Even if you don’t save every issue of American Coin-Op (perish the thought!), make a point to set this particular issue aside. Keep it close to your phone or computer. You’ll thank me later.
Our annual Buyer’s Guide is the definitive resource for boosting your purchasing power by connecting you with the leading vendors serving the self-service laundry industry. We list nearly 150 companies this time around.
We provide everything you need to know—local and toll free phone numbers, websites and e-mail addresses to contact a vendor. There’s even a principal contact person listed, if one was provided to us.
The Buyer’s Guide begins on page 10 with the Products Directory—categorical listings of companies that manufacture or supply equipment, signage, furniture and more, or provide unique services to self-service laundry owners or investors. Once you’ve identified vendors that interest you, you can learn where to contact them in the Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory starting on page 20. When you call on a vendor, let them know that American Coin-Op sent you.

54% OF STORE OWNERS LOG AT LEAST 20 HOURS ON-SITE
If you own a coin laundry, how much time do you put in there? The majority of store owners polled in February’s American Coin-Op Your Views survey spend more than 20 hours at their stores each week.
Roughly 31% of respondents say they spend 21 to 40 hours per week at their store(s), while 13.0% spend 51 to 60 hours there per week. Smaller shares spend 41 to 50 hours per week (7.4%) or more than 60 hours per week (1.9%).
An estimated 46% of coin laundry store owners are spending 20 hours or less per week at their businesses.
No one responding to the survey said they spend no time at their store.
The vast majority of respondents (88.9%) say they spend part of their weekends on business-related tasks; 75.9% spend nights; 51.9% spend holidays; 46.3% spend days off; and 31.5% spend part of their family time tending to their store(s).
More than half of respondents (52.8%) believe that their presence at their store(s) improves business, while 11.3% disagreed. The remaining 35.8% were unsure if their presence there improves business.
Roughly 55% of store owners reported having spent “a week or more away from [their] stores,” while 45.3% have not.
To help them tend to their store(s), two-thirds of respondents employ attendants or managers.
The vast majority of respondents use the aid of surveillance equipment to oversee their store(s): approximately 77% have such equipment installed. Of those that use surveillance equipment, 69.8% say they are able to monitor store activity remotely.
While American Coin-Op’s Your Views survey presents a snapshot of the audience’s viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific. Subscribers to American Coin-Op e-mails are invited to participate anonymously in an industry survey each month.
The entire American Coin-Op audience is encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define owner/operator opinions and industry trends.

We are pleased to present the 32nd annual American Coin-Op Buyer’s Guide, published exclusively for selfservice laundry operators.
To use the guide, simply look up the name of a product or service in the Products Directory and then turn to the Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory beginning on page 20 for information on how to contact the various companies that make the specific product or provide the service.
In some cases, the Manufacturers Directory will also contain additional coin laundry-related products or services not listed in the Product Directory.
The Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory contains addresses, telephone numbers and, in most cases, websites and e-mail addresses for the companies. When you call on one of them, let them know you read about them in American Coin-Op.
Keep this issue handy, because the next Buyer’s Guide print edition won’t be published until next year.

an outsider’s view
employee development takes time, is worth it
You hire a new staffer and put her through your training program. The new member of your staff is OK, yes, but she’s slow, and she gets ruffled easily. And she comes in 10 or 15 minutes late at least twice a week. Should you fire her? You could. Then you go through the same process all over again. Maybe a better option would be to see if you can correct her bad habits. Work with her, mold her behavior, correct her errors, and maybe she’ll become an excellent worker. In corporate speak, this is called “employee development.” Unfortunately, most laundry owners accept what they get after a brief training period.
Of course, employee development takes work. Every day, offer feedback, make comments, give instruction. Do role-playing exercises. Observe progress. Keep a notebook of comments to ascertain what kind of advancement you are making.
Let’s take a look at a few specific problems, and I’ll suggest how you might handle them.
LATECOMER
The staffer comes in 10-15 minutes late twice a week. The first thing you must do is impart the importance of being at work on time. It could be opening up, relieving a staffer, taking over a new shift, or pushing out the work in a timely fashion (and that means getting there on time). Nothing works like a visual explanation.
Portray a customer coming to the store at exactly 8 a.m. and finding the shop closed. Pitch a fit in front of the store. Stomp around. Swear. Show the anger and frustration. Then have the staffer open the front door. Walk in, sour-faced, as if one false word from the attendant will make you explode. Point out that this is the normal reaction of half the paying customers, and rightfully so, because they get up early and they expect the shop to come through with its half of the bargain.
Alternately, pretend that you’re a worker who had to stay late because the next staffer walked in 10 minutes late. Yell at the staffer, reject excuses, kick cans around. Indicate that you had somewhere to go tonight and will now be a half-hour late.
By witnessing these dramatic examples, the staffer will get the idea that she can’t be late.
In addition, provide helping aids. Offer to phone the employee for the first two months of her trial period, or to buy her a good alarm clock. Or give the worker preferential shift treatment and see how she does, or suggest she advance all her clocks by a half-hour. One of these devices will cure the problem, if the individual wants to overcome her weakness. Point out that lateness is a curable bad habit, and with some effort and focus, it will be a thing of the past.
MAKE NO MISTAKE
What about a staffer who makes a lot of mistakes counting poundage and making change? Maybe he’s dyslexic, but is loathe to admit it. For starters, confront the staffer with customer complaints that point to him. Point out that such errors are symptomatic of a loose, inefficient company and send a bad message to your customers. State that customers will be less kind to machinery, personnel and rules when they think that the company is not in control. Establish that you insist on running a tight operation and he will have to improve to continue being your employee.
Then give him tools to improve. Teach him to count money like bank clerks do: they add two or three piles, then compute the sum of the piles, then double-check by adding each bill. If he is dyslexic, provide clues as to how he can distinguish ones from fives from tens from twenties. Look for the curling bottom of the $5 bill. Recognize the picture of Andrew Jackson on the $20, looking like an older Fonz.
Review with him the counting of poundage. Perhaps apply a color-coded marker on the most common amounts—10, 15 and 20 pounds—to help his counting. Role-play so that you are sure he understands what you

an outsider’s view
are saying. After a while, he will improve his counting and numerical skills. It’s simply a matter of determination and practice.
SLOWPOKE
What if the staffer is excessively slow? First, convince the worker why being speedy is important. Point out that a brisk, energetic attendant gives the customer confidence that the operation is competent. Then show how to do tasks more speedily.
Try some role-playing again, with you portraying a customer annoyed that the machine is malfunctioning. Call the attendant over. On the phone, she holds up her finger, indicating that you should wait a minute. Get increasingly irritated. When she finally arrives, yell at her. State that a customer in trouble is more important than taking a personal phone call. If the staffer puts up a fight, shout her down. Don’t let up. Show her your anger. Be angry that the staffer can’t fix the machine quickly. Point out that customers generally allow more time to workers who hustle than those who move slowly.
Give wash/dry/fold examples—fast and slow. Explain that processing wash/dry/fold poundage speedily can make a difference
between making a profit and incurring a loss. Provide hints to hasten processing—folding shirts by holding them up between chin and chest and using both hands to fold; timing drying so that loads come out in a sequenced time frame; matching socks by combining obvious matches and spreading out remainders—all the skills you’ve acquired in a lifetime in the laundry business.
Of course, this isn’t a one-time lesson. Development is ongoing. Periodically watch the staffer to make sure he or she is doing it the right way. Give more pointers. Offer constructive criticism. At the same time, pay a compliment when a task is performed well.
The principle that an individual can be coached into becoming a better worker is true for maybe two-thirds of all individuals. If you determine that an individual is part of the 33% minority, and you are having no luck with development, then a quick dismissal is your only answer.
Follow these suggestions and soon you’ll be developing your employees into productive, business-building workers. n

Protecting Customer Data
Don’t get penalized for credit card security breaches
By Phillip M. Perry
Credit cards: What would today’s retailer do without them? If you’re like most merchants, you’ve found that the ubiquitous plastic card has become the default transaction tool for purchases large and small.
There’s hidden danger, though, in being too cavalier about just how your business handles card transactions. The recent data breach at Target—affecting some 70 million to 110 million people—drives home the need for every retailer to be vigilant in protecting customer data.
You can be hit with costly fines and penalties if you ignore increasingly tight regulations governing the protection of credit card data—especially if your violation leads to an actual release of customer information into criminal hands.
“Merchants who store, process or transmit credit card data need to understand they have a responsibility to protect that data,” says Mark Burnette, a partner with LBMC Security & Risk Services, a Nashville-based consulting firm.
COSTLY FINES
So who makes the rules when it comes to protecting customer data? The big boss here is the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council, Wakefield, Mass. This assemblage of credit card associations has been steadily tightening the reins on runaway data by releasing regulations in the form of official standards. The latest iteration, dubbed PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), further strengthens the procedures that must be instituted by merchants by the
end of 2014. (For details, see the sidebar on page 42.)
Fail to follow the PCI compliance rules and you may well be targeted for damages by your “acquirer”—the bank which provided you with your merchant account. Read your contract closely and you’ll find that the bank has the power of the purse: “If the acquirer finds that you have been consistently noncompliant, fines can be assessed,” says Burnette. “And an actual breach of data can lead to even higher penalties.”
The extent of monetary damages depends on the size of the merchant, the size of the
breach and the number of cards involved. Penalties have ranged from $10,000 into the six figures and more.
Not to be underestimated, either, is the costly hit a publicized breach can have on a merchant’s reputation. Many consumers will be reluctant to visit an establishment where a breach has occurred.
But perhaps the greatest motivation for towing the line is the threat of losing the merchant account itself. “The card association may take away your ability to accept credit cards at all,” says Burnette. “That can be extremely costly to any merchant.”

rule that says, ‘If
– Mark Burnette, partner, LBMC Security & Risk Services
PROTECT YOURSELF
While failure to follow mandated dataprotection guidelines is foolish, the good news in all this is that you can take positive steps to minimize risk.
Start by drawing up a statement of standard operating procedures (SOP) for everyone in your organization.
“Make sure you have a clear written policy about how to handle credit cards,” says Burnette. “And make sure your employees have been educated on the policy. Bring up the topic regularly in your staff meetings.”
Your SOP must address the critical need of keeping sensitive customer numbers under wraps. “Where the merchant is most vulnerable is in the accidental mishandling of card information,” says Burnette. “Suppose, for example, an employee takes an order over the phone, jots down the card number on a piece of paper, and then later drops the paper into the trash instead of a shredder. That violates the PCI and is bad business practice.”
Another good rule is to keep the credit card in the hands of the customer as long as possible. “Employees should quickly process the card and return it,” says Burnette. “This will keep the card from being accidentally grabbed (or from having its number written down) by someone else.”
The right hardware can be as important as the right procedures. Have you been using the same POS equipment for many years? It may be time to replace it. “Some retailers still have legacy equipment that they don’t even realize is capturing cardholder information that can be compromised,” says Paul Rianda, an attorney in Irvine, Calif. “In contrast, if merchants use newer equipment, and use it correctly, there should be no way to lose cardholder information.”
Computer systems face special challenges: “You need to establish rules about passwords and about access to the computer system,” says Burnette.
“Each employee should have a unique security code which they are forbidden to share with other employees or even with managers. The passwords should allow access only to those sections of the database required to do an individual’s job.”
You should use only hardware and software that has been approved by the PCI Security Standards Council (approved vendor lists are available at www.pcisecurity standards.org). Make sure you are using a firewall, and that your wireless router is password-protected and uses encryption. And change the default hardware passwords to complex ones.
THIRD PARTY
As the world of electronic commerce has become more complicated, regulations become more demanding. “There are over 255 individual requirements for PCI compliance,” says Burnette. “All of them have to be met. There is no wiggle room.”
Little wonder that merchants are sidestepping the requisite procedures by farming everything out to a third-party organization
■ Get More Help
such as an ISO. “Offloading responsibility to a third party is a good solution,” says Don Hartley, a consultant with Savannah, Georgia-based Tata Consultancy Services.
Don’t get trapped, though, by a false sense of security. You can outsource the operational duties for carrying out PCI compliance, but you cannot outsource your responsibility for protecting customer information. If something goes wrong, you will be assumed guilty.
To protect yourself from fines and penalties, make sure your contract specifies the third party’s responsibilities for setting up and maintaining computer systems that comply with PCI standards. You should also ask the third party to provide an annual “PCI report on Compliance” signed off by a qualified security assessor (QSA). This should be done once a year. Both these steps will help protect you if the third party violates regulations.
NEED TO KNOW
Many of the protective steps suggested here derive from a broader maxim near and dear to the hearts of security people everywhere: Retain only the information you need.
Retailers who fail to protect their customers’ credit card data are playing with fire. “If you make a mistake, you may incur penalties of hundreds of thousands of dollars—or even millions depending on how many cards were compromised,” says Paul Rianda, an attorney in Irvine, Calif.
The primary article presents some common operational guidelines to protect yourself from loss. Additionally, seek the guidance of your attorney, your bank and your security adviser.
You can find more information about PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliance from the website of the PCI Security Standards Council, at www.pcisecurity standards.org. Click the “For Merchants” button and read the helpful articles, including those prepared specifically for small businesses. Click on the “Information Supplements” link to access the latest iteration of the PCI Data Security Standards, PCI DSS v3.0.
“Follow the rule that says, ‘If you do not need customer information, you should not keep it,’” says Burnette.
Education is the first step to safety. Many smaller merchants are not aware of the duty to protect customer data, nor of the continually morphing rules.
Ignorance of the law, as always, is no excuse. Taking the basic steps in this article will reduce your risk considerably.
Says Burnette: “Make sure you have a written policy in place, train your employees properly, and make sure your computer system is PCIcompliant.” ■

DistRibutoR RAises MoRe tHAn $40,000 foR fAllen HeRoes funD Distributor Western State Design (WSD) recently completed a six-month fundraising campaign for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF), donating $40,700 to the organization, the company reports.
IFHF, which supports the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, is building a series of nine treatment facilities at military installations around the country for wounded service personnel diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress as a result of their service, according to WSD.
sAMCo HiRes nolAn As Coo, ADDs Yongue to stAff Southern Automatic Machinery Co. (SAMCO) has hired Brett Nolan as its chief operating officer, the equipment distributor reports. He is responsible for day-to-day operations, with a focus on updating and modernizing systems and procedures.
Nolan previously worked for SAMCO as a service technician and sales representative. He returns after a year working as the regional manager for a small chain of Laundromats in Savannah, Ga.
SAMCO also added Nicole Yongue to its parts department staff. Yongue previously worked for SAMCO in the parts department, and has also spent the past year in Savannah working as one of Nolan’s store managers.
speeD Queen unveils new website witH investoR foCus Speed Queen has launched a new website for potential investors interested in the self-service laundry industry, www.investin laundromats.com, to showcase Laundromats as “an underrecognized, yet viable and smart business investment,” the company reports.
“The interactive website is designed to educate people looking for a good investment about the profitability potential of Laundromats compared to other investments, and the benefits of partnering with Speed Queen to open one,” the company says.
“WSD and Dexter Laundry are proud to join others in support of this independent not-for-profit organization dedicated to severely wounded veterans,” says Thomas Marks, executive vice president of WSD. “This year, WSD pledged a donation to IFHF from each Dexter coin-op washer and dryer sold from July until the end of the year 2013, and we’re honored to be able to deliver this check to them to help IFHF continue their service to our veterans.”
Dexter Laundry Vice President Craig Kirchner, whose company also participated in the fundraising campaign, echoed Marks’ sentiment, saying he is proud to support IFHF.
WSD set aside one dollar per pound of rated capacity for all Dexter Laundry coin-op washers and dryers sold during the campaign, then sold washers and dryers totaling more than 40,000 pounds of rated capacity to more than 100 coin-ops across seven states, according to the company.
“We chose to base our sales fundraiser on Dexter coin-op machines because they’re an employee-owned company and all of their machines are made right here in the United States. What better way to support our veterans,” says Marks. “We also have a proven track record in selling Dexter coin-op laundry equipment, so we knew we could maximize our fundraising goals by selling their equipment.”
“Our goal for the website is to provide individuals interested in opening a small business with all the information they need to make an informed decision,” says Dan Bowe, Speed Queen national sales manager. “With an average return on investment up to 35%, investing in Laundromats proves to be nearly recessionproof because the business is not strongly tied to the fluctuating economy—clean laundry is a necessity.”
In addition to showcasing multimedia case studies to help new investors better understand the benefits of opening a Laundromat, the site also highlights the benefits of choosing laundry over other potential investments, including franchises.
“With no franchise fee, minimal up-front costs and a notably high success rate, Laundromats outshine other opportunities,” the company says. “For example, Speed Queen estimates the start-up cost associated with a Laundromat to be around $300,000, where the cost associated with opening other franchises are shown to be over $1 million.”
The site also speaks directly to commercial real estate owners looking for new tenants.
“Laundromats provide real estate owners with a proven business that creates a destination for customers; offers a safe, clean family environment; is typically committed to long-term lease agreements; and offers great cross-marketing opportunities with neighboring stores,” Speed Queen says. n

Why did you choose an ESD system?
We obviously wanted a state-of-the-art card system that would give us a competitive advantage, but we also wanted a company that was as celebrated for their service and customer care as they are for their most successful products. ESD is the gold standard in the industry because of superior products, well-trained personnel, and outstanding customer service.
Brian Holland, Partner
In the purest sense of the word, we are “newbies” to the vended laundry arena - excited to be here, eager to play, hungry for knowledge, and humble enough to learn from anyone who is willing to offer guidance. At the same time we have seasoned experience and battle scars from both corporate- and small business experiences in unrelated industries. While the industries are completely unrelated, the foundational business principals that they taught - Customer Service, Finance, Marketing, Sales, People Management, HR, Operations - are all directly relevant. Maybe we’re newbies with a little seasoning.
The Laundry Café is located in a fantastic destination location, but it is in a an internet challenged area of the city. ESD exceeded all our expectations by creating a wireless network even though none of the major internet providers were available. ESD has an internal team of IT professionals who customized our system to meet our needs, from design to installation.
Is there anything that surprised you about the ESD system?
I was pleasantly surprised at the managerial utilities. The reports are thorough, comprehensive, and seamlessly integrated. I can produce performance reports that track nearly everything. These are great for tracking your business and making informed adjustments for improvement.
Contact your local ESD distributor or ESD sales representative for more information.
