2 MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND PIEDMONT PARK
President Jimmy Carter passed away on Dec. 29, 2024, but his legacy lives on in Atlanta. There are countless memories of how President Carter shaped the world, the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia. Here are only a few ways and places that you can visit to honor his memory.
BY CAROL CARTER
The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum and The Carter Center are community, national and international gathering places. The library often hosts special exhibits and book signings and global conferences often occur at The Carter Center.
CARTER PRESIDENTIAL
Thanks to President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter’s decision to put the Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta, the city is one of only 14 others in the United States to have a presidential library. Visit and you can learn about the president’s term in the White House, view a replica of the Oval Office and learn about his and Rosalynn Carter’s worldwide achievements and the president’s early life.
The Carter Center, located next door to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, was founded in 1982 by President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter in partnership with Emory University to advance peace and health worldwide. The center has helped improve people’s lives in more than 80 countries by resolving conflicts, advancing democracy, human rights and economic
opportunity, preventing diseases, and improving mental health care.
The Carter Presidential Library’s grounds include formal gardens, sculptures and waterfalls tucked between two small lakes. You can stroll through the Rose Garden, home to 40 varieties — including the coral Rosalynn Carter rose — or view the serene Japanese garden, designed by master gardener Kinsaku Nakan.
In 2022, a dedication ceremony was held at the Carter Center for a new Japanese bell tower to house the Peace Bell, which was given to President Jimmy Carter in 1985 by the Japanese community to celebrate JapaneseAmerican friendship and President Carter’s efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries. The bell now serves as a symbol of peace at the Carter Center. The tower was constructed under the supervision of Japanese carpenters from the town of Konu.
Atlanta is home to two Nobel Peace Prizes. On Dec. 10, 2002, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Jimmy Carter the Nobel Peace Prize “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights and to promote economic and social development.” You can see President Carter’s Nobel Peace Prize at the Carter Presidential Library. The city’s other Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and is housed at The King Center.
From his time in the governor’s mansion, Jimmy Carter worked to diversify the political landscape. As governor of Georgia, he increased the number of African American state employees by 25% and appointed more people of color and women to state boards and agencies than any previous governor. He did the same as president.
In 1980, President Carter signed Public Law 96-428, establishing the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Site, which became the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park following the passage of a bill sponsored by Georgia Congressman John Lewis that redesignated the site as a park. It became the MLK, Jr. National Historical Park in 2018.

In 1973, Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter established the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Office. Today, the Georgia film industry is a $4 billion economic powerhouse, creating countless jobs across the state.
Jimmy Carter served as governor of Georgia from Jan. 12, 1971, until Jan. 14, 1975. Among the legislation that passed during his term was a bill to construct Building A of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority. Georgia World Congress Center was the largest convention center in the country when it opened in 1976, according to the Atlanta History Center, which further notes, “The state authority that planned this center still operates it today, along with Centennial Olympic Park and other surrounding convention and venue resources. Its construction enabled Atlanta to attract more prominent conferences, trade shows and entertainment acts. Within a few years, Atlanta’s convention industry ranked third largest in the U.S., behind New York City and Chicago.”
The Presidential Library and the Carter Center are located right on the Atlanta Beltline, where you can take a stroll before or after visiting.

Atlanta has many attractions that offer sensory-friendly tools and special programming. Most are certified sensory-inclusive by KultureCity in an effort to make our visitors’ experiences as inclusive as possible.
• Atlanta Braves: At each Braves home game, a family impacted by autism is invited to enjoy a complimentary, sensory-friendly game experience at Truist Park. These seats, called the “Matt Pack,” include a gift pack and proximity to a quiet space. The Braves Exceptional Fan program offers resources for families to ensure that attending games is comfortable and fun, with a Social Storybook illustrating what to expect and a sensory map. Accessible seating specialists are on staff.
• Center for Puppetry Arts: SensoryFriendly Sundays welcome guests with supportive staff and fidget toys, adjusted lighting, sound-reducing headphones and light-reducing sunglasses. Visitors can enjoy touch tables and guided storytelling and, during shows, sounds are low and consistent. A sensory-friendly Create-A-Puppet Workshop classroom features more table space to create. Guests can visit a quiet area with fidget toys, coloring books and puppets if they need to step away from the show, workshop or museum.
• Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame: Specially prepared kits for guests on the autism spectrum include verbal cue cards, noise-canceling headphones and fidget tools. Weighted lap pads and designated quiet zones add to the amenities, and trained staff are available.
• Children’s Museum of Atlanta: The museum opens early for families with children on the autism spectrum and those with sensory processing disorders. The museum offers a sensory-modified experience on select Sunday mornings, which includes a modified setting, limited admission and sound adjustments.
• Fernbank Museum of Natural History: Early museum access at 9 a.m. provides a quieter experience with indoor access to the exhibitions and outdoor nature experiences one hour before the normal opening. A sensoryfriendly film screening in the Giant Screen Theater is offered at 10:15 a.m. with modified lighting, lowered volume and no need for 3D glasses.
• Georgia Aquarium: Sensory rooms, special hours and sensory bags are offered to accommodate guests. Guests can visit each day until 10 a.m. for low-sensory hours with low lighting, no music and limited microphone usage. Team members get continuous training to offer resources and accommodations to guests.
• Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse: Guests can book a relaxed performance in a judgment-free zone designed especially for those on the autism spectrum or with other sensory-related concerns. Visitors can tour the theater beforehand to get an idea of what to expect, and there will be an artistic conversation with tactile exploration of costume pieces and props. Audience members are allowed to move about during the performance, and a limited number of tickets are sold, freeing more space to move around.
• Sloomoo Institute: A sensory-friendly hour offers limited guest entry and a quieter experience. Headsets are on hand and fun, swimmer-style nose plugs are available if scent is a trigger for guests. Sensory-friendly accommodations are available outside of the dedicated sensory-friendly hour upon request.
• State Farm Arena: Guest services representatives will help visitors with special needs to their seats and direct them to a special sensory room if needed. Sensory bags containing fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones and other resources are available for checkout. Accessible parking is available in all parking decks.
• Mercedes-Benz Stadium: A sensory room is offered in 15 minute increments and sensory kits can be borrowed while guests are at the stadium.
• Michael C. Carlos Museum: Staff are trained to recognize guests with sensory needs and to handle a sensory overload situation. Bags equipped with noisecanceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards and weighted lap pads are also available to guests.
• Zoo Atlanta: Sensory bags containing fidget tools, noise-canceling headphones and other resources, as well as weighted lap pads, are available to borrow. Quiet areas and headphone zones are located throughout the zoo.
These are only a few of the attractions around the city that offer special amenities. For more information and to plan your trip, please visit DiscoverAtlanta.com and check the websites of the individual attractions you want to visit.
Atlanta is for families — of whatever combination — grandparents, parents, teens, tweens, kids, cousins or aunts. If you want to do something with your favorite relative, here are a few ideas.

Master the Museums
Atlanta has a number of amazing museums and attractions that are perfect for all generations. Some favorites are the High Museum of Art, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Children’s Museum of Atlanta, World of Coca-Cola, Zoo Atlanta and National Center for Civil and Human Rights.
Joining these awesome attractions is Atlanta History Center’s Goizueta Children’s Experience. Don’t worry if you haven’t visited it — it just opened in 2025. Goizueta Children’s Experience is a 5,000-square-foot immersive and interactive bilingual exhibition where kids ages 0-8 can explore the theme “Our Great Big City.” It inspires young
minds to learn about Atlanta’s vibrant history, people, arts and culture.
Try a Performance Alliance Theatre in Midtown hosts Theatre for the Very Young for the tiniest visitors, ages 0-5. Check out “Dinosaur” in the Selig Family Black Box Theatre, March 19–May 4, and help foster a love of live theater with this epic adventure.
While the younger kids will delight in the hands-on play with artisanal slime at Sloomoo Institute Atlanta in Buckhead, the whole family can put on rain gear and get slimed. It’s not celebrities getting slimed on the “Kids Choice Awards,” but it’s close.
When a city hosts as many conventions as Atlanta does, it turns out that many are open to the public. The Atlanta International Auto Show is coming to the Georgia World Congress Center from March 20-23. Car lovers of all ages will be excited to see the latest models and take part in the interactive exhibits. MomoCon, May 22-25, brings together fans of Japanese anime, comics, video games and other fan favorites.
Atlanta has amazing parks, so get a ball, pack a picnic and make it a family outing with a little friendly competition on the side. There is plenty of room for a makeshift soccer, softball or kickball game at Piedmont Park. Nearby is John Howell Park in Virginia Highland, where a permanent volleyball net will certainly spur everyone’s competitive spirit. It’s
never too early to teach youngsters about tennis, and the city has 108 public courts spread across 45 parks.
Who doesn’t love a tea party? Try The Dirty Tea in Virginia Highland, Dr. Bombay’s Underwater Tea Party in Candler Park and The Queen’s Tea Party on Malone Drive. Of course, moms and grandmas are welcome.
Spend the afternoon visiting thrift shops or vintage stores looking for stylish gems. The benefit of going to places like Junkman’s Daughter in Little Five Points is that when a teen pulls out a geometric block mini-dress, her grandmother can actually tell her about how she accessorized it when she wore it back in the ’60s. Other great places are Lost ’N Found, the Cathedral Thrift House, Clothing Warehouse, Lucky Exchange and Second Street Ponce.
How about going to one of the city’s great restaurants where you cook your own food? Before you go to a show at the Fox Theatre, head to the Melting Pot and put your fork into the communal fondue pot. There are several Asian barbecue places where families cook their dinner over a flaming
smokeless grill. Check out Gyu-Kaku in Atlantic Station, KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot on Howell Mill Road and Char Korean Bar & Grill on North Highland Avenue.
It’s never too early to learn about — or remember — the civil rights struggle and Atlanta’s important role in it. Visit The King Center, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (closed for construction until August 2025) and the Madam CJ Walker Museum. For a fun and informative afternoon, take the Civil Rights Tour as Tom Houck, former chauffeur to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., leads a bus tour that takes you to important and sometimes lesser-known sites while he regales you with inside stories about the events and people behind the Civil Rights Movement.
Ponce City Market is a great place for shopping, and the food court is one of the best in the country, but for real fun, go up on the roof where kids can challenge the older generations in games, mini-golf and vintage amusements at Skyline Park and then get a bite to eat and a beverage at Nine Mile Station or 12 Cocktail Bar.

Catch a game or two while you’re in town and get a feel for how we do sports in the ATL. From baseball to soccer, basketball, volleyball and much more, it’s easy for you to get in on the action.
BY DEMETRIUS BELL
It’s spring, which means that it’s time for Ronald Acuña Jr., Spencer Strider, Austin Riley and the rest of the Atlanta Braves to return to the baseball diamond for another fun season at Truist Park. When it comes to baseball, there are plenty of promotions to get you into the stadium to cheer on the team. There’s plenty of pomp and circumstance surrounding Atlanta’s home Opening Day on April 4 against the Marlins. Additionally, there will be a Chipper Jones 2000 All-Star Game bobblehead giveaway on April 22, a Braves model race car giveaway on May 6, a Raisel Iglesias bobblehead giveaway two days later and the Braves Country 5K on May 31 before they take on the Red Sox. The Braves are routinely
a hot ticket in Atlanta and with the AllStar Game coming here in July, now’s your chance to enjoy some baseball action ahead of the summertime festivities.
The excitement surrounding Atlanta United FC is always palpable in any given season and there’s only more reason to be excited now that 2018 MLS Cup hero Miguel Almiron has returned to Atlanta United FC. The incredible MercedesBenz Stadium in downtown Atlanta will play host to nine home games for Atlanta United FC from March through May, with none bigger than the game on March 16. That is when global superstar Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF will come to town to do battle between the lines. With an incredible atmosphere, affordable prices for both tickets and concessions and the action on display, you can never go wrong with watching Atlanta United FC play.
With the season winding down, Trae Young, Zaccharie Risacher and the rest of the Hawks are looking to make a serious push for the playoffs. The Hawks
will have 12 more regular season home games left before the playoffs and they’ll be counting on the support of basketball fans across Atlanta for each of those games. With promotions including a Killer Mike bobblehead giveaway on March 4 against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks, Women’s Empowerment Night on March 8 against the Pacers, an I AM ATL hat giveaway on March 22 against the Warriors and on March 23 against the 76ers, Culture Fest on April 6 against the Jazz and Fan Appreciation
Night on April 13 against the Magic, there’s plenty of reason to go to State Farm Arena in downtown Atlanta to get in on the intense NBA action.
Brittany Griner, Rhyne Howard and the rest of the Atlanta Dream are set for another exciting season of basketball at the raucous Gateway Center Arena at College Park. The home opener for the Dream will tip off May 22, and it figures to be a can’t-miss event as Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will come to town on that night. Two days later, the Dallas Wings will face off against the Dream, and then 24 hours later, the Connecticut Sun will take on the Dream. Season tickets are already sold out, and singlegame tickets are at a premium, which is a sign that there’s plenty of excitement and anticipation as fans are running with the Dream here in 2025.
College football’s National Championship was decided here in Atlanta back in January. While Atlanta won’t be hosting the Final Four this year (you’ll have to wait until 2031 for that), the road to the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship will roll through State Farm Arena as the South Regional Final will take place here. Four teams will visit Atlanta with hopes of winning their Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight matchups so that they can go to the Final Four in San Antonio. If you want to see some of the best action that March Madness has to offer, then this is the event for you. Make sure you’re there on March 28 and 30 for all three games.
Last year, Leah Edmond and the Atlanta Vibe of the Pro Volleyball Federation took the Atlanta sports scene by storm in the Vibe’s debut season while playing at Gas South Arena in Duluth. The Vibe is back in action for another fast-paced season, and it isn’t the only volleyball team in town. League One Volleyball is in the midst of its debut season at Gateway Center Arena. With founding athlete Kelsey Cook leading the way for LOVB Atlanta, there’s plenty to be excited about from March through May when it comes to volleyball in Atlanta – whether it’s with the Vibe or LOVB.
The action at the Overtime Elite (OTE) Arena in Atlantic Station is heating up, as the OTE Playoffs will reach their conclusion in early March. Both Game 3s of the OTE Semi-Finals will take place over the course of March 1 and 2, with Games 4 and 5 both taking place March 3, 4 and 5. The OTE Finals are set to
kick off on March 7, with the best-of-five series set to take place from March 7 through March 16 (if the series goes all five games). With tickets just $35 for all events, this is a prime opportunity for hoop fans in Atlanta to come out and see some of the brightest young talent in the basketball world before they move up to bigger and better heights.
While the Masters may famously be “A Tradition Unlike Any Other” that even more famously takes place a few hours away at the resplendent Augusta National Golf Club, this major golf event still has a major impact on Atlanta’s sports calendar. For starters, Augusta National isn’t that far away, so some golf fans may start their week-long journey to the Masters in Atlanta before finishing the trip in Augusta. It’s also a bit of a bookend moment. While The Masters may be the first major event on golf’s calendar, the season ends with The TOUR Championship’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, which occur in Atlanta. So even though the road to golf glory starts in Augusta, it finishes here in Atlanta.
