I’m Eric Hasanoff, the current Chairman of the Board for the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce, and branch manager at my company, Golden Empire Mortgage. I joined the Chamber because I believe it’s important to be connected with other business owners and like-minded individuals.

As the new Executive Director for the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce, I wanted to share some of my plans for the future of the chamber.

My plans with the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce are to focus on marketing, technology and bringing businesses together to help grow. Businesses should all be a part of the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce. It’s important to stay connected. Businesses around us want to do business with others in our community. Through the Chamber, we hope to ensure that you do business with other businesses in our community. It’s also important for our members to be engaged with our business community. There is no better way to become engaged with your business community than to become a part of the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce. Supporting local business is supporting your own community. My goal with the Chamber is to make sure businesses get the most exposure as possible for

their membership. We want to make sure our members are seen by as many potential clients as possible. The Chamber also helps connect businesses with our local government and gives them access to the City of Chino, the City of Chino Hills and the County of San Bernardino. The Chamber helps businesses understand what is happening in our cities and how they can use that information to help set up their businesses for success. I’m excited for the Chamber in 2019. We have grown our membership by more than 60 members in 2018, have added great community partners and have enhanced all of our annual and regular events. It’s truly a great time to be a member of the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce.

My online marketing business, Welborn Media, joined the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce in 2012 and became Chino Business of the Year in 2013. Because of my business, I became involved in the Chamber by heading the Membership Committee, becoming a Board Member, Executive Board Member and Chairman of the Board in the 2015/2016 year. Since starting my own business I’ve had a strong passion to help business owners be more successful and I am excited to take on this new role to help more businesses in the Chino Valley achieve their goals. One of my highest goals since joining the Chamber was helping local businesses compete in the global marketplace by understanding how to use the internet to drive business. In today’s economy, the online and the offline world have changed the way business is done. It’s important for an organization like the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce not only to set a strong example,

but also to help businesses take advantage of the internet to build a better business. To that end, I plan to have an open dialogue through a monthly Executive Director’s Report to keep you in the loop about everything that’s happening at the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce and, hopefully, give you some ideas and ways to improve your business along the way. HOUSED IN HISTORY Since its founding in 1913, the Chamber has served its members from a variety of office locations. In 1999, the Chamber relocated to the first floor of the historic Gray House, now owned by the City of Chino and one of only two designated historic landmarks in the City of Chino. Built in 1887 for City founder Richard Gird (see History of the Chino Valley), the 3,000 sq. ft., seven-room, two-story Victorian house is deemed one of the oldest, if not “the” oldest building in Chino. Reflecting the Victorian “Stick” architecture style, the Gray House is Chino’s one remaining “Painted Lady,” a term used in the late Victorian age to denote the multi-color paint combination favored at that time. The Gray House sports a “simple” 5-color

combination of light green, maroon, yellow, rose and gold. Some of the more fanciful “Painted Ladies” were painted in as many as 15 colors. The “Stick” style of architecture, with its tall, angular “two-and-a-half story” appearance, was considered by the staid Victorians to be sturdy and spare, but few excellent examples remain today as the style was eventually supplanted by the more elaborate “Queen Anne” style. The Gray House has changed hands fewer than ten times and has been a post office, millinery, boarding house, a coffee shop, and a real estate office. Welcome to the City of Chino Hills – a great place to be! We are extremely proud of our family-friendly community. Our residents enjoy a high quality of life, great diversity and our designation as one of the safest cities in the United States! The City of Chino Hills continues to rank among the safest cities in California. There are 106 cities in California with a population of 50,000 to 100,000, with Chino Hills ranking as the #4 safest city relative to violent crime and 13th safest city for property crimes. Chino Hills came in #9 on the “California’s 50 Safest Cities of 2018” list published by Safewise, and #14 on Safe Home’s “California’s Safest Cities” list. We have retained our rural heritage in Chino Hills even as our population has climbed to over 83,000. Our commitment and resolve to create a balanced community led us to cluster development around our road system and preserve over 3,000 acres of community-owned open space. It is common for us to see hawks flying in the open spaces visible throughout Chino Hills. Our residents enjoy 48 miles of trails and 43 beautiful parks that offer something for everyone. Chino Hills Community Park is our flagship sports park where athletes play soccer, baseball, softball, and football on synthetic turf. Grand Avenue Park is home to two lighted regulation-size soccer fields with year round play on synthetic turf, three lighted basketball courts, and two lighted tennis courts. Chino Hills has always been a special place in Southern California. Virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, the rolling hills were home to a few ranches and homesteaders. The majority of the residents were red-tail Hawks, deer, mountain lions, cottontail rabbits and coyotes. In 1907, Boys Republic made Chino Hills its home. The facility continues to provide important contributions to the lives of young people and sends its famous Della Robbia wreaths around the world during the holidays.

CHINO HILLS STATE PARK PRESERVED A grassroots organization, known as Hills for Everyone, was the guiding force behind the preservation of 12,500 acres of land that became the largest State Park located in an urban setting. Land acquisitions increased the park to over 14,000 acres.

instead of “Canyon Hills” and elected five Chino Hills residents to represent them as City Council Members at large. Dec. 1, 1991, is the official incorporation date of the City of Chino Hills. Top priorities were to increase law enforcement services, establish a library, devise an economic development plan, attract a regional mall, maintain the rural atmosphere, explore recreation services, and create citizen commissions.

PROVIDING NEW SERVICES

CHINO HILLS SPECIFIC PLAN APPROVED Over the next few decades, word was spreading that Chino Hills was a great place for year-round living. Residents wanted to preserve the hills and guide development to the most suitable locations. In 1979, the County of San Bernardino initiated development of the Chino Hills Specific Plan – the document that would guide the development of 18,000 acres – 26 square miles (the area had been protected from haphazard development because the land was not flat enough to build inexpensively). Approved in 1982, the Plan was the first in the State of California designed for an unincorporated area -- calling for clustered residential development concentrated in village cores and decreasing in density away from the core in order to protect as much open space as possible.

GOVERNED BY SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY Chino Hills residents were represented by one member of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors. The Fourth District County Supervisor appointed citizens to serve as advisors to various County Service Areas that had oversight responsibilities for items such as road maintenance and landscaping. If residents had business with the County, a 45-minute trip to San Bernardino was necessary.

INCORPORATION EFFORT EMERGES In the late 1980s and early 1990s a group of citizens believed that it was time to formally pursue incorporation and make Chino Hills a city. The Chino Hills Incorporation Committee (CHIC) developed a logo and a video to get their message out to the community. The turning point came on Nov. 5, 1991 when 58% of the voters elected to become the 24th incorporated City within the County of San Bernardino, encompassing 45 square miles. Voters chose the name “Chino Hills”

The Council set to work and in 1992, the new Library and City Hall were dedicated, and the first Concerts in the Park series was launched. The mid-90s were a time of explosive growth, with four permanent elementary schools welcoming students and six parks opening. Several new civic buildings opened in 1999 including Fire Station #62 in the Butterfield area, and an expansion of the Civic Center. In 2000, the City’s first Post Office and the McCoy Equestrian & Recreation Center opened, followed by Chino Hills High School and the McCoy barn in 2001.

A DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE Chino Hills was earning national accolades, appearing on Money Magazine’s “Best Places in the West” list (2004) and ranking #69 on its “Top 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S.A. (2005). Shovels were lined up to break ground for the long-awaited permanent City Hall and Government Center in 2006. The center and The Shoppes created a “downtown” for Chino Hills with a mix of civic and retail uses. The new Library, three times the size of the original, opened in early 2009. The quality of life in Chino Hills has always made it a desirable place to live, and during the City’s first 25 years, the population doubled from 42,000 to 80,000. 7

THE MAYOR OF CHINO

The City of Chino is a diverse, beautiful, and inviting community, home to just over 84,000 residents who enjoy a rich balance of retail opportunities, dining establishments, and a variety of services without ever leaving the boundaries of Chino. Offering a rich blend of housing styles and award-winning special events and recreational programming, Chino prides itself in being a close-knit community, where generations of families reside and continue to raise their children. The City strives to offer dynamic programing and events to its residents and community members all year long. With over 100 recreation classes available at any given time, there is something available for everyone from line dancing, to certified loan signing to beginning guitar. We offer a robust selection of recreation classes at any one of our six community centers and facilities. Chino recognizes that a healthy community is a happy community! The City offers several opportunities to stay active through our youth and adult sports program and learn about healthy tips through our Healthy Chino initiative. Ruben S. Ayala Park is the City’s most well-known and largest park, sprawling across 140 acres in the heart of the City and hosts many sports tournaments from Pop Warner, AYSO and girls fastpitch to name a few. Chino is home to 38 parks on over 255 acres of dedicated park space offering numerous sports fields, picnic and BBQ areas, walking paths, playgrounds, batting cages, a splash pad, and much more. The Community Gardens offer residents an opportunity to rent plots to grow their own produce and take workshops on gardening and healthy cooking. Chino has a small-town charm, we are a place where people feel welcomed, neighbors help one another, and groups come together to meet the community needs. We see our community rally together every year at the Relay for Life, one of the biggest events of its kind in Southern California. Community members, local businesses and organizations all come together for 24 hours to fundraise in the fight against cancer. Our community greatly benefits from numerous community partnerships that allow community- based organizations to combine resources and maximize community benefits, such as, the Healthy Chino Coalition and the Focus on Youth Collaborative. One such partnership with local education leaders led to the construction of the Chaffey College Chino Campus where residents and members of the local community can earn a degree without leaving Chino. Chino is a great place for entrepreneurs, growing businesses, manufacturing and commercial developments. With an emphasis on cultivating value-based relationships, the City is poised for the future. HISTORYof the

CITY OF CHINO

Chino’s motto, “Where Everything Grows,” originally referred to the community’s agricultural roots. Now, the motto refers to the growth in families, business, and the City’s strong sense of community. Today, Chino is a well-established residential and commercial area, with beautiful neighborhoods, diverse demographics, irresistible hometown charm, and a rich commercial, industrial, and manufacturing mix. Encompassing nearly 31 miles, Chino is home to over 255 acres of dedicated park space, providing residents with community and neighborhood parks, trails and facilities, along with a host of recreational opportunities. The City provides a robust variety of programs and events suited for all ages. EARLY YEARS In 1841 much of the land that now makes up the City of Chino was granted to Don Antonio Lugo by a Mexican Grant called the “Santa Ana del Chino.” During the California Gold Rush, this area, known then as Rancho Santa Ana del Chino, was a popular stop for travelers, and in the mining fury, coal was discovered. In 1881 Richard Gird became the next owner of the Rancho. Mr. Gird experimented with different crops and found much success in sugar beets, eventually opening a Sugar Beet factory and shipping over 12,000 tons of granulated sugar each season.

AGRICULTURAL BEGINNINGS The Rancho and the area surrounding it, was located at the foot of an alluvial plain with fertile topsoil making it an agricultural mecca from the 1890s through mid 20th century. At the time, Chino produced and exported sweet corn, peaches, walnuts, tomatoes and strawberries. The Sugar beet was the most significant part of the economy in the early 1900s and brought incorporation to the city in 1910. Chino’s official seal features an overflowing cornucopia as a nod to Chino’s agricultural roots. DAIRY INDUSTRY The dairy industry boomed from the 1950s through the 1980s, with dairy-friendly zoning in the southwest corner of San Bernardino County the Chino Valley become the cornerstone of the industry. Chino’s large, highly efficient dairies made it the largest milk-producing community in the nation’s largest milk-producing state.

CHINO TODAY In the 1970s, Chino began to develop into a small suburban city, forming the western anchor of the Inland Empire region. Since then, Chino has continued on this path and has made it a priority to ensure a steady and balanced growth.

In 2010, the City of Chino celebrated its 100th birthday since incorporating in 1910 and commemorated the community’s rich history with a year-long celebration, enjoyed by residents and members of the business community.
