ATLANTIC FELLOWS FOR RACIAL EQUITY About AFRE Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity is a network of changemakers building solidarity and action for a more equitable future. Our work advances leadership, solidarity, ideation, and action to address the systemic challenges of anti-Black racism and white supremacy in three ways: ● ● ●

Intensive leadership development of 20 changemakers from South Africa and the United States through a rigorous Fellowship programme. General support of 100 Senior Fellows through intermittent networking and resourcing opportunities. Diffuse reach across 97+ countries through our podcast Race Beyond Borders and our magazine Moya, both of which examine experiences of race and Blackness in their full complexity across geographies and time.

Our Fellowship Experience The AFRE Fellowship experience connects 20 changemakers working across far-ranging disciplines in South Africa and the United States to build futures beyond anti-Blackness. Over 18 months, Fellows engage an interweaving exploration of racial equity and leadership through the prisms of self, society, and solidarity. They have opportunities to build relationships with one another, deliberate on the complexities of racial equity, reflect deeply on their leadership and experiment with new ideas. Turning from a mainly national and transnational way of understanding structural racism and imagining racial equity, the Fellowship also allows leaders to open their frame of reference to include global trends and levers for change. As the experience unfolds, Fellows increasingly crystalise their personal and collective vision for a racially equitable future by developing and honing project ideas. The journey ends with Fellows dreaming and strategising together, informed by the possibility of their shared vision and action, to birth the world anew and build the future. Our Senior Fellow Experience Upon completing the fellowship, the outgoing cohort of Fellows is invited to join AFRE’s Senior Fellow community. Our Senior Fellows have access to a variety of resources and supports from AFRE for continued learning, connection, including connection with Fellows across other cohorts, and community-building. Ongoing support for funded projects may also continue into the Senior Fellowship. Our Senior Fellows are also eligible to participate in the global network of Atlantic Fellows, where they build community with members of the Global Atlantic Fellows community and may apply for funding and other support for racial equity projects.
