More than half of distributors polled say business—including sales of newly constructed self-service laundries and replacement business— was better in 2013 compared to 2012. And when it comes to sales projections, the majority of distributors surveyed believe 2014 sales will surpass those of 2013’s.

2014 Distributors survey

It was good to read in Carlo Calma’s analysis of this year’s American Coin-Op Distributor Survey results that nearly 88% of distributors polled said their 2013 business was as good or better than the year before.

To my mind, that fact alone means plenty of new stores are being constructed and plenty of parts and equipment in existing stores are being replaced. In short: the coin laundry business keeps on churning.

We’ve compiled plenty of meaningful statistics for you, including replacement business, new-laundry construction, equipment mix, store sizing and more. I found the “average newly constructed store” snapshot to be telling, as Carlo runs down the number of top loaders, front loaders and dryer pockets, as well as square footage, in the average store for the past six years.

MAJORITY OF OWNERS REPORT EXTRA-PROFIT CENTER SUCCESS

When it comes to offering “traditional” extra-profit centers, the vast majority (93.5%) of coin laundry owners and operators provide vending machines (food/drink or supplies), according to results of September’s American Coin-Op Your Views survey.

Roughly 67% of respondents have delved into drop-off service, and 37% say they offer video games to customers. While a small percentage (2.2%) say they do not offer any of these, 34.8% of overall respondents offer all three “traditional” extraprofit centers.

Other ancillary services store owners say they offer include alterations, lottery sales and tanning beds, among others.

Close to 40% say they don’t have “enough space” to run an extra-profit center, while a quarter of respondents “don’t have employees to run the service.” Roughly 22% say they don’t see the customer demand for anything else, while 5.6% say they don’t have the funding to start another service. Close to 3% say that they don’t want it to “interfere” with their basic services. Roughly 6% cited “other” reasons for not offering extra-profit centers.

Roughly 71% of respondents say that offering an extra-profit center at their store has been a success, while 29.5% say they’ve offered an ancillary service they “ultimately deemed a failure.”

“[I] offered coffee,” says one respondent. “Competitor pricing and brand recognition was the cause of the failure.”

Some respondents say that taking on commercial work is going to be “the next big extra-profit center,” with 28.9% of respondents believing this is the case.

While 17.8% of respondents believe otherwise, more than half (53.3%) are not sure if taking on commercial work is going to trend in the industry.

One respondent says that, in a perfect world, he/she would like to operate a dog wash as an extra-profit center, while another is interested in establishing an “Internet cafe with light fare and various device accessories.”

Distributor business and industry outlook is on a continued upswing, as the majority polled in American Coin-Op’s annual Distributor Survey enjoyed better business than the previous year, and is expecting overall 2014 sales to surpass those of 2013.

More than half of distributors (53.7%) say that business—including sales of newly constructed self-service laundries and replacement business—was better in 2013 compared to 2012. When it comes to sales projections, the same percentage believes 2014 sales will be better than 2013’s.

Roughly 12% of respondents say 2013

said business was better in 2013 than 2012. This is a slight dip in business performance, however, compared to results of the 2013 Distributor Survey, in which 60% of respondents said 2012 business was better than 2011’s. In the 2012 survey, 55% said business was better in 2011 than 2010.

Those who experienced better business in 2013 attributed their performance to a growing or recovering economy in their area, while others said it was because of their investment in better advertising, or an increase in market demand among coin laundry owners, among other reasons.

Those whose business suffered in 2013 said factors like restrictive financing, slow economic growth, and “lack of quality applicants,” as one distributor explained, took a toll on their business.

REPLACEMENT BUSINESS

Business performance in this area has remained virtually unchanged compared to previous years. In 2013, roughly 54% of respondents built or supplied equipment to three or fewer new laundries, down slightly from 55% in 2012.

The percentage was 54% in the 2012 survey for 2011 business, and 56% in the 2011 survey for 2010 business.

Every distributor listed in the American Coin-Op Distributors Directory was invited to participate in this year’s unscientific survey, which charts 2013 business and makes comparisons to previous years.

2013 BUSINESS

This year, 53.7% of distributors polled

More than half (52.5%) of distributors say replacement business was up in 2013 compared to 2012. This is a slight improvement over the 51.4% who saw their replacement business increase in 2012 from 2011. This is all compared to 52.6% who saw replacement business increase in 2011 from 2010, and 39.3% who saw an increase from 2009 to 2010.

An even 20% of respondents saw 2013 replacement business decrease from 2012, while 27.5% say it remained unchanged.

NEW-LAUNDRY CONSTRUCTION

Distributors were also asked to weigh in on how many new laundries they built and/or to which they supplied equipment in 2013.

The actual number of new laundries distributors were involved with in some fashion in 2013 ran the gamut from just a single store to one respondent reporting his/her company dealt with 150 stores. Below is a rundown of the most popular answers from this year’s survey:

Roughly 43.9% of distributors surveyed said their new-construction total for 2013 remained unchanged from 2012. This is a sizable increase compared to last year, during which 23.5% said new-construction totals remained the same for 2012 business.

About 39% said their new-construction total was higher in 2013 than in 2012, which is comparable to previous years’ surveys.

Approximately 41% said their newconstruction business was up in 2012; approximately 39% said it was up in 2011; and about 41% saw a business increase in 2010.

Newly constructed coin laundries in 2013 have an average of 32.8 dryer pockets. This figure trends with previous averages, up only slightly from 2012’s average of 30.8 and down slightly from the average of 34.1 dryer pockets in 2011.

EQUIPMENT MIX

Perfecting the right equipment mix is critical for a coin laundry store’s success. Wondering what equipment more and more store owners and distributors are installing in coin laundries across the country? Here is a quick analysis on trends, according to this year’s survey.

Roughly 63% of new stores in 2013 had at least one top loader, a notable jump from 2012’s figure of 45%, and almost comparable to 58% of new stores in 2011.

Coin laundries newly constructed in 2013 have an average of 4.5 top loaders, compared to an average of 3.4 per new store in 2012. (These figures factor in stores with no top loaders).

Breaking it down, below are the most popular numbers of top loaders installed in new stores in 2013:

When it comes to front loaders, newly constructed coin laundries in 2013 have an average of 26.6 front loaders, a decrease from 2012’s average of 28.0 and 2011’s average of 30.0.

The most common number of front loaders installed in newly constructed laundries in 2013 was:

2010: 3.8 top loaders, 26.9 front loaders, 32.1 dryer pockets, and 2,663 square feet

2009: 5.7 top loaders, 27.3 front loaders, 32.6 dryer pockets, and 2,712 square feet

2008: 5.8 top loaders, 27.8 front loaders, 32 dryer pockets, and 2,743 square feet

Are coin laundries taking up more real estate, or are store owners opting for more manageable, smaller stores?

Among the most popular store sizes, in square feet, reported in this year’s survey were 1,500; 2,500; 2,800; and 3,500.

An even 25% of the stores constructed in 2013 are 2,000 square feet or less, while 59% are between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet. Both figures are slight increases over 2012 results of 19% (2,000 square feet or less) and 52% (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet).

The largest newly constructed laundry built last year covers 10,000 square feet, while the smallest is 700 square feet.

The average newly constructed coin laundry store for 2013 covers 2,663 square feet. Prior averages include 2,754 square feet (2012); 2,721 square feet (2011); 2,663 square feet (2010); 2,712 square feet (2009); and 2,743 square feet (2008).

The average selling price of a newly constructed store—not including the cost of land and building—in 2013 was $368,214, compared to 2012’s average of $386,591 and 2011’s $366,000.

So, how do these numbers from 2013 compare to distributor business performance in years past? Here is a quick recap of facts and figures.

Distributors were also asked if their company brokers self-service laundries. Roughly 31% of respondents in this year’s survey say they do, compared to 29% in the 2013 survey. Figures on operating a route laundry have remained virtually unchanged, with 38.1% of respondents in this year’s survey saying they do, compared to 38% in the 2013 survey.

The share of distributors hosting an equipment show in the upcoming year has dropped slightly, as 54.8% say they have such plans for 2015, down from 62% in last year’s survey (check www.american coinop.com/coinop-events for announcements of upcoming events).

“My wife and I own a 60 machine Independent Laundromat in Bourbonnais, IL. We recently updated many of the washers and all our dryers. With today’s available technology, customers are always looking for the convenience of being able to get in and out of the store more quickly, so we now offer an ATM, credit card acceptance at our counter and still maintain a coin/cash system. When we started our research on how to improve our coin drops to accept dollar coins as well as quarters one name kept coming to the top of the search, IMONEX. Distributor Aaxon Laundry Systems has promoted Tim Battaglia to accounting systems manager, and added Brittany D’Annunzio to its staff as marketing coordinator.

Battaglia graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Prior to his work with Aaxon, he worked for Cargo Transportation Services. At Aaxon, Battaglia will “improve interdepartmental functions,” according to Gary Prindible, controller at Aaxon.

The EJ Thomas Co., New Albany, Ohio, has acquired the laundry and drycleaning supply business of M&L Supply Co., Akron, Ohio, the companies reported recently.

M&L, which has served customers with a full line of laundry and drycleaning supplies since 1937, will continue to offer equipment sales, parts and repairs.

Terms of the acquisition were not announced.

WASH Multifamily Laundry Systems (WASH) reports that it has acquired American Meter & Appliance, allowing the expansion of WASH to the Pacific Northwest region: Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho and Montana.

“The acquisition of American Meter & Appliance gives WASH an opportunity to re-enter the market in the Pacific Northwest,” says Adam Coffey, WASH president/CEO. “We already have a deep familiarity with the marketplace, and with this added density, we can maximize synergies with our existing branch office in Vancouver, Canada.”

Both of the companies provide laundry services to the multifamily housing market, having a combined 123 years of experience, according to WASH.
