Global Citizen Awards Program Book 2022

Page 1

Welcome to the 11th Atlantic Council Global Citizen Awards.

After a two-year break from convening in New York due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we gather this evening on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate individuals who best represent the notion of global citizenship, to underscore the Atlantic Council’s mission of “shaping the future together” with friends and allies, and to inspire others to contribute even more to our global community.

As we celebrate these individuals, we confront global challenges of a far-reaching nature for the geopolitical, economic, and social fabric of the world.

Chief among these global shocks is Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine, which has cost thousands of lives and produced millions of refugees, setting off at the same time crises of food security, energy security, and national sovereignty. As Putin’s war rages on, the United States and our community of allies have rallied around Ukraine in its fight for independence and freedom. Those efforts thus far have been insufficient to stop the war and ensure Ukraine’s survival.

In the United States, Europe, and elsewhere in the world we face rising inflation and slowing economic growth. This is set against the backdrop of contentious domestic political environments in many democracies ahead of US mid-term elections in November.

As we navigate these challenges at home and abroad, the Atlantic Council works to shape a better global future alongside our partners and allies through the papers we write, the ideas we generate, and the communities we convene across our 16 programs and centers.

Tonight, we celebrate five individuals who represent the brand of global citizenship we hope to inspire:

President of Finland Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson, as both countries’ historic decision to join NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine serves as a significant contribution to the alliance’s security and capabilities – and transatlantic unity.

PRESIDENT

President of Indonesia Joko Widodo, for his leadership during Indonesia’s G-20 Presidency, efforts to build bridges to end the devastating war in Ukraine, and wider advocacy for human rights, democracy, and a greater global health architecture.

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, for his exceptional leadership of Google’s efforts in response to Russia’s continuing war in Ukraine, commitment to digital resilience, and ongoing support for refugees and displaced people throughout the world.

Academy Award-winning Actor, Founder and CEO of the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative, and UNESCO Special Envoy for Peace and Reconciliation Forest Whitaker, for his artistic achievements, dedication to social activism, and empowerment of the next generation of global leaders.

This evening’s program will also feature a special tribute to former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, who was tragically assassinated in July 2022. As many of you will recall, we were privileged to honor Prime Minister Abe in 2016 with our Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award, in celebration of his lifetime of public service and extraordinary global leadership.

We are deeply grateful to this evening’s Co-Chairs, the Atlantic Council’s Board of Directors, the International Advisory Board, and other generous friends and partners who have made tonight – and, indeed, all of our work – possible.

Finally, we would also like to offer our gratitude to Victor Chu, the founder of the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Awards, without whose vision tonight’s celebration would not exist.

Thank you for being with us this evening.

He was subsequently employed as a rural police chief and, for more than ten years, as an assistant judge at the Turku Court of Appeal. He also practiced law as an attorney. President Niinistö is married to Jenni Haukio and they have a son, Aaro, born in 2018. President Niinistö also has two adult sons from his previous marriage with Marja-Leena Niinistö, who died in a car crash in 1995.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO H.E. Shinzo Abe FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF JAPAN

On July 8, 2022, the world lost former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to an assassin’s bullet—shocking Japan and the global community, both of which Abe had reshaped in enduring ways. A 2016 recipient of the Atlantic Council’s Global Citizen Award, Abe transformed Japan’s role in the world, as is evident today everywhere from Tokyo’s global security cooperation to its aid to Ukraine.

Introducing Abe at the 2016 Global Citizen Awards (GCA) dinner, World Economic Forum Chairman Klaus Schwab described the then-prime minister as breaking the mold in “a world where political leaders are more and more guided by a radar system, sending out signals, and some constantly changing course depending upon the response received.” Instead of radar, Schwab said, Abe followed “an inner compass, providing directions based on strong values and a clear mission.”

Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, gave a sense of hope, purpose, and possibility to the people of Japan, following his inner compass to nudge his nation toward a stronger international presence in trade, diplomacy, and security.

He reformed military decision-making and enhanced the part the prime minister played in it, while reinterpreting Japan’s pacifist constitution to allow the country to potentially come to the aid of an ally under attack. Abe also helped launch the Quad, a security grouping with the United States, Australia, and India. He was a voice for the whole region—his 2016 GCA speech encouraged the Atlantic Council to undertake its own pivot to the IndoPacific—and a champion of openness and democracy.

This is a tragedy for Japan and for all who knew him. His vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific will endure. Above all, he cared deeply about the Japanese people and dedicated his life to their service.

Its Worldwide Commitment To

BE A WELCOMER

Join the national effort to welcome Afghan and Ukrainian newcomers as they build new lives in the United States.

No act of welcome is too small. You can be a Welcomer by simply donating to the Welcome Fund to support community organizations, donating essential goods or airline miles, or most urgently…sponsoring a family. What act of welcome will you do today?

VISIT WWW.WELCOME.US TO SIGN UP AND LEARN MORE.

Welcome.US is a new national initiative built to unleash the desire and capacity of people across America to welcome more newcomers and help them thrive. We began with our new Afghan neighbors and have expanded to those displaced by the war in Ukraine, while also building a durable capacity and ability to welcome other newcomers. We operate on the evidence that direct participation with newcomers transforms both the Welcomer and those being welcomed. Our ultimate ambition is for every American community – and the nation as a whole – to have the resources and willingness to welcome newcomers, now and in the future.

YOU CAN BE THE BRIDGE TO SAFETY FOR A UKRAINIAN FAMILY FLEEING WAR

People forced to flee their homes in Ukraine are seeking refuge in the U.S., and Americans are asking how they can help –Welcome Connect was built to bridge this gap.

Welcome Connect empowers Americans – like you – to be Welcomers. This first-of-its-kind platform connects Americans with Ukrainains seeking refuge in the United States – to start a conversation, mutually agree on sponsorship, and access Welcome.US resources as they navigate the application process.

Sponsorship changes lives, including yours. It provides a pathway to safety and security to displaced Ukrainians, but it also offers you a transformative way to channel your capacity to help into being a guide, a friend, and a Welcomer.

Now more than ever, we need to show the world what our nation of Welcomers can do.

Ukraine has shown unparalleled courage, sacrifice, and tenacity in the defense of its sovereignty and identity, and European security and values.

We invite you to join these efforts by attending and supporting a Benefit Concert for Ukraine at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall in Washington DC on October 18, featuring celebrated superstar violinist, Grammy Award-winner Joshua Bell, and Ukraine’s globally acclaimed New Era Orchestra.

Sponsorship monies raised will benefit United24, an initiative launched by President Zelensky (and audited by Deloitte) as the primary charitable vehicle to support victims of Russia’s aggression.

To learn more about the ways you or your organization can support this urgent effort to deliver direct assistance where it's needed most to the people of Ukraine, please contact: Alexa@ChopivskyFF.org

Please visit Kennedy-Center.org for ticketing information

This performance is an external rental presented in coordination with the Kennedy Center Campus Rentals Office and is not produced by the Kennedy Center.
