Publisher’s Note
The holiday season is here! It seems that we just got into the groove of autumn, with its cool weather and beautiful colors, and suddenly December has arrived. No matter what holiday — or holidays! — your family observe this month, there are plenty of ways to celebrate here in Atlanta. My family is excited to experience as many holiday happenings as we can.
Light shows are better than ever this year! Don’t miss the Illuminights, a lantern festival at Zoo Atlanta, Winter WonderLights at the State Botanical Garden or the drive-through World of Illumination at Six Flags White Water. See a performance of “A Christmas Carol,” “The Nutcracker,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” or catch a show that offers a new twist on an old favorite. Go ice skating or snow tubing, visit with Santa, head to a holiday market or enjoy an early New Year’s Eve celebration. Use our Holiday Fun Guide to find activities from A-Z, along with light displays, city celebrations and parades.
Ready to take a break from the holiday rush? December is the perfect time to relax with a good book. We are a family of readers — my kids love books and are even participating in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl this year. Find a book you and your kids will love with our Best Books of 2024. There is something for every age and interest —see page 24. You might even want to try forming your own family book club — it’s a fun way to start some interesting discussions. You may be surprised at the reflections and ideas your kids come up with!
For a different take on family time, consider visiting one of Atlanta’s interactive gaming experiences. There are several of these gaming spots around town; they offer a fun combination of on-screen or VR experiences and physical challenges. Read our parent review of Activate, a gaming experience where your group can play themed games as a team or competitively.
I hope the last month of 2024 is a good one for your family. There’s a lot to look forward to this season — dive in and enjoy every minute of it!

Must-Have Apps for a Successful Holiday Season
by Pam Molnar
Surviving the holiday season requires a little superpower, a little creativity and a lot of organization. While it wouldn’t hurt to have Martha Stewart’s number in your phone contacts, most of us are not that lucky. Instead, we have come up with these must have apps that will make your holiday more organized, more helpful and more fun. Check it out!
l Elfster: If you are doing a Secret Santa gift exchange between friends, coworkers or family, this app is for you! Simply add your groups’ emails and it randomly chooses your exchange. It also includes wish lists so you know everyone’s preferences. This free app is available on IOS and Android.
l The Christmas Card List: If holiday cards have become a chore, download them to The Christmas Card List app on IOS or Android. This app not only tracks the Christmas cards you send and receive, but it also allows you to print labels or addresses directly to the envelopes. You can also sync from your contact lists on other apps to save you time.
l The Advent App: Available on iPhones, this app allows you to create personalized Advent calendars for family and friends for 99 cents and they can receive them for free. Every day they will receive a personalized photo, text or a gift selected by you.
l Elf Yourself: Make silly dance videos of up to five people with images from your phone or Facebook. The app is free, but downloading and sharing the videos will cost 99 cents to $6.99.
l Amazon Shopping: If you don’t already have this popular app on your phone, add it now. Not only is it great for online shopping, but it also serves as a price comparison while shopping locally. With a subscription to Amazon Prime, you can also get free shipping and free access to Prime Video and Music.
l Allergy Eats: This is a great guide for checking how allergy-friendly restaurants are in your area. Simply type in the allergen and your location in the search. The results are ratings based on the actual experiences by other families. You have the option to leave comments, too.
l Scout Elf Ideas: If you have an Elf on the Shelf, you know how hard it is to come up with new ideas every night (and every year). This app gives you new inspiration along with material lists and set up instructions. There is also a Santa safe kid’s area on the app with activities and videos.
l Pinterest: This app has saved me so many times while shopping for holiday recipes when I left my list at home. Pinterest offers millions of ideas for recipes, crafts, games and so much more. Pins will take you directly to the recipe or directions so you will have everything you need while at the store.
l SignUpGenius: It takes a village to get through holiday planning and Sign Up Genius is a great way to divide the tasks. Use it for bringing food to a potluck, driving the carpools or shift schedules at work.
l Christmas Ringtones: Get into the spirit of the holidays by assigning Christmas ringtones to your frequent callers, texts and other alerts. There are several versions available for free on IOS and Android.
l Catch Santa In My House: This is a great app for kids who are questioning Santa. Take a picture of a room in your house and add Santa (there are over 120 poses) to the picture to “prove” he exists. Free app available on IOS or Android.
l Shutterfly: What do you do with all those photos you took during the holidays? Get them off your phone and store them on Shutterfly for free. In addition, get free 4 x 4 or 4 x 6 prints through the app version only.
l Christmas Gift List Tracker: Keep track of your list as well as your spending with a budget app. Users can make a list with ideas, purchases and track their spending with charts. You can sync your list with all your devices, share your lists with others and refer to lists from previous years. There is even a built in countdown to keep you on schedule.

From day one, campers make connections; harvest and eat food from an on-site organic garden; learn and develop life skills like bike riding, swimming, cooking, archery, and more. They will make a mess eating s’mores around the campfire, get creative in art and music and push themselves out of their comfort zone on a multi-level ropes course. For teens, there’s even more adventure with programming that includes kayaking, fishing and a 1,200-foot mega zipline. At Camp Southern Ground, your child will explore over 400 acres of wilderness, build relationships with peers and counselors, and make memories that will last a lifetime. CULTURAL CONNECTIONS for the Whole Family This Holiday Season
by Christina Katz
While you are gathering everyone together for holiday adventures, why not introduce some new cultural experiences? While traditions can be comforting during the winter months, introducing variety into your holiday routines can shine a light on other cultures and create bright new memories.
Try a Taste of Hanukkah
This year, Hanukkah starts on the evening of Christmas, so what better time to incorporate a new taste at your table. If you have never made and enjoyed fresh potato pancakes, your family is in for a treat! Latkes are traditional fare during Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. The story of Hanukkah involves lantern oil miraculously lasting much longer than expected, which is why oil-centric foods are featured throughout the eight days and nights of this holiday. You probably already have most of the ingredients on hand.
Potato Latke Recipe
2 cups coarsely grated baking potatoes, peeled
3 large eggs
1-1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon grated onions
1-1/4 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil for frying
Bring Nature Inside
Most people are familiar with the Christmas tradition of bringing cut trees and evergreen tree branches into homes to symbolize the anticipation of earth’s re-greening at the conclusion of winter. Why not visit a tree farm this year, even if you have an artificial tree? You could always bring home a less-than-perfect tree and deconstruct it into boughs to deck your halls. Do your research online for the best match for your needs. Often, tree farms supply saws or pre-cut trees, so all you have to do is dress for the weather and pile in the car. Farms further from the crowds might be a little more do-it-yourself, so be sure to check reviews about tree quality and selection. After you have happily picked a tree, cut it down, and secured it to your car roof, why not treat the family to a hot beverage? Don’t forget to take plenty of selfies!
Knock on the Door of Enlightenment
Tips: Wrap grated potatoes in a clean dish towel and squeeze as much moisture out of them as you can before you proceed. You may also substitute up to a half cup of another grated root vegetable for potatoes. If so, squeeze the moisture out of them, as well. Make more than you think you need because they go fast as soon as they are served.
Directions: Put frying oil in a flat skillet over medium-high heat. Mix all the prepared ingredients together. Drop batter into oil in threeinch cakes about 1/4 inch thick. Fry until browned on the bottom then flip and repeat browning. If oil starts to scorch, turn it down. Pancakes should be crisp and can be kept warm on a plate in the oven on the lowest setting. Place paper towels between layers to drain. Sprinkle lightly with salt. Serve with organic applesauce and high-quality sour cream. Makes 12 pancakes.
In Japan every December 8th, Buddhists celebrate the moment when the Buddha reached enlightenment. In this spirit, give meditation a try at home. Teaching your children how to meditate may be the singlebest thing you can do to help them manage stress throughout their lives. Invite your kids to sit on the ground with legs crossed comfortably, with a straight back, eyes closed and attention focused gently on the space just above the center of their eyebrows. The symbol of the famous Bodhi (fig) tree may be helpful in encouraging them to imagine they have roots reaching down from the base of their spines and branches reaching up into the sky from the top of their heads. Try ‘sitting like a tree’ as a family for just five or 10 minutes at first. See how long the whole family can sit still in quiet inner contemplation and then increase the time gradually. Most parents would agree that any amount of time holding completely still constitutes a small holiday miracle. Commemorate each successful sitting session with a cup of herbal tea and a cookie afterwards.
Banish Some Darkness from the World
Kwanzaa incorporates light as a celebration of AfricanAmerican culture. On each night of the holiday that begins December 26, a candle is lit to observe the seven principles of Kwanzaa, which include Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (selfdetermination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba
(creativity) and Imani (faith). Embrace the values of these holidays by discussing real challenges faced in communities and regions in metro Atlanta and throughout the world. Make a donation to or volunteer with an organization with a crucial mission. Help kids understand that some of the most concerning problems can be soothed when approached with a helpful, compassionate attitude.
Sparkle Up Your Feast
Most winter holidays and festivals have two things in common with traditional Western Christmas — lighting up the space and feasting. Why not create a focus on both of these traditions on the Winter Solstice, the shortest, darkest day of the year? This year, that’s December 21. Choose a spot in your home, like a fireplace hearth, and gather all of your candles around it for an impactful display. Or scatter little lights and candles throughout a room or even throughout an entire floor of your home. When it’s time to eat, turn off most of the lights inside and enjoy your evening meal in the glimmer. Nothing turns up the winter magic like relaxing into the almost darkness. This is also a great way to recharge your batteries throughout the typically hectic holiday season.

Faculty are state-certified and degreed teachers who are career educators that nurture faith in God in the hearts of their students. Preschoolers conduct science experiments, master math concepts via iPad Osmo, solve building challenges and create masterpieces using ageappropriate technology. Required Reading: Starting a Family Book Club
by Emily Webb
Book clubs aren’t just for adults! Starting a family book club can be a free or low-cost family activity that allows you to bond, discuss new topics and spend time together. Here are some tips on how to get started and involve everyone.
Explain the idea to your family. The concept of a book club is that each person will read the same book independently (or together) and there will be regular meetings for checking in about what you are reading. Make sure the meetings work for everyone — consistency is the key to solidifying reading as a family priority.
Set achievable goals. How long will it take each family member to complete the reading? Do you want to meet after a number of chapters or after completing the book? Clarify responsibilities before setting a meeting. If you worry your child is too young to focus and complete a book on her own, set aside time to read aloud together.
Take turns selecting the book. You want your kids to enjoy reading, so let them make choices, too. If you don’t come from a family of readers, suggest books that reflect your child’s interests, stage of development or reading level.
Share your own stories. Did you grow up loving to read? Have your family read one of your favorite childhood books. Think of books you loved and want to share, especially books your children might not encounter as a class assignment.
Dive into a series. Reading a series may make it easier for your family to stick to a goal and not have decision fatigue about what book to pick next. If you choose a popular series, you could watch the movie after you finish each book as an additional activity.
Use your resources. Check out books from your local library to keep the cost of buying multiple books down. Libraries also offer digital copies and audiobooks. Is your local bookstore holding an upcoming event with an author? Consider reading one of their books and attending the event. Does your bookstore host book clubs for kids? What recommendations could they give you?
Make it an event. Hold a dinner with food featured in the book, go out to a favorite restaurant, or do a skit to act out the book or a favorite chapter. If your child is old enough, have him plan the meeting when it’s his turn to choose the book.
Provide hands-on activities. Your kids may get bored if they’re just sitting around. Give them something to do while you chat, whether that’s coloring a picture or making a themed craft. Consider creating a scrapbook about your family book club and having everyone color or craft their own review page to include. Check out GrowingBookbyBook.com’s Family Dinner Book Club for book suggestions, themed menus, activities and more.
If you don’t come from a family of readers, suggest books that reflect your child’s interests, stage of development or reading level.
Enjoy your discussion. See if the book offers a discussion guide, or check publisher websites for book club guides, discussion topics or fun activities. Book discussions may give your child the opportunity to bring up a concern she has by making it about a fictional character or problem. If your conversation wanders off topic, that’s ok! The main point is to spend time together. If you can’t find a discussion guide, here are some suggested questions to get the conversation started:
n What did you like and dislike about the book?
n What was your favorite scene or quote?
n Who was your favorite character? Least favorite character?
n Would you recommend this book?
n Would you read another book by this author?
n How did the book make you feel — did you laugh, cry or cringe at any scenes?
n Does the story relate to your own life?

ACTIVATE ATLANTA: GO INSIDE THE GAME!
The whole family will enjoy video games with these interactive experiences.
by Tali Benjamin
Keeping kids, especially ones who LOVE video games, off of screens can be a challenge. As a parent, sometimes it feels like a losing battle. But, what if you embrace the love of gaming at one of Atlanta’s immersive gaming experiences? Believe it or not, the whole family will have fun and you’ll get those bodies moving, too!
This new establishment nestled between Sandy Springs and Buckhead brings gaming to life! My 11-year-old and his friend, who are both gamers, gave the experience a solid 8.5 out of 10. Once you sign in and have your wristband, which gives you access to the playing rooms, you enter a large room set up like a hallway with doors on each side. The space is dark with neon lights and music.
The friendly staff were available to explain how to play and then we were off to choose how to spend our 75 minutes of game time. There are several types of games to play; all last between one and three minutes and are active in some way from throwing to climbing to running. You can choose variations for your experience before you enter the gaming rooms whose names — Grid, Laser, Climb, Press, Hide — clue you into which type of challenge you’ll encounter.
We chose to play cooperatively since it was our first time, but there is a competitive mode. The wristbands track your points while you play and a large screen shows real-time rankings, which the boys loved checking every few games. Our group’s favorite room was Grid. An AI-style voice announces a color and you have five seconds to find a square of that color to stand on. As the levels progress, the game gets harder.
If another group is playing the game you are interested in, you can check into that room and as soon as they are finished, you are allowed to start. The wait times are very short, and the downtime is a good time to catch your breath.
Know Before You Go:
n Wear work-out clothes and sneakers. The games are fast-paced and involve running, crawling and jumping. Be ready to sweat!
n Don’t bring large bags or purses. You only need yourself while playing and carrying

4540 Roswell Road, Suite A, Atlanta. Make reservations at playactivate.com/buckhead
n Hours: Mon.-Thurs. noon-9 p.m.; Fri. 10 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sat. 9 a.m.-11 p.m; Sun. 9 am-10 p.m.

things will inhibit your fun. They have free lockers available, but they aren’t large, so just bring the necessities.
n Have cold drinks in the car for your drive home. The experience really does feel like a workout, and they don’t sell concessions, so be ready with a cooler in the car. Our crew was super thirsty!
n This isn’t really a place for kids younger than 8 with ages 10+ being the best. Certain games are complicated or have things to reach or see over.
n Sand Box VR: If your family is into virtual reality gaming, try Sand Box VR. This immersive gaming experience is designed to be social and provides graphics and games that take at-home VR play to the next level. Play involves full-body motion capture, so you need to be comfortable moving around with a headset on. If you have issues with motion sickness or balance, this is not the experience for you. You have to work together in various virtual worlds to succeed in games specifically designed to be social. This interactive VR experience is designed for kids ages and 10 and up, as well as adults.
There are two locations in Atlanta — The Battery and Interlock (in West Midtown). They are both open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.-midnight on the weekends. You must book online before you go at sandboxvr.com/atlanta/booking. Games range from $50$55/player and you choose what you want to play when you make your reservation.
n Immersive Gamebox: If you have younger children and want to start off with something less intense, try Immersive Gamebox at Avalon in Alpharetta. With games like Angry Birds, Shaun the Sheep and Paw Patrol, this immersive experience is more like traditional video game play, but the game is all around you. It is active in that you walk around during game play but it isn’t too strenuous or challenging for young players.
Open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sun.Thurs. and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Fri.-Sat. You can book a 60-minute family bundle that includes access to 12 games for four people for $95. Other packages are available when you book online at immersivegamebox.com.
