‘FIRST FROM THE FLOOR’

I’m writing this column just days after returning from Clean 2015. Needless to say, the past few days have been quite a whirlwind.

This year’s show was truly packed with many things to do—from venturing up and down the countless aisles at the Georgia World Congress Center to see the brand-new, shiny equipment on display, to networking with various professionals from our industry, to attending the various educational sessions hosted by the Coin Laundry Association.

I also had the pleasure of meeting several of you at the show. I truly value your feedback on our magazine, and look forward to hearing about your Clean Show experience.

Clean Show Makes to Atlanta

Unofficial total attendance exceeds 11,000; show will return here in 2021

It’s another show in the books, as the 2015 edition of the Clean Show—known formally as the World Educational Congress for Laundering and Drycleaning—officially wrapped here Sunday, April 19. Despite the rain and unseasonably cool temperatures, things were lively and heating up on the show floor at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC).

Attendees trekked up and down aisle upon aisle to visit the myriad of equipment manufacturers, suppliers and service providers and their exhibitions during the show’s four-day schedule.

Many exhibitors say they were “pleasantly surprised” by the turnout, as some were especially busy networking with attendees well into the late afternoon during the first two days of the show.

The event was once again sponsored

by the Association for Linen Management (ALM), Coin Laundry Association (CLA), Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), Textile Care Allied Trades Association (TCATA), and the Textile Rental Services Association of America (TRSA).

In addition to viewing the countless exhibitions on display, attendees could also choose from more than 30 hours of educational sessions, hosted by several of the show’s sponsors, as well as the American

Attendees turned out in droves for several of these educational sessions, which were hosted in Hall B of the GWCC, as well as in the “Sponsor Education Theater” on the show floor.

Brian Wallace, Clean 2015 chairman and CLA president and CEO, acknowledged the show’s overall healthy turnout.

“We’re very, very pleased with everything that we’ve come across, in terms of the traffic, attendance at our sessions [and] traffic in the hall,” says Wallace. “It’s been a very, very positive feedback.”

The official attendance tally was unavailable at the time this issue went to press. However, attendance was already up about 5% as of the show’s second day, compared to the 2013 show in New Orleans, according to Wallace.

Clean Show was 189,300 net square feet, according to Wallace, with a total of 441 companies exhibiting.

The Clean Show will convene again in 2017, with its eyes locked on Las Vegas for a four-day engagement, June 26-29.

The Clean Executive Committee also established the dates of the 2019 show, which will make a return to New Orleans, June 20-23.

But what of Atlanta? Will it be another 28 years until the Clean Show makes another visit?

“Part of the partnership conversation agreement that we reached [with Atlanta city officials] was that we were anxious to come back to Atlanta, test drive it and see what kind of show we’re going to have,” says Wallace, who explains that the committee established “performance targets” that the city had to meet in order to trigger a return engagement.

These “performance targets,” Wallace explains, included metrics such as attendance and net square feet sold, and comparing these numbers to the last three shows.

“We’re very happy to announce that we have reached those numbers [and] have reached those performance expectations and it’s our intent to return to Atlanta in the year 2021,” says Wallace.

The 2021 edition of the Clean Show is tentatively scheduled for June 10-13.

“You could see why we would do that, and can understand that the folks here in Atlanta wanted an opportunity to prove themselves, and they’ve certainly done that,” he adds.

Eastern Funding LLC reports it has promoted Stephen Gramaglia from executive vice president to chief operating officer.

“Stephen’s experience in the specialty finance industry extends back to when he was a 20-year-old junior in college. Ever since he joined Eastern 16 years ago, he’s been a key member of our management team, and he’s played a vital role in our growth and commercial financing success,” says Michael Fanger, Eastern Funding founder and president.

John L. Corley Inc. reports it is expanding its NIE Insurance program to serve coin laundries and dry cleaners in 14 additional states, bringing the total number of states served to 48.

Corley can now offer this insurance coverage through a new appointment with The Hartford, which reports that it insures more than 1 million small businesses.

“This is good news for dry cleaners and coin laundries across the country,” says Greg Mouldon, Corley’s president. “We are proud to work with The Hartford. They are a leader in smallbusiness insurance.”

Corley can now place insurance for small businesses across the country, except in Alaska and Hawaii.

Corley Inc. is the attorney-in-fact for National Fire Indemnity Exchange and operates under the trade name “NIE Insurance.” National Fire Indemnity Exchange is a reciprocal insurance exchange founded in 1915 to serve dry cleaners. It is owned entirely by its policyholder dry cleaners and coin laundries, and governed by an elected committee of seven of those policyholders.

The equipment on board was the Swedish-made Wascator frontload stainless steel washers. Bernard obtained the sales and marketing rights for Wascator machines in North America, marketing the equipment with the name “Wascomat.”

Electrolux, which later purchased the Wascator, credits Wascomat’s growth in North America to the marketing efforts of Bernard and his team, according to Laundrylux.

AlliAnCE lAundrY’s CustoMEr sErviCE progrAM EArns honor Alliance Laundry Systems recently earned a Silver Stevie® Award in the ninth annual Stevie Awards for Sales & Customer Service.

Alliance was recognized for the recent achievements of its customer service program, Customer One, receiving silver accolades in the “Customer Service Department of the Year — all other industries” category. It was one of 12 international companies nominated.
