won’t miss a post!

ATLANTANS ARE FASCINATED WITH houses. Not just their own abodes, but also those of their neighbors, and possibly even a perfect stranger’s—particularly when there’s “lineage” involved. Residences designed by the likes of Philip Trammell Shutze or Neel Reid have become ingrained in the public consciousness; indeed, many of us assume collective ownership and a tremendous sense of responsibility for them. Case in point is the banner reading: “Sorry for the inconvenience. Neel Reid’s house will rise again,” which went up on Habersham Road just days after a fire destroyed the better part of a circa-1924 Neel Reid home in Buckhead. I certainly wasn’t the only one who breathed a sigh of relief as I drove past the rubble. Home tours and showhouses are one of the main ways style-savvy Atlantans feed their decorating fix, and this year’s Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens proved worthy of its grand, Italianate bones (it, too, was a Shutze, Reid and Hal Hentz masterpiece). One of the city’s most recognizable homes, Atlanta’s “Pink Palace” was treated to a dramatic makeover by more than 20 of the city’s leading industry talents. Our coverage starts on page 113, so even if you visited the estate during the showhouse, you can enjoy it twice—and Elizabeth Ralls Editor in Chief allow the intrigue to continue. @elizabeth_ralls | twitter

Michael Dines

KNOWN FOR HIS ATMOSPHERIC APPROACH AND LARGE-SCALE LANDSCAPES WITH PHOTOGRAPHIC-LIKE DETAILING, THE PAINTER THINKS BIG FROM HIS INMAN PARK STUDIO. WRITTEN BY

WHEN MICHAEL DINES decided he wanted his artist studio closer to home, he just built it—right in the backyard of his circa-1905 Queen Anne bungalow in Inman Park, where he lives with his wife, Erica, and two daughters, Eva and Grace. “Basically,” the painter says, “I created a space where I could paint the kind of paintings I want to paint.” Translation: It’s a place for big paintings—like 20-foot-long and 10-foot-high landscapes rendered in earthy colored acrylics. The size of a twocar garage, the studio has 15-foot vaulted ceilings and barn doors that swing open to let in the fresh air (and the smell of Confederate jasmine hanging over the doors). Pass by on a weeknight, and you might catch Dines in his paint-stained shorts and a t-shirt, with reading glasses clipped to the 14

collar, listening to Pandora and brushing away at his latest work. Dines, 51, is a Parkersburg, West Virginia native. After graduating from Fairmont State, where he played basketball, he moved to Atlanta in the mid-’80s and made a name for himself in the ’90s gallery scene with sizeable, moody landscapes punctuated with small blocks of resin. Trees featured heavily in his work, and still do. But, Dines says, “It’s not important to see the trees. I want the viewer of the painting to see and feel moisture in the air, or the absence of light.” In the ’90s, Dines’s gallery work was so in demand that show after show sold out. Drained by the sheer volume of work he produced during those years, Dines opted to take a hiatus that stretched for seven years. During that time, he worked with

George Dines

Erica, a well-known interiors photographer, to help build her business. He also met interior designers and collectors along the way, who often asked, “When are you going to start painting again?” These days, Dines works directly with those designers and collectors. His paintings range from small- to medium-sized still-lifes that vibrate with incandescence to oversize race horses and sailboats (“Because that’s where I would rather be,” he says), to those darkly pastoral landscapes (minus the resin blocks) that have become wildly popular. In his studio, he’s constantly experimenting. “I love when there are accidents in the art,” he says. “I don’t know if it’s intentional accidents, or accidental intention, but it’s the act of letting go.”

AT YOUR SERVICE: AUSTIN

Texas Swank

Tufted banquettes, dramatic draperies, a cut-

glass chandelier and mohair barstools aren’t exactly common decorative elements in Austin, Texas, eateries, but the city’s hottest grand gesture, known as LaV—crafted by DAVID BAKER of McAlpine Tankersley Architecture and SUSAN FERRIER of McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors—has struck a chord in a town known for its laidback look. Built from the ground up and inspired by a 1920s warehouse, LaV’s industrial facade and steel window banks are the perfect counterpoint to more refined details like a pewter-topped bar, and oversize landscape paintings by Atlanta artist Michael Dines.

Chip Cheatham of CHIP & COMPANY takes one of his favorite

materials beyond the beach with a dramatic collection of elaborately layered shell mirrors and lamps available at MARTIN NASH. A collaboration with Stephen Wood, the pieces are a study in natural contrasts, like the handcrafted mirror with saddle oyster and purple mussel shells, pictured. “I love the organic play of light that comes through in the shells, which are lacelike in fluidity,” Cheatham says. martinnash.com

FLORAL FANTASIA A design house best known for its traditional handpainted wallpapers, DE GOURNAY takes a slight departure with its newest collection by adding updated flair. Case in point is the oversized Lilium, pictured, which employs an exquisitely rendered floral motif (tumbling flowers) the brand is synonymous with, but in a more contemporary manner—as seen in Campion Platt’s bedroom design for Holiday House Hamptons. De Gournay is available at Ainsworth-Noah. ainsworth-noah.com

MATTHEW STUDIOS founder and designer Katherine O’Brien, a New York-based lighting

designer who regularly collaborates with Jamie Drake and Nate Berkus, recently launched her own line of crystal, lighting and home accessories she says are “inspired by the natural architecture and geometry of crystal.” The small Thea knob, pictured, is crystal carved to fit a geometric hexagonal polished metal base hardware, and prices range from $130 to $175; the large is $390. Available locally at

“After collecting chairs I’ve fallen in love with over the years,

it made sense to reproduce my favorites in fresh painted finishes,” says Mary Holland, who introduced a collection of chairs in varying shades of cream and frets at HOLLAND & CO. and MACRAE. It also gave her the chance to contrast the finishes with upholstered seats in bright Belgian linens, like orange, aubergine and citron green. Hit the Wall Creating custom colorways for a designed-in-theUSA wallpaper that comes prepasted and boasts a two-week turnaround might seem too good to be true, but DETROIT WALLPAPERS, available through MARTIN NASH, offers just that. The independent studio’s seven collections (which include the childfriendly line, Sprout) are the ideal solution for consumers looking beyond the mass market for a dash of customization or a boutique feel. Did we mention the wallpaper’s strippable, too? martinnash.com

Snake Charmer Slithering its way back into favor, the snake-print

trend is once again taking over the fashion and interior design worlds. For a striking—and edgy—take on the Parsons table, Michelle Bradley of BRADLEY wrapped this side table with snake-printed leather and added a brass drawer for an effect that’s as glamorous as it is tactile. bradley-usa.com

Pretty, Please

PAUL +, which recently welcomed two new lines, includ-

ing New York-based lighting and home accessory company Matthew Studios and Barcelona-based Kettal’s outdoor collection, to its spacious Atlanta Decorative Arts Center showroom, also boasts fresh offerings from Mattaliano, such as the cast-glass Conique chandelier, Rockefeller chair with goldleaf frame and Frank walnut-and-vellum four-door cabinet—as well as the Keith Fritz Victory dining table.

Ones to Watch

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles was a proud media partner of the sold-out Rathbuns' Watch List event, presented by the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC), which paired up-and-coming chefs from across the South with an equally stellar group of soon-to-be design superstars from the Atlanta design community. Held inside an empty, all-white showroom at ADAC, the event featured more than 10 high-style room vignettes designed for each visiting chef, and was hosted by culinary giants (and brothers) Kevin and Kent Rathbun, who were gracious, affable hosts. AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham The great Diana Vreeland once said of style: “It helps you get up in the morning.” I wholeheartedly agree. I possess far more enthusiasm and optimism for the day if I’m clad in a well-cut pant suit or a lady-like sheath than I do if I’m donning, say, a tracksuit. But Vreeland went on to say that, “Without it [style], you’re nobody.” Ouch. I think that’s taking it a bit too far, don’t you? Of course, style means different things to different people. To some, style is a pair of custom ‘BB’ pumps by Manolo Blahnik, while to others it’s a pair of comfy Belgian loafers. No matter how you define “style,” you shouldn’t confuse it with its cousin, “trendy.” Having true style does not mean following trends, but rather having the temerity to express your unique point of view—even if it’s not what’s hot at the moment. Maybe that means decorating your dining room with your favorite wallpaper at a time when wallpaper isn’t cool, or bedding down with printed sheets despite being told that chic people only sleep on white sheets. Style is not being different for the sake of being different, but having the confidence to live as you wish to live. And on that note, I’ll leave you with a list of what I find to be stylish. My notions of style may not be to your taste, and that’s exactly as it should be. Style means having the freedom to define it anyway you wish.

Scoop Westside Atlanta recently welcomed BARTACO, an upscale Mexican-style street-food concept from the team behind Barcelona Wine Bar. Menu highlights include fish tacos, wild boar rice bowls and pork tamales, while the beverage program features a range of classic Mexican libations. Also, don’t miss the rotating billboard sitting atop the restaurant that features work by local artists. (404) 607-8226;

WOODFIRE GRILL’S NEW HEAD CHEF STEPS UP TO THE PLATE WITH GREAT APLOMB WRITTEN BY Sejal Bhima

Hugh Acheson’s latest culinary venture, THE FLORENCE, opened its doors in Savannah this summer. Occupying a restored historic ice factory, the two-story restaurant is churning out Italian cuisine with Southern ingredients (think balsamic glazed pork ribs with dandelion greens and panna cotta with blackberry amarena). The space also features a café serving coffee

and pastries beginning at 7 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends.

WOODFIRE GRILL BY DAVID CHRISTENSEN; THE FLORENCE BY EMILY B. HALL

FOLLOWING THE RECENT DEPARTURE of Woodfire Grill executive chef Tyler Williams, former sous chef Matthew Weinstein is stepping into the spotlight at this Atlanta stalwart as the restaurant’s new top toque. It’s a well-deserved move for the Virginia native who’s been honing his culinary skills since age 16, working in kitchens from New York to Washington, D.C. and eventually Atlanta, where he relocated in 2013 after being personally recruited by Williams.

“I was really influenced by Tyler’s style of plating,” says Weinstein. “We’ll be cooking up the same dish on a particular night a dozen times, but we’ll plate it differently each time. It keeps you having fun and interacting with the food, something I think that guests can sense and appreciate,” he explains. And while patrons may anticipate the same seasonally driven, ingredient-focused cuisine that Woodfire Grill has become synonymous with, they can also expect a breadth of scrumptious wood-oven fish dishes, a specialty of Weinstein’s. “I love cooking fish because its delicate nature makes it a challenge and affords you the opportunity to be creative,” he says. This month, look for his bagel-and-lox inspired Alaskan king salmon with a red onion puree, pea-and-mint cream cheese, bagel crumbs and watermelon radish— thoughtfully plated, of course.

LETTER FROM SERENBE FOUNDERS steve & marie nygren

If you want to change the world, start in your own backyard. We discovered the property now known as Serenbe on a weekend outing to introduce our children to the Georgia countryside in 1991. Over the course of the next three years we found that our time on the weekends and time together as family, brought us peace and serenity. So in 1994 we moved to the farm full time and stepped off the insatiable treadmill of life. In 2000 we realized the need to protect the woods and lands that had become our home. That journey has led us to become placemakers, where we are rediscovering what it means to build community and create place, to think about life as a piece of art where we can bring beauty to the small moments in life. It has always been extremely important to our family to celebrate the arts. From the lampposts in the Selborne neighborhood to the site-specific theater of Serenbe Playhouse, our goal is to integrate the arts into every aspect of life here. We are excited to invite you to visit the 2014 Serenbe Designer Showhouse, and stay for a meal, a weekend or call it home for a lifetime.

LETTER FROM ARTIST IN RESIDENCE + ART FARM CHAIR janice barton The non-profit Serenbe Artist in Residence (AIR) is dedicated to sustaining nature, passion, community and creativity. To accomplish this, we provide artists of the highest caliber uninterrupted time and a welcoming community in which to create. Visiting artists of unique talent and creativity, both visual and performing, share their passion through performance and dialogue and help us continue to create a sense of place enhanced by art and artists. AIR fosters and supports accomplished artists from around the world, and in 2015 we will begin housing those artists at the Art Farm at Serenbe. AIR is excited to partner with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and Serenbe with the goal to expand the Art Farm as a place for artists to live, work and convene. The Art Farm complex deepens Serenbe’s values—nature, passion, art and community—and will be here for us, our families, our neighbors and our friends in the years to come. Thank you for your support of this vision by visiting the 2014 Serenbe Designer Showhouse.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY

THE ART FARM AT SERENBE Serenbe was designed with the arts in mind, including the Art Farm, a 40-acre complex that will serve as the central place for artists, the arts and culture at Serenbe. This complex is deeply rooted in process, education and creating multiple platforms for creativity. Artists, practitioners, and researchers will come here to deepen their practice and broaden their creative connections. Currently The Serenbe Institute is limited in the number of artists it can bring to Serenbe each year. The aspiration is to convene and house multiple artists at a time, and the Art Farm is a response to this need and creates an essential physical place for the arts at Serenbe. The Art Farm is collaborating with Rural Studio to construct the first wave of live-work artist cottages. Rural Studio is an off-campus designbuild program of Auburn University, established in 1993 by D.K. Ruth and Samuel Mockbee to give architecture students a hands-on educational experience. The artist cottages will be based on Rural Studio’s 20K House project that began in 2005 as a research project to address the need for affordable housing, provide an alternative to the mobile home and accommodate potential homeowners who are unable to qualify for commercial credit. The objective of the Art Farm Rural Studio collaboration is to design and build a model house that could be reproduced on a large scale by a contractor. The proceeds from the 2014 Serenbe Designer Showhouse will directly benefit this important initiative at the Art Farm. *Learn more about Rural Studio at ruralstudio.org

GENTLEMAN’S OFFICE & HALL // JULIE WITZEL

GUEST RETREAT & BATH // KAREN FERGUSON

“We chose a natural palette to honor the Serenbe philosophy that people can live more fully when connected to nature. By painting the window a dark color, the viewer’s eye is led to the lush trees outside, creating a visual extension of the space into the outdoors. The grasscloth wallcovering evokes the bark and other earthly elements surrounding the home. The use of sumptuous linens and refined furnishings creates a luxurious retreat for guests.” Karen Ferguson established Harrison Design Associates’ interior design studio in 2000, becoming the firm’s youngest and first female design director. Ferguson has built an impressive body of national and international projects, won numerous industry awards and garnered frequent media coverage. With her appreciation for the beauty of classical architecture and her fresh perspective on traditional design, clients seek her guidance on every aspect of their interiors, from space planning to selecting and creating custom finishes, furnishings and accessories. In 2011 Niki was named one of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles “Top 10 Under 40” and one of ADAC’s “Rising Stars.” With an aesthetic best described as “classic with a contemporary twist,” Niki’s spaces are characterized by a strong emphasis on architecture, use of neutral palettes with punches of color, and sculptural furnishings. Peace and Serenity By LAUREN LIPPEATT

IN COSTA RICA, THERE IS A SAYING that represents the country’s way of life and culture: ¡Pura Vida!—“The Pure Life!” It means to live a life of authenticity and truth, to leave as little of an impact on our planet as possible, to live without worry, to go with the flow and to enjoy the moment. The Sanctuary at Two Rivers yoga retreat on the Nicoya Peninsula embraces that mantra with warmth, ease, love and grace. Years ago, cocreator Jeff Gossett had a vision of a completely self-sustaining, ecologically 8

friendly, environmentally healthy refuge for guests to visit, recharge and connect to nature. The Sanctuary’s name describes it perfectly. It is a place of peace and serenity where time seems to stand still and the word “worry” loses all meaning. In the solitude, tranquility and remoteness of Costa Rica sits a small village of guest houses, a pool house, yoga space and kitchen—all solarpowered and connected with paths of stone through a tropical landscape. The communal covered outdoor eating

space is a gathering post for all guests to dine and share stories and is merely steps away from one of three waterfalls located within walking distance of the property. Every meal is announced by the blowing of a conch shell—a lovely, low-pitched noise that can be heard from within any of the open-air, screened-in guest rooms on the 40acre property. All meals are vegetarian (with a vegan option) and incorporate the ancient science of Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic

culture of India. The chef prepares every meal fresh from the best quality ingredients found on the island and around the world. Mornings include the rich, dark coffee Costa Rica has become known for, as well as a healthful breakfast. In the Ayurvedic tradition, lunch is the largest meal of the day because that is when energy and digestion are strongest. The Sanctuary is a retreat center specifically built for yoga. Various yoga teachers throughout the world lead one-week retreats or four- or five-week yoga teacher trainings. During my stay, I enjoyed the yoga and adventures of Alchemy Tours, lead by yoga teacher Silvia Mordini and her partner in love and business, Jacob Young. They are a jet-setting (and adorable) couple who travel all over the world leading

groups of 10 to 30 people through week-long yoga retreats focusing on personal empowerment, goal-setting, rejuvenation, self-reflection, adventure and relaxation. With Alchemy Tours, my group enjoyed two yoga practices a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, in the open-air pagoda. This breezy, welcoming space backs up to the jungle, where the calls of tropical birds and monkeys and the soft splashing of distant waterfalls accompany you during your practice. I easily could have spent the entire week-long retreat relaxing at The Sanctuary—practicing yoga, lounging by the pool, snoozing in hammocks, taking advantage of the spa services, but I enjoyed a day hike to three impressive waterfalls and a surfing

adventure. I felt the wind in my hair and experienced stunning views of the peninsula while boating to a snorkeling spot near Tortuga Island, with whale and dolphin sightings along the way. The week was the perfect balance of relaxation, exercise and adventuring. At the end of the retreat it was difficult to leave the family atmosphere created by owner Jeff, manager Liz Lindh, the staff at The Sanctuary and the four resident dogs. The entire team treated everyone not as guests, but as family members who had finally come home. Silvia and Jacob of Alchemy Tours were the quintessential hosts for a week in a jungle paradise. Autumn Family Fun: Sandestin Retreat to the Florida Panhandle for an easygoing family getaway By ALISON LEWIS

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR THE IDEAL place to make fall memories, look no farther than Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Located on the Florida Panhandle and just a five-hour drive from Atlanta, you’ll find the best spots for quality time and so much more. Here’s a list of our top 10 favorite family things to do. 1. BEACH. Head to one of the most gorgeous strips of beach in the world, and enjoy 7 miles of pure white sand. Build a sandcastle, roast s’mores over a bonfire or just swim or kayak in the Gulf of Mexico. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a parasailing trip high above the blue-green waters. 2. BIKE. Explore Sandestin’s amazing property on bicycles. The bike shop is open daily and is located in Baytowne Marina. Breeze past incredible sights, such as golf courses, sparkling

swimming pools, tennis courts, lakes and more. 3. EXPLORE JOLEE ISLAND. Plan a picnic or walk around this 5-acre nature park lush with Florida pines. It’s located near Baytowne Wharf. 4. FISH. Grab a rod from the marina or bring your own, and cast a line at any of the 72 stocked catch-and-release ponds right on the Sandestin property. 5. PADDLEBOARD. Rent YOLO Boards (stand-up paddleboards) at Baytowne Marina. It’s easy to master this activity and a total blast for the entire family. If you have little ones too small for their own boards, they can ride on the front of yours. 6. GOLF. There are four championship courses here, so golf lovers can choose where to spend a day or even just an afternoon at a practice range. The views are worth the cart ride alone.

7. TENNIS. Sandestin is the ideal place to work on your family tennis game. Enthusiasts can choose from 15 hard HydroGrid clay courts. See schedules for daily clinics. 8. BAYTOWNE. The Baytowne Adventure Zone is a must for kids who want to try an amazing zip line, ropes course, tower climb or Eurobungy. If you want a break from the heat, head indoors to The Blast Arcade and Laser Maze for clean, air-conditioned family fun. 9. MINI GOLF. Take a swing at the Dunes Putting Course for a one-of-akind mini-golf experience. The 18-hole course is challenging fun for the entire crew. 10. HUNT CRABS. Grab your flashlight, net and a bucket, and head to the beach to search for crabs. You may just see some fireworks while you’re there. (866) 912.3224; sandestin.com

WELLNESS

Super Foods for Your Skin Spas are incorporating ingredients from the pantry into their skincare treatments, and you can do the same at home by K AREN ASP

DON’T BE SURPRISED if during your next spa treatment your therapist takes a minute to mash up food—say, an avocado—before slathering it on your face. Skincare so real you could literally eat it? You bet. Of course, women have been using food on their skin for thousands of years. Yet that interest has recently escalated, perhaps driven by women’s desires to be more natural. “Today, women are becoming as concerned about what they put on their skin as they are about what they eat,” says Joanna Vargas, celebrity facialist in New York City and founder of Joanna Vargas Salon and Skincare Collection. As a result, spas around the country have risen to the demands, incorporating real food in their treatments. For instance, at the Spa at Sea Island in Saint Simons, Georgia, the coconut rose body polish incorporates a handmade scrub made with ground coconut, coconut oil, rose

petals, sugar and almond oil. But can foods really benefit the skin? In a nutshell, yes. “Although food products for the skin aren’t regulated like skincare products, which have to back claims with scientific studies, some foods such as green tea, berries and mushroom extract have been thoroughly researched and proven to have skin benefits,” says Jessica Wu, M.D., dermatologist in Los Angeles and author of Feed Your Face. SO WHAT FOODS MIGHT BENEFIT YOUR SKIN? Here are seven to stock your pantry with: AVOCADO: The fatty acids in this fruit restore your skin’s lipid layer, helping you stay hydrated. GROUND ALMONDS: They exfoliate the skin without irritating it. “Almond oil is also a source of fatty acids and an antiinflammatory,” Vargas says. HONEY: Honey not only has antibacterial properties, but it also can speed

healing of wounds and burns and hydrate skin. The one caveat? “Make sure you’re using medicinal honey, which has been sterilized,” Wu says. OATMEAL: “Proteins called saponins in the oats help dissolve oil and loosen dirt and makeup from your pores, which can help prevent breakouts,” Wu says. PUMPKIN AND YAMS: Both are loaded with antioxidants that protect the skin against sun damage and preserve elasticity. “Their enzymes also make these veggies great exfoliators,” Vargas says. SOY MILK: This anti-inflammatory helps reduce swelling (which is why Wu recommends it for puffy eyes) and hydrates the skin to make crow’s-feet appear softer. YOGURT: “The naturally occurring lactic acid acts as a mild alpha hydroxy acid, loosening dead skin cells and making skin look and feel smoother,” Wu says.

CULINARY

Wonderful Wyoming Mountain beauty meets modern style By CAROLYN O’NEIL

A VISIT TO JACKSON HOLE PROMISES moose sightings, mountain vistas, world-class skiing, fabulous fly-fishing and cowboy boots year-round. Add herds of grazing elk, galleries popping with contemporary Western art, river rafting adventures and interesting local cuisine, and you have the makings of a wonderful time in Wyoming. Jackson Hole’s menus feature a variety of local fare, including craft beers, cheeses, wild huckleberries and game. “Buffalo and elk have a huge draw on our menu,” says executive chef Kevin Humphreys, of Spur Restaurant & Bar at the Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa in Teton Village. He says, “Buffalo 12

is similar to grass-fed beef. It’s a lean meat and has a dry-aged beef flavor.” Popular dishes on the menu at Spur include buffalo sliders and fries covered in elk gravy, a play on the Canadian dish called poutine. “There’s an emerging dining scene here, and the majority of restaurants use local ingredients as much as possible,” says Humphreys. At Hayden’s Post in the Snow King Hotel, the region’s products proudly star on the menu, such as a Wyoming Whiskey Manhattan and a Wyoming Angus Beef Burger served on buns made by artisan bakers at 460 Bread. There’s even a restaurant called

Local. There, you’ll find coffee-rubbed elk medallions with a huckleberry demi-glace. During the summer months, when visitors come to hike, bike, raft and flyfish, there’s plenty of trout and locally grown vegetables on the menu. If you’re not game for game, the Jackson dining scene is diverse. Bin22 is a wine and tapas bar with charcuterie platters and creative salads. The menu at Il Villagio Osteria features Mediterranean fare for mountain appetites, including house-made fennel sausage for pizzas and pastas and dark chocolate “salami” for dessert.

MY

FIRST TRIP TO SICILY and my first villa experience were one in the same. After spending a few nights at Rocca delle Tre Contrade, I arrived at this conclusion: There’s simply no better way to enjoy Sicily. Complete with 11 bedrooms and space for 22 guests, you’ll also find incredible views and a staff going to extra lengths to provide the supreme comforts of home. Rocca delle Tre Contrade is just an ideal spot to visit with family and friends as it is for an intimate destination wedding. The 360-degree panoramic views take your eyes to the sparkling Ionian Sea on one side and the lava peaks of Mount Etna on the other. The inviting scent of lemons and other citrus permeates the air each time you step outside; lemon groves, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens enhance the estate. Relax by a private infinity pool, and enjoy the most delicious food you have ever tasted.

ACCOMMODATIONS Breathtaking views are standard in each of the spacious bedrooms spread across three floors. Furnishings are an elegant blend of antique, reclaimed and original pieces, which hint at the villa’s mid-19th-century origins. A calming color palette and tasteful art are found throughout the estate and complement stylish but comfortable armchairs, sofas and king- and queen-size beds. Baths are designed for guests who love top-modern fittings, local marble and largestone basins, tubs and showers. The property was recently restored by local architect Angelo Vecchio, who retained the original masonry of lava stone and white Siracusa limestone, which can be seen in the magnificent arches throughout the five living areas. Vecchio departed from traditional building techniques only for the new kitchen and dining areas, which incorporate polished concrete floors and glass walls.

WHAT TO SEE 1. MOUNT ETNA The tallest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna is the dominating feature of the eastern part of Sicily. When Etna erupts, travelers from all over the world come for a glimpse. Hike with a guide to gain expert knowledge. A cable car can take the sweat out of the trip up, but the descent past Valle Del Bove with its deep canyon of spent lava flows is mesmerizing. Take the villa’s 4x4 excursion in a Land Rover. You’ll veer off the beaten track to see fascinating aspects of this volcano that an ordinary tourist won’t. A volcanologist will accompany you for insight into one of Europe’s most fascinating treasures. parcoetna.it

quality wines, founded in 1990 by the Planeta family, this winery put Sicily on the modern wine map. destinations in Sicily, where you’ll find beautiful buildings, breathtaking views, amazing shopping and bars and restaurants galore. Have lunch by the sea at Mazzaro Taormina, which has a cable car to take visitors to and from the seaside resort. The main attraction is the Teatro Greco Theater, which began hosting performances in the 3rd century. It’s worth the walk thanks to spectacular views of Sicily.

3. THE CITY OF CATANIA Sicily’s second largest city, Catania is a delightful square where Mount Etna is ever present. Several volcanic eruptions have destroyed Catania, the most devastating occurring in the 17th century. The old part of the town was rebuilt in Baroque style, with large open squares and avenues. Have lunch at Pizza Duomo for the best salads, pizzas, appetizers and desserts. 4. VENDICARI NATURE RESERVE Situated on the southernmost

part of Sicily’s east coast, Vendicari is a mixture of sandy dunes, beaches and coastlines. You may see flamingos in addition to all kinds of migrating birds. The reserve is an ideal place for walking, running, swimming and sunbathing. 5. NOTO Destroyed in 1963 by an earthquake, this lovely

town was rebuilt from scratch. The buildings are Baroquestyle, but each hosts its own design. The predominant material used is local compacted limestone, which absorbs the sun’s rays and transforms the buildings with a soft honey glow. The sunset is unreal here, so don’t miss it.

8. THE MADONIE ADVENTURE PARK If you’re staying in or near the Madonie National Park, head for Il Parco Avventura Madonie, where you’ll find an adventure playground in the woods, including rope ladder-walking, tree-climbing and cable slides. It is also possible to go mountain biking (bikes and helmets provided), trekking and horseback riding. There are picnic areas and, if you phone ahead, you can request local products such as cheeses, hams, sausages, etc. 9. GOLF Il Picciolo in Castiglione di Sicilia is the oldest course

in Sicily and has played host to a number of international tournaments, including Ladies European Tour events. Very few courses in the world boast a smoking volcano as a backdrop—but Il Picciolo is one, laid out as it is in a stunning location on the slopes of Mount Etna. This proximity to Etna and its regular eruptions provides the unusual hazard of lava flows on many of the holes, and with trees and vineyards also constantly in play, there is a premium on accurate driving. ilpicciologolf.com

6. SYRACUSA A must during your Sicily travels, Syracusa

features fabulous restaurants and trattorias. Stop at the Piazzo del Duomo, a wonderful pedestrian square home to the cathedral built on the site of an ancient temple of Athena. You’ll also find a morning street market with an excellent assortment of wines and Sicilian delicacies. The archaeological site is home to a Greek theater that dates back to the 5th century.

Don’t Miss: 8 OnSite Indulgences L’APOTHECARY BLENDING STATION This blending station might have been the most fun parts of my trip thanks to the opportunity to blend my own organic herbal bath salts and scrubs with Lotus Wei products and L’Auberge’s signature essence and aromatherapy. Lotus Wei handcollects exotic flower essences worldwide and infuses them into transformative elixirs, mists, skin serums and natural perfumes. Flower essences are bio-energetic infusions of flowers that work with the body’s acupuncture meridians to enhance clarity, peace and happiness. Design your bath salt,

YOU ARE IN NEED OF A REJUVENATING GETAWAY to refresh your mind and body, put L’Auberge de Sedona on your list. I was completely exhausted when I arrived, coming off major deadlines, an 80-hour workweek and single-mom duties. I arrived at my creek-side cottage next to Oak Creek in Sedona’s Red Rock Country, ready to relax to the core. The first night, I dined on my patio, enjoying Scottish salmon with golden and red beets amidst the sycamore trees and bright stars. During the next two nights, I slept a total of 23 hours in this peaceful place, an ideal spot for me to totally unwind. The spa at L’Auberge de Sedona is just the place to bring your body back into balance and a state of harmony. I enjoyed two of the resort’s newest spa treatments, the first of which was the Quiet Mind, inspired by the Quiet Mind flower blend from Lotus Wei. This treatment is designed for guests who are learning to turn off their minds to best experience the massage. The treatment begins with several relaxation techniques and includes the use of essences of germanium, bird of paradise and passion flower—all said to promote letting go and encouraging the dissolution of muscle tension. As the mind calms, a deeply relaxing massage takes over. The Feet in the Creek Treatment is perfect for those who want to reconnect with nature and themselves. I started by wading into the water, feeling the creek sand between my toes while I breathed in the Sedona air. After that, I was accompanied to a lounge chair beside the creek, where I soaked my feet in a tub of water and fresh rose petals while listening to the rushing water. Next, I received a head, neck and shoulder massage followed by a foot reflexology treatment with L’Auberge’s signature L’Apothecary flower essence serum (a blend of rose, rosemary and lemon blossoms). Said to help reduce stress and aid in overall sense of well-being, this reflexology treatment cured not only my back pain but my stress as well. (855) 905-5745; lauberge.com

body scrub or body oils while learning about the healing aspects of fragrant herbs and flowers. (I made a sugar scrub consisting of roses, lavender, rose hips, cardamom and cacao; it’s my favorite shower product.) Inspired by the spa’s natural surroundings, the concept was a way to connect guests with the creek, while also creating a way for them to take a piece of Sedona home.

FULL-MOON MEDITATION Head to the edge of the creek with a yoga instructor and a fl ashlight, where you’ll sit and meditate for 10 minutes. Then go inside, where you’ll make a list of the things that don’t serve you anymore and burn the piece of paper in the fi re. Lay in savasana (the “corpse pose” in yoga) while you listen to Native American fl ute sounds to clear the mind and soothe the soul.

RED ROCK HIKE Enjoy the outdoors in one of nature’s most spectacular settings to vortex sites including Bell Rock, Airport Loop and Cathedral Rock.

GM JOG Join the general manager for an early run through Sedona’s beautiful trails.

HEALING CHINESE TEA TASTING Savor rare Chinese teas and learn about their therapeutic benefits. You’ll leave energized.

EVENING STARGAZING Join a local astronomer as he leads you to the starry wonders of Sedona.

DUCK FEEDING Participate every morning beside the creek.

A SENSUAL ADVENTURE THROUGH

BARCELONA

Invigorate the five senses in this Spanish city by indulging in the finest gastronomy and relaxation the Mediterranean lifestyle has to offer By K AREN ASP

BARCELONA IS A CITY THAT AWAKENS YOUR SENSES. Strolling through this lively metropolis, you’ll hear street guitarists playing flamenco music, catch nose-tingling scents of Catalan dishes and take in vibrant shades of reds, yellows, greens and blues everywhere you look. Call it a wellness journey, if you will—one that will work its way into your soul.

SEE: Begin your journey by checking into the chic Hotel Arts Barcelona, one of only two hotels on the city’s almost five-kilometer beach. You’ll then have access to prime real estate from which to catch awe-inspiring sunrises over the Mediterranean. You can also easily meander to the beach to test your stamina with stand-up paddleboarding, play beach volleyball or run along the boardwalk behind the beach. (Just be prepared to skirt around the older men who gather by the dozens to play dominoes, munch on bread and cheese and sip vermouth.) If you’re looking for an intriguing visual experience, visit the Basílica de la Sagrada Família. This modern masterpiece by famed Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí was built in 1882 and is scheduled for completion in 2026. Continue to be dazzled by Gaudí at Park Güell, where you’ll find unique artwork, beautiful gardens and wonderful city views.

HEAR: Although you could spend hours listening to the crash of the waves on the beach, make your way to La Rambla, the famous pedestrian-only boulevard. Here, you’ll find street musicians (and buskers of every kind, including the famous human statues). Or visit the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, a hill that overlooks the city, which features a music and light show several nights a week. Montjuïc, by the way, is also home of sites from the 1992 Olympics as well as art galleries and museums.

TASTE AND SMELL:

For a true feast for the senses, step foot in La Boqueria, one of the world’s best and largest public markets. Of course, there are dozens of other markets where you can buy fresh fruit, cheeses, seafood or a snack for picnic lunches. In fact, I also enjoy popping into the Mercat de la Barceloneta, a quaint neighborhood within walking distance of Hotel Arts. While at La Boqueria indulge your tastebuds at small restaurants—Bar Pinotxo, a famous tapas bar, is always a crowd pleaser—or just nibble as you peruse, sampling everything from nuts to olive oils and chocolates. Get an even bigger chocolate fix by stopping at Mauri, a well-known pastry and chocolate shop in the city. My recommendation: A Catalan specialty called catànies, caramelized Marcona almonds surrounded by white chocolate (or a similar concoction) and dusted with cocoa. Cap off your Barcelona tasting tour with a glass of wine, cava or even a beer (Barcelona brews its own pilsner called Estrella Damm, which is quite tasty) at one of the city’s many tapas bars. Head to the charming Gothic Quarter, or stop by Monvínic, a hip wine bar, or Torre d’Alta Mar, a restaurant that stands 75 feet off the ground and offers 360-degree views of the city. You can also find an outstanding wine list and locally inspired tapas at Arola, Hotel Arts’s upscale restaurant where, if so inspired, your server will relay the fine art of “making” bread with tomato, a Catalan specialty. The process involves rubbing a piece of crusty bread with garlic and cut tomato, and topping it with a drizzle of olive oil and pinch of salt. One bite may just convince you that no matter how long your stay, it will never be enough to get your fill of this Mediterranean lifestyle. hotelartsbarcelona.com, barcelonaturisme.com 23

SAN JUAN

ONCE A TOURIST DESTINATION OF DEBATABLE RENOWN, THE HISTORICAL CITY OF SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, IS COMING BACK TO LIFE AS THE DARLING OF THE CARIBBEAN

SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL IS HAPPENING IN SAN JUAN. Among the glimmers of a growing prosperity is a new zeal for conservation—natural and cultural. Flourishing from this effort is San Juan’s emerging art and design scene which is attracting businesses, such as Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Aaron Stewart Home, as well as a cooler, more cultured class of traveler. It is an exciting time to visit San Juan and witness the town, formerly known for crumbling buildings and lawbreakers, morphing into a clean, bustling cultural center full of music, laughter and infectious pride. The newest source of pride lives in a formerly rundown area of San Juan’s Santurce neighborhood called Tras Talleres where an emerging culture is rooted in an unlikely art form—graffiti. This isn’t subway-style street art. On the contrary, these massive murals are commissioned (it’s an honor reserved exclusively for Puerto Rico’s most notable artists), and are considered a clever way to bedeck abandoned buildings and also vital ones. Even amateurs get in on the celebration—there is an annual festival where the paint cans come out, the bars open and the neighborhood literally “goes to town” on its mission. This revitalization is evidenced throughout San Juan, and we can’t think of a better reason to plan a visit. It’s really quite magical. EXPLORE THE NEW ARTSY VIBE RIGHT FROM YOUR HOTEL For a rich, experience-filled family vacation convenient to all points of interest, including this exciting new art scene, the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris

Casino on Avenida Ashford in the Condado neighborhood is the perfect home base. It is here that the inspiration to explore more of San Juan’s artsy soul takes root. The lobby of the hotel itself showcases magnificent works by several local artists along with beachy details, such as a massive, carved “Coral Reef” wood sculpture that welcomes guests at the hotel entrance. Now that you’ve caught a bit of the cultural fever, here’s good news: From now until December 31, 2014, visitors staying at the San Juan Marriott Resort have an opportunity to experience the latest art scene developments through a special, customized package called the “Artsy San Juan.” The package includes a threeto four-hour exploration tour of the history and emerging art scene of Santurce and Old San Juan along with four tickets to Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR). Laid out in several galleries on two floors, the MAPR showcases the colorful heritage of local art. The collection runs the gamut in terms of media and eras, but pay particular attention to the rich history of the country’s poster art, perhaps the harbinger of the current graffiti revolution. The package also includes a refreshing bonus: a 30-minute mixology class with a Red Coral Lounge bartender. Daily breakfast for two adults and two children is included along with city view accommodations. (To book, see “Planning Your Trip.”) The San Juan Marriott Resort itself is a luxurious, sprawling enclave of things to see and do. The recently renovated guest rooms are tastefully upscale, very bright and roomy

with lovely all-marble bathrooms. Many of the indoor public spaces have a subtly lit, swanky vibe. The lobby is the virtual heartbeat of the hotel, with its immensely high ceilings and comfortable seating clusters, a favorite spot for intimate gatherings during the day or evening cocktails before dinner. At night, the Red Coral Lounge in the lobby transforms into the most energetic bar in Condado, with dancing and live entertainment. In the morning, guests can grab a pastry or sandwich along with a cup of highly regarded Puerto Rican coffee in the lobby pop-up shop called Coffee Merchant. Just off the lobby is the bustling casino where, as a surprising and homespun gesture, waiters pass around complimentary cups of steaming chicken soup or small sandwiches to guests from 5-7 p.m. The hotel’s Ocean Club Spa offers all the amenities of a world-class facility where services can be enjoyed in either treatment rooms or poolside cabanas. The spa’s attendants are beyond courteous and accommodating. The Ocean Club Fitness Center caters to guests’ health and wellness, offering yoga, water aerobics, weights and personal trainers. Physical activities extend out to tennis courts, a two-level pool complex and 500 feet of private beach. The San Juan Marriott Resort can also arrange other excursions, all designed to help guests get deeper into the heart and soul of this island. Here are a few don’t-miss destinations located within a short distance from the hotel.

colorful streets and historic Spanish Colonial architecture. This barrio offers all the charm and authenticity of its heritage without feeling too touristy. As you walk along the streets, you’ll find a shopper’s paradise—from local cigars, Panama hats and hand-crafted souvenirs, to luxury shops such as Louis Vuitton and Coach—along with many cafés and restaurants that serve up classic Puerto Rican food and drink. Stop in the home of the very first piña colada at Barrachina restaurant, or go to restaurant El Jibarita for their signature sangria and a plate of bacalaitos (fried cod fish) or yuca frita (cassava fries). PLANNING YOUR VISIT For a city that is an ultra-popular Caribbean vacation playground, San Juan is, after all, American; therefore it is easy to get to from any major airport in the continental US. Once you get there, it’s extremely simple to maneuver without the need for a passport or other travel hassles. San Juan Marriott Resort rates for the “Artsy San Juan” package start at $349/night and a minimum two-night stay is required. (To reserve, call

1-800-228-9290 or visit www.marriottsanjuan.com and use promotional code: P91.)

CONDADO The San Juan Marriott Resort lives in San Juan’s ritziest neighborhood, Condado, which feels almost like another city entirely. It hugs the gorgeous stretch of beach, and the hotels and sophisticated bistros dotted along the tree-lined Avenida Ashford give the area the glittery feel of Miami Beach. Cartier, Ferragamo and Gucci are located here. Explore Candado (and most of San Juan’s neighborhoods) on foot in order to absorb the exuberant spirit of the locals. FORTS If you’re up for a little exercise with your history lesson, explore the ramparts and grounds at Castillo de San Cristobal, the largest fortification built by the Spanish in the New World. Built to protect against land-based attacks on San Juan, it covered 27 acres when it was finished in 1783. The rich and fascinating history of this massive compound is eloquently illustrated through exhibits and plaques throughout the fort. A short distance west from Cristobal castle is the 16thcentury Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Construction on the castle began in 1539 when Spain was in control of San Juan. It’s from here that the Spanish forces fended off various maritime attacks, and you can peek through windows where cannons once stood. The old lookout towers offer 180-degree views where the ocean meets the bay, and the massive lawn in front of the Castillo has become a favorite place for sun napping and kite flying. OLD SAN JUAN Situated between Castillo de San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe el Morro, the area of Old San Juan extends the cultural experience with its many galleries,

DINE LIKE A LOCAL While you are traipsing around Santurce, take a break from art-seeing to enjoy a real Puerto Rican lunch where lucky locals eat, La Casita Blanca. This restaurant in the Villa Palmeras neighborhood was born when an abuela (grandmother) began cooking at home for family, then friends. Her food was so good, more and more people came to eat until the logical next step was for her to open a lunchroom. Dishes are authentic to what you would find on the stove in any local home kitchen—chillo frito (fried baby snapper) or carne guisada (stewed beef). Most entrees come with the standard side mound of rice and beans or mofongo—a dense scoop of fried green plantains (or sometimes cassava) mashed together with broth, garlic, olive oil and pork cracklings or bits of bacon. Desserts are excellent, too, and the decor is—ahem— authentically unglamorous: The most notable fixture in the indoor dining room where we sat was a huge tree that grew through the floor and poked right out of the ceiling.

Stir It Up!

Discover joy in Jamaica, where the reggae beat syncs with the rhythm of the ocean’s waves.

By BOB COOPER

JOY. I SAW IT ON THE GRINNING FACES of uniformed Jamaican schoolchildren; I also saw it in their parents’ brightly painted homes, many striped in the yellow and green colors of the proudly flown flag. I heard it in the music that spilled out from every village church on Sunday mornings and nightly from every ramshackle bar. I tasted it in the tropical fruits and coffee beans picked in the hills, delivered daily to the street markets and resort restaurants of Ocho Rios and Port Antonio, the two (of six) coastal cities popular with visitors to Jamaica. Yes, Jamaica stirs the soul with its joy. Look no further than the musical creations of reggae king Bob Marley and the jubilant, post-race celebrations of sprint king Usain Bolt. For a nation smaller than Connecticut and less populous than Iowa, Jamaica has shared with the world more than its share of joyful performers. The intoxicating geologic brew of steep, tropical mountains and smooth, white-sand beaches is found in few places outside the Caribbean, yet, unlike other Caribbean islands, Jamaica is often overlooked by U.S. travelers. It’s worth a look, as it’s less crowded than the Bahamas, easier to get to than Cuba and kinder on the budget than most Caribbean countries.

Splash & Slide Most Jamaican resorts supply kayaks and snorkeling, while diving, windsurfing, kiteboarding and hopping aboard party catamarans also generate joy on the water. But the land activities are more full of surprises. Bobsledding and waterfall hiking in Ocho Rios, anyone? Made famous by the movie Cool Runnings, Jamaican bobsledding (on rails, not snow) is the main attraction at the Mystic Mountain Rainforest Adventures, where you and the kids can also plunge down a water slide or canopy zip line after riding up a chairlift. Nearby is the equally popular hike up Dunn’s River Falls on a natural staircase of shiny limestone boulders. Plan on holding hands with strangers to form human chains in the waist-deep water. That’s almost normal compared to equestrian swimming at Sandy Bay’s Chukka Horseback Ride n’ Swim. It starts with a tame trail ride through mango and guava trees but finishes at a gallop in saddle-deep water in Chukka Cove. It was hard to tell if my horse, Mancha, was swimming laps or prancing on tippy toes, but my guide assured me, “It’s fun for him.” For me, too. More fun awaited in the mile-high 29

Blue Mountains, where my group rode cruiser bikes for 10 downhill miles through a rainforest reserve and past rows of coffee plants to a waterfall. But my namesake Bob’s wisdom rang true: “Don’t worry/about a thing/’cause every little thing/gonna be all right.”

Lazy Luxury Coastal resorts are plentiful in Jamaica, but few boast the luxury of Jamaica Inn, arguably the best on the island. You needn’t stay in a cottage (each with a private spa tub, outdoor shower and ocean-view deck) to enjoy all that the resort has to offer. No matter what accommodations you choose, options include croquet on the lawn, morning yoga on the private beach, swimming in the private cove, or indulging in a moonlight couples massage. (Or, do as I did one morning: take the inn’s glass-bottom kayak out for a 90-minute roundtrip paddle to the British colonial heart of Ocho Rios). While the inn’s restaurant brings the outdoors in, with all tables open to the tropical flower-perfumed air, the rooms keep the outside world out, with no TVs, radios, desks or clocks to distract you from romance. (800) 837-4608; jamaicainn.com

Family Friendly Goblin Hill Villas is typical of Jamaican accommodations that welcome kids. The hillside spread near Port Antonio

offers duplex-type units with comfy living rooms, TVs and kitchens. There’s no restaurant, but a personal cook will shop and prepare breakfast, lunch or dinner by arrangement. While the kids are at Goblin’s playground, pool or PingPong tables, you can stroll the nature trail and gardens or relax on the Great Lawn’s Adirondack chairs, which face the turquoise ocean and San San Beach. After 5 p.m., you can drain Red Stripes at the resort’s Tree Bar, wedged into the branches of a 300-year-old ficus. (876) 925-8109; goblinhill.com

Jerk Joints These roadside establishments are not sports bars—they serve jerk chicken, which is as much a staple of local tastes as Blue Mountain coffee, Red Stripe beer and white rum. The chicken is marinated in allspice and other spices on a pimento wood fire to ensure its uniquely piquant taste. Wash it down with one of the aforementioned national beverages, and you’ll be an honorary Jamaican.

If You Go Come any time, because the average daily highs are in the eighties year-round. Once you arrive, plan to get around in minibuses and cabs, not a rental car, because driving in Jamaica will drive you nuts, and there’s that left-side-ofthe-road thing, too. But the island isn’t that big anyway, and most hotels have their own beaches (or there’s one nearby). English is spoken widely and American dollars—and Americans—are joyfully welcome everywhere. 31

The most recognizable doors in Atlanta—visible from Buckhead’s stately thoroughfare, West Paces Ferry Road—were treated to

a dramatic makeover at the deft design hands of interior designer Barbara Westbrook for the 2014 Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators Show House & Gardens. Opening into the airy Grand Salon, Westbrook played with scale and proportion to complement the room’s existing handpainted murals and grand Italianate architecture.

Grand Salon (left and previous pages) BARBARA WESTBROOK, WESTBROOK INTERIORS Westbrook was drawn to

this airy space for its original handpainted linen wallcovering. Taking her cue from its deep tones, she opted not touch the original moldings, mantel or over-mantel mirror. Instead, she mixed in antiques from Robuck & Co. with deep, modern Verellen sofas from Bungalow Classic. “The house is a grand example of Italianate architecture. Why fight it?” she asks. An overscaled coffee table by R. Hughes anchored the room, while maple trees and towering orchids added another layer. “Every piece is as rich as the wallcovering. It gives the room a depth that belongs in the 21st century.”

Morning Room JOHN OETGEN, OETGEN DESIGN INC.

“It was great to re-imagine this space,” offers Oetgen, who also designed the room for the 1979 Show House. Both years, Oetgen utilized the transitional space that connects two grand rooms for a small dining area. This year, he incorporated a playful bird theme with a mix of pieces from Parc Monceau, Robuck & Co. and Jerry Pair. “Returning to the house reassured me that there is or was a creative force in architecture,” he states. “Atlanta is full of gems from the past and this is one of those.” 116

Solarium ROBERT BROWN, ROBERT BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN “The Solarium has

such stunning architecture that it was important to showcase it,” says designer Robert Brown, who left five pairs of French doors open and un-covered to allow its bones to shine. To make the soaring space more intimate and livable, he painted the 16-foot ceilings and walls the same dark grey velvety tone and created two seating areas of furnishings from Townhouse by Robert Brown, Parc Monceau and MacRae.

Family Living Room TIMOTHY CORRIGAN, TIMOTHY CORRIGAN, INC. Because this space overlooked the

pool, Corrigan wanted to create a sea of blue that would bring the outdoors in. He accomplished this using a recently released collection he designed for Schumacher. “The entire room is bathed in a watercolordesigned fabric that was inspired by the French Mediterranean resort town of Cap Ferrat,” he says. Mirrored panels reflect the garden and pool outside, mimicking the French doors on the opposite wall of the long, narrow room. “Nothing makes a room feel more cozy and thoroughly elegant than draping an entire room,” Corrigan says.

Kitchen DESIGN GALLERIA KITCHEN AND BATH STUDIO

Principal Matthew Quinn envisioned the home’s new owners as empty-nesters with dogs and a passion for cooking and entertaining. Challenged with an asymmetric layout and an obstructive structural post, the Design Galleria team resolved these obstacles by partitioning off a pantry area to rebalance the room and by using the center post as an anchor for the cantilevered arm of a custom light ďŹ xture. The island is topped with leathered Cielo quartzite countertops from Marmi Natural Stone. A black-and-brass hood and range by LaCornue, customized Miele coffee bar and a dog feeding station bring a livable luxury to the space.

Teen Retreat TISH MILLS, HARMONIOUS LIVING WITH TISH MILLS This year’s showhouse space held

special meaning for Mills as her 16 -year-old daughter served as both the inspiration, and the lucky recipient of the European-infused design. The space was abloom with fabulous flourishes fit for a teen like Romo fabrics sourced through Travis & Company and an antique carved trunk nestled at the foot of the bed from Parc Monceau. “I love this idea of a girl having a hope chest,” Mills explains. “This room is actually a sweet 16 birthday present to my daughter,” she reveals. “This room will be her bit of Paris in Atlanta.”

and her team dared not touch the circa-1926 Venetian murals which were original to the home. “I let the murals play center stage,” she explains. “Having a soft design touch was more important than putting my ‘stamp’ on the place.” To brighten the room, she painted the chair rail to match the existing crown molding, added custom cream-colored dining chairs and a chandelier from Circa Lighting wrapped in an ethereal cloud of tulle. “I used bright and soft elements to bring a sense of airy lightness to the space,” Turner states.

“By converting the master bedroom into the master bath, we achieved a spa-like experience so that the homeowners might feel they are always on vacation while they are home,” offers Snider, who revamped the room with the help of Design Galleria’s talented team. After completing a gut renovation with the help of Design Galleria’s expert team, the sparkling new pool house featured black-and-white herringbone tiled floors, Habachy’s signature trellis-patterned mirrored walls, a new bar design, and was adorned with an antiqued glass-blown chandelier from Brooklyn-based design studio Apparatus. “It’s the first piece that I found for the room, and it set the stage for my whole whimsical theme,” Habachy says. 127

STAN TOPOL, STAN TOPOL & ASSOCIATES

“Our goal in its design was to create a refuge—a space where our guests would feel welcomed and special,” offers The Mercantile’s Barbara Heath. Health was inspired by Jim Thompson’s latest fabrics, and mixed textiles in shades of rich jade, soft aqua and seafoam. The effect was echoed the hues in a painting by Atlanta artist Melissa Payne Baker from Huff Harrington Art Gallery, which hung over the desk.

Topol decided to rethink the study as a more livable space. Since the room did not have bookshelves, or a room to include them, he says he re-conceived the space as an art room with modern media conveniences and comfortable furnishings from Century Furniture and Brunschwig & Fils fabrics and wallpaper. “I have found that most show houses don't show how people could really live,” Topol explains. “After all, comfort is the ultimate luxury.”

Inspired by Estee Lauder’s Palm Beach estate, vintage furnishings like stools covered in Scalamandré’s zebra fabric and a pie crust-shaped table from Baker added a whimsical touch to the retreat. The designers envisioned the homeowners enjoying their morning coffee or evening cocktails in the space. “It is great place to start and end each day,” Jackson suggests.

Master Bedroom TRACI RHOADS, TRACI RHOADS INTERIORS

“The late afternoon light that streamed in through the windows just before sunset inspired me to bring in the different colors of the sky offset by earth tones of the landscape,” explains Rhoads. An accent wall papered in Jim Thompson’s Ikat print offered a bright pop of color against neutral furnishings like an upholstered headboard from Stanton Home Furnishings and area rug by Keivan Woven Arts, while a chandelier by Allan Knight available through Paul Plus picked up the hue.

Master Sitting Room JIMMY STANTON, STANTON HOME FURNISHINGS Tasked with converting

the master bathroom into the master sitting room, Stanton replaced the tile with a herringbone wood floor and removed the tub, vanity and shower. “We had a lot to do in that little space,” he remembers. Stanton kept the coffered ceiling and appointed the comfortable quarters with furniture, art and accessories, all from Stanton Home Furnishings. “I imagined the occupants lighting a fire, opening the doors to the outdoor space and relaxing with a good book,” he says.

Grand Hall LAURA WALKER, VERDE HOME BY LAURA WALKER A four year stint in

Italy informed Laura Walker’s fascination with the marbleized papers so well known in Florence. Walker’s hand-tufted rug of wool and banana silk with a marbled effect—one of her original designs—is part of her Verde Home Grand collection and served as the main inspiration for the room. “It is exciting when you can design a room from the rug up,” she explains. “I would want the owner to stop and feel good in a room that they would pass through so many times each day.”

Upstairs Gallery MICHEL BOYD, SMITHBOYD INTERIORS

“My background is in fashion, and I believe that building rooms and choosing furnishings is as personal and specific as clothing,” explains Boyd. Pulling inspiration from the architecture of the home, he selected a rug from his SMITHBOYD collection at Verde Home and crafted a custom oval ottoman with brass turned legs to echo the arches above the doors in the upper hall. A chandelier from Circa Lighting and antique lamps from Parc Monceau provided the finishing touches. 133

Farmer took his cues from the Venetianinspired legacy of the home, but with a nod towards today’s comforts. Farmer selected ikat paper and linen check window treatments by Stroheim to draw upon the vibrant hues found in the Venetian paintings of the harbor and other coastal scenes. The intimate space also allowed him to employ classic elements in fresh ways, like the lantern light fixture from Circa Lighting or hammered pewter bath fixtures from J. Tribble of Atlanta. “Taking delights from the past for today’s enjoyment is always such a fun project,” he declares.

Breakfast Room MARIA MCLAURIN NUTT AND CLAY MCLAURIN, MCLAURIN INTERIORS Maria

McLaurin Nutt focused on the warmth and beauty of nature for this sunny space, which was also informed by the debut of nephew Clay McLaurin’s new textile patterns. They highlighted the “Weeping Willow” fabric by hanging a large framed watercolor by Clay, which represented the beginnings of this pattern. With very little usable wall space and lots of doorways, hanging the Ainsworth-Noah chandelier slightly off center in the narrow room allowed Nutt to accommodate a plush seating and dining area.

retreat bath and dressing area, Kirkland was inspired by the Roaring Twenties, “when everything was all about glamour,” he says. Imagining Hollywood starlets of a bygone era needing an escape to pamper and primp, Kirkland crafted a dressing area where the closet would be today. The dramatic space is punctuated with powerful pops of vibrant orchid and whimsical touches like the “Flower Head” series of photographic prints by Gibson-Spizman.

staircase, Taylor re-imagined the area as a family stairwell. Challenged by the small footprint of the landing, she utilized custom antiqued mirrors by Brooks & Black Fine Framing to add depth to the small space and removed a closet door to create a vignette where the lady of the house might make a quick call or attend to the business of running a busy home. Taylor completed the space’s eclectic yet luxe look with crystal finials, custom leather rail covers, chandeliers from Circa Lighting, Baroque ceiling medallions, Dupioni silk portieres and a flame-stitched stair runner.

Irwin Fine Art, Keivan Woven Arts, Edgar Reeves and Jay Scott Studios, Griffin created a modern gallery in this transitional space. Lee Jofa’s “Tara” fabric lent a sense of grandeur to the stairwell and reminded the designer of the infamous scene with Scarlett O’Hara’s drapery-fashioned dress. “A fresh approach on a traditional and timeless pattern naturally seemed fitting for my grand stairwell drapery treatment this year,” she declares.

Kathryn Stockett relaxes in the living room of her updated Brookwood Hills abode. The author relied upon architect D. It’s always a family affair at author Kathryn Stockett’s home. Stockett’s mother, Ruth, and daughter, Lila, enjoy the backyard, which includes a covered porch with seating and living areas for entertaining and a chicken coop. opposite Inspired by the leafy gold chandelier, Stockett and designer Caroline Normark created a posh look in the dining room with a moody color scheme and gilt accents.

E

EVERY HOME HAS A STORY TO TELL. Author Kathryn Stockett’s renovated bungalow in a leafy Brookwood Hills enclave conveys a narrative of family, friendship and a whole lot of soul. When it came time to reimagine her 1920s home, Stockett turned to close friends (and neighbors), designer Caroline Normark and architect D. Stanley Dixon, to transform the cramped structure into an airy abode. “I really wanted the home to be more livable. It was very chopped up and we had so many walls between us that our family never saw each other,” says Stockett. To create a more open floor plan, Dixon enlisted contractor Wright Marshall to reconfigure the house, including widening the once long and narrow family room by 8 feet. The larger space now opens up onto an expansive covered porch that acts as an extension of the family room—perfect for the regular neighborhood soirees Stockett’s known for hosting. Once the perfect proportions were in place, Stockett and Normark set out to fill the home with unique finds to pack in the personality. “She has an eclectic sense of style, so her one request was that the home not resemble a showroom,” recalls Normark. The duo scoured local vintage shops and Web sites such as Etsy, One Kings Lane and even eBay for rare and interesting pieces such as a

sculptural square coffee table in the family room or the colorful rug mounted on canvas that now acts as a work of art in the same space. “I love online shopping at night,” shares Stockett. “With a glass—or two—of wine in hand, I’ll stay up late browsing sites like One Kings Lane and a few days later, new packages will arrive on my doorstep. I don’t always look at dimensions, just color and form.” It’s here that Normark’s deft design skills came into play, often finding the perfect place for Stockett’s beloved treasures, as well as those of boyfriend and journalist Wyatt Williams, like his record player. A relic from Williams’s disc-jockey days, it holds special meaning for Stockett. “Having music—and a part of him—in the house is such a gift,” she says. Normark also helped up the style quotient in Stockett’s home by introducing a slew of bright colors and bold patterns. In the guest bedroom, for example, she repurposed a traditional sleigh bed with a luxe velvety orange slipcover, while a Cisco Brothers sofa in the family room was given new life with a whimsical blue Romo fabric. “She’s certainly not afraid to push the envelope,” says Normark. The heart of Stockett’s home though, lies not in its unique design, but in the lifestyle it fosters—for her family and the entire neighborhood. With essentially an open-door policy, one might 143

“We had so many walls between us that our family never saw each other,” says Stockett of the home’s original footprint. “A more open floor plan makes for a better family.”

find a large gathering of the neighborhood children around the kitchen table for a shared meal while adults sip cocktails in the spacious backyard. Daughter Lila’s chicken coop is also a popular draw. “Lila delivers fresh eggs every Monday to her clientele throughout the neighborhood,” says Stockett. “I hope this home is as fun a place for my daughter to grow up in as it has been for me to live in so far,” she adds. The bungalow’s quirky nature also acts as a muse of sorts for the writer. Currently penning her second novel, there’s no nook off limits. “I pace a lot,” Stockett says of her writing process. “So you can find me on the back porch, by the chickens, in a bedroom—practically everywhere! This home my personal sanctuary.” And most importantly, it’s a true reflection of the author. “The home’s modest exterior matches her private, quiet demeanor that’s reserved for the outside world,” says Normark, “but as soon as you step inside, it reveals her true personality—vibrant and full of life.” See Resources, Back of Book. A custom steel-framed, white oak-topped table by Stephen Balcom doubles as a cooking prep and dining space in the airy kitchen. Normark outfitted a kitchen nook with two chairs from Etsy, providing the perfect spot in which to curl up with a good book. Stockett says her favorite feature is the limestone floor from Walker Zanger; its herringbone pattern not only offers visual interest, but was “specifically chosen to disguise dirt.”

Jill Sharp Brinson & Rob Brinson JILL SHARP STYLE + ROB BRINSON PHOTOGRAPHY ESTEEMED STYLIST AND Ballard Designs creative director Jill Sharp Brinson began her life with undeniable vivacity, and basically never slowed down. A native of New Canaan, Connecticut, she lived in Tokyo before kicking off her career in California, but it wasn't until she moved to Atlanta that she met her husband of 14 years, High Point, North Carolina, native and acclaimed photograper Rob Brinson. The pair first met during a professional meeting, when Jill interviewed Rob to gauge the ins and outs of the Atlanta photo scene. “Years later, we married in the very loft where I first met him. It was wild,” she says. “We started working together but also maintained many separate accounts: him shooting, me styling and creative directing and working on private residential design work.” Clad in thousands of window panes, the 6,500-square-foot industrial space at King Plow Arts Center has become symbolic of Rob’s work in the fashion, lifestyle and interior realms. More recently, it’s housed Jill’s vast trove of worldly treasures, and served as the site of her elegant new series of pop-up shops, STABLE, which will be followed by an autumn Shibori workshop set to segue into a denim show and sale. Rob, meanwhile, is pooling local talent to assemble an extraordinary Atlanta film school concentrating on the production and directorial aspects of the industry. “I wanted to do it in a way it wasn’t being done anywhere else in the country,” he says, citing his commitment to buck the status quo. “Innovate or vacate,” he proclaims. Both powerful personalities with uncommonly confident instincts, the Brinsons do not often overlap work, but they do use each other as sound boards quite frequently. With neither prone to vacillating, inflexibility can sneak its way in, but by relying on honesty, the duo always seems to circle back to the same page. That much is evident in the currently-under-wraps house (called “Peace Mill”) they recently built together at Serenbe, an enrapturing residence Jill calls “a serious mix of who we are.” For now, we’re standing by for the big reveal. 149

Vivian Bencich & John Bencich SQUARE FEET STUDIO

LEED-ACCREDITED ARCHITECT JOHN BENCICH and architectturned-interior designer Vivian Bencich met as graduate students at Georgia Tech in 1989. But it was more than a decade before they converged to form Square Feet Studio, a firm the couple created to resolve the disconnect they noticed between the interior design and architecture worlds. Embracing a philosophy of simplicity and sustainability, the Square Feet Studio team of eight works in harmony at their BeltLine-adjacent, LEED Gold-certified office, which is furnished with Herman Miller chairs, salvaged steel desks and a Skylar Morgan table tailor-made for their “meetings of the mind,” Vivian says. The couple has also carved out communal pinup areas, project stations and a “room within a room,” so the principals can power through ideas while sipping on coffee. 150

Square Feet Studio projects are renowned for weaving storylines visitors can connect with, whether the firm is enhancing a building’s historical blueprint or crafting fresh character for first-generation spaces—this much is evident in their award-winning projects (accolades from AIA, IIDA and ADAC keep stacking up) as well as their showroom designs for industry veterans like Ryan Hughes and Jared Paul. All told, these two “divide-and-conquer” types live by one sage piece of advice: Always have a sense of humor. Success, they recognize, is more than just spending time together; it’s also paying attention. “Working together is not unlike the mechanics of marriage,” says John. “You need to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, make collective decisions, have each other’s back, but tell your partner if you think they’re wrong, too. And, always trust your gut.”

Nancy Duffey & Ryan Duffey

J. RYAN DUFFEY ARCHITECT, INC. + SCOUT FOR THE HOME INTERIORS

ATLANTA NATIVE NANCY DUFFEY MAY COME from an enviable design lineage (her grandmother is acclaimed designer Carolyn Malone), but she’s never been one to rest on her laurels. After earning an art history degree from Ole Miss, the designer cut her teeth with Dan Carithers, Susan Bozeman and Summerour & Associates, where she landed in 2006. It was there that she met her future husband, Ryan Duffey, a bright West Texas native with an architecture degree from Notre Dame. “Our first project together was in Savannah,” Ryan recounts. “After a great dinner out, I let it slip that I had feelings for her. Initially, I don’t think it changed anything, but I had planted a seed!” That seed blossomed, and the couple wed in 2009. Shortly thereafter, the pair teamed up to open Nancy’s East Andrews retail boutique, Scout for the Home, while Ryan opened his practice, J. Ryan Duffey Architect, in 2011. At first, collaborations were sporadic, but as Nancy’s focus shifted to interiors in 2014, they traded the store for a joint office space—where their two dogs and daughter can also play—allowing them more team-up time than ever. To wit, the duo has completed renovations in Brookhaven and Druid Hills. “When we are collaborating on a project, our best ideas come when our minds are at ease: on the porch, a neighborhood walk with the dogs or cooking dinner,” Ryan says. And their talents shine separately, too; Nancy is pairing up on projects with a few other local architects, though she remains her husband’s biggest fan. Ryan’s sound reputation reflects his dedication both in the studio and in the field. With second homes in the works at Serenbe, Seagrove Beach and Lake Burton, his designs are also bringing dreams to fruition for a lucky few—including the Duffey’s growing family. 151

Michelle Martin & Greg Martin

KOLO COLLECTION + ATLANTA MADE

MICHELLE AND GREG MARTIN MET ON A BLIND DATE in 2000, then married a little over a year later, barefoot on a beach in St. Lucia. Just two years after their union, they debuted Kolo Collection, the Westside outdoor furniture store that has commanded countless fans—designers and consumers alike—in the 12 years since. This sweeping success is partly due to their combined pedigree: Greg’s grandparents had owned the only furniture store in his hometown of Ellis, Kansas, so he learned the ropes well before trying his hand at law and music management—and boomeranging back to his true passion. Michelle has spent her entire career in the design trade, beginning her journey at the Atlanta Decorative Arts center in 1988. While Michelle is a problem solver, Greg is the idea generator, always asking, “What is the next big thing?” He commands the business arm of the company while Michelle masters sales. And thanks to their neighborly approach, they’ve established an atmosphere that’s inviting and upbeat. Customers come to peruse top-of-the-line inventory by Brown Jordan, DEDON, Royal Botania, Fermob, Manutti, Walters Wicker, Loll Designs, Jensen Leisure and Mamagreen. So when Michelle decided to parlay their following into an adjacent new concept, Atlanta MADE, in 2013, Greg was nothing short of supportive. Her dream of corralling the best local talent quickly amassed a huge fan base, garnering numerous media accolades. Currently splitting duties for two stores, the partners overlap less these days, but always remain in sync. “We sell what we love and believe in,” Michelle says. Case in point: Kolo’s latest venture, the Grill Zone, which opened in July, and a new e-commerce site certain to catapult it to even more stratospheric success.

INTERIOR DESIGNER LAURIEL LEONARD and former medical account rep Craig Smith first crossed paths 20 years ago, when Craig spotted Lauriel across a furniture showroom. Lauriel’s best friend and the store’s owner, Tim Hobby, played matchmaker, setting up the pair on a blind date that turned out to be “the best I ever had,” she recalls. After marrying two years later, they launched Dex Industries in 2000—the culmination of a creative spark from Craig, who conjectured that concrete countertops would be a chic addition to their new kitchen. He mixed the first batch in the garage, and after designers like Michael Habachy praised the results, the rest of the design world followed. In the years since, the couple has collaborated with bluechip brands such as Ann Sacks, Clodagh and the Rockwell Group, while Dex Industries has mushroomed to 20 employees. Everything from seashells to soda bottles show up in their artful, often recycled terrazzo materials. Beyond countertops, their commissions include furnishings, tiles, sinks, even exterior ductal cladding for a Louis Vuitton boutique. Though they’ve contributed to The Setai Miami Beach and The Regent Palms in Turks and Caicos, they keep busy close to home, too, from their 100-year-old, 65,000-square-foot industrial headquarters made of—what else?—concrete. Their advice to married moguls: “It either works or it doesn’t. The good news is you find out quickly if it doesn’t,” Lauriel says with a laugh.

RANDY AND COURTNEY TILINSKI MET THROUGH mutual friends in 1992, then found their paths continually crossing. “I had a crush on Courtney from the first day I met her, but was extremely shy,” Randy confesses. “We finally got there, though. The first time she went to New York, I gave her a list of places to go.” The devoted couple wed in 1996, and nurtured big dreams of going into business together. Though Courtney began her career in fashion, the pair first teamed up at the now-defunct Virginia-Highland shop Maddix Deluxe, where she served as CEO and buyer, and Randy as chief financial officer. With the help of the store’s original owner, current Jamestown Properties COO Michael Phillips, they boldly opened Bungalow Classic on the Westside in 2000, around the time Bacchanalia was first making its mark. “We traveled to New York, L.A., San Francisco and Paris … and we saw these glimmers of ideas we wanted to replicate in a more affordable city,” says Randy. “We knew no one could do it as expansively as we could in Atlanta.” To this day, their light-filled, 154

bi-level showroom on Howell Mill Road feels just as collected, worldly and interesting as ever. “I can be a bit more formal and classic, while Randy can lean a bit more primitive or modern,” Courtney explains of the aesthetic they brilliantly layer together. “We’ve learned to give and take in that sense, to create something that can coexist,” adds Randy, who typically handles finances and tackles the “big picture” of the showroom design. “He sets up the foundational sofas and chairs, and I come back in to do the pillows and lamps,” Courtney says. That lighting includes Suzanne Kasler, Aerin Lauder, Mr. Brown, Made Goods and Simon Pearce. This month, the couple will introduce eight patterns in six colorways of exclusive Clay McLaurin textiles and toss pillows. And while their boutique of Verellen linen furniture remains a point of pride, they just welcomed a half-dozen additions to their own line of upholstery. “Designers love it because it can be customized,” says Randy. “I think everyone enjoys the fact that they can have something special.”

Life … According to Marcia

OUR SENIOR CONTRIBUTING EDITOR REVEALS WHAT’S ON HER RADAR THIS MONTH

I’m over the moon for … My new Pucci Caftan from Neimans for my last few minutes at the beach. Can someone call Capri and get me a free ticket?

I have a hankering for … Crème brulée French toast with bourbon macerated strawberries from One Eared Stag. I have only recently recovered from my post-divorce, moneysaving French toast and pancake dinners. While I swore then that another Aunt Jemima bottle might send me to a psych ward, time heals all (food wounds included) and this is worth living for.

Don’t walk, but run … To the Atlanta Botanical Garden to see the giant topiary sculptures at “Imaginary Worlds: New Kingdom of Plant Giants,” complete with gorillas and orangutans and frogs, before it closes next month. If they leave me there alone, I may Edward Scissorhands up an Anabelle handbag topiary.

I’m currently obsessing over …

160

I have to have … A French gilt mirror with hardcore bling like a bunch of swags and putti from Jacqueline Adams Antiques. I might, just might, be able to stand the wrinkles on my face if I can view them in a trumeau and some low-wattage bulbs. (Okay, candles might be better.)

Joss & Main, for their flash-sale chic furniture. My all-time fave is the Anastasia chaise—perfect for a fainting couch (and with my daughter, Anabelle starting at Tulane this fall, I have a whole lot of fainting in my future). It also doesn’t hurt that jossandmain.co.uk will carry the Marcia Sherrill Home Collection’s Koi pillow. Brits dig that fish!
