PORTRAIT PORTRA IT BY ERICA GEORGE DINES

IT’S BEEN A WHIRLWIND COUPLE OF MONTHS for the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles team, and I personally wish that I could sneak in a good old-fashioned soak—and perhaps a quick snooze—in one of the award-winning tubs from our 2016 Bath of the Year contest (see the glamorous results on page 13). What are we seeking respite from? Well, quite a bit. In March, we partnered with some of the industry’s brightest talents to build a buzzworthy, hands-on kitchen and bath showcase at Phipps Plaza, where we welcomed the lively Mary McDonald, a keynote speaker for the Design Bloggers Conference (don’t miss the highlights on page 32). In April, we implemented and debuted a successful 22,000-squarefoot Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, pausing between weekends to toast to our intrepid designers at High Point Market. While it’s true that there’s no rest for the weary, we’re quick to be inspired by Atlanta’s other unstoppable talents—specifically Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison, who invited us to their Cartersville property, Summerland, to share an intimate dining experience in their greenhouse (page 82). While we were less than an hour away from Atlanta, the idyllic environment felt world’s away from the city. Talk about rejuvenating. What brings you closer to your inner sanctum? Search for it and embrace it. And use your summer wisely!

THE BEAUTY SECRET OF THIS Peachtree Battle home’s “hers” bath, designed by Courtney Giles, began with the homeowner’s love of a certain countertop. “She called me and said, ‘I saw this beautiful pink marble, and I would love to use it in my bathroom,’” Giles says. “That was two years ago when construction was first starting. We didn’t have any idea what the bathroom was going to look like.” Giles paired the pink, taupe and white countertops with a pink desert marble tile from Waterworks, which she says was a perfect match. The addition of a custom quatrefoil border around the tile creates a center “rug” for the room. The petal-like motif continues in the metal chandelier and trim on the drapery

panels, lending itself to the bathroom’s feminine quality. “Finding tile to complement the pink slab was probably the biggest challenge,” Giles says. “Then, figuring out the rug design.” Cut mirrors line up with the vanity cabinetry and frame delicate sconces with custom pink shades. Details such as cutcrystal hardware from the Matthew Quinn Collection further enhance the bath’s feminine wiles, while the homeowner’s collection of antique silver jars, brushes and mirrors, along with a pink upholstered vanity chair, maintain old-fashioned charm in a modern setting. While Giles’ client wanted something different from the typical white bathroom, it was also important that the space avoid the look of a Barbie dream house. To that end, white Thassos marble covers the rest of the heated floors, while taupe walls provide a neutral backdrop for the pink palette of the countertops, floors and fabrics. The lines of the shapely freestanding tub add a modern verve while allowing the focus to remain on the tile work. It’s a clean space, Giles says, with refined old-school glamour. 15

SCALED TO SOPHISTICATION

Harrison Design’s Karen Ferguson brings intimacy and beauty to a sprawling master bath. PHOTOGRAPHED BY Sarah

Dorio

NOT ONE TO FEEL OVERWHELMED by a large space, designer Karen Ferguson was instead emboldened by the dramatic scale of this Sandy Springs master bath. The 400-square-foot room was able to accommodate a long shower with multiple showerheads and sprays, a separate tub, dual vanities and a cozy seating area. The blue-gray palette of the Bianco Carrara marble shower walls set the tone for the rest of the lavish bath. “I worked from that corner out,” says Ferguson, director of the interior design studio at Harrison Design. “The marble panels in the shower lead to the wood panels in the bathroom, which makes it feel cozier and more intimate.” The bathroom, says Ferguson, was intended to feel like an extension of the living area and have the same personality as the rest of the home. The custom cabinetry is the same color

18

as the wood panels, while additional elements, such as walnut floors, a delicate chandelier, sheer Roman shades and Moattar rugs, create a tranquil retreat with a scale that remains intimate enough for two. “It’s not just a utilitarian space,” Ferguson says. “It’s a space where you can hang out and be comfortable.” A mix of metallic finishes adds layers of interest, while an antique floor mirror, made from wood with gold leaf, adds patina and a romantic air. The mirror, purchased in Los Angeles, stands tall behind a rectangular freestanding tub that commands attention, rather than disappearing in the substantial space. Soft curves soften the tub’s appearance, beckoning the homeowners to relax and rest. It’s a careful interplay between textures and shapes. “I think this space feels calm and serene because of the mix of materials and finishes,” Ferguson says.

MASTERFUL SUITE Rothman + Rothman Design mixes raw materials and handmade features to create a bath that’s anything but run-of-the-mill. PHOTOGRAPHED BY David STYLED BY Yvonne

WHEN JAMES BOND EXPLODES his family’s countryside manor in the 2012 movie Skyfall, he says, “I always hated this place.” But unlike the fictional secret agent, Eric and Jenny Rothman’s clients wanted to love their remodeled Decatur home, whose Tudor design was inspired by Bond’s ancestral lodge in Scotland. To achieve this in the master bathroom, rough, organic elements and sleek style—in the form of concrete and wood— collide to complete the clients’ vision of a room with both texture and warmth. “This is a very clean, simple, modern space, but with the same kind of rustic, raw, handmade elements that you could

22

expect to find in a Tudor house,” Eric says. Some ideas emerged organically in discussions between the designers and the homeowners. Because the tub’s placement would allow water to flow in from the side, for example, the four were excited to select an unconventional tub filler. A trough carved out of concrete now flows into the freestanding tub, creating an eye-catching water feature. The concrete continues to create a bench that embraces the tub, which is sunk into the floor. Teak-lined niches to the right and left store towels. Across the room, the shower is accented with a glass mosaic tower that feels as though it has been pulled from the opposite wall. Within the shower, two white laminated glass panels give a shoji screen effect, capturing light from other parts of the home and casting a glow from the bathroom. Dual vanities with waterfall edges are placed in a wall niche between the tub and shower that adds depth and dimension. A horizontal band of mirrors inset above each serves as a piece of art. “Our signature, whether or not it’s a traditional house or a modern house, is to try to simplify and create cleaner lines,” Eric says. Mission accomplished.

The 2016 Luxury Living Show, presented by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles at Phipps Plaza, exhibited the freshest trends in kitchen, bath and outdoor living, offering a glimpse into what’s next.

F

or an upclose and personal look at the year’s most covetable trends, the seventhannual Luxury Living Show provided a hands-on showcase of the latest high-end products from across the globe. Presented by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles at Phipps Plaza, the 2016 exhibition was a study in understated elegance, featuring the expertly designed Dream Kitchen, Dream Bath and Outdoor Living Display—each as ultra-chic as its luxury fashion surroundings. Designed by Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios, the kitchen boasted a fresh, neutral palette complemented by thoughtful details and textured elements. “Our vision for this year’s design was to create a classic Atlanta kitchen that was sophisticated and elegant—but with a dash of unexpected flair,” says Courtney Foster Shearer, senior designer at Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios. Inset cabinetry, painted a glossy taupe, provides a dose of tailored interest, as do custom refrigerator doors (inspired by an Instagram photo of a pair of doors in Paris) and a weathered white oak hutch that feels more like a piece of furniture than kitchen storage. To counterbalance the cabinetry’s detail, a stunning Cambria marble was selected for both the backsplash and the countertops, imparting an understated yet chic touch.

A thousand reasons for our refrigeration system. Or as we call them: 1,648 combination options.

The difference is Gaggenau. Great cuisine starts with storing food properly. That’s why the 400 series modular refrigeration is stainless steel on the outside and the inside, a quality standard otherwise only found in professional cold storage. Other extraordinary features are the new LED lighting pillars, a continuously adjustable motorized shelf and the temperaturecontrolled drawer. This is a real stainless steel fridge - inside and out - fully loaded with all of our food storage expertise. For more information, please visit www.gaggenau-usa.com or RAO Design Studio, Inc.‘s midtown storefront location at 905 Juniper St., NE Suite CU-B, Atlanta, GA (404.815.5655), where you can experience the Gaggenau difference with live cooking demonstrations.

“I think a big trend for today’s kitchen is the ability to play up focal elements like hoods, refrigerators and islands in a way that really shows off what a little creativity and some custom millwork can do,” says Shearer. CSI Kitchen & Bath Studio took a similarly clean approach in the bath, where sleek lines and a crisp color scheme in multiple hues produce a spa-like feel. Shower and tub panels made from a high-performance Neolith in a non-tile application create a seamless, durable surface that requires minimal maintenance. Frameless cabinetry in the his-and-hers vanities maximizes storage

space, creating a polished aesthetic alongside glossy Quartzite counters and chrome faucetry. “We wanted to choose something that would lend itself to the transitional style of this bath,” says CSI’s Mimi Clausen. A balance of classic luxury and cutting-edge style was on display in the outdoor living area by Diversified Cabinet Distributors, Inc., in which Alfresco cooking surfaces are ideal for summer barbecues or garden parties. Hard-wearing countertops from Levantina and salvaged wood accents give a nod to nature while standing up to wear and tear.

Continuum Sink

The Continuum sink is a re-imagination of an everyday object. Designed by internationally renowned kitchen and bath designer Matthew Quinn, Continuum is a semi-recessed sink that utilizes the countertop hole cut-out as the sink bottom, enabling the striations of the counter material to visually flow through the sink. The countertop cut-out sits on three leveling feet to form a faux bottom of the sink. Continuum is fashioned in MTI’s proprietary Engineered Solid Stone™, a mixture of natural ground materials and high-performance resins. It is non-porous, 100% solid and easy to maintain. With nearly 65% of the material being organic, Continuum is also environmentally friendly.

Recently, buyers from Latin America and Central America have outpaced those from China, Rodriguez says. The Chinese are interested in commercial properties and investment rentals, especially as China’s currency has been devalued. However, most international buyers are still paying cash because of

Naomi Von Habersham MINT-GREEN WALL TILE with matching sink and tub. That was the bathroom decor in my first post-college apartment. Every time I walked in, I felt as though I was drowning in a sea of crème de menthe. And just like drinking too much of that minty liqueur, my green bathroom always seemed to cast a sickly pallor over me, making me look as though I was perpetually nauseated—never a flattering look. Thankfully, since moving from that first apartment, I have never been dealt another green bathroom. Come to think of it, I’ve never touched another drop of crème de menthe either. Perhaps that mint-green disaster prejudiced me against color in a bathroom, because for years I considered white to be the only acceptable color for one. Who doesn’t love a gleaming white bath, which can be so easily adapted to fit almost any style of decor? When treated to creamy marble, brass or chrome fixtures and a luxurious soaking tub, an allwhite bathroom channels the stately good looks of a classic European hotel, such as Claridge’s or The Ritz. On the other hand, when outfitted with cutting-edge fixtures that look almost futuristic, it becomes a bastion of contemporary chic. But oddly enough, after years of worshiping at the whitebathroom altar, I’m starting to change my tune in favor of a judicious use of color. Neutral colors, such as gray or taupe, look particularly swell when partnered with white, as do pinks and blues, which lend some excitement to that unassuming trifecta of white sink, white toilet and white tub. And wallpaper, whether a graphic print or even a panoramic scene, can elevate a basic bath to a sybaritic oasis. Now that I think of it, I just might paper mine with scenes of Paris. That way, I can soak in my tub, imagining that I’m strolling down the Champs-Élysées. No matter how I might update my bathroom, though, you can rest assured of one thing: I will never live with mint-green fixtures again.

INTERIOR DESIGNER BETH WEBB approaches each project with a steadfast rule: The home must reflect the personality of its owners. So when she spotted Lisa and Nick McKay’s impressive art collection during a visit to their home, Webb decided to make it the centerpiece of the home’s renovation—and for good reason. “The art is not only really stunning but it’s an intensely personal collection,” says Webb. All of varying sizes and mediums, the sculptures, maquettes and medals are by Lisa’s late grandfather, Henry Kreis, an accomplished German-born sculptor who immigrated to the United States in 1922. After studying at the BeauxArts Institute of Design in New York City, Kreis apprenticed with Paul Manship, a highly influential American sculptor. As an assistant to Manship, Kreis worked on Rockefeller Center’s world-famous Prometheus sculpture. He went on to have a highly regarded career himself, earning accolades and commissions across the country. “I have loved and coveted all his sculptures and other works since I was a child,” says Lisa. “My father recently passed on a very large portion of his collection to me at once, and I was at a loss on how to showcase them because I wanted each piece to be appreciated.” To make the artwork a focal point Webb added pedestals, shelving and other displays throughout the home to give the sculptures—once tucked into corners, relegated to the floor or even in storage—prominent viewing. And although there are countless works on display, including beautiful silk-screen prints by Lisa’s late grandmother, Patricia Alden Kreis, it never feels overwhelming, thanks to Webb’s thoughtful planning, no doubt influenced by her background in art history.

Webb came across the striking watercolor ostrich painting by Heather Lancaster via Spalding Nix Fine Art’s Instagram account. Its soft coloring was a perfect match for the room’s plaster and terra-cotta sculptures that are displayed on the new niche shelves. The sofas and pillows are from Bungalow Classic.

from Bungalow Classic complement the custom headboard. opposite In the master bedroom, a curtained wall adds softness. Webb dressed up the existing bed with bedding from Peacock Alley and custom pillows.

Also top of mind for Webb was to scale and soften the home’s interiors. In the living room, the fireplace was given a complete overhaul, as the designer deemed its petite proportions too small for the space. Also under scale was the contemporary leather furniture that exuded an uninviting ambience. “[The McKays] weren’t using this room much because it felt very uncomfortable,” says Webb. She gave the room new life by commissioning a handsome stone fireplace and layering in plush textures. Bedrooms also received a makeover, including the master bedroom that was retrofitted with a curtained wall. “Just like the rest of the home, this space needed to be more approachable. We accomplished that by adding layers of soft textures,” Webb says. “There’s a lot of consideration that goes into the parts and pieces when decorating.” Webb’s attention to detail is a trait familiar to Lisa. “My grandfather’s forms are very simple yet very strong,” says Lisa. “They have a natural and soothing simplicity to them. He never wanted to create a piece that had anything unnecessary in it. It’s a philosophy that’s echoed in her home’s interiors—peaceful and pared down, yet full of panache.” See Resources, Back of Book 65

MELANIE TURNER INTERIORS CULTIVATES A STATEMENT-MAKING FRESH START FOR A BACHELOR AND HIS YOUNG SON IN BUCKHEAD.

Style meets function in the combination livingdining room of this Buckhead residence by interior designer Melanie Turner and associate Jill Tompkins. To keep the aesthetic masculine, stylish, but also fresh, they began by selecting a bold Duralee fabric for the draperies; its pared down color palette influenced the home’s overall design direction. The dining table is by Amy Howard and the Klismos chairs are by Global Views.

WHEN SINGLE FATHER JON WINSETT WAS LOOKING to make a fresh start in his newly purchased Buckhead home, he entrusted the task of this new beginning to designer Melanie Turner. Having long admired Turner’s clean and edited aesthetic, he gave the designer and her associate Jill Tompkins free rein in creating a comfortable home for him and his young son that was equal parts stylish and functional. Recalls Turner, “Our aesthetics lined up, so he was open to everything we presented,” the first of which included bold drapery panels in nearly every room. Thoughtfully selected drapery motifs—such as the tribal print in the son’s nursery that pays homage to his maternal South African heritage—also work to inject energy into purposely pared-down rooms, creating calm yet powerful spaces. And while “bachelor pads” typically follow a dark wood-and-leather design formula, Turner encouraged Winsett to go for the unexpected. “Our job is to push clients a

little out of their comfort zone but still be conscious of what they’re seeking,” she says. Homing in on Winsett’s original directive for a stylish and sophisticated home, Turner employed her trademark juxtaposition of masculine and feminine elements for an alluring effect. In the master bedroom, a delicate cascading chandelier and soft color palette temper the room’s more ornate and substantial furnishings, while a series of metal flowers framed in acrylic boxes graces the living room. “We love how they have beautiful feminine silhouettes yet are mounted on this dark linen and made of an earthy metal,” notes Turner. “We’re always riding that balance in our designs, as it’s important for both men and women to feel at ease in any given space.” This project also required that its youngest occupant feel at ease. No room is off-limits to the son, thanks to a mix of kidfriendly fabrics, such as a waxed-linen reading chair in the master bedroom, and genius storage solutions (the living room coffee table features hidden drawers for crayons and books). The designers also included additional seating in the kitchen, “as boys typically eat over the sink,” jokes Turner. With accomodating the father and son’s lifestyle as their ultimate goal, Turner and Tompkins repurposed the existing dining room into an in-home gym and playroom, as the living room’s large proportions were able to accommodate a dining table for six. With the kitchen in full view from the new combination living/dining room, the openconcept floor plan accomodates conversation and closeness, essentials for any great family home. IT’S A HUMID, MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT at Summerland Farm, the 60-acre family property of culinary queen Anne Quatrano and husband/business partner Clifford Harrison, but it feels a few degrees cooler than Atlanta, thanks to both the farm’s elevation and its proximity to the Etowah River in the foothills of northern Georgia. Suited just as well to a picturesque trail ride as it is to harvesting a year-round abundance of ingredients, the grounds— and its menagerie of animals, including horses, pigs, goats, chickens, dogs and roosters—are quintessentially “Annie.” The farm may have been in her family for five generations, but the refined-rustic farmhouse she and Harrison have built for themselves is a testament to their deep-rooted love of the land. And, just like the earthy, eye-catching displays Quatrano cultivates at her Westside market, Star Provisions, the intimate setting she’s designed inside her greenhouse for 10 (a rare dinner at which she will also be a seated guest), there’s

a palpable artist’s eye evident at every turn. Potted succulents, ferns and plants dot the farm table’s center, while terrariums hang above from braided ropes with tassels. Wicker chairs provide a touch of home. It’s the type of dimension Quatrano is famous for creating in her restaurants, yet a look that’s so relaxed as to feel gloriously effortless—no easy feat considering the celebrated grand dame of Atlanta’s farm-to-table movement will also serve as the gracious hostess this evening, fostering intimate conversation among a group of Atlanta interior designers eager to hear her perspective. The compelling atmosphere Quatrano has cultivated on their behalf is complemented, of course, by a seasonally influenced menu, one which also serves as dry run for the tasting menu that will appear at Floataway Cafe this month. Harrison has been enlisted to complement each course with wines from his cellar, and the results are unerring. The first course: oyster on the half-shell with strawberry mignonette, garnished with a Summerland nasturtium and paired with a Champagne Aubry Brut Rosé. An aromatic stew, a whole 86

black bass bourride follows, the happy result of young leeks and small potatoes plucked from Summerland. A 2006 Peter Michael chardonnay is its weighty counterpart. The composition of the main course—a pot-roasted hen served with a savory panzanella and floral flourishes from her garden—is classic Annie, a dish that eloquently espouses her ingredients-driven philosophy. The final two courses, a Capriole Farm goat cheese with Summerland blackberry preserve and toasted brioche, and a wood-roasted Georgia peach with chamomile ice milk and shortbread crumble, are the proverbial cherry on top. Paired with a fragrant Alvear Pedro Ximenez, it’s clear as this blue Summerland sky as to why Quatrano’s restaurants are bastions for special occasion celebrations. And, as Quatrano unearths the stories behind her family’s acreage, her penchant for hiring talents who become part of their family, and the couple’s unending battle with Georgia’s red-clay soil, we learn from her as well: “work” should never be a chore; and pragmatism can usher in delightful abundance. LIFE

MARCIA SHERRILL MARCIA’S FAVORITE PLACES

A SOAKING TUB

Has there ever been a more luxurious amenity than a grandly appointed master bath? Marcia explores the evolution of what has become the ultimate private sanctuary.

N

OW MOTHER’S DAY MAY HAVE COME AND GONE, but I guarantee you that at the top of many Atlanta mom’s list was this: a private, luxuriously solo soak in a tub with the door locked, a glass of wine within arm’s reach and reading material at the ready in the event a quick snooze was not the order of the hour. Indeed, a luxurious bath has become the ultimate escape for the modern-day woman—especially for us moms desperately seeking a moment of serenity. With kids underfoot in basically every other room of the house, the bath is by comparison a veritable spa. It’s here that we envision enjoying Portuguese soaps, French shampoo and towels that rival The Ritz-Carlton’s (although many of us may need to actually visit a Ritz-Carlton to soak up that experience). Earlier this month, my brother and I embarked on a renovation of my mother’s 1970s bathrooms and, faced with all 96

the options available today, were like giddy schoolgirls shopping for marble and tile that looked fit for a king. Gone are the shag carpeting, utilitarian hardware and knobs, and avocado tile (side note: did you know that avocado was actually a color trend at the 2016 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show? No, thank you). In their place we have tile floors, marble countertops, antique sconces, gilt-framed mirrors and surround tubs. But Mama couldn’t help it. My grandparents viewed the bathroom as a place of pure function, herding in their nine children for bathtime, praying that no one drowned and they didn’t run out of Perl shampoo. The floors were perpetually soaked with an inch of standing water, towels were heaped in teetering towers and soap was in scant supply. My parents may have upgraded with octagonal tile and large slab mirrors (there are likely 20 million of these baths across the U.S.!), but I sure am thankful I’m a 21st-century woman.

ERICA GEORGE DINES

Designer Susan Ferrier filled this marble-clad master bath with grand gestures, such as a crystal chandelier and striking artwork. A sheer drapery behind the tub adds softness.
