SUMMER READING For Middle School “A book is like a garden carried in the pocket.” ~ Chinese proverb ~ The Atlanta Girls’ School English department aims to inspire students to become lifetime readers, so we are careful to choose books both for their literary merit as well as for their appealing themes and interesting characters. It is our hope that the books below, while required, will be part of a summer of fun reading.
English 6 Required Reading The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi Carefu!y read and enjoy the novel. As you read, mark passages that especia!y interest you or that you do not understand. When you finish each chapter, write a one-two sentence summary of the chapter. When you have finished reading, write two diary entries &om the point of view of Charlotte that extend the ending of the novel. You should make an effort to maintain the author’s writing style and personality. These entries should be about one page each. Plan to turn in and share your entries with the class.
English 7 Required Reading Rising 7th graders are required to read two summer reading books. One is the student’s choice of any book she has not previously read &om the list of Independent Reading Su(estions on the reverse side of this page. The other is Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry. You are required to take one written page of notes for each of the two books read. Notes are ideas, phrases, bu!ets, or thoughts to remind you of the plot (the story), the setting, and the names and basic personality of each main character. Do not take more than one page of notes, and bring your notes on both novels the first day of class.
English 8 Required Reading Romiette and Julio by Sharon Draper The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton Read actively and mark your book with thoughtful annotations. Annotations can include, but are not limited to, definitions of unknown words, interpretations of symbols, and questions about confusing passages. Select one quote &om each chapter (include page number where the quote is found), and write the quote on the first page of the chapter. Upon returning to school, you wi! be expected to be conversant with the text and should refer to the significant quotes you selected. You should also expect to participate in activities, write creatively or analytica!y, and even take a test.
MAY, 2010 Summertime is a great time to relax and enjoy reading – and creative writing! Research shows that reading improves with practice, so choose as many of these books as you can find time for. Before selecting a book, talk to a librarian or friend for a suggestion, or check the summaries and reviews of these books online at Amazon.com or many other sites. In many cases, these books are part of a series; feel free to choose any title in the series. The most important thing is to choose a book that looks interesting and keep it near you to read when an opportunity arises! Have fun.

Uniform & Dress Code (Last Updated 2010-2011)
Atlanta Girls’ School expects everyone - students, teachers, and administrators – to maintain standards of dress that are in keeping with the expectations of the school community. The Uniform Dress Code fosters an atmosphere of seriousness and purpose, which promotes professionalism among students, faculty, and staff. More importantly, AGS encourages every student to showcase her individuality through academics, athletics, and individual passions rather than through her clothing. The uniform is a symbol of community; worn well, it also becomes a symbol of personal pride for students. It is the responsibility of every student and her parents to be sure that the student is “in uniform” for the school day. The prescribed uniform is purchased through Parker Uniforms, LP at www.parkersu.com. Students will not be permitted into class if not in uniform. General Uniform and Appearance Guidelines • • • • • •
•
All uniform pieces should be labeled with the student’s name. All uniform pieces should be free of paint, stains, tears, etc. Appropriate undergarments should be worn at all times and should not be exposed or visible through clothing. This includes t-shirts and tanks under blouses as well as shorts under skirts. No pajama pants are allowed anywhere on campus, not even to travel from the car into the building. We have plenty of warm uniform pieces. Students should be sure to have a uniform blazer, sweater, jacket or fleece with them on cold days. Winter coats and raincoats cannot be worn past the lobby of the building. If a student is wearing her uniform inappropriately (e.g., oxford shirt not tucked in, rolled skirt, inappropriate shoes), the student will be asked to fix the situation. If a teacher needs to ask a student to fix her uniform on a regular basis, it will be considered a sign of disrespect, and the student will be required to meet with her Dean. Consequences may include removal from class or from school for the remainder of the day. Hair should be kept clean and out of the face. Extreme or unnatural hair color is not permissible. Hair, make-up, jewelry, and nail polish should not create a significant distraction or disruption in the classroom. No visible graffiti, writing on body parts, or tattoos are allowed. Piercings are limited to the earlobe only. All other piercings must be taken out. For a definition of acceptable modifications of a student’s appearance, please see the Associate Head of School.
Formal Uniform AGS will have a formal uniform day once a week. The formal uniform is as follows: •
Upper School o Upper school plaid skirt o White button down blouse (oxford or overblouse) o Optional navy sweater (v-neck or button down) o Socks (white or navy) or tights (white or navy) o School approved shoes (sneakers not permitted) o Optional navy blazer
•
Middle School o Middle school khaki skirt or skort o White button down blouse (oxford or overblouse) o Optional navy sweater (v-neck or button down) o Socks (white or navy) or tights (white or navy) o School approved shoes (sneakers not permitted)
Casual Uniform Students are encouraged to look their best on a daily basis, but they may choose to wear more casual uniform pieces every day except formal uniform days. Even when students are wearing the casual uniform they must remember that: • • • •
Oxford button downs must be tucked in at all times. Skirts, shorts, and skorts must be no shorter than 3” above the top of the knee. Socks must cover the anklebone but should not cover the knee. Sneakers must be all-white and clean.
Free Dress Day Free dress day is announced in advance, usually the last Friday of most months. Students pay one dollar to participate in this free dress day. These funds support Circle of Sisters’ projects. Students are not permitted to wear any of the following items: shorts or skirts that are shorter than 3” above the top of the knee, sofees, spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops, bare midriff shirts, exposed bra straps, high heels, flip-flops, or jeans that are torn. Physical Education Uniform • •
The PE uniform can be purchased at Parker Uniforms. It consists of a grey PE shirt and blue PE shorts or sweatpants. All students are required to wear the regulation PE uniform during PE class. All PE shirts must have the student’s last name written across the back and above the logo on the front, left breast. This can be done with a thick fabric pen or with iron-on letters. PE shorts must be labeled on the white section below the logo.
Note for Returning Students We understand that returning students still own some uniform pieces that do not fall under the category of “acceptable uniform pieces” but are still in good shape and complement the current uniform pieces. These uniform items will be “grandfathered” in. Items that are not “grandfathered” in are backless shoes and sneakers that are not white.
All students are expected to adhere to the school dress code. A student will not be permitted to enter a classroom unless in appropriate dress, and if the student is incapable of making this happen, she will sit out of all classes until a parent or guardian can be reached to bring her the appropriate dress. She will be marked absent from the classes that she misses as a result of being out of uniform. If a student repeatedly violates the dress code, she will be referred to the Grade Level Dean, and appropriate consequences will ensue.

Atlanta Girls' School Laptop Lease Program What is it? Atlanta Girls' School, in conjunction with Apple Inc. initiated a Laptop Lease Program beginning in the fall of 2009. The Laptop Lease Program is designed to assist AGS students in obtaining the latest in laptop technology and software at a reduced initial cost. Our technology program is currently offering the 13” aluminum Macbook Pro to students. The laptop will have the most current releases of school approved productivity and content creation software. Additionally, the program includes Apple Care Protection Plan, full-coverage accidental damage insurance as well as a laptop case and external hard drive for personal document, video, music and photo backups.
Laptop Lease Program At-A-Glance Year 1: Tech Fee $725.00 Year 2: Estimated Tech Fee $625.00 Year 3: Estimated Tech Fee $625.00 Year 4: Lease starts over Deposit by: July 1, 2010 Remaining balance: August 15, 2010 Technology Fee includes: Laptop, Accidental Insurance, Apple Care Protection Plan, Bag, Storage Device, and Software
What are the advantages? Our Laptop Lease Program (“LLP”) offers an alternative to students who need a new computer, want to upgrade their current computer, or do not have the financial resources to purchase a new computer. Since AGS has teamed with Apple Inc., we are able to lease to students state-of-the-art laptops including software, insurance and technical support for approximately $700 a year in the form of a Technology Fee. The laptops are designed to specifications proposed by the AGS Technology Staff in an effort to provide students with tools that will help them succeed. We offer on-campus tech support and, if we cannot repair the laptop, your daughter will receive, subject to availability, a loaner laptop to use until hers is in working order. FAQ’s 1. Why lease and not buy the laptop? Current technology enhances student learning. Because technology changes so rapidly, after 3 years the performance of the notebook will begin to affect your daughterʼs learning. With the special prices negotiated for AGS, we can ensure that your daughter always has access to the latest software and systems to maximize her learning experience.
2. Is there any other benefit to leasing? Yes, there are additional benefits such as: • The inclusion of accidental damage protection. This type of coverage can be quite expensive. • The ability at the end of the lease period to receive new equipment through the annual payment of the technology fee. • Always having the latest and greatest model laptop. As previously stated, technology changes quite rapidly, and AGS is committed to staying on the forefront of technology advancement. Leasing a laptop from AGS means never having to worry about older computers breaking down. 3. What software do we get access to while at AGS? Software provided through the technology program is comprehensive and has been selected specifically to enhance the learning experience at AGS. Productivity software includes Microsoft Office 2008, Apple’s iWork ’09, Type to Learn, Math Type, Inspiration, and ActiveStudio. Content creation and creative software includes Apple’s iLife ’09, Adobe’s Creative Suite 3, Aperture, iTunes and more. 4. What else comes with the deal? The Apple MacBook also comes with an extended warranty plus battery coverage. Your daughter will also receive a slim-line bag, which can be easily inserted in the normal school bag to help protect the laptop while being used at AGS. Additionally, she will receive an external hard drive for backing up her personal documents. AGS will backup files associated with schoolwork. 5. What about servicing of the notebook should something go wrong? AGS will provide on-site service to laptops. Physically damaged laptops must be repaired off-site. AGS maintains a loaner pool of MacBooks for use when a student’s laptop will be out-of-service for 48 hours or longer. Loaners are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. In the event that a loaner is unavailable at the time of need, every effort will be made to provide your daughter with access to iMacs, which are available for use around the campus, until such time as a loaner is available. In all cases of damage or repair, the AGS Technology department MUST be notified via the school’s Trouble Ticketing System as soon as an incident occurs. Note: Lost or stolen laptop replacement is the responsibility of the student or parent.

6. How long will it take to get our laptop? This depends upon the timely return of the student Laptop Lease Program Form provided to the student at training, completion of financial arrangements and insurance coverage, and preparation and imaging of your daughter’s laptop by the AGS Technology Department. 7. What happens at the end of the 3-year lease? You will be issued a new laptop and auxiliary equipment. 8. What if I want to buy my daughter a laptop instead of leasing one? Atlanta Girls’ School has moved to a lease program for all students. This will insure that your daughter’s laptop is utilizing current technology. In order to ensure compatibility with AGS’s servers and infrastructure, computers will need to be updated on a predetermined schedule as determined by the technology department. Purchasing equipment is not an option. 9. Will my daughter be trained on how to use the Macbook? Yes, all Atlanta Girls' School students are trained on how to use the Macbook as well as in other areas such as internet safety, hardware use, multimedia/presentation skills and much more. 10. When is the Technology Fee due? A fifty percent deposit must be paid by July 1, 2010. The remaining balance must be paid by August 15, 2010.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS ‐ 2010/2011 General These terms and conditions govern the provision of services by IC‐International Concepts Corp. (ICC) to its Customers (Customer). This Registration is an agreement for the provision of student transportation by ICC to Customer for the full academic school year, at the stated fees. Fuel Surcharge Fuel surcharge may apply to customers not using single payment plan. Surcharge shall not exceed $150.00 per student. Surcharge will apply if retail fuel cost increases, at any time during the year, by more than 30% from January 2010 average fuel prices as determined by the US Department of Labor Bureau of Statistics (http://www.bls.gov/cpi/). Service Period and Dismissal Times ICC provides transportation service from the first to the last day of classes. ICC offers earlier departures from school on dates in which the dismissal time for the entire school is earlier on routes not shared with other schools. On days in which selected grades have a different dismissal time, ICC’s departure schedule will remain unchanged to accommodate all student riders. Registration Processing ICC prioritizes registrations by date of receipt. ICC accepts fax registrations if payment arrives within ten (10) business days from fax date. If a route is unavailable when ICC receives registration, ICC will notify Customer immediately. Customer may opt to have registration placed on a waiting list, choose an alternate route, or receive full refund of fees paid. Conditional Registrations and Refunds Registration fees are 100% refundable if Customer notifies ICC, in advance, that registration is subject to student’s acceptance by the school. In case of non‐acceptance by the school, customer must notify ICC before June 1 in order to receive full refund of fees paid. Cancellation by Customer before the first day of classes, for reasons other than student’s non‐acceptance by the school, is subject to $100.00 processing fee per student. The annual agreement is in force after the start of classes and fees are not refundable. ICC may cancel published routes before the start of classes if registrations do not meet minimum capacity requirements. If route cancellation by ICC occurs before the start of classes, Customer will receive full refund of fees paid. Route Schedules and Route Modifications ICC makes best efforts to operate routes as per published schedules. Delays may occur because of conditions beyond ICC’s control such as traffic, weather, mechanical reasons, or late release of students by the school. ICC will attempt to notify customers if a route is operating more than ten (10) minutes behind schedule. ICC may modify schedules and itineraries periodically to accommodate new traffic conditions, route enhancements, or school schedule changes. If a change permanently affects location or time of pick up for a student, ICC will review change with Customer before implementation. If time change exceeds ten (10) minutes, Customer may request a different route, or discontinue service and receive prorated refund of fees paid. Weather Conditions ICC may delay and/or cancel routes because of hazardous weather conditions. Even if the school is open for students with safe access to the school, ICC bases its decision to operate routes on whether it is safe to operate school buses and vans. Customers should call 678‐947‐4969 to check on status of routes. Seating Capacity and Seat Assignments School buses have capacity for seventy‐two students, three students per seat. In consideration of student’s comfort, ICC assigns two students per seat for fourth grade and above. Thus, the “comfortable” capacity is approximately sixty seats per bus. ICC assigns seats by grade level at the beginning of the school year. Students may exchange seats by mutual agreement if they notify driver. Customer may use registration form to request seating arrangements, (seat next to friend, sibling, etc.). Registrations received after August 1 may have a seat assignment that does not follow these guidelines. Discipline ICC may suspend or discontinue service to students for a serious violation of School Bus Rules or Student Code of Behavior. Customer will receive School Bus Rules before the beginning of school year. The Student Code of Behavior is in the school handbook. In order to restore riding privileges of a suspended student, parents must acknowledge suspension by returning endorsed suspension notice to ICC. ICC will inform the school of disciplinary actions. Destruction of Property and Delinquent Payments Customer is responsible for damages to vehicles caused by student’s erratic behavior. ICC reserves the right to suspend service to students with delinquent payment. Lost Items Students recover most items left behind in ICC buses. Although ICC makes best efforts to locate lost items, the company is not responsible for items left behind by students. Guest Riders Students may not bring unregistered guests on buses or vans. Customers must contact ICC for procedures on guest student riders.

Dear AGS Families, Just as AGS academics prepare our students to believe in their intellectual competence, AGS athletics prepare our athletes to believe in their physical competence. The winning edge comes from both the trained mind and the trained body. Belief in one’s competence is an essential ingredient for personal empowerment. Numerous studies indicate that girls who spend time participating in sports tend to have higher grades, are absent less, and are more self-assured. Our student athlete exercises a great deal of discipline in her management of time for studies, practices, and games. She soon learns her achievements are the direct result of her efforts and the resilience with which she recovers from adversity. The confidence the student athlete gains in our programs allows her to be better prepared for both mental and physical competition. The AGS Athletic program operates on the precept that an athlete exists in each girl! We adhere to a no-cut policy for all sub-varsity teams, and we provide teams for both the skilled player and the novice. Knowledgeable, dedicated, and student-centered coaches are either acquired from the Atlanta Girls’ School faculty and staff or from the community at large. Our expectations include the athlete making every effort to attend all practices and competitions. Attendance is paramount. It must be a priority for all team members and their families. Middle School competes in the Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference (MAAC). Upper School competes in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) athletic league. In GISA, students in grades 8 –12 may compete at the Varsity level. Based on student interest, the following teams will be offered at AGS during the 2010 –2011 school year: MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS Fall Sports (Aug.– Oct.) Cross Country Volleyball Softball
VARSITY SPORTS Fall Sports (Aug. - Oct.) Cross Country Volleyball
Winter Sports (Nov. – Jan.) Basketball Swimming Dance
Spring Sports (Feb. – Apr.) Soccer Track & Field Tennis Golf
Winter Sports (Oct. - Feb.) Basketball Swimming Dance Archery
Spring Sports (Feb. – Apr.) Soccer Track & Field Tennis Golf
Note: Eighth graders are eligible to play on middle school and varsity teams. The number of participants in any one sport may change the team offerings. Student interest drives the athletic program. The practice and game schedule for Middle School teams is a either Monday – Thursday commitment or four days a week commitment. Practices usually run from 3:30 PM and end at 5:00 PM or before. Varsity teams usually practice five days a week for at least ninety minutes. The timing for varsity practices varies depending on the practice location and the sport. If the varsity practice does not start immediately after school, the athletes are assigned a study hall in which they are
required to do school work. Practices and games for sub-varsity teams will not be held during school holidays. Varsity competitors may on occasion be asked to practice or play in a tournament during a vacation. All athletes are encouraged to practice on their own during school breaks. Before you commit to a team, please read the two forms: Expectations for Athletes and Parent/Guardian Expectations. A signed form must be returned to the Athletic Director before any athlete is permitted to join a team. Playing on a sports team is a great way to get to know yourself and other AGS students. No student will be allowed to participate unless her physical exam form (located in this binder) is on file in the main office. Summer is the time to experience a new sport or refine skills for your favorite sport. We are fortunate to have many sports camps available nearby. Colleges, universities, and many private schools offer sport specific camps. Sport specific information will be mailed in late July to all students. By that time fall sport schedules will be included on the AGS web site. Upper School athletes will start practicing in early August before school starts. Most Middle School sports will begin the first full week of school. Finally, I am delighted that you have chosen to attend Atlanta Girls’ School. It’s HURRICANE season all year long for the AGS student athlete; we hope to see you participate in the sports program fall, winter, and spring! Go Hurricanes!!
Deb Keegan Athletic Director
ATLANTA GIRLS’ SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR ATHLETES
1.
The AGS athlete shall abide by the AGS Student Handbook.
2. The AGS athlete shall demonstrate a positive attitude. 3. The AGS athlete shall adhere to the following team rules: a. b. c. d. e. f.
No use of tobacco products, alcohol, or illegal drugs. Maintain healthy sleep and social hours. Represent your team in a positive manner at all times. Practice good sportsmanship at all times. Eat a balanced diet, with special consideration given to practice and game times. During practice and games, stay with your team at all times and do not have conversations with friends and/or parents.
4. The AGS athlete will arrange for transportation after practices and games. 5. The AGS athlete will be in good academic standing. The student must be passing five courses. 6. The AGS athlete shall meet the daily participation rule that requires class attendance to be eligible to participate in practice or a game. Students must be present for the equivalent of four classes. 7. The AGS athlete shall attend every practice and game possible. School sports programs should take priority over outside club/sports activities. 8. The AGS athlete shall be responsible for communicating to the coach that she will miss a practice or game as soon as the athlete recognizes this will occur. 9. The AGS athlete shall adhere to specific team rules as communicated in each sport. 10. The AGS athlete shall support her team members and their play.
AGS ATHLETICS: PARENT/GUARDIAN EXPECTATIONS
Attend the coaches’/parents’ meeting at the start of the season. Assure that the athlete will attend all scheduled practices and games. Take a look at the schedule. Please have your daughter notify the coach as early as possible of any conflicts with the proposed practice and/or game schedule. Acknowledge the ultimate authority of the coach in determining strategy and player selection. Our coaches have a genuine interest in the positive development of your daughter and have strategies to accomplish this important goal. If you have questions or concerns about a coach’s decisions, please do not approach her/him on the day of the contest. Instead, make an appointment for a telephone conversation or meeting to discuss your concerns. Demonstrate and promote mature and positive behavior during athletic contests. This is modeling good sportsmanship for our girls. Allow your daughter to focus on the task at hand by refraining from contact with her from the time the team assembles to warm-up until the coach dismisses the players. If your daughter sustains an injury that requires your attention, you will be summoned. Encourage your daughter to speak to her coach if she becomes dissatisfied with any aspect of the sport experience. If she needs help having this conversation, inform her advisor, who can assist and support this communication. Attend all of your daughter’s athletic contests as much as personal and business commitments permit. Please invite relatives and friends to support your daughter and the team! Promote your daughter’s pursuit of a sport by limiting distractions from this goal. Allowing her to miss practice or games for non-emergency situations sends a mixed message (e.g., taking her out of practice/game because she must help with a sibling’s birthday party; missing practice/game to spend time visiting relatives; insisting she miss a practice/game to complete a project that she has known about for weeks). Helping your daughter manage her time in order to honor her academic and athletic commitments may be the most beneficial lessons she learns through her participation in sports. Make arrangements for your daughter’s transportation home after practices/games. Please remember that our coaches have already put in a full day of teaching/coaching, and they have other obligations. Timeliness matters.
Before you commit to a team, please read the two forms: Expectations for Athletes and Parent/Guardian Expectations. This signed form must be returned to the Athletic Director before any athlete is permitted to join a team. Playing on a sports team is a great way to get to know yourself and other AGS students. No student will be allowed to participate unless her physical exam form (located in this binder) is on file in the main office.
We have read and understand the commitment necessary to be a member of an AGS athletic team as well as the importance of the parents’/guardians’ role and participation in our daughter’s athletic endeavors. We will do our best to support the stated expectations.

Upper School students who leave school grounds at the end of the day may not return to campus other than as part of a supervised activity. Middle School After School Program Atlanta Girls’ School provides supervised care for middle school students who need to remain on campus after the end of the school day. There will be a $15 per day charge to parents for each student’s participation in this official after school program. Students in this program must stay in designated areas and must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with school policies and as required by the after school director. The after school program runs from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. every school day. It will begin on the first day of school, August 18th. Please note that all middle school students who are staying on campus after 4:00 p.m. and are not directly involved in a teacher-supervised activity will be expected to be a part of the after school program. Please keep this in mind as you make plans for your daughter’s transportation home. At 4:00 p.m., all middle school students who are still on campus are expected to be in an area with adult supervision. This means that every middle school student on campus must be: in the after school program, working with a teacher in the teacher’s classroom or office, or with her sports coach. All parents are expected to come into the building to sign the student out of the after school program. On the days that a student has sports practice or a fine arts rehearsal, the student must be picked up within 15 minutes of the end of this activity. Otherwise, the student will be escorted to the after school program until she is picked up. Parents will be charged the $15 daily fee for the after school program in this case.
Late Pickup Fee for Middle School and Upper School Students All students are to be picked up from school by 6:00 PM (or within 15 minutes after the end of sports practice, whichever is later). If a student is not picked up by that time, a $1 per minute fee will be assessed for each minute after 6:00 PM that she is on campus.
