ajff WELCOME TO THE 4TH Annual AJFF! Dear Film lovers: The 2017 Atlantic Jewish Film Festival follows last year’s smash success with another exciting weekend of Jewish-themed films from around the world. Dramas, documentaries, and comedies have been carefully selected; the Gala Party has been planned for weeks; theatres are booked; volunteers at the ready. We are excited about sharing our film choices with you – please say hello and let us know what you think.

AJFF Mandate The Atlantic Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) is presented by the Atlantic Jewish Council, a not-for-profit society in Nova Scotia. The mission of the AJFF is to provide an opportunity for the public to experience the Jewish world through film. Our intentions are to celebrate diversity, promote cultural awareness, urge cooperation between nations, to educate and support curiosity and learning, to spark conversation and questioning, and most of all to inspire a greater understanding of Jewish life. We invite you to join us.

JEWISH FILM FESTIVALS In 1980 a group of people took a chance on starting a Jewish film festival in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Thirty-six years later, 35,000 people attend over 120 screenings annually over three weeks. Currently, there are more than one hundred Jewish film festivals around the world including Africa and Hong Kong. The Halifax-based AJFF opened its festival doors four years ago.

AJFF MiNiSTER’S MESSagE On behalf of the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 4th annual Atlantic Jewish Film Festival. The organizers of the festival have done an incredible job in bringing films to Nova Scotia that we otherwise wouldn’t see. It allows us to explore the Jewish experience through film, and share stories we will never forget. Community and cultural organizations, like the Atlantic Jewish Film Festival, play a key role in Nova Scotia’s Culture Action Plan. Launched earlier this year, the plan was developed to do more for our cultural sector, more to celebrate and share our culture, and more for our diverse communities. Congratulations to the organizers and to the volunteers for producing such a wonderful event. Enjoy the festival!

ajff About the AJC The Atlantic Jewish Council (AJC) has been the cornerstone of Jewish life in the Atlantic provinces since 1975. Working with national Jewish agencies, the AJC presents a strong voice for Israel and the Canadian Jewish community. It represents the Atlantic Jewish population to all levels of government and to a large number of Jewish and non-Jewish organizations. The AJC is also a defence against antisemitism: interfaith dialogue, multicultural and inspirational programming, and topical films are just a few of the tools the AJC uses to educate the public and to mediate discrimination. The AJC is delighted to present the 2017 Atlantic Jewish Film Festival.

Proud to sponsor the Atlantic Jewish Film Festival Jewish Canadians play an important role in the arts and have been contributing to Canada’s culture since Confederation.

When the women’s balcony in an Orthodox synagogue collapses, leaving the rabbi’s wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock, the congregation falls into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a saviour after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. This tests the women’s friendships and creates a rift between the community’s women and men. This comedy/drama is about community, old traditions and values, and the power of women to keep all of these together in the face of modern extremism. 11

The Jewish director of this film installed a camera over the hair washing basin in a small salon owned by a Christian Arab woman in Haifa, Israel. As she washes their hair, she talks with the clients, both Jews and Arabs, posing questions about life in Israel. What emerges from these conversations is an honest and nuanced portrait of contemporary Israel.

Yossi, a charismatic Kosher butcher with lightning quick knife-wielding skills, angers his boss and loses his job. He does the rounds of other kosher butchers to no avail so decides to disguise himself as Muslim in order to find work at a Halal butcher shop. While this short film is a comedy incorporating “fish out of water” and laugh-out-loud slapstick humour, it’s also a story that explores the relationship between Jews and Muslims.

Special Guest Stephen Cooke will be in attendence at the Short Program 12

In this hilarious musical comedy gem, legendary cantor Leibele Waldman plays all three candidates auditioning for a synagogue committee in search of a High Holidays cantor. Displeased with the first two applicants, a Galitzianer and a Daytsher (German), the committee finds its man: a modern chazan with “pep and jazz” who does Kol Nidre with a “two-step.”

In this award winning documentary short, a 91 year old Holocaust survivor donates the violin he’s owned for 70 years to a local instrument drive, changing the life of a 12 year old girl from one of America’s poorest districts and, unexpectedly, his own. Joe’s Violin poignantly shows how a small act can have great impact. the to H ! NC am r LU g UR Pro YO

Alisa Snyder, illustrator will be at the screening of the short film Lubin, From Chelm, October 22, 1:30 pm Alisa Snyder, Lubin illustrator is a painter whose primary subjects have been the figure, still life and landscape. Central to her practice is an emotional response to nature and painting in history. She has taught classes in drawing and watercolour, and for several years, taught art history at Mount St. Vincent University. Sandy Greenberg and Thomas Cormier of Razzmatazz for Kids will get you hugging someone you love, clucking like a chicken, riding a bumpy bus, singing, hopping, dancing, clapping your hands, or performing on stage with them at their fun children’s concert of both well-known and original songs. They have been delighting young audiences for over 20 years at festivals, special events, and schools. Sesame Street made a music video of their song, “Going to my Grandma’s”. Razzmatazz for Kids was invited to perform for the First Ladies of the United States and Canada at the National Library in Ottawa, and has been a featured performer with Symphony Nova Scotia. Razzmatazz for Kids has won “Children’s Recording of the Year” at the East Coast Music Awards, “Children’s Group of the Year” from Music Nova Scotia, and a “Recommended” Award from Parents’ Choice in the United States. It is the first in a cycle of stories that occur in the mythical Jewish city of fools known as Chelm. Children’s Troupe Auricolae (Latin for ‘Little Ears”), was founded in 2001 by artistic director, narrator and violinist David Yang and has performed for thousands of young people of all backgrounds. Audience participation and non-spoken means of communication are hallmarks of the presentations. The goal is to get young people thinking about different ways to tell a story; actual words are just one piece of a puzzle. You can tell a story without speaking by letting the music speak for itself and hearing how music invokes feelings and thoughts.

CDs by Children’s Troupe Auricolae will be available for purchase – for children AND their parents. 19
