The upswing in distributor business performance appears to be continuing, according to results of this year’s American Coin-Op Distributors Survey. Roughly 68% of distributors polled say their business—including sales of newly constructed self-service laundries and replacement business— was better in 2014 compared to 2013. And when it comes to sales projections, an even larger percentage (70%) believes 2015 sales will surpass those of 2014’s.

CLEANLINESS CARRIES MOST WEIGHT IN SUCCESS FORMULA

Owner/employee friendliness, equipment mix/ numbers also seen as important contributors

When weighing factors that can contribute to a coin-op laundry’s success, the vast majority of store owners (94.4%) surveyed in September’s American Coin-Op Your Views survey say store cleanliness is top of mind when it comes to having a “great” laundry.

Next to cleanliness, operators attribute owner/employee friendliness (83.3%) and equipment (mix/numbers) (72.2%) to store success (respondents could choose any or all from among a list of six answers). Also receiving modest support were amenities, such as free Wi-Fi, vending machines, etc. (44.4%).

Garnering the least support for being the dominant aspect of a “great” laundry were “other,” such as lighting or location (22.2%), and store size (16.7%).

When asked what factor is most “overrated” when judging a store, the top three features cited by respondents were store size (61.1%), amenities (55.6%) and equipment mix/number (22.2%). Other choices were cleanliness (16.7%), owner/employee friendliness (11.1%) and “other” (5.6%).

Compared to 10 years ago, the operational efficiency of today’s laundries is “far better” (36.8%) or “somewhat better” (47.4%), respondents say. The remaining 15.8% see efficiency as being unchanged; no one taking the survey believes operational efficiency is “somewhat worse” or “much worse” than that of a decade ago.

To improve their overall coin laundry business, respondents often draw from a variety of resources, including customer feedback (73.7%), trade publications (57.9%), distributor events (47.4%), industry trade shows (47.4%) and industry associations/groups (42.1%).

The upswing in distributor business appears to be continuing, as the majority polled in American Coin-Op’s annual Distributors Survey once again enjoyed better business than the previous year, and is expecting overall 2015 sales to outdistance those of 2014.

Roughly 68% of distributors polled say that business—including sales of newly constructed self-service laundries and replacement business—was better in 2014 compared to 2013. When it comes to sales projections, an even larger percentage (70%) believes 2015 sales will be better than 2014’s.

Roughly 10% of respondents (9.8%) say 2014 business was worse than 2013’s, while 21.9% say business has stayed the same.

Every distributor previously listed in the American Coin-Op Distributors Directory was invited to participate in this year’s unscientific survey, which charts 2014 business and makes comparisons to previous years.

2014 BUSINESS

This year, 68.3% of distributors polled said business was better in 2014 than 2013. That’s a significant bump in business performance, compared to results of the 2014 Distributor Survey, in which 53.7% of respondents said 2013 business was better than 2012. In the 2013 survey, 60% of respondents said 2012 business was better than 2011.

ness in 2014 attributed their performance to economic optimism, updated product design, population growth, store owners’ desire to replace outdated equipment, and a better overall business climate, among other reasons.

The minority whose business suffered in 2014 said factors like competition among distributors in their area, finding financially qualified investors, and a weak local economy took a toll on their business.

REPLACEMENT BUSINESS

Nearly three-quarters (73.2%) of distributors say their replacement business was up in 2014 compared to 2013. This is a vast improvement over the 52.5% who saw their replacement business increase in 2013 from 2012, the 51.4% who saw an increase in 2012 from 2011, and the 52.6% who saw an increase in 2011 from 2010.

Less than 10% of respondents (9.8%) saw 2014 replacement business decrease from that of 2013, while 17.1% say it remained unchanged.

NEW-LAUNDRY CONSTRUCTION

Distributors were asked to weigh in on how many new laundries they built and/ or to which they supplied equipment in 2014.

Like the other metrics, business performance in this area was on the rise, with 69.2% of respondents reporting they built or supplied equipment to three or fewer new laundries in 2014. This compares to approximately 54% in 2013, 55% in 2012, 54% in 2011 and 56% in 2010.

The actual number of new laundries distributors were involved with in some fashion in 2014 ranged from just a single store to one respondent reporting his/her company dealt with 67 stores.

Following is a rundown of the most popular answers from this year’s survey:

Roughly 48% of distributors surveyed said their new-construction total for 2014 was higher than the previous year. Comparing to previous surveys, approximately 39% said their new-construction business was up for 2013; roughly 41% said it was up for 2012; approximately 39% said it was up in 2011; and about 41% saw a business increase in 2010.

Approximately 38% of distributors surveyed said their new-construction total for 2014 remained unchanged from 2013. That compares to roughly 43.9% of distributors reporting no change in 2013 from 2012 and 23.5% reporting no change in 2012 from 2011.

the roughly 17% who reported lower new-construction totals in 2013 than in 2012. In the survey for 2012 business, 35.3% of distributors said new-construction totals were down from the previous year.

EQUIPMENT MIX

Perfecting the right equipment mix is critical for a coin laundry store’s success. Wondering what equipment more and more store owners and distributors are installing in coin laundries across the country? Here is a quick analysis on trends, according to this year’s survey.

Sixty percent of new stores in 2014 had at least one top loader, a slight decline from 2013’s figure of roughly 63%. Looking back further, the percentage of new stores with at least one top loader was 45% in 2012 and 58% in 2011.

Coin laundries newly built in 2014 have an average of 4.6 top loaders, compared to an average of 4.5 per new store in 2013 and 3.4 per new store in 2012. (These figures factor in stores with no top loaders.)

Breaking it down, following are the most popular numbers of top loaders installed in new stores in 2014:

3) 10

4) 4 and 8 (tie)

When it comes to front loaders, newly constructed coin laundries in 2014 have an average of 27.5 front loaders, a slight increase from 2013’s average of 26.6, but slightly behind the 28.0 average of 2012.

The most common number of front loaders installed in newly constructed

laundries in 2014 was:

1) 20, 25, 30 and 35 (tie)

5) 10 and 45 (tie)

7) 34 and 40 (tie)

Newly constructed coin laundries in 2014 have an average of 32.4 dryer pockets, which is slightly below 2013’s average of 32.8. The average was 30.8 in 2012 and 34.1 in 2011, by comparison.

Following are the most common numbers of dryer pockets installed in newly built coin laundries in 2014:

SURVEYING STORE SIZE

Are coin laundries taking up more real estate, or are store owners opting for more manageable, smaller stores?

Among the most popular store sizes, in square feet, reported in this year’s survey were 2,000; 3,500; 3,000; 2,400; and 4,000.

One-third (33.3%) of the stores constructed in 2014 are 2,000 square feet or less, while 36.1% are between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet. These figures compare to the 25% of stores measuring 2,000 square feet or less and the 59% covering between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet reported in 2013.

The largest newly constructed laundry built last year covers 7,500 square feet, while the smallest measures just 800 square feet, according to survey results.

The average newly constructed coin laundry store for 2014 covers 2,696 square feet. Prior averages were 2,663 square feet (2013); 2,754 square feet (2012); 2,721 square feet (2011); 2,663 square feet (2010); 2,712 square feet (2009); and 2,743 square feet (2008).

How does this measure up to previous survey results? Following are new-store profiles from the previous five surveys:

2012: 3.4 top loaders, 28.0 front loaders, 30.8 dryer pockets, and 2,754 square feet

2011: 4.5 top loaders, 30.0 front loaders, 34.1 dryer pockets, and 2,721 square feet

2010: 3.8 top loaders, 26.9 front loaders, 32.1 dryer pockets, and 2,663 square feet

2009: 5.7 top loaders, 27.3 front loaders, 32.6 dryer pockets, and 2,712 square feet

OTHER BUSINESS

Distributors were also asked if their company brokers self-service laundries. Forty-one percent of respondents to this year’s survey say they do, compared to approximately 31% in 2014 and 29% in 2013.

The share of distributors operating a route laundry increased, with 52.5% of respondents in this year’s survey saying they do. That compares to 38.1% in the 2014 survey and 38% in 2013.

The share of distributors hosting an equipment show in the upcoming year jumped by nearly one-quarter, as 76.9% say they have such plans for 2016. The figure was 54.8% in last year’s survey (check www.americancoinop.com/coinopevents throughout the year for notices of upcoming events).

The average selling price of a newly constructed store—not including the cost of land and building—in 2014 was $360,394, compared to $368,214 in 2013, $386,591 in 2012, and $366,000 in 2011.

BDT CAPITAL PARTNERS LLC TOACQUIRE MAJORITY STAKE IN ALLIANCE LAUNDRY SYSTEMS

Private equity firm BDT Capital Partners LLC has agreed to acquire a majority interest in Alliance Laundry Systems from Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, according to Alliance. Terms were not disclosed.

“Our management team will hold a significant ownership stake following the transaction and is excited by the new partnership with BDT,” says Mike Schoeb, Alliance’s president and CEO. “This partnership will allow us to accelerate the execution of our proven growth strategy, continue to invest in new and innovative products of exceptional quality and strengthen the value we bring to our premier distribution partners.”

“Our long-term capital will provide a solid foundation and long runway to continue to pursue exciting growth opportunities around the world,” says Chip Dunn, managing director at BDT.

Teachers’ Private Capital, the private equity group of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, acquired Alliance in January 2005. The group is expected to retain a minority interest in Alliance once the transaction is completed, according to the company.

EASTERN FUNDING HIRES REGAN AS VP OF SALES AND MARKETING

Commercial lender Eastern Funding LLC has hired Anthony “Tony” Regan as its vice president of sales and marketing.

Regan will be responsible for companywide sales and marketing across the grocery, drycleaning, franchise fast food and coin laundry business lines. He will manage all of Eastern Funding’s loan officers and report directly to senior management.

Prior to joining Eastern Funding, Regan was senior vice president of sales and marketing at American Dryer Corp. (ADC). He has more than 20 years of experience in the laundry industry and was part of the captive finance program at ADC.

“Anthony is a fantastic addition to our team,” says Stephen Gramaglia, chief operating officer of Eastern Funding. “His vast experience in national sales and marketing as well as his specific experience in the laundry industry is invaluable.”

HUEBSCH NAMES NJ’S BERGER STORE OWNER OF QUARTER

Huebsch® has named Curtis Berger the latest recipient of its Store Owner of the Quarter award for the growth and success he has achieved with his six— soon to be seven—Earlybird Laundry stores located in northern New Jersey.

“Curtis has seen tremendous growth since entering the laundry industry 15 years ago. He proves that a hardworking attitude accompanied by a supportive distributor and manufacturer will lead to success,” says Kathryn Rowen, North American sales manager for Huebsch, an Alliance Laundry Systems brand.

After receiving his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) accreditation and pursuing a career in mortgage-backed securities in New York City, Berger decided to leave banking and follow in his greatgrandfather’s footsteps, pursuing a small-business venture.

He moved to New Jersey and opened his first drycleaning business in 1996. Five years later, Berger decided to sell that business and open retail Laundromats equipped with machines and technology that would allow him to manage multiple stores remotely. Berger has been able to open a new store every two years since, and now owns/operates a half-dozen.

Throughout his journey, he relied on Cliff Ross, sales manager with distributor Metropolitan Machinery, to guide him in selecting durable equipment and viable locations.

“Cliff is familiar with the demographics of specific regions I’m interested in,” says Berger. “He is able to help me make location decisions by reviewing variables, including percentage of renters, people per household and income levels of the local population.”
