is home to one of only two community colleges located in the South Bay and Harbor Areas, which is Los Angeles Harbor College. It is also the home to 12 Historic-Cultural Monuments. The most recently landmarked monument, Granada Theatre located at 628 N. Avalon Blvd., was designated September 29, 2021

Wilmington is home to the 9-hole “Harbor Park” course at the Harbor Park Golf Course facility which features 3,200 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 37. The course rating is 35.2 and it has a slope rating of 115. Designed by William F. Bell, ASGCA, the Harbor Park Golf Course opened in 1957. This is a beautiful tree-lined course right next to Harbor College and offers easy access from the 110 Harbor Freeway.

Wilmington is located at the center of the Port of Los Angeles. The Port of Los Angeles is America’s Port®, the nation’s premier gateway for international commerce and the busiest seaport in the Western Hemisphere. Located in San Pedro Bay, 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, the Port comprises 7,500 acres of land and water along 43 miles of waterfront.

Your Chamber has been operating since 1904 and our mission is to promote, support and enhance a positive business environment and improve the quality of life in the community.

Handling diverse commodities from avocado to zinc, the Port of Los Angeles features both passenger and cargo terminals, including cruise, container, automobile, breakbulk, dry and liquid bulk, and warehouse facilities that manage billions of dollars’ worth of cargo each year. Currently in the midst of a 10-year, $2.6 billion infrastructure investment program aimed at raising the bar for cargo efficiency, the Port is also focused on new technologies to enhance digital information flow throughout the supply chain.

This thriving seaport is also known for groundbreaking environmental initiatives and remains committed to managing resources and conducting developments and operations in both an environmentally and fiscally responsible manner. The Port has also built a strong reputation for its progressive security measures and community engagement. For the last decade, the Port has also been at the forefront of revitalization of the LA Waterfront, improving public access to the water, developing public-friendly

amenities and infrastructure, and transforming the harbor shoreline into a world-class visitor destination.

Your Wilmington Chamber supports business in many ways including collaboration with other business organizations like the South Bay Association of Chambers of Commerce, the Los Angeles Business Federation and strategic business partners such as Future Ports and the Harbor Association of Industry and Commerce. We work with many partners to provide services to Business such as the Harbor Business Source, The Work Source Center, The Small Business Development Center, Pacific Gateway, SBA and this list is not exhaustive. Your Chamber also works closely with the offices of your elected representatives.

Most importantly, if you want to start a business, contact your Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. We can help! Call 310.834.8586 or visit our website at: www.wilmington-chamber.com.

Many of our Chamber members support the community through significant contributions of their time, talent and resources to numerous community organizations, and through their generosity your Chamber provides additional support through direct contributions and programs. Your Wilmington Chamber donated more than $19,000 in 2018 and in excess of an additional $20,000 dollars thanks to the efforts of our Honorary Mayor Candidates Nancy Anaya, Victor Ibarra and our new Honorary Mayor Carlos Barajas. These dollars went to support The Beacon House, ITEP now EXP, the Wilmington Historical Society, Wilmington Community Clinic, A Needy Wilmington, The Rotary Club of Wilmington, YWCA Breakfast with Santa, Wilmington Tree Lighting, United Wilmington Youth Foundation and World Class Youth Foundation.

Your Wilmington Chamber also sponsors Four Annual Street Fairs. Fleet Week at the Banning Museum, The Harbor Holiday Parade, Cinco de Mayo Street Fair, and Fiestas Patrias Street Fair. We could not do this without the support of our Members, the Council Office and our Supervisor.

HISTORY EDUCATION

WILMINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Do you ever look at an old building or street name and wonder why it’s there? Well, the Wilmington Historical Society is dusting off memorabilia and valuable pieces of information to give current residents a peek back at historical Wilmington.

The Society, which is located at the historic Wilmington Library at 309 West Opp Street, is working towards creating a space where people can learn about Wilmington’s past through articles and pictures. The Society believes that it is important for Wilmington’s history to be known and understood.

The Society has also participated in events where people can learn about Wilmington. As seen in the Donna Littlejohn Daily Breeze article, “Taking Wilmington’s History on the Road”, artifacts and rare photos, including some that had never been on display before, were part of the Wilmington Historical Roadshow. To read more about the event and how The Historical Society was able to teach people about Wilmington’s past, visit: www.dailybreeze.com/2018/06/01/ taking-wilmingtons-history-on-the-road.

The Historical Society’s group currently consists of President Simie Seaman, Treasurer/Secretary Laura Mohberg, Board Member Dave Hall, Volunteer Maria Enriquez, Historian Olivia Cueva Fernandez, Website Designer Lupe Pena, Advisors Tara Fansler, Russell Mohberg, Monique Sugimoto, Brando Werts, Mona Reddick, Melissa Ignacio and Publicist Jacqueline Resendiz M.

Are you interested in learning more about how Wilmington used to look, what people were interested in the past or help out? You can contact the Wilmington Historical Society by emailing them at Wilmingtonhistory@gmail.com or follow them on Facebook at @whsofca.

If you were to explore the educational opportunities available in Wilmington, you would probably be surprised by what you discovered, and not just because of the institutions. Wilmington offers an array of options, from preschool to adult learning and specialized certification programs. What isn’t immediately apparent is the level of dedication and passion for education offered at each one of these institutions.

Wilmington is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The District is made of a total of eight local districts, with Wilmington representing the Eighth District. The public school system in Wilmington comprises the following institutions: Broad Avenue Elementary, Fries Avenue Elementary, Gulf Avenue Elementary, Hawaiian Avenue Elementary, Wilmington Park Elementary, George De LaTorre Jr. Elementary and, the newest edition, Harry Bridges Span School.

Beyond elementary, Wilmington offers its very own Wilmington Middle School and Banning High School. Banning High School is unique, because within its facility you will find the EXP. The academy offers students a variety of specialized learning in a smaller classroom setting, with current active professionals involved in their learning. Also available on the Banning High campus is the Banning Adult School for those needing to complete high school credits, wanting to learn English and so much more.

If teaching is your passion, consider attending Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy at Harbor College. Students are offered the unique opportunity to complete high school with a focus on becoming teachers and earn college credits toward their teaching degree. These students commit to teaching in local schools upon earning their teaching credentials.

Along with our the public schools, Wilmington also offers three excellent private schools from which to choose; Harbor Christian School, St. Peter and Paul School and Wilmington Christian School. All of these institutions offer a range of quality educational opportunities, from preschool through twelfth grade.

Maybe you would be interested in the Los Angeles Harbor College, which is a comprehensive institution of higher education with a broad spectrum of transfer, vocational, and community services programs.

DOING BUSINESS IN WILMINGTON

Wilmington has been an industrial town since its founding in 1857, its rich history intertwined with the development and growth of San Pedro Bay, now the nation’s largest global seaport complex. From the 1869 opening of the first Southern California railroad from Banning’s Landing to Los Angeles, the Wilmington waterfront and its businesses have served the local and trans-Pacific import/export trade.

Over the past 150 years, Wilmington businesses have diversified or evolved to meet the needs of changing, emerging and growing markets employing thousands of local residents in port and infrastructure development, commercial fishing and canneries, boat and shipbuilding, oil recovery and refining, commercial services, manufacturing and the movement of cargo.

Today much of Wilmington’s waterfront is dedicated to the export of goods processed in Wilmington — refined petroleum products, borates used in plastics, rubber, glass and detergents from Rio Tinto Minerals, seafood from State Fish, sporting goods manufactured by American Soccer Company, scrap paper, plastic, glass and aluminum from Potential Industries, and scrap vehicles from the Wilmington Auto Rebuilders, Ecology Auto, Wilmington Recyclers and Pick Your Part Auto Recycling, shredded and exported by SA Recycling, some of which comes back as new household appliances, electronics, auto parts and the containers that carry them.

In the East Basin, Vopak imports and exports liquid and dry bulk commodities and Pasha Stevedoring & Terminals imports heavy construction materials and equipment, rolled newsprint and oversized cargo. Wallenius Wilhemsen Logistics, the largest shipper of autos in the world, employs nearly 200 full-time local union workers who install accessories and customize autos to meet Southern California dealers’ requirements.

The West Basin terminals, TraPac, Yang Ming and China Shipping import and export containerized consumer and commercial goods from a multitude of foreign and American-owned industries worldwide.

Historically a union town, Wilmington is home to many union locals — ILWU, merchant marines, electricians, iron

workers, machinists, pile drivers, and carpenters, and host to the biggest Labor Day parade on the West Coast. Wilmington’s waterfront businesses provide local jobs for thousands of union workers.

As the gateway and transportation corridor to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Wilmington is bordered by two major freeways and the Alameda Corridor railway that links the ports to the transcontinental rail yards near downtown LA. With 50% of the goods that pass through these seaports destined for east of the Rockies, the 2-mile-long cargo trains assembled by Pacific Harbor Line and hauled on the corridor by Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroad accounts for about 30% of it.

More than 12,000 local truck owneroperators service the ports.

Most Wilmington trucking companies contract these truckers to haul cargo from port terminals to regional distribution centers and rail yards. Some offer additional services such as Fast Lane Transportation that sells and stores cargo containers. A multitude of Wilmington businesses such as Central Truck & Oil and Wilmington Truck Stop provide fuel, weigh scales, maintenance services, and truck parking facilities. Wilmington is situated in the midst of the nation’s third largest oil reserve and bordered by three major refineries, Marathon, Phillips 66, and Valero that primarily serve the Southern California region. Sulfur by-products are further processed for agricultural, and feedstock uses by California Sulphur and H.J. Baker & Bros.

Through the consolidation of oil extraction operations, oil wells and storage tanks that once covered much of the 232-acre Wilmington Industrial Park have been removed. In 1974, the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency invested $10 million in infrastructure improvements transforming it into industrial headquarters of more than 75 businesses that includes a diverse mix of manufacturing and port-related industrial use.

Although the residential and port-industrial mix sometimes conflict, it is due to this port-community’s co-dependence and the diversity, adaptability and innovation of Wilmington’s businesses that the community maintains economic vitality even in adverse business climates. Wilmington’s business partners have built elementary school libraries, funded the building and expansion of its youth centers, provided student scholarships and internships, fund Banning High’s International Trade Academy programs and have regularly sponsored community organizations and events.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

Wilmington offers a diverse mix of products and services in the industrial, shipping engineering and logistics fields, as well as a variety of other business segments.

Professional men and women are drawn to the community for many reasons, not the least of which is the potential of working just a few minutes away from home. The labor pool is strong here, too. It is not difficult to find high-quality support staff for just about any business and there are plenty of support facilities available.

Wilmington’s professionals often do business with their friends and neighbors daily. This gives local businesses and professionals that personal touch, all too often disappearing from modern life. It also keeps the business dollars within the community, which, in turn, makes the community even more vibrant.

Of course, a solid Chamber of Commerce always stands ready to offer its support in all professional and business endeavors. The community offers a wide range of innovative businesses and services to help improve both the quality of life and the quality of doing business in the area.

100 E. Water Street, Wilmington

Phineas Banning was a visionary with tremendous energy and love for Southern California, whose imprint on the community of Wilmington is still visible today. It could be said that the remarkable growth of this region literally started at Banning’s Landing over 150 years ago.

BANNING RESIDENCE MUSEUM

401 East “M” Street (at Pacific Coast Highway and Avalon Blvd.), Wilmington

Nestled near the Banning/Wrigley

Historic Preservation Zone in Wilmington and just a few miles from the Port of Los Angeles, the beautiful Banning Museum is one of California’s historic gems.

Built in 1864 by General Phineas Banning, the “Father of the Los Angeles Harbor,” the Banning residence is widely considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in Southern California.

2014 marked the 150th Anniversary of the Banning Mansion. In 2013, the residence underwent major restoration efforts to repair and paint the grand ‘ole place in time for its milestone anniversary of 150 years. Today, the Banning is completely restored and stands sturdy and tall once again to welcome all who visit to share in the history and splendor of a time gone by.

Experience life as it was 100 years ago through the eyes of one of the founders of Los Angeles. For information, call 310.548.7777; $5 donation per person, $1 for children under 12.

DRUM BARRACKS CIVIL WAR MUSEUM

1052 Banning Blvd. (south of East “M” Street), Wilmington

The historic Drum Barracks is the only Civil War-era U.S. Army building still standing in Southern California. The 16-room structure once stood among 19 similar buildings on 60 acres of land donated to the U.S. Army by General Phineas Banning and B.D. Wilson.

Named after Adjutant-General Richard C. Drum, commander of the post, the Drum Barracks served as the main training, staging and supply depot for military operations in Arizona, Southern California and New Mexico. The museum features many items from this era, including an operable Gatling Gun.

Located in the original junior officers’ quarters, the museum displays historical artifacts and is operated by the City of Los Angeles. For information, call 310.548.7509; $5 donation per person, $1 for children under 12.

DRUM BARRACKS POWDER MAGAZINE

1001 Eubank Avenue, Wilmington

Part of the 30-acre Camp Drum (a Civil War-era Union Army facility), the powder magazine housed weapons and

gun powder for the soldiers. Located just a few blocks from the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, it was constructed in 1862 with three-foot thick stone block walls. During the 1920s, a wood frame house was built around the stone building and it was hidden for about 60 years. The structure was moved in the 1980s revealing this historic relic from the Civil War days. Today it sits on a fenced-in vacant lot.

ST.

JOHN’S

EPISCOPAL CHURCH

1547 Neptune Avenue, Wilmington

Mary Hollister Banning (Phineas Banning’s second wife) began holding Episcopal services in the basement of the Banning Mansion in 1876 and subsequently championed the building of a stave-type church. Construction began in 1882 and St. John’s Episcopal Church was finished in 1883. Originally located at 422 N. Avalon Boulevard, the church was moved to its present site in 1943 and still holds Sunday services.

The Banning family donated the altar and the bell, which came from one of Phineas Banning’s channel boats, the S.S. Amelia. In 1926, the church received the altar cross and altar rail as gifts from a US Navy chaplain. The cross and rail were made in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from brass taken from a World War I German submarine.

WILMINGTON CEMETERY

605 East “O” Street, Wilmington

Phineas Banning donated land for the site and constructed the cemetery in 1857 upon the death of his infant child. Banning was originally buried in the cemetery but was later moved to Rosdale Cemetery in Los Angeles. Also interred at the cemetery are Banning’s first wife, Rebbeca Sanford Banning, as well as various family members and numerous Civil War veterans and Drum Barracks soldiers.

BANNING WRIGLEY HISTORIC DISTRICT

The Banning Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) can be found directly south of the historic Banning Residence and Banning Park, including both sides of Lame Avenue, Banning Boulevard and Cary Ave. from M Street to L Street to the south. The Banning Wrigley neighborhood was mainly built in 1927, with a few houses constructed as late as the 1950s. General Banning, a native of Wilmington, Delaware, came to Southern California in 1851 where he quickly established himself as a respected businessman in the fledgling transportation industry growing around the Los Angeles Harbor. General Banning owned interests in several ocean-going vessels, railroads, and stagecoaches in the area.
