Expires 2/28/22 The Georgia Water Coalition has released its 2021 Dirty Dozen annual report highlighting the politics, policies and issues that threaten the health of Georgia’s water. From coal ash contamination and mining operations to sewage leaks and climate change, the list includes most of the state’s high-profile bodies of water. On the list: Chattahoochee River, Ocmulgee River, Ogeechee River, St. Simons Sound, Okefenoke Swamp, Georgia’s Coast, Whitewater Creek, Flint River, Coosawattee River, Conasauga-Oostanaula, and issues with groundwater toxins. ▲The PATH Foundation will get $28 million in funding for trails throughout the City of Atlanta after a vote by the Atlanta City Council in December. DeKalb County has adopted a resolution to transition to 100% clean energy by 2050, making it the sixth local government in Georgia to make such a pledge. The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the resolution at its December meeting. The commitment calls for the county government to transition to using 50% renewable energy by 2025 and 100% by 2035. Additionally, the resolution calls for 100% clean energy community-wide by 2045. The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners also included details on an equitable transition, ensuring benefits to low-income citizens and prioritizing a just transition for those currently employed by the energy sector, currently reliant on fossil fuels.DeKalb County joins Atlanta, Athens-Clarke County, Augusta-Richmond County, Clarkston, and Savannah in pledging to transition to 100 percent clean energy.
