design scene in their own right. You may have heard the mantra, “Buy well, and you only cry once.” As you’ll see in these features (starting on page 65), the creatives featured in this issue are also semiprofessional shoppers, buying only what they’ve loved until they’ve found the square footage to make their treasures a cohesive whole. What’s most fascinating about these designer’s homes is the subtle tricks of the trade they’ve employed to make their spaces live much larger than its price tags. Kelly Wolf-

CHARMING CHINOISERIE Romance, history and whimsy combine for an infusion of color and nature-inspired elements Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

IN 1275, MARCO POLO WROTE OF THE MAJESTY AND BEAUTY OF THE “gilt and lacquered bamboo, dragons and pagodas” when he visited Xanadu, the summer palace of Kublai Khan. Eight centuries later, the world remains fascinated with chinoiserie—the term describing East Asian-influenced design that is derived from the French word “Chinois” meaning “Chinese.” When the East India Company was founded in 1600, trade between Asia, Europe and Britain changed the global economy, lifestyle and design. As Europeans and Britons became dependent on imported Chinese tea, the products to consume tea became equally paramount. From the very humble teacup, a design aesthetic was born many centuries ago. above The dining room at Rosewood, a West Paces Ferry estate originally designed by architect Philip T. Shutze and decorated by Margaret Kirkland; coral doors and a scenic wallpaper add fantastical effect. right De Gournay’s handpainted scenes remain a hallmark of style; the Jardinieres Citrus Trees design, available through AinsworthNoah, is pictured.

20

ROYAL ROOTS Louis XV of France and King George IV of England were enamored with all aspects of chinoiserie. From exquisite porcelains to hand-painted silk wallcoverings and papier-mâché trays, royal palaces oozed romantic designs rooted in fantastical scenes of nature. Thomas Chippendale infused his renowned Rococo chairs to create the style now known as “Chinese Chippendale.” Throughout England, France, Sweden and the Netherlands, Asian-influenced designs were incorporated into interiors, architecture, landscapes and fashion.

POPULARIZATION In the 1920s and ’30s, renowned designers Elsie de Wolfe and Ruby Ross Wood were keen on including chinoiserie in their interiors. Even modernist Eileen Gray painstakingly created authentically layered, lacquered screens. From flamboyant gilt pagodas to sublime silk fabrics and lacquer, the 20th century remained captivated by chinoiserie. 21st-century designers are enchanted with chinoiserie due to the romance, history and whimsy the elements instill in a room while also providing unique visuals that pique interest. From large, sweeping design statements such as encapsulating a room in chinoiserie wallpaper to merely placing a porcelain lamp on a contemporary table, chinoiserie provides an engaging aesthetic.

DISTINGUISHING MARKS The color palette of chinoiserie is broad and ranges from traditional combinations such as black with gold leaf to renowned blue-and-white. The rich colors of East Asia, including cinnamon, yellow, turquoise and green, are used in both pale iterations as well as boldly saturated statements. While color is important, the incorporation of elements of the natural world defines it more than the palette.

MASS MARKET Today, a vast selection of products at a wide range of prices is available. From hand-painted designs at renowned historic reproduction companies to contemporary shelter catalogs, Asian-influenced designs are attainable. While most of us do not live in bamboo pagodas beneath swaying palm trees with hummingbirds darting through cherry blossoms, it’s delightfully entertaining that chinoiserie permits us that interior design fantasy. 21

Chamblee Calling

WHEN WHOLE FOODS MARKET AND MARTA collide—à la Chamblee’s rising real estate, restaurant and retail scene—the results are a “new era of retail and restaurant amenities being ushered in for that corridor,” says Fain Hicks, senior director for Cushman & Wakefield, which represented the seller in the Peachtree Boulevard center’s recent sale. The population density and affluent demographics are compelling: “The project served a huge need for the community, which is shifting quickly with the onslaught of new residential development,” Hicks says. Luxury rents in Chamblee have crested $2 per square foot, notes Robert Stickel, executive director of Cushman & Wakefield’s Atlanta office, which is marketing the Solis Parkview mixed-use development. Rents surpass Brookhaven but are still below Midtown rents, which are approaching $3 per square foot. “Chamblee has a real sense of place,” Stickel says.

PREVIEW

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS THE WEATHER OUTSIDE MAY BE SWELTERING, but the oversize fireplace in this 8,232-square-foot English country estate is so delightful. Take a break from the heat with a sneak peek of the 10th annual Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse, open November 15 through December 9, which is inspired by its 1.5-acre Buckhead location and the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens. An exterior of Indiana limestone, capped by a sweeping Vermont slate roof and iron doors and windows, will distinguish the Jett Road home. Surprises inside include a 6-foot-wide masonry fireplace in the open kitchen and living area. “For Atlanta, this is a big fireplace,” says Steve McGlamery of Steve McGlamery Custom Homes. “It just makes the living room/ kitchen area a much nicer area to sit and have a conversation and 24

have family around, especially for the holidays.” Frank Heery and Rick Hatch of architecture firm Harrison Design say the floor plan and use of windows create sunlit spaces, a signature of the 19th-century British architect who also was known for symmetrical design and gables. The showhouse’s second floor will have a long galley of windows. “It will light up the stair hall in the morning from that side, and then the sun will come in the stair hall in the evenings, through the central core of the house,” Hatch says. The five-bedroom, eight-bath showhome, which has 11-foot ceilings, also will have a basement, bonus room and three-car garage. Two loggias will be placed to the side, giving full-on pool views from the kitchen and living room. “You don’t have dark hallways in this house,” says Hatch. “It’s going to be very bright.”

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham Ǥ Ǥ

THEY SAY A DESIGNER’S BEST ADVERTISEMENT IS his or her own home. With no difficult clients or unrealistic budgets getting in the way, designers can do as they please when decorating their homes, meaning that they can experiment, be bold and fully express their visions with no interference. And if the results are generally pleasing (and they usually are), designers can expect to gain reams of publicity from their homes. Just think about that mirrored bathroom in Miles Redd’s Manhattan townhouse. I wonder how many articles were published on that room alone. Then there are all of Bunny Williams’ ravishing personal residences, which have been featured in copious magazine and newspaper articles, not to mention a clutch of books. I don’t know about you, but I never tire of seeing how Bunny lives. Some of my favorite designer homes are not particularly large. I’m thinking of two different apartments inhabited by the late T. Gordon Little, one of Atlanta’s design legends. Neither apartment was terribly big, nor was there anything exceptional about the architecture. But, boy, what was present was terrific. Blue-and-white porcelains, some well-chosen antique furniture, contemporary fabrics (I recall a snow leopard print in one room), and all-around sophisticated charm. His homes were proof that you can live large in a small space. Going back even further in time, there was Billy Baldwin’s famous one-room Manhattan apartment, which was little more than a box. But the sheer volume of style and panache that he managed to pack into that one room! Glossy, chocolate-brown walls, slipper chairs and sofa slipcovered in plain ivory cotton, and the unexpected combination of lacquered brass bookshelves and rattan furniture. Has there been a more influential interior in design history? I would argue not. There are two lessons to be learned here. First, designers can do wonders with homes, even if they lack size and architectural stature. And second, you can learn a lot about design—and designers—by studying their homes.

ESTLED NEXT DOOR to Decatur’s Brick Store Pub, The White Bull, led by executive chef and partner Pat Pascarella—previously executive chef at The Optimist— showcases seasonal and vegetable-forward dishes that source ingredients entirely from Georgia. It’s a menu that Pascarella describes as “farm-forward, nose-to-tail,” where everything from the pasta to the butter is made from scratch, and Pascarella draws from a variety of influences. This approach is inspired by the restaurant’s name, “The White Bull,” a phrase Ernest Hemingway used to describe a blank page. “It’s a clean slate. We don’t want to be tied to any specific cuisine; we want it to just flow,” says Pascarella. “The simplicity of the design is a reflection of that as well,” adds partner and general manager Gabriele Besozzi. Guests will find items that reference Hemingway throughout the restaurant—fishing poles, books, a typewriter—as well as sleek subway tile, Edison bulbs and reclaimed wood. “The philosophy of The White Bull is to sustain our community of farmers and showcase their products,” says Besozzi. I think Decatur will really engage in our ultimate goal and appreciate the effort.” whitebullatl.com

CASHIERS DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE JULY 27 – AUGUST 5, 2018 FOX TAIL PRESENTED BY THE CASHIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY OPENING NIGHT GALA Friday, July 27 • 6:30 – 10:30 p.m. OPENING DAY Saturday, July 28 • 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

GENERAL INFORMATION The CASHIERS DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE (CDS) is presented every year by the CASHIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY in partnership with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. Proceeds benefit the Cashiers Historical Society’s mission and cultural programming. This year, the Cashiers Designer Showhouse welcomes you to Lake Glenville. The beautiful estate home sits on 42 acres directly across the lake from Trillium and boasts, among other things, a view of the lake itself. Inspired by the châteaux of Italy and France, the home is the ideal palette for visiting design professionals that have been invited to unleash their creativity. The week of the Showhouse will be full of energy and style, with an Opening Night Gala on July 27, numerous lectures and book signings, and the opportunity to learn from the masters during demonstrations by notable artists and designers. The festivities conclude with a Closing Croquet Brunch on Sunday, August 5.

SHOWHOUSE LUMINARIES LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR As the executive director of the Cashiers Historical Society and the director of the Cashiers Designer Showhouse, I am thrilled to welcome attendees to the 10-day fundraiser filled with exciting demonstrations from special guests, showcased work from talented designers and signature gifts from our generous sponsors. Our organization’s mission is primarily funded by the Cashiers Designer Showhouse, and through your support, we are able to fulfill our mission of preserving the heritage of Cashiers Valley through education, stewardship and advocacy. Your participation in the Cashiers Designer Showhouse makes our commitment to maintaining the integrity and beauty of this part of the Blue Ridge Mountains possible. Without the dedicated Showhouse volunteers, staff, contributors and attendees, the Society would be unable to offer its educational programs, preserve Cashiers’ history and maintain the historic Zachary-Tolbert House Museum. This year’s Showhouse will take place at the sprawling Fox Tail estate on Lake Glenville, owned by Brenda and Terry Beye. We are thrilled to have so many designers, artists, demonstrators and sponsors involved in this year’s Designer Showhouse. We are incredibly grateful for the Beye family’s generosity and for allowing us to utilize their beautiful home for such an amazing week of events. I want to sincerely thank all of the dedicated people who worked tirelessly throughout the year to ensure its success. In addition to the estate owners, I also want to thank the Cashiers Historical Society Board of Directors for their support in allowing me to work on this exciting and rewarding project. For this year’s Showhouse, it was our goal to refine the overall attendee experience, while still retaining the elegance, heritage, and mission built over the last twenty years. In addition to tours of the Showhouse, we are thrilled to host exquisite events and demonstrations throughout the week. The Cashiers Historical Society looks forward to featuring some of the country’s top designers, local artisans, and Southern tastemakers—defining the 2018 Cashiers Designer Showhouse as one to remember. Thank you again for being part of this exciting fundraiser. We look forward to hosting you! Many thanks,

A very big thank you from CHS to all of our Private Benefactors and other shining stars. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

ABOUT THE HOUSE This year, the Cashiers Historical Society is pleased to welcome you to Fox Tail, site of the 2018 Cashiers Designer Showhouse. High on a grassy knoll overlooking Lake Glenville, the home the home was built by area residents Terry & Brenda Beye and is inspired by the old châteaux of southern France and northern Italy. From dawn’s first light to the east over Glassy Rock to halcyon sunsets to the west over the lake, this 42-acre estate is awash in a natural, personal and cultural history as unique as the story of the lake itself. The property was originally part of the Monteith Homestead, which had been apportioned to the family’s heirs. Each heir received a plot not of the same size, but with the same number of natural springs. A series of paths now connect old logging trails from the early 1900s that crisscross the property and wind through the forest, showcasing the bountiful flora and fauna that also call this place home. Visitors to the Showhouse can wander the groves of native Flame Azaleas, Trillium, Turk’s caps, Galax and Jack-in-the pulpit as red-tailed hawks, owls and pileated woodpeckers alight overhead. Historic buildings on the property center on the white six-room Monteith farmhouse. Across the property you will find a barn, tractor shed and chicken coop, as well as the Spring House, a stone and wood 18

structure that maintains a delightfully cool temperature year-round, leading to its use as a wine cellar. At the center of this stunning landscape sits the Main House and its companion Carriage House. Both homes were designed by the property’s owners with the assistance of architect George Storrs and built by Hub Powell of Rosman in 2001 and 1998, respectively. The home is a balance between historical charm and modern convenience. Visibly thick and stained exterior walls act as a buffer against the elements while recalling the European countryside aesthetic that inspired it. Inside, the hand-cut, patterned and inlaid marble floors stay cool in the summer but have been augmented with underfloor heating for cold Blue Ridge Mountain winters. Balconies off the upstairs office and bedroom afford visitors with grand views over the lake. High ceilings, hidden doors and a dose of old hardware round out the stylishly rustic yet thoroughly modern living spaces. The Cashiers Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the beauty and identity of our piece of North Carolina, and Fox Tail has certainly earned its place among the rich traditions and storied history of our mountain home.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRS High on a hill in western North Carolina sits a home that could be anywhere. Italy, France, England, each would suit this architectural tour de force. Imposing and stately, it possesses a vista many would envy. A clear blue mountain lake before it fades into a distance which is ringed by the Blue Ridge Mountains standing majestically in the background. To say the house is elegantly appointed would not be doing it justice. The inlaid marble floors, designed and executed by the owner’s wife, are exquisite, as are the elaborate wood carvings. As one walks along the central hallway of the house, passing a gracious dining room, a sumptuous master suite, and a conservatory with a splashing fountain, one finally comes to the terrace door. Beyond the door is a garden patio with a view of the lake and mountains to take ones breath away. We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to exhibit this house, the Cashiers Designer Showhouse™ of 2018. We hope you enjoy this special house as much as its owners have. THE CASHIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY was established in 1996 to preserve and protect the village identity and heritage of Cashiers Valley through education, stewardship and advocacy. Each year we produce and present the Cashiers Designer Showhouse, our largest fundraising endeavor. Your generosity and support of this important event help us continue and further our mission. Here are just a few of the highlights from the past year and what’s ahead at CHS: Heritage Apple Day: In early spring, a talented team of staff, volunteers and experts host this daylong event. Attendees learn how to plant and groom heritage trees, helping to ensure the livelihood of the varieties that nourished our forefathers. We provide the rootstocks and scions used for grafting at no charge, and everyone gets to take home a tree to plant in their yard or garden. This year’s event also featured live music, kids’ activities and a photo booth for attendees to capture the memories of the day. Zachary-Tolbert House Reopens: That’s right—we’ve finished the restoration of our beloved landmark and are excited to invite the public back for tours and activities centered in and around the home. Visitors are also invited to peruse the fourth phase of our Places & Faces series, which will be on exhibit in the house for the next year. New Lecture Series: The Cashiers Historical Society calendar for 2018 featured a new historical lecture series at the Dowden Pavilion on the Zachary-Tolbert grounds. Each speaker will discuss a topic historically relevant to the Cashiers Valley. This year’s featured speakers include local historian Jane Nardy, registered landscape architect Mary Palmer Dargan, and Executive Director of The Land Trust, Dr. Gary Wein. Visit our website for the full event calendar. Something Old, Something New: This year also saw the return of our iconic logo featuring the scrollwork and leaf pattern. We’ve reinstituted the logo as part of our commitment to preserving our heritage as well as that of Cashiers. You may notice, though, that we’ve given it a new home to live in. Visit our new, easy-to-navigate website at CashiersHistoricalSociety.org and take a look around!

Grayson Pratt

Sara Brown

Francie Hargrove

Jamie Elliott McPherson has been involved in the interior design industry in the Southeast for over 20 years, where his career began as a certified kitchen designer while working in Atlanta. After receiving many clients’ requests to take his design expertise from the kitchen to the rest of the house, McPherson began offering full interior design services for the whole home. His love for creating classic, comfortable, and inspired living spaces naturally led him to expand into the event planning industry. He and his husband, Tra Raines, own Vinewood Plantation in Newnan, Ga. Vinewood is a much-desired historic wedding venue where Jamie can combine his eye for design and love for entertaining. So whether McPherson is redecorating your master bedroom or planning your dream wedding, rest assured that the results will be timeless with a twist and be an authentic representation of who you are.

As long as Grayson can remember, she has had a love for interior design. Much of her work is inspired by the colors and style of the South Carolina Lowcountry where she was raised. After studying Interior Design at the University of Tennessee, Pratt spent many years serving clients in the interiors industry, beginning her work in High Point, North Carolina. She later relocated to Atlanta and furthered her career by working at a showroom in the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. She is now serving clients through her own firm, Grayson Pratt Interiors. Whatever your style, Pratt will ease your stress by blending design with personality to create a beautiful home that is uniquely yours.

When interviewed about her approach to interior design Sara replied, “Form may follow function but when it comes to someone’s home, they are the starting point for its design.” Brown took her company Sara Brown Designs nationwide just two years after graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design. Keeping the lifestyle of her clients in the forefront of every project, she takes an innovative approach by creating a home that is both beautiful and functional. The focus of her work allows each client the opportunity to discover their own personal style, resulting in an enviroment that represents them and what they love. When asked she will tell you, “This is what makes a house a home.” Brown holds a Bachelor of Arts in interior design.

Francie Hargrove’s innate sense of style was evident from an early age, when she would crisscross the South with her grandparents in search of wonderful antiques. Her great appreciation for all things timeless and classic are a hallmark of her interior design work and signature line of home décor items. Hargrove graduated with an FA in Interior Design from Brenau Women’s College and apprenticed with Betty Fincher Interiors of Atlanta and Naples before launching her own design firm in Georgia. After 16 years, she relocated to Cashiers, NC, where she has developed her own line of pillows, lamps, decorative accessories and upholstery for her newest retail location.

KELLY WOLF-ANTHONY AND JUSTIN ANTHONY MIGHT JUST BE one of the hardest-working, most hospitable couples in Atlanta. Kelly is an accomplished designer whose Atlanta-based firm, Wolf Design Group, has worked predominantly outside of Georgia, and even internationally, for the past 20 years. And as Atlanta’s prevailing traditional aesthetic begins to shift, her signature style is finally calling her closer to home, with current projects including a new home for Spanx founder Sara Blakely. Her husband, Justin, is a former South African soccer star and the restaurateur behind such concepts as 10 Degrees South, Yebo Beach Haus, Cape Dutch and Biltong Bar (which he’s currently expanding into Buckhead). “We can’t get away very often because of the restaurants,” Justin explains. So when the pair sold their lake house and beach house, they began focusing on creating a destination in Atlanta. “We wanted to entertain, swim, have that fun lifestyle—without having to set out on a journey to do it,” he says. 69

The left wall bears bold images of a lion and a tiger from National Geographic; the “art” over the mantel is actually Samsung’s 4K Frame TV, which displays a series of art images when it senses movement; and a Todd Murphy piece is pictured at right.

When they bought a new house—a former 1940s hunting lodge—on the fringes of Chastain Park last year, it was with the aim of creating a welcoming destination. They spent six months with acclaimed builder Michael Ladisic, and the modern trailblazer pushed the Anthony’s to re-engineer the residence to fit their needs. “When it comes to your own home, you look at it differently. You look at dollars, and you look at time,” Kelly explains. “[Ladisic] is not just a contractor, he’s a visionary; he has an aesthetic. He 72

pushed us, and we ended up with something we loved.” For example, a wall between the kitchen and porch was transformed with floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall, bifold steel doors. “It makes a massive difference in natural light,” Kelly says. In the foyer, Ladisic adapted the staircase in a low-tech way to give it the appearance of curving. Closing off a double door to the study allowed room for an enormous Todd Murphy piece the couple had in storage for years. “It fits to the inch. It was basically perfect,” Kelly adds.

Beyond its stunning collections of art, the home’s interiors reflect the global influences and monochromatic color palette that have become Kelly’s signature. Influences range from high fashion to African safaris; tactile but casual fabrics and a neutral palette that’s “organic, earthy and modern,” she says. For the master bath, closet and kitchen, Ladisic and Kelly enlisted Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio’s Matthew Quinn to transform these spaces from drab to fabulous. The completion of their personal project means this highly hospitable couple can finally host their friends and associates—such as Atlanta Food & Wine Festival VIPs—indoors or out. “We have a small wine cellar, home theater, pool cabana and jacuzzi, bocce court, fire pit and grill area with both a Big Green Egg and braai, which is a South African grill,” Justin details. “It feels like a resort, somewhere between our two favorite places: Napa Valley and Old Edwards Inn.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Resort Living After spending more than two decades building their careers in both the design and hospitality fields, the Anthony’s—who are pioneering change in Atlanta’s evolving hospitality scene— have finally found (and fashioned) a home where they can host friends and associates. In their lush new landscape, the pool is punctuated by hydrangea and boxwood planters, while a newly added cabana, jacuzzi, fire pit, South Africanstyle braai—like the one at Justin’s Cape Dutch restaurant—a Big Green Egg, a well-equipped outdoor kitchen from Guy Gunter Home, and seating groups set in the shade of a Japanese maple collectively serve every entertaining whim.

Balanced Mix Interior designer Meredith McBrearty’s home office reects her penchant for taking design risks, as antique, vintage and more modern elements act in harmony. The hand-painted pillows by Martyn Thompson Studio are from M Naeve in Houston.

B

BEFORE INTERIOR DESIGNER Meredith McBrearty began renovations on her charming midcentury cottage that she shares with husband Lee and their three young children, she asked herself a key question that she always poses to her clients at the start of a project: “What do you want your home to feel like?”

82

While McBrearty’s job affords her access to the finest fabrics and most covetable furnishings, her design philosophy digs deeper, aiming to capture the essence of the homeowners and bring their story to life, rather than just filling a home with pretty things, she says. For McBrearty, her home is all about family. “I remember thinking, ‘This is going to be the house that my kids grow up in,’” says the designer. “A home is where so many of life’s important moments happen and I wanted to create a fun and fresh backdrop for those memories.” Her first order of business was to make the compact 1940s layout feel lighter and brighter by stripping the floors, gutting the kitchen, and painting every wall, both inside and out. Next up was filling the home with the things she and her family love—a few “design risks” included.

Studied Chic right This passthrough space was transformed into a library with the addition of bookshelves and a handsome arched opening. Skylar Morgan was commissioned to create a sleek white oak accent wall that serves as a backdrop for the room’s unique mix of furnishings. The curved couch was an eBay find that was given new life with gold velvet from Holland & Sherry and the coffee table, made of waxed oak by Nickey Kehoe in Los Angeles, was inspired by the work of iconic French designer Charlotte Perriand. The ceiling light is from The Urban Electric Co. and features a custom eggplant color. The bronze head and white chair are from R. Hughes.

Color Punch above The dining room is elegant but practical, says McBrearty, who recovered the vintage chairs in vinyl by Joseph Noble for easy cleanups. The designer’s penchant for creativity is evidenced by the sculptural piece above the mantle, which is powder-coated in a pale pink and set against antiqued mirror. Prints Charming left McBrearty in her home office. The painting is by Katharina Chapuis through Pryor Fine Art. below The kitchen’s blue-andwhite cement tile backsplash captures the family’s youthful spirit. opposite Unexpected combinations contribute to the charm of this home, including the breakfast room’s circa-1940s chairs from France that sidle up to a modern acrylic base table. Cabinetry by Georgia Cabinets & Millwork, Inc. conceals the fridge and freezer for a seamless look.

A graphic blue-and-white cement tile backsplash in the kitchen makes a bold statement, as does whimsical floral wallpaper in her youngest daughter’s bedroom. But McBrearty’s eclectic design style truly shines in her home office. Here, an antelope rug serves as the foundation for a classic Belgian-style sofa, a pair of vintage Milo Baughman chairs and an antique Italian inlaid-bone chair—all capped off with a sweeping chandelier that McBrearty playfully likens to a sombrero. “This room is a good example of how differing styles can actually work very well together,” she says. “I always encourage buying what you love, and then getting somebody who knows what they’re doing to pull it all together and really make it sing.” Another tip from the seasoned designer, who counts Washington, D.C., powerhouse design firm Solis Betancourt & Sherrill as the stepping stone for her design experience, is to splurge on an antique or two. “You can always count on the enduring appeal of well-loved, well-built furniture that have seen a few, or a hundred, years. Plus, in a home full of children, 87

Personal Space

they’re a solid investment as they’ve already stood up to the test of time,” says McBrearty. A quick glance around her home offers a glimpse of several antiques—from a Swedish armoire in the master bedroom to a French chest in the vestibule—that blend seamlessly into the home’s laid-back luxury aesthetic where modern and classic silhouettes comfortably mingle. For all of its chic sensibilities, the home at its core revolves around family life, which McBrearty found clever ways to accommodate through textiles. Vinyl chairs in the dining room provide easy cleanup, and a quilted runner crafted from an outdoor fabric acts as a stylish but sensible overlay for the family room sofa. “With kids, sometimes you have to get creative and come up with beautiful ways to conceal real life,” she says. So while you’re likely to find Legos stacked high on the dining room table or the remnants of an impromptu tea party taken place in the library, the McBreartys’ home is about as picture-perfect a family place as one could imagine. See Resources, Back of Book.

left In a vestibule just outside the master bedroom, a grasscloth by Schumacher offers a preview of the latter’s color scheme. The abstract painting is by Graham Harmon (through R. Vivian and John Bencich’s personal home is not unlike their commercial work—comfortable, restrained and filled with plentiful markers of their personal taste 93

WHILE IT MAY NOT RESIDE IN THE BUSIEST SEGMENT OF THE CITY that they’ve been instrumental in reinvigorating, the charming Druid Hills neighborhood that Atlanta architect John Bencich and his wife, interior designer Vivian, call home is within walking distance of school, soccer practice and walking trails for their 17-yearold daughter, Lilly. Designed by local architect Clement J. Ford in 1939, the white-brick bungalow they purchased in 2008 is an Atlanta classic, featuring thoughtful and precise architectural details—such as graceful archways and built-in bookcases—throughout. “Our [Inman Park] office was once a Clorox storage facility,” says Vivian, who cofounded architecture and design firm Square Feet Studio (SFS) with her husband in 2001. Known for repurposing older buildings—such as brick warehouses—for modern offices, restaurants, retail and multifamily residential, SFS is skilled at mining the unique needs of clients, distilling down to their most appropriate expressions, and creating iconic community destinations that develop organically, rather than adhering to any prescribed style or aesthetic. “We don’t design for abstract reasons; we design for real needs. And the needs of our own house were very particular,” says John, who, during his first visit to what would become their third Atlanta home, immediately intuited its potential via a napkin sketch

Clean Cut In their kitchen, the couple utilized surplus white oak (lime-washed by frequent collaborator and furniture craftsman Skylar Morgan) for custom cabinetry. Spindle-style stools from Bungalow Classic add a classic element to an island topped with the same local Cherokee marble that their firm, Square Feet Studio, used for countertops at West Egg Café and The General Muir.

that forecasted three major renovations and “half a dozen small tweaks” over the following decade. Situated on a “long, skinny lot” bordering the bucolic Druid Hills Golf Club, the bungalow is modest by modern measures, occupying less than a quarter of its 16,000-square-foot plot, so they happily focused efforts on its outdoor spaces. Floralis Garden Design owners Lucinda Bray and Tyne Martinez fashioned the clean, Zen-like landscape using mondo grass, American boxwood, hydrangeas, hollies, Edgeworthia, autumn ferns and more, creating a lush compound that’s elegantly layered—from the white picket fence and gingko tree at the front to the covered terrace, manicured gardens, swimming pool, open-air pool house and lounge area with fire pit at back near the welcome shade of oaks and pines. Both the fire pit cover and streamlined dining table were custom crafted by celebrated local furniture craftsman Skylar Morgan, with benches 97

built by up-and-comer Kendrick Anderson. French doors and a swing bed help blur the transition to the interiors, which the couple modernized by removing a cased opening between the living and family rooms, then updating the kitchen with white-oak cabinetry lime-washed by Morgan. Countertops are laid with the same Georgia-sourced marble SFS employed for West Egg Café and The General Muir, while the counter stool seats are covered in a favorite commercial-grade vinyl offering the look of leather. Patterns add an expressive sense of playfulness throughout (“I think I counted nine wallpapers total,” Vivian notes) and converge boldly in the foyer, where the most recent phase of renovation revamped the attic stair as near sculpture. “John worked to ensure all stair treads lined up with the boards,” says Vivian of the wall treatment they continued into the upstairs retreat, where a relaxed hangout space, office and guest suite round out the now-three-bedroom residence. From this sky-high perch, the family now has access to incredible views of the tree canopy—Chinese elms, crepe myrtles, cypress and more—that makes their home base a thrilling place to be. LIFE

END NOTE

ROMAN HOLIDAY

August’s influx of activities and obligations calls for a national holiday, says SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

108

ERICA GEORGE DINES

M

Y DOG DAYS OF SUMMER are passing as languidly as the Daytona 500. How did it get to be August? I’m still in February. I need a holiday. I used to mark the evolving seasons by changing my closets from fall and winter clothes to spring and summer items. Now that I live in sunny Los Angeles, however, chilly weather only requires tossing a sweater over the standard uniform of black T-shirts and leggings. Welcome to autumn: a 5-degree shift. August also used to be the last lazy month before school started after Labor Day—that was back in the day, before cell phones, the internet and social media. Now parents and children line up for the school bus or carpool before 7:30 a.m. When did August become so busy? As a result of overactive August, I’m proposing a national holiday. August is the only month that does not currently have one, and I think we need to round out the calendar. The month that means “marked by grandeur” and takes its name from a Roman emperor warrants a special day. I hereby propose the first Saturday in August as “Augustus Canis Dies,” or “August Dog Day.” Although Emperor Augustus was renowned for his administrative and organizational genius in guiding the Roman Empire, surely he took one day of rest during the year. On this day, we will take a break from chores, errands and obligations—and give ourselves permission to lounge on the hammock, float in the pool or nap in the shade. Some may not approve of a modern-day Roman holiday, but a designated day to relax this month would be welcome. a t l a n t a h o m e s m a g. c o m AU G . 2 0 1 8
