pursue the same career herself. “I graduated from Boston College and stayed there to work in the apparel

“I’ve been in Smyrna since I worked for Eastern [Air Lines]. In fact, when they moved their office here, there were cows in the field across from the building! I fell in love with the area,” Gina says. Once she earned her real estate license, she decided to focus on local properties. “Smyrna is a great city. It’s always been very wellmanaged with a strong budget and facilities,” Gina touts. “There are parks everywhere!”
8/21/17 9:47 AM
The Bridges’ approach remains steady—always guiding clients to stay on a budget, balance realistic needs, and respect long-term financial goals. “Working with an agent who has ample training gives an element of trust because we really know what we are doing,” Ginka advises. That trust resonates with the clients who consistently turn to Team Bridges. Gina elaborates, “We’re selling houses with the next generation, including clients’ kids who have grown up and are homeowners. In some cases, we work with entire extended families. We’ve built trusted relationships. Our clients become our friends and neighbors.” Gina honors her deep appreciation for those relationships through active involvement in the community. Whether serving at church, championing growth at the Smyrna Business Association or promoting projects for Keep Smyrna Beautiful, Gina works tirelessly to help foster Smyrna’s development. She recognizes the trend of metro Atlanta’s commuter culture now transitioning into a culture of community where people live, work, and raise families in a cohesive neighborhood environment. And, she’s proud to be part of that legacy for Smyrna.

When the mother and daughter team are off-the-clock, they enjoy dining out at Marlow’s Tavern. ANNUAL PUMPKIN PARTY ON OCT. 14 Team Bridges conjures extra Smyrna spirit in October when they put on an annual Pumpkin Patch & Fall Festival event. “My birthday is in October and I’ve always loved Halloween,” Gina Bridges reveals. One year, she delivered pumpkins to client neighborhoods as part of a marketing campaign. The note attached to the fruit said, “Don’t let your next real estate transaction be scary!” And with that, the response was incredible and the pumpkin project quickly became tradition. As the project grew, Gina turned the annual treat into a community event, setting up a free pumpkin patch for a day each October. Games and activities were added along the way until her “pumpkin day” morphed into a full-blown, free fall festival. “We have a blast with this every year! We want everyone to come out, have fun and get to know each other.” With about 100 kids in attendance, this family affair is filled with goodie bags, snow cones, a bouncy house, and more. Oct. 14 from 10am-2pm at 3964 Atlanta Rd. (on the corner of Atlanta and Lee roads).

FALL 2017
The team stays true to their mission to uphold a “Tradition of Excellence” through any changes in the marketplace. And, the real estate game certainly has changed. “Technology puts listings out there instantaneously. The property must be ready. It’s all about the pictures,” Gina notes. “Contracts and paperwork are easier now. But, we have less interaction with other agents and I do miss that.”

industry.” By 2010, Ginka and her husband, contractor Benard Sogja, moved back to Smyrna. She continued in apparel while also assisting her mother, soon discovering that she shared an enthusiasm for real estate. So, she and Benard joined the Gina Bridges Home Team full time, rounding out the talented group, which has always functioned as one big happy family.

By Stacy Moser It might be news to some that The Home Depot doesn’t just enable homeowners with every DIY tool under the sun. They give back to the community through The Home Depot Foundation.
Q
What does working with the Foundation entail?
As executive director of the Foundation, I’m responsible for all of The Home Depot’s philanthropies and our volunteer force, called Team Depot. Two of our core values are doing the right thing and giving back. Team Depot employees volunteer in their communities to assist with home repair and home-building projects to improve the lives of veterans and to aid communities affected by natural disasters. I hear over and over that they want to be good neighbors where they live and work. It’s part of our culture and who we are.
Q
On a national level and here in Atlanta, we partner with nonprofits, like Meals on Wheels, to identify veterans’ needs out in the community. We work with the Gary Sinise Foundation, which builds specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans. One particular Smyrna project recently helped Cedric King, who lost both of his legs while serving in the Army in Afghanistan. In April, our foundation granted $360,000 to the Northwest Metro Atlanta Habitat for Humanity to complete critical home repairs and build new homes for veterans in that community. And last January, when a tornado ripped through Albany, Georgia, we sent over 150 associates to be boots on the ground there to help sift through belongings and help victims figure out what their next steps would be.
Q
When you aren’t planning The Home Depot’s next philanthropic project, do you head home to work on a DIY project?
We say that The Home Depot’s customers are either Do-It-Yourselfers or Do-It-For-Me types. I am definitely a “do-it-for-me” customer! The Home Depot has been a good influence on me—I’m more handy now!
Q
What are your favorite community spots?
I love to spend time with my family at Smyrna Market Village and Vinings Jubilee. I’m a native Atlantan and I love Smyrna because it’s a great place to raise a family! Corporate.HomeDepot.com/Community

YOGI • FORMER PRO BASKETBALL PLAYER • HEALTH FOOD ENTHUSIAST
By Stacy Moser
When talking about his initial impression of the practice of yoga, Jason Anderson shrugs his shoulders. “I thought it was just stretching,” he admits. “I thought it was strictly to improve your body.” But now? “I now know yoga is about training your body to work as one with your mind and spirit.” The 6-foot-5-inch former International Basketball Federation player says he had gotten to the point where playing ball wasn’t fun anymore. “I was ready for something new. I tried some yoga classes and really got into it.” With characteristic determination, he retired his basketball shoes and went on to embrace a new season in his life, which required no shoes, just a yoga mat. After being formally trained (a 500-hour commitment) to meet Yoga Alliance Registry Standards, he has become an E-RYT, one of the top credentials earned by yoga teachers. “I came to realize that yoga’s concepts apply to everything in life. Like in basketball—the mind must focus in the moment. You can’t be concerned about what happened earlier or what might happen in the future. You can’t be affected by the crowd or a screaming coach.” His message is simple: Observe what’s going on around you before reacting. “You can be aware of something that might make you angry, but that doesn’t mean you YOU CAN BE AWARE OF SOMETHING have to be angered. You can relax your body and THAT MIGHT MAKE YOU ANGRY, BUT use the energy for something more productive. If THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO you choose to respond to something, do so in a BE ANGERED. RELAX YOUR BODY AND composed manner.”
[
[
In July, he and two other instructors partnered with yoga teacher Miriam Frost to open Stellar Power Yoga, a 1,470-square-foot studio in the River Village Shopping Center on Cobb Parkway. “Our instructors don’t just focus on yoga’s physicality—we incorporate the mind and body. Our space is quiet and beautiful,” he says proudly. More secrets to maintaining his healthy lifestyle? He shops at Goodness Grocery for protein supplements and swims often at Windy Hill Athletic Club in Vinings. Stellar-PowerYoga.com

USE THE ENERGY FOR SOMETHING MORE PRODUCTIVE.
Jason was tapped during the Atlanta Hawks’ 20142015 season to coach the team in yoga. He knew the players were naturally competitive. “I took them away from goal-oriented behavior. I didn’t want them to think, ‘I have to get this pose.’ The pose is there to allow you to meditate. Your true competitor lives inside your own skin—your most formidable opponent is insecurity. Yoga teaches you to overcome that, to respond differently to the world and be confident.”

Colon Cancer Screening
Saves Lives Having a colonoscopy isn’t something people get excited about, but preventing colon cancer before it starts should be. Colon cancer is ranked as the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., and one in 20 people will develop it in their lifetime. But, when detected in its early stages during a colonoscopy, colon cancer is one of the most highly treatable and preventable cancers. In fact, research has shown that many colon cancer deaths could have been prevented with a screening colonoscopy.
FAQ: Common Questions About Colonoscopy Screenings Can you reduce your risk of getting colon cancer? To reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer, know your family’s cancer history and follow the recommended guidelines to schedule a colon cancer screening. Don’t smoke and maintain a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables. If you experience symptoms, don’t ignore them – make an appointment to see your physician. What is a colonoscopy? A colonoscopy is considered the single best method for detecting and preventing colon cancer. The procedure is performed under light sedation and allows a trained gastroenterologist to look at the inner lining of your large intestine – or colon. The physician uses a thin, flexible, lighted instrument called a colonoscope to visually inspect your colon for inflamed tissue, ulcers, bleeding and any abnormal growths (polyps). Not all polyps found during a screening are precancerous or cancerous, but over time, they can grow and become cancerous. So when polyps are found, they are removed at the same time to prevent cancer from forming. How long does the procedure take? The entire process – from check-in to check-out – typically takes about two hours. A colonoscopy itself usually takes about 25 to 30 minutes. You should plan to rest for several hours after the procedure. When should you get screened? Because the risk of getting colon cancer increases with age and the disease often doesn’t cause symptoms until it is advanced, screening colonoscopies are recommended for every adult beginning at age 50 and at age 45 for African-Americans.* For those with a family history of the disease, or other risk factors, screening could start even earlier. For example, if your mother or father was diagnosed with colon cancer at the age of 50, you should be screened at 40. Screening every 10 years is usually the recommendation, unless you’re at a higher risk for colon cancer. Talk with your physician to understand your risk and the guidelines you should follow for testing. *American Cancer Society
The board-certified physicians at Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates (AGA) perform this procedure regularly at AGA-affiliated outpatient endoscopy centers across metro Atlanta, as well as area hospitals. Because early detection and removal of polyps during a colonoscopy can actually prevent the disease, screening colonoscopies are recommended for everyone beginning at age 50 and younger for those with a family history or other risk factors. While there is evidence that more people are getting screened than in previous years, one in three adults ages 50 or older are not getting this life-saving test. If it’s time for your screening colonoscopy and you’re in good health, you may be able to schedule your procedure directly – without a pre-procedure visit. When you make your appointment, ask about our Direct Access Program.

Top Teachers Make The Grade
Standout Educators Receive An A-Plus For Their Commitment To Our Kids

n a refrigerator magnet near you: “When teachers enjoy teaching, kids just know.” Isn’t that the truth? Think back to your years in school and your mind probably stops at a handful of teachers who clearly were there because they enjoyed inspiring you to do your best—to push past your fears and try. We talked to these highly effective Vinings/Smyrna teachers to find out how they communicate their inspiration to students. (And their students just know.)
“All children have a problem, a worry or a battle in some aspect of life, whether with themselves or others,” Laura Szyperski admits. “I think their social and emotional development is equally as important as their academic development at

He works with other teachers to incorporate their curriculums into his drama class where the motto is life skills through stage skills. “We do things like examine social studies topics through puppet shows. I
use performance opportunities to impact my students’ academic and personal lives.” His goal is
to help the quiet introverts in his class feel just as successful as the boisterous extroverts. “I’m determined to help sculpt a great future for these kids,” he says. “That’s what motivates me to put in the late nights and early mornings.”
Wynter Whitley
St. Benedict’s Episcopal School 1st Grade Lead Teacher Wynter Whitley knows a little something about teamwork. “I played collegiate basketball and played professionally overseas, so I’m used to being on a team,” she explains, saying her teaching method is just like that of a coach. “I try to teach to each individual student—while at the same time teaching to the entire class, even when it comes to celebrating or disciplining

she says. “I have a constant smile on my face with this age group; they keep me laughing. They make you appreciate the simple things in life.”

Nickajack Elementary’s dual language immersion program teaches students for half the school day in the target language of Spanish, then half the day in English. Diane Kordel handles the Spanish part of the day. She comments that, from the time the kindergarteners enter her classroom, many are missing home and need a hug for reassurance. “Try handling their crocodile tears in another language! It causes even more tears or laughter,”

In high school, Stephen Lawrence says he was a shy and reserved kid who never really knew what to say. “It took time to gain confidence,” he says. As a teacher now, he sees those same characteristics in some students and is concerned about their self-esteem and confidence. He’s found that performances help students grow in his music classes. “Our last spring concert featured seniors who chose the theme, music, costumes, lighting—you name

Continuing the Tradition of Excellence
2015 Smyrna Business Person of the Year Let our clients speak for us… “Gina has worked for us as both a buyer’s agent (once) and as a seller’s agent (twice) and we couldn’t have been happier - in fact, we’ve referred several friends and acquaintances to her and their experiences have been just as positive as ours have been! She knows the Smyrna housing market better than anyone and strives to meet her clients’ needs and wishes. She’s approachable, warm and friendly, but will be a bulldog (if needed!) on your behalf. She and her staff were always available to us whether we had a question, needed advice, or just wanted to see a house for a 3rd time! We think we’ve found our forever home, but if anything changes, we know who to call!!” — The Arnolds “Gina has been so helpful to us through the sale of our Smyrna home as well as in purchasing properties within Smyrna. She is wellinformed of our local market, guided us smoothly through the entire process, and was readily available to answer any questions in an extremely useful manner. Gina is knowledgeable, personable, resourceful and fair. We highly recommend using her services!” —Christi Bartolomucci
“Gina and her team guided us through the home buying process as true partners from day one. From helping us set and manage our expectations when shopping for our future home to negotiating an offer that we ultimately couldn’t pass up, she served as a trusted adviser throughout the process. To understand that Gina is not only an excellent real estate agent but also a dedicated community servant. Drive down Atlanta Road on a Saturday, you’ll see Gina and her husband Ken picking up trash on the area of the road they adopted through Keep Smyrna Beautiful. That’s exactly the type of leader we want to do business with.” —Daniel & Anna Groce
“When I met Gina, I treated her as though I was interviewing her for a job. In a sense, I was. I hired her on the spot... Gina was awesome and made the experience positive for everyone involved.” Demetria Davis, later referred sisters Alwanya, Sanquenette and Mom Alveria. We have worked with the whole family! “Gina worked diligently to help us find a house. She showed us every house that met our criteria in Smyrna. We saw many houses before we found our home and she was glad to show all of them. She had good advice when we asked for it and made the house buying process go smoothly. She followed up after we purchased the house to ensure we were happy with the transaction and had more good advice afterwards when we asked for her opinion. I would be happy to list my house with Gina or to buy my next house with her help. I have referred several people to her.”—Eva Tackett “We have engaged Gina and her team for 3 transactions so far, and we will be back again. We highly recommend her. Not only does she get the job done she does it with integrity. We trust her completely to give us sound advice” —Louis & Deb Deluca
“We have used Gina for 8 transactions over the past 25 years and continue to do so. What does that tell you?!” —Steve & Denice Josey
Gina Bridges understands how important community, family, and traditions are in our lives.
She also knows that most of these things began and are centered around our homes. It is exactly this understanding that has made Gina one of the area’s leading real estate professionals. Gina realizes that your home is one of your most important investments and buying or selling it can affect many traditions to come. That’s why she has built a Tradition of Excellence and this tradition will continue as her team grows into the next generation of outstanding Real Estate professionals.
