If you are in dental school, there are a lot of unknowns. Having graduated in May of 2017, many of them are still fresh in my memory. What will I make on that practical? How did I do on that test? Will my patient show up tomorrow? Should I get involved with ASDA

or another student group? When will I get to sleep again? But many times, one of the biggest unknowns is, “Where am I going to work when I graduate?”
This question probably entered your mind soon after the adrenaline rush of your acceptance notification wore off. Unless you are fortunate to have family, friends, or prior work experience in the office where you will return to practice, the cloud of uncertainly begins to form and darkens with each passing day. Because dental school is year-round, you don’t have any meaningful opportunity to network in the area(s) you’d like to work, so by default, your knowledge of the outside world is dependent on the information you receive at your dental school. This creates a natural void between you the students and the private practice world as it is not practical for a private practitioner to close down his or her office to journey to the school in hopes of finding an associate in between classes. It also creates a natural pipeline to the corporate world because they have the resources and staffing opportunities to engage entire classes directly.

These slow days have given me the time to watch my bosses, learn from them, and start developing my methodologies for how I will do things when all of the responsibility falls on me.

Whether you purchase the practice from your boss or branch out to start your own, eventually you will be in a position where you will be the owner of your practice. Without doing anything different yourself, you will see more money coming your way because of your hygienist(s). As the owner, you will now receive a portion of the hygiene production that you didn’t when you were an associate. Furthermore, should you go on to owning the building, you will not be paying rent, so that money stays in your pocket as well. Moving past the financials, the “headaches” of private practice really don’t apply to you as an associate. They do if you jump straight into purchasing a practice or building one from scratch, but you wouldn’t do that if you didn’t already have a good team around you and have the aptitude and interest for hitting the ground running. For the majority of us associates, our first couple of years in private practice will serve as the training ground for all the things we didn’t learn in school. Many of these things are spun in a negative light by the corporate offices in hopes of enticing you to just let them do it for you, but remember that you would be an associate in your private practice, not the boss. Your boss will continue doing all those things whether you are working there or not. Payroll and bills will be paid. Staff will be managed. Insurance will be filed. Supplies will be ordered. However, by being a part of the office, you will be able to see how these things are done and learn to do them yourself. I haven’t had formal “instruction” on any of
Speaking of time, one of the things I value the most about private practice is developing relationships with my patients. I enjoy spending time getting to know new patients for the first time and catching up with those I’ve seen before. I made the decision in dental school that I didn’t want to practice at the break-neck speed that is commonplace in corporate dentistry and in the medical world where the doctor is in and out in a flash. I enjoy the relational opportunities dentistry provides, which really allow me to get to the root of my patients’ problems to prevent future issues, not just kick the can down the road and fix problems as they continue to pop up. All too often new patients will say, “No one ever showed me how to brush or floss before,” or, “No one took the time to figure out why I had cavities; they just said I had some and that they needed to be filled. I just assumed I wasn’t brushing good enough.” In the fast-paced world of corporate dentistry, and many private practices as well, clear and thorough communication with the patient can be overlooked. You will have the most training and the most knowledge of anyone at your office, which gives you the greatest responsibility in taking the time to education your patients.

Featured Article In the first part of this series, I discussed the importance of becoming the CEO of your practice. This is the First Pillar of what I call the “Five Pillars of Dental Leadership.” In that article, I presented the importance of moving from just being the practice owner, to gaining skills and implementing systems that will allow you to move into the Chief Executive position. Once you do this, your practice will meet its goals and positively impact your finances, your team, and the community. In many ways equally important is the Second Pillar, “Building a World Class Team.” One of the main reasons that dentists are selling their practices is that they are tired of dealing with the stress and hassle of running the team. If you concentrate on the Second Pillar, you can develop a practice that runs without you even having to be there. Everyone will be aligned and excited around a vision and common goals.

Pillar Two: Build A World Class Team The concept of building a world class team might sound daunting. Of ten, trying to find the right team members is an ongoing process with constant challenges. You might even ask, How do you define a world class team? My answer would be, a world class team is a group of high-performing members who are so commit ted to the mission that each inspires the nex t to raise his or her performance to a new level. I believe at Tower Leadership we have just that. I was recently in a meeting, and each person in the room was discussing Second Quarter 2018

Featured Article personal successes. The performance level was so high that even I asked myself, as the CEO, if I could be doing more. When will you know when you have reached this level? The day you walk into your practice and the team is so commit ted to impact and grow th that they handle almost every problem, project, and initiative before it even comes to you.
Build a world class team, and your day-to-day practice life will change dramatically.
Where to Begin
You might think the first place to start is the hiring process. The first place to start, if you want to build a world class team, is actually with your VISION.
I discussed this in an earlier article, and it is such an important leadership concept. Does your team know why they come to work every day? Is it simply for a paycheck? The problem with this is that someone can always pay them more. Also, if you start asking them to do more for the same pay, they will become discouraged, and quite honestly if monetary compensation were your only motivation, so would you.
I encourage you to sit down and come up with a clear and defined vision. Where will you

be in the nex t 5 years, 3 years, and even the nex t year? You can’t establish strong goals until you know where you are going. Once you know this, share it with your team, then ask for their input. When was the last time you asked your team to give input on the direction of the practice? When you ask them, you might be surprised at the response.
I was recently taking a practice through this exercise, and the lead hygienist asked: if she helped the doctor reach their vision, could the practice sponsor an orphanage in Haiti? That is what motivated her. When you share your common vision, and everyone is aligned, your team will show up for work understanding their “WHY.”
Ask Your Team Members What They Want
This might seem like an intimidating exercise, and I know you might be scared of what comes back when you ask people what they want. However, this is such a key component to building a world class team. I recently had a doctor walk his team through this process, and when he asked his associate what he wanted, the associate responded that he
