‘TRADESHOW’ THAT’SEASYON YOURFEET
The Clean Show is the pre-eminent trade show for the textile care industry, and it’s on an every-other-year schedule. With the next edition still nearly a year away in Las Vegas, how can owners and managers of self-service laundries, like you, get their trade show fix?
On even-numbered years (since Clean is staged on the odd-numbered), American Coin-Op fills the void with the Exhibit in Print. We bring our “trade show” to you!
This issue’s display advertisers have set up “booths” to acquaint readers with their latest products and services. For many years, the American Coin-Op Exhibit in Print has enabled readers to discover valuable tools and resources without having to leave the comfort of their stores or homes.
There’s no travel expense or hassle, no need to walk miles of aisles, no extended period having to be away from your business. There are no “live” demos here, sure, but you can easily get additional information on any product or service by visiting the exhibitor’s website or calling directly.
You’re already “registered”—just make your way to page 6 and hit the floor.

1-800-777-1802
The largest trade show in our industry is the “World Educational Congress for Laundering and Drycleaning” — otherwise known as the Clean Show. It’s the one time and place that manufacturers, suppliers, store owners and managers can all come together to check out the latest products, services and more.
But Clean only occurs every other year. In April 2015, Atlanta hosted the event in a homecoming nearly 30 years in the making. That seems like a distant memory now. Plans for Clean 2017 are under way, of course, and we’ll be heading to Las Vegas for that show next June, but that is a long way off.
With no major textile care industry trade show this year, how can manufacturers and suppliers deal with this lack of opportunities to show off their equipment and services? How can selfservice laundry owners and managers learn more about them first-hand?
American Coin-Op is happy to fill this void by hosting its own trade show—the Exhibit in Print—in this month’s issue. This “trade show you can put in your pocket” has a lot of the benefits of a live trade show: letting owners and managers peruse the “booths” of manufacturers and suppliers and check out all of the latest products and services.
The best thing about the Exhibit in Print? All the pluses of a live trade show come without the sore feet and distractions that show attendees may encounter inside an exhibit hall.
All the “booth” articles have been submitted by the exhibiting companies, this issue’s advertisers. Any claims made in Exhibit in Print are those of the participants, not American CoinOp.
It’s time to hit the floor!
Vend-Rite
Vend-Rite’s Vision line of venders provides an opportunity to offer customers the products they want in any size they need.
All venders feature a conveyor delivery system that maximizes product capacity. It can vend items as small as a business card (think “Internet password card”) to as large as a 75-ounce bottle of detergent. Unlike other venders that drop products up to 4 feet, the Vision vender delivers products by an elevator to the convenient collection area. The black interior and LED lighting system promote the advertising packaging colors.
The MDB wiring platform provides for multiple payment systems, coin, bill or card technology. The five-tube coin mechanism will accept nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar coins; and the multi-directional bill acceptor will accept $1, $5 and $10 bills.
Other features include continuous system check and self diagnostics, product dating, refrigeration check, accountability and sales data. The illuminated front and hours of operation can be programmed, as well as an advertising panel on the delivery elevator. The modular design of the pre-wired shelves, motor assemblies and cabinet configuration offer an owner greater flexibility.
The venders, offering SUN’s Brand Name laundry products, have the Vend-Rite bubble brand artwork on the fronts. Side-panel graphics are optional.

Hi-Steam
How can you utilize your existing attendant to produce more income? Can you add shirt service to your coin laundry to generate more income without the hassle of installing a costly boiler? Hi-Steam says yes!
The company has introduced a new shirt finisher and a collar and cuff machine that are all-electric — no boiler is needed.
Turbo Jr.(E) (pictured below on left) is the electrically operated shirt finisher. The company says it is perfect for the coin laundry, with the attendant available to add the shirt service for additional income. Again, no boiler is needed, and the machine has a compact footprint, Hi-Steam says.
Hi-Steam recommends pairing it with the electric collar and cuff machine, CB-520(E) (pictured on right), to produce “beautiful shirts.”

Hamilton Engineering’s EVO Companion water heaters are an ideal water-heating solution for any laundry or Laundromat, the company says. The compact water heaters require only a minimal footprint, and they are among the most efficient water heaters available with no flow restrictions or limits on the hot water supplied.
For laundries in areas of poor water quality, or if a current water heater suffers from buildup, then the Indirect Companion may be the solution. Poor water quality could include hard water, a high pH level, or a water chemistry prone to scale in the water heater. The Indirect Companion heats scaleforming water without the risk of developing scale buildup or a loss of efficiency.

NIE
The official name of NIE is National Fire and Indemnity Exchange. It was founded in 1915 to provide insurance products and services exclusively to the drycleaning and laundry industries. Throughout the years, NIE has written thousands of coin laundry operations, including attended, unattended and 24-hour operations. NIE’s staff has the expertise to handle the needs of all types of coin laundries and to help solve any problems customers may have.
NIE is a reciprocal exchange, meaning its policyholders own NIE and insure each other; there are no stockholders. All NIE commercial package policies are non-assessable; policyholders do not have to worry about premium assessments if NIE were to become unprofitable.
NIE’s policyholders elect an advisory committee comprised of dry cleaner and coin laundry owners. That committee decides how to invest NIE’s assets, what actuarial firm should analyze NIE’s loss reserves, and what CPA firm should audit NIE’s financial statements. The committee speaks on behalf of all policyholders and in those policyholders’ best interest.
The NIE staff is located in St. Louis. When there is a coverage question or service need, customers receive a prompt, courteous and efficient answer, the company says.

Setomatic Systems/SpyderWash
SpyderWash is more than just a payment system, says developer Setomatic Systems. It is a complete management system with the tools to help owners better run their locations and manage their wash-dry-fold business. Knowing the importance of adding emerging payment technologies, Setomatic included contactless (RFID) and Near Field Communication (NFC) on its readers from day one. At the time, nobody understood the importance of these features, Setomatic says, but that all changed in October 2014 when Apple released Apple Pay. Mobile Wallets using NFC have now become mainstream, with Google (Android Pay) and Samsung jumping on the NFC bandwagon. Customers can even pay using their Apple watch just by holding it in front of a SpyderWash reader.
Through the SpyderWash Web Portal, owners receive full accountability of all payments, including coins. New features are continuously being added. You can receive coin box alerts when your boxes are getting close to capacity. There is also a “machine availability” application, Spyder Watch, that allows customers to view which machines are available in your store.
This month, Setomatic is adding some exciting new loyalty programs that will help increase credit card usage and brand loyalty. It recently released its SpyderWash Kiosk where your customers can purchase loyalty cards and add value to loyalty cards with cash, credit cards as well as Apple, Android or Samsung Pay.

The new, innovative BC-1600 Bill Changer and Bill Buster product lines have recently been introduced by Rowe Bill Changers.
These new models feature an industry first — standard equipping that includes remote alerts for “hopper empty” or “stacker full” at no extra cost. Busy store owners appreciate receiving text or e-mail notifications when their Bill Changers or Bill Busters are out of service. Both product lines feature a feedback display for patrons showing “Please Insert Bill,” “Dispensing Bills,” “Dispensing Coins,” “Transaction Complete” and “Previous Bill.”
Cabinets offer high security, with a strong, 12-gauge cabinet and door featuring Rowe’s exclusive “bank safe-like” Medico “T” handle door lock system. Plus, the exterior graphic overlay can be customized to provide special instructions in various
languages, QR codes and colors matching a store’s décor.
The BC-1600 models are equipped with reliable, dual MEI/CPI bill acceptors or recyclers. These changers can receive a $20 bill from a patron and return three $5 bills plus 20 quarters. Other combinations are easily programmed on-site.
What is unique is that the three $5 bills dispensed for the $20 had been collected from previous patrons without the store owner or attendant touching the bills. It is like having a 24/7 automated cash drawer. Using the bill recycler in this way means store owners do not need to stock $5 bills, saving time, money and trips to the bank for change.
The Bill Buster models are perfect for card stores or larger, busy coin stores where patrons need to break large bills into smaller bills. They can be equipped with heavy-duty Puloon VCDM cash dispensers with two, three or four high-capacity bill cassettes.

* According to an August 2014 Leede Research Customer Value Analysis
ESD Inc.
Since 1969, ESD has provided the self-service laundry industry with high-quality, innovative products. It introduced the vertical coin slide to the U.S. market, which today remains the world standard.
In the early 1990s, ESD launched another industry game-changer by developing an electronic Smart Card payment system. It further refined electronic payments with the introduction of a magnetic-stripe card system that offers an economical alternative for Laundromats. The legacy Smart Card products continue to be widely used in multi-housing, and in many Laundromats, but mag-stripe technology that embraces both credit/debit cards and loyalty cards is now the featured system in most Laundromats.
ESD’s engineering and research team is continually creating new products. These system applications offer full accountability, advanced technology and true dependability.
CyberWash was the first mag-stripe system using in-store computers and offering marketing tools to help entice and hold customers. CrossLink is a wireless system that allows the acceptance of coins while adding credit/debit cards and/or mag-stripe loyalty cards. SmartLink is a wireless system that read all types of mag-stripe cards, as well as smart cards. CyberLaundry is the wireless system that adds a VTM to revalue cards and manages all data in the cloud. Synergy is a wireless system, similar to CyberLaundry, but uses on-site servers.
ESD recently introduced its most advanced VTM, the ESD Payment Center (pictured). It provides for the acceptance of cash, credit, debit and EBT cards. It can also accept most NFC mobile payment solutions, including Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay. The terminal is EMV smart chip hardware-ready.
MyLaundryLink is the cloud-hosted ESD-exclusive software that offers real-time transactional information, including revenue tracking and reporting, reader management, employee time-clock functions, and service alerts.

The Laundry Pass
The easy-to-operate Laundry Pass card payment system is designed to boost revenue and save time for Laundromat owners. It provides numerous cost-effective and innovative features. Customers obtain or refill Laundry Pass cards via a kiosk located on premises that conveniently accepts cash as well as debit/credit cards. The customer then simply taps the card to the reader of the desired machine before each use (rather than swiping it), and the programmed fee is electronically debited.
Among The Laundry Pass benefits: Audit Ability — Through a cloud service, owners have complete control over their finances by accessing up-to-the-minute auditing of cash deposits at the kiosk.
MIFAR Technology — The system uses the latest In Contact-less wave card technology. This precludes any downtime due to jammed readers, and customers do not need to replenish cards as often as there is no magnetic strip or chip to get worn out or dirty.
Freedom — To choose your own credit card processor.
Adjustable Vend Pricing — Set pricing in penny increments rather than being limited to quarter increments.
Operational Efficiency and Flexibility — Alter vend pricing with ease. Prices may be set to fluctuate by time of day.
Customer Loyalty Guarantee — Offer the option of customer incentives such as discount cards, or discount pricing on larger numbers of prepaid washes.
Affordability and Compatibility — Have the ability to maintain coin-operated and card-operated machines at one location simultaneously. The Laundry Pass technology is already in use on all major makes and models, the company says, allowing seamless integration and avoiding unnecessary new-machinery costs.
Money-Saving Solutions — Reduce labor costs with superior efficiency and mechanical capability. Prepaid laundry cards support constant, instantaneous monetary float.
Cloud-Based Software — Offers the unique option of cloud-based software that provides valuable business demographics, revenue information, remote monitoring capability, equipment analytics, and more.

Alliance Laundry Systems Gets OK for Massive Expansion
$62.6 million project will add 225,000 square feet of new buildings to campus
The Board of Directors for Alliance Laundry Systems has formally approved a proposed $62.6 million expansion to its campus in Ripon, Wis.
Investment incentives from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), Fond du Lac County through the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation (FCEDC), and the City of Ripon have been finalized, clearing the way for the expansion to move forward.
The project will add 225,000 square feet of new buildings, including the construction of a new North America Sales and Marketing Headquarters and the conversion of an existing warehouse into a manufacturing facility.
It is estimated that the project will add 200 new permanent jobs to the local workforce.
“Alliance Laundry Systems has been headquartered here in Ripon for more than a hundred years,” says Mike Schoeb, Alliance president and CEO. “During that time, we have developed a tremendous partnership with both Fond du Lac County and the State of Wisconsin. Those partnerships have allowed us to continue to invest in growing our business and keeping our workforce in Wisconsin. This expansion is another demonstration of our mutual commitment to our employees and the local community.”
Alliance Laundry Systems designs, manufactures and markets commercial laundry equipment under the brand names Huebsch®, IPSO®, Primus®, Speed Queen® and UniMac®, among others.
This expansion will be the single largest capacity-related investment in the company’s history, Alliance says, and will ensure its continued ability to meet demand for its laundry equipment. This is a much broader undertaking than previous expansions and will increase capacity across all brands and models.
The new North America Sales and Marketing Headquarters will feature state-of-the art conference facilities and a digital showroom, and will provide a premium destination for current and potential Alliance customers.
“We are thrilled to provide support for this expansion project to help Alliance Laundry Systems increase their Wisconsin footprint,” says Mark Hogan, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “Their continued success and ongoing commitment to grow operations and create jobs here are proof positive of Wisconsin’s strong business climate and responsive economic development network.”
“Alliance has been a key component of the County’s
robust and growing economy,” says Allen Buechel, Fond du Lac County executive. “The company’s latest expansion will significantly advance both the local and regional economies.”
“This third expansion will have a tremendous economic impact and indicates that Fond du Lac is a great place to do business,” says Steve Jenkins, president of the FCEDC. “Alliance Laundry Systems is a great company productively employing residents of the County and region but also contributing in many other ways to the well-being of the community.”
The new jobs generated by this expansion will include all aspects of manufacturing, including assembly, fabrication, welding, engineering, supervision and maintenance, as well as increases in salaried positions, Alliance says.
Groundbreaking for the project is expected to take place this summer. ACO

“We have received nothing but glowing reviews from our customers, who love how their laundry comes out virtually dry, which means they spend less total time doing laundry,” says Jouvenat.
He finds the new machines aesthetically and operationally pleasing, plus he likes the extra capacity because it means that the drop-off laundry doesn’t get held up in the queue for one of the 75-pound machines.
Walmart. An existing laundry at that location was run-down and in need of an overhaul, Abed says. Equipment would have to be replaced, and the entire business space needed a complete facelift.
The first thing Abed did was to negotiate a long-term lease with the landlord. With the lease secure and a long-term business plan in place, Abed opened A-1 Coin Laundry here in December. He ran the business most of December using the existing equipment while he formulated his renovation plan.
Jock Jouvenat’s Value Clean Laundromat was created out of the remnants of a 1970sera Laundromat that existed as a commercial unit in property Jouvenat bought in 1998. New to the industry then, he reached out to WSD for guidance in renovating the space and acquiring new laundry equipment. Value Clean was opened in May 2001.
Through the years, Jouvenat gradually increased Value Clean’s laundry capacity, both by adding Dexter laundry machines for general use, as well as behind the counter
when he established a dropoff laundry service. Nine years ago, he started acquiring larger machines, the first of which were three Dexter T-50x2 Stack 50-pound dryers that are still operating today. A year and a half ago, after consulting with WSD’s Jim Wright, he added a Dexter T-80 Express 80-pound OPL dryer behind the counter for drop-off laundry service.
He attended Clean 2015 with the intent to acquire two more 75-pounders. However, upon learning those particular machines were no longer being made, Jouvenat took Wright’s recommendation to purchase two Dexter T-1450 90-pound Express machines instead. The high-capacity washers fit within

When Hesham Abed decided to purchase A-1 Coin Laundry in an up-and-coming shopping center in late 2015, he turned once again to WSD for guidance. WSD’s Steve Erlinger had assisted the college professor and his wife, Zana, upgrade another store in Moreno Valley, Calif., in 2014.
Now, Abed hopes to duplicate their Moreno Valley success with the Corona A-1 Coin Laundry, backed by Dexter vended equipment and WSD’s experience and expertise.

Abed decided to brand this store in a manner similar to his Moreno Valley laundry, using the same high-quality materials, color scheme and laundry equipment. The project, involving a complete floor-to-ceiling renovation and the purchase of brand-new Dexter equipment, was completed Jan. 15.
Abed purchased machines from the Dexter C series line. Equipment installed consisted of 34 energy-efficient washing machines (seven 20-pound T-300 washers, 11 30-pound T-400 washers, eight 40-pound T-600 washers, six 60-pound T-900 washers, and two 80-pound T-1200 washers) as well as 23 stacked dryers (17 T-30x2 dryers and six T-50x2 dryers).

long overdue for replacement, according to Rubalcaba, and the facility lacked the large-size washers and dryers that customers demand.
The walls were painted a bright orange with black accents, a neutral tile replaced the old floors, the folding tables and ceiling tiles were replaced, and a new water heater and water tank were installed.
WSD partnered with businessman and restaurateur Carlos Rubalcaba on a renovation project for his business, Rubalcaba Bros Coin Laundry.
Rubalcaba, who purchased the Laundromat seven years ago from his uncle who owns the Rubalcaba Shopping Center, completed a facility upgrade and laundry equipment installation with Dexter C-Series machines.
His store’s equipment was
Rubalcaba worked with WSD’s Erlinger on the appropriate equipment mix. The C-Series features DexterLive controls and comes with access to DexterLive.com, a new web application.
Each machine also features large loading doors with new handles and 180-degree stainless steel hinges.
Rubalcaba Bros Coin Laundry now boasts 29 C-Series coin laundry washers, including seven T-300 models, 12 T-400s, six T-600s, two T-900s, and
two T-1200s. Additionally, Rubalcaba purchased 10 30-pound stack dryers and five 50-pound stack dryers.
For community members, the Laundromat is not just another revamped business in the area, it is a necessity. Many walk as a primary means of transportation and require ready access to a Laundromat; there isn’t another one close by, says
Erlinger. So when news of the renovation spread around the community, people were anxious to know when the store would reopen.
Rubalcaba plans to implement a fluff-and-fold service at the store, so that customers will be able to drop off loads of laundry for staff to wash, dry and fold for pickup at a later date or time.

TRANSFERRING OWNERSHIP TO A SON OR DAUGHTER
You’ve owned your Laundromat business for 35 years. You’re at the age when most of your friends have retired. You have family health issues that occupy quite a bit of time. Finally, you have a son or daughter who would like to take over the business.
How do you go about making a successful transfer of ownership? It is not like a sale of a business, in that you will not be totally removed. For instance, you will get together Sundays and he/she will discuss Laundromat issues. Finally, you will be receiving money from the transfer, and want to make sure that that flow continues. Otherwise, five years from now, you will be back running the show. And that is the last thing you want to do.
So you have a son who wants—really wants—to take over the business. Maybe he will do it in his spare time and it will be a second job for him. Or maybe he’ll make a career switch. Perhaps he’s helped you over the years. At any rate, he knows what he’s getting into. For example, he knows that it is a seven-day-a-week activity
because someone has to collect the money. He understands that some mechanical expertise is mandatory. Obviously, this transaction is “full disclosure;” there can be no secrets.
A second consideration is that you believe your son is up to the challenge. He has demonstrated the ability to work hard and to pay attention to details. He has shown prudence in his financial dealings. He has the perseverance to make it work over the long haul. If you say yes to all these, move forward. If you say maybe not—he has a history of starting and stopping projects, he lives above his means, he’s overcommitted—then make other plans. Sell the business to an outsider.
The deal might go something like this. You hand over your business, and your son agrees to pay $1,500 a month for 15 years ($18,000 a year). If something happens and your son doesn’t honor the commitment, you can take over the business and sell it if you want.
If you were taking $55,000 out of the business, this means that your son will have to start out drawing $37,000 a year. (Eighteen thousand dollars is for you and $37,000 is for him, totaling $55,000.) It must be crystal clear that he can manage on $37,000. It would be nice if his spouse had a job, so he wasn’t the primary breadwinner. Hopefully, he would improve the business over time, and there will be a higher pullout. At that point, you still get your $1,500 a month while he makes more than the initial $37,000. At any rate, he’ll make more after 15 years. That’s a successful transfer.
One must consider the alternative of things not going well. What happens if your son has trouble running your enterprise? He doesn’t buy insurance on time, and a midnight fire burns everything to the ground. Your $1,500 monthly payments stop. What will you do? You have no business to go back to because there’s only blackened cinders. Would you manage?
Without the payments, would you have to sell your house and move into a small apartment or senior housing? Would this bother you and your wife? Would you go around for the rest of your life, blaming your son for ruining your life? Think hard, and answer no to continue making the transfer.
Make it clear to your child that he is getting a great deal. He is taking over a turn-key business and will be

able to draw a living from day one. And he doesn’t have to put out any money up front. Point out to your son that he is taking on a huge obligation, namely that he agrees to partially fund his father for the next 15 years. Suggest that if the business fails, he will still have the parental obligation. That might mean that the son takes a second job at Walmart.
The tax ramifications of such a transfer is favorable. It’s called an installment sale transaction. If you had sold the business for, say, $170,000, that lump sum payment would put you in the maximum capital gains category and raise your remaining income by a few tax brackets, most likely. You might be at the 33% or 35% bracket. But a 15-year payout of $18,000 a year would minimize the capital gains liability and probably wouldn’t alter your overall tax bracket. You might save $10,000 or $20,000 in taxes.
Incidentally, when you sell over time, the selling price increases, as in the example I’ve described. It is a simple case of calculating the present value of the money combined with the risk of default. So, you are not gouging your son when you ask him to pay 60% more over time.
Draw up and sign an agreement. Nothing fancy—one or two
pages will do. It states the terms of the transfer, with the proviso that the seller can take over the business when the buyer misses a month of payments. If you want, hire a lawyer. But even a nonlegal note is binding, in that the seller can go after the son’s other assets if there’s non-compliance.
But that’s the last thing you want to happen. The real terms of the transfer is written in blood. The father, realizing his energy has peaked, wishes to bestow on his son a going business. In turn, the son (or daughter) realizing that his father has made this venture his life’s work, takes on the obligation of helping to support his father for 15 years.
If there are multiple children, you must figure how your sale of your business will affect the estate distribution after you are gone. Also, consider the possibility of you and your spouse dying early, before the full payment is realized. Consult your lawyer.
Done correctly, transferring a Laundromat business is a win-win situation for everyone. Maybe it will be your choice. ACO

Your Laundromat can be much more than the small business that provides your livelihood and supports your family. It can be a community gathering spot, a place where families can come to do their laundry but also enjoy a holiday party, bring their children for after-school tutoring, or even get health testing.
During its recent Excellence in Laundry Conference in California, the Coin Laundry Association invited a handful of store owners who actively organize and promote community activities through their stores to speak to their peers about why they involve themselves in more than just providing laundry services.
Tom Rhodes owns seven Sunshine Laundry Centers in Vero Beach, Ft. Pierce and Port St. Lucie, Fla.
“I want to make my small corner of the world a better place, pure and simple,” he says.
Rhodes’ businesses give laundry vouchers to a ministry that supports the poor, hosts “Loads of Love” events several times a year, donates a portion of revenue from a “blessed washer” used between Thanksgiving and Christmas to a local charity, and hires from a local jobs training program, among other community endeavors.

ter” within what looks like a washing machine. They take it to some outdoor events for kids to play in. It carries the Sunshine Laundry Center brand and is often photographed.
Rhodes recounted a story about a customer who, while waiting between cycles in one of his stores, was reading newspaper clippings about Sunshine’s community activities on a bulletin board. Upon recognizing Rhodes from a picture, the man said simply, “You’re a good man.”
“Think about how many deposits I made in that man’s mind, and how I differentiated myself right away from the other Laundromats in town,” Rhodes says.
He urged attendees to keep their eyes open to the needs in their own communities and then find a way to step in and fill them if they can.
“You guys can do that in your own way,” Rhodes says. “Your community may be a little different than Vero Beach, but I imagine a lot of the needs
are still the same. Just open your eyes, read the paper, listen to what’s on the radio. There are an abundance of opportunities for you.”
Tyrone Akins and Brian Holland are co-owners of The Laundry Café, with two 24-hour stores in Philadelphia and a third on the way.
Before opening the first store, “We had a decision to make,” says Akins. “Did we just want to become a business within that community, or did we want to become part of the fabric of that community? Our goal was to understand the interests of our clients, our customers.”
At The Laundry Café, “Family Night” encourages families to gather for free pizza and a movie one night a week. “Honor Roll Sweepstakes” provides community youth who make the honor roll the chance to win prizes like an iPad, Nintendo Wii or Kindle Fire. The “Halloween Costume Showcase” gives local kids the opportunity to flaunt costumes and enjoy free candy, music

Other programs, which are free and open to the public, focus on heart health, hypertension and breast cancer awareness.
“It takes so little of your time, but your return on investment is incredible,” Akins says. “When you say return on investment and you think business, you always think about dollars. What we’re talking about is your return on neighborhood investment.”
“It’s the small things that make a huge difference in another person’s life,” Holland says.
“A lot of times, it’s not all of the work that we do, sometimes it’s just making your store the venue for good things to happen,” says Akins.
Paul Pettefer owns four Laundry World stores in and around Lake Charles, La. As a Christ-following business owner driven to bring his half white-half black city together, he’s straightforward about using his stores as places to tell stories about the causes he’s
passionate about, particularly those involving low-income families.
He frequently hires young locals to assist with equipment installations or other projects in and around his stores. His sign out front often carries messages of peace and prosperity. He partners with local churches and organizations in providing different ministries.
On a personal note, he’s gained a reputation in his community as being quite a barbecue chef (“The Bishop of BBQ”). He even repurposed a dryer into a smoker that he sometimes uses at community events.
“What are you going to do with your platform?” Pettefer asks. “The press will pick it up if you have a cool story and you tell them about it. There’s an art to writing a press release, it takes a long time. But if you write one, they’ll publish it.”
Jeff Gardner is also known as the “Laundry Doctor,” the collective name for the
two Minneapolis-St. Paul Laundromats he owns and operates.
While the first store he opened catered mainly to singles, his second store was more family-oriented, and he immediately saw the need to learn more about the issues facing today’s families.
He started a “Story Time” program in which he offered pizza two nights a week and invited local leaders (police officers, city councilmen, etc.) to read to the children who came.
He became acquainted with a young girl who lived across the street and was there for every reading event. As she grew older, she became one of the volunteers reading to the kids. She excelled in high school and is now midway through college on her way to becoming a nurse. In comparison, her siblings have been in trouble with the law or have had children at a young age.
“The message is, by doing the things that these guys are doing, you can make a difference in your community,” Gardner says.

SPEED QUEEN NAMES KEEWES EQUIPMENT 2015 DISTRIBUTOR OF YEAR
Speed Queen® recently named KeeWes Equipment Co. its 2015 Distributor of the Year.
“KeeWes’ impressive sales performance and customer service have earned them the title of 2015 Distributor of the Year,” says Jim Rosenthal, Speed Queen North American sales manager. “The company continues to raise the bar for its sales growth and commitment to providing a first-rate customer experience.”
KeeWes also received this award in 2013.
“To be named the Distributor of the Year more than once shows remarkable drive and dedication to growing their business,” Rosenthal says.
Nick Luzecky, KeeWes president, accepted the award as his company’s annual Spring Open House.
“We are very honored to receive the Speed Queen Distributor of the Year award,” Luzecky says. “We have a dedicated and competent staff in all areas – sales, service and office support. We take pride in providing exceptional customer service and reliable equipment.”
KeeWes was founded in 1976 and services five states: Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Illinois. The company prides itself on not only exceptional sales and customer service, but its ability to provide full-service laundry solutions for clients, Speed Queen says. Those solutions include layout and design, equipment and laundry room supplies, and maintaining machines so they run at peak efficiency. The distributor has also designed a leasing program for customers that provides innovative Speed Queen equipment.
“Partnering with Speed Queen allows us to support our customers with industry-leading equipment, laundry design, after-sale support, and competitive financing solutions,” Luzecky says. “Speed Queen equipment and these resources ultimately help our customers run profitable and successful businesses.”
YANKEE EQUIPMENT HOSTS ANNUAL VENDED LAUNDRY TRADE SHOW
Officials with laundry equipment distributor Yankee Equipment say their recent St. Patrick’s Day Vended Laundry Trade Show attracted a “record number of registered attendees and high number of walk-in owner/operators coupled with industry experts from all segments of the industry.”
For the 38th consecutive year, Laundromat owners and operators from across New England filled the show floor during a March weekend to talk with Yankee Equipment and manufacturer representatives to learn about new products and discuss industry trends.
Seminars at the Westin Hotel on both days covered multiple topics. John Smith from Speed Queen discussed best practices in Remodeling and Remarketing Laundromats. Brian Wallace, president of the Coin Laundry Association, discussed how to determine the best time to replace laundry equipment. Ted Ristaino, president of Yankee Equipment, conducted an investment seminar for new
Laundromat owners and potential investors.
Among the manufacturers sending representatives were Speed Queen, Card Concepts, ESD, SpyderWash by Setomatic Systems, Standard Change-Makers, American Changer, NATCO, Hamilton Engineering, Milnor and Vend-Rite. AristoCraft and Package Supply participated with services and supply offerings, while Alliance Laundry Systems Finance and Eastern Funding offered finance packages.
“In some ways, the term ‘trade show’ no longer adequately describes what occurs during this weekend,” Ristaino says. “The weekend has become an incubator of ideas and dreams for store owners and managers to grow and expand their respective businesses. The focus our attendees had and the questions they asked were an indication of their insight, dedication and professionalism.”
GREAT LAKES COMMERCIAL SALES WRAPS SERIES OF PRODUCT EXPOS
Laundry equipment distributor Great Lakes Commercial Sales said “howdy” to more than 200 people while hosting its annual Product Expos throughout the Midwest during the months of April and May.
The Western-themed events—staged separately in Lansing, Mich.; Dayton, Ohio; and Wauwatosa, Wis.—featured Maytag, Electrolux, Wascomat and Primus equipment; free service schools; vendor displays; networking opportunities; and educational seminars, along with event-only pricing and financing opportunities on new equipment and ancillary items.
Representatives from Maytag, Laundrylux, Primus, Vend-Rite Mfg., Eastern Funding, ESD, Standard Change-Makers and the Coin Laundry Association joined in the events, providing product and industry knowledge. Attendees came away with helpful tips on

MOUNTAIN ELECTRONICS GOES SOLAR
Family-owned electronics repair company Mountain Electronics has made big changes to increase its work output while decreasing its environmental impact, the business says.
Its latest move is the installation of a photovoltaic solar array that provides about half of the company’s electricity needs.
Mountain Electronics has been performing quality repairs on circuit boards for commercial washers and dryers since 1999.
The 15.7-kW solar installation is made up of 48 highly rated SunPower solar panels. These panels, Mountain Electronics says, have won awards for efficiency and durability, and so will provide more clean electricity for a longer period than the average solar panel.
Environmental stewardship has always been a tenet of the company located outside of a rural town in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Mountain Electronics says it employs many methods to reduce its environmental footprint, including:
• Using biodegradable soap and non-toxic microbes rather than harsh chemicals to clean circuit boards; ▲

The company repairs circuit boards for commercial washers and dryers and has placed great emphasis on minimizing its environmental impact since opening in 1999. (Photo: Mountain Electronics)
• Reusing boxes and packaging material whenever possible;
• Printing on 100% recycled paper;
• Packing repaired boards in biodegradable and recycled Geami paper and cornstarch peanuts;
• Recycling components from control boards that are not repairable; and
• Using LED and compact fluorescent lighting to minimize energy consumption.
To meet growing demands for laundry equipment electronics repair, Mountain Electronics says it has hired five new employees this year, each specializing in a different area of cleaning, repairing and shipping boards back to customers in a timely manner.
CG WEST’S FOURTH PROFIT SYMPOSIUM SPURS RECORD SALES: VP
Continental Girbau West’s recent Conference of Champions Profit Symposium drew vended laundry owners and investors from throughout Southern California, according to Tod Sorensen, vice president of the equipment distributor.
Focused on methods for improving vended laundry profits and engaging customers, the event included an array of pertinent pre-
sentations by industry experts.
“This year’s two-day symposium included best-in-class educational speakers,” says Sorensen. “While participants appreciated these expert presentations, they also enjoyed parts and equipment specials. CG West enjoyed record equipment sales bolstered by low-rate, no-money-down financing. Many of the attendees, who have attended past symposiums, commented that they appreciated the programs presented and intend to invite more owners next year.”
Hosted by CG West and Elite Business Investments, symposium presenters and topics included Coin Laundry Association President Brian Wallace, What Sets the Top Operators Apart; Eastern Funding National Business Manager Jennifer Whitney, How to Become a Better Operator by Embracing Change; Elite Business Investments Vice President of Sales and Marketing Carol Dang, Retooling Payoff and Store Value Bump; Continental Girbau Vice President of Sales and Customer Services Joel Jorgensen, The Physics of Vended Laundry; Perfect Wash Express Laundry (continued on page 56)

Dexter University will also host a Service Academy this summer, as well as another Sales Academy later in the year.
EASTERN FUNDING PROMOTES MILES TO ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT
Commercial equipment finance company Eastern Funding reports it has promoted credit team leader David Miles to assistant vice president.
In seven years with Eastern Funding, Miles has served as credit analyst and then senior credit analyst. As assistant vice president, he will continue to oversee the credit team, while working more closely with Eastern Funding’s executive management.
The company also has promoted Gee Chai to senior credit analyst and Benjamin Davis to documentation specialist.
“At Eastern Funding, we believe the talent and dedication of our team are what makes us great,” says Nancy Robles-Guess, vice president of operations. “Our commitment to the individual professional growth of all our team members ensures that our customers are always served by one of the best financing teams in the industry.”
Eastern Funding says it has been expanding its operations staff with new hires in its loan servicing, credit analysis, documentation and funding groups. These moves are designed to strengthen its capabilities and to provide its growing customer base with the financing solutions they need more efficiently and seamlessly, the company says.
SUPER LAUNDRY HOSTS ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE
TRAINING PROGRAM
Dexter Laundry recently congratulated the Spring 2016 class of Dexter University – Sales Academy on its graduation.
The class was comprised of Dexter Authorized Distributor sales representatives from around the globe, totaling more than 400 years of experience in the commercial laundry industry. Despite their wealth of knowledge and expertise, Dexter says, the professional salesmen and saleswomen dedicated a week to the revamped training program to learn how to be the best laundry representative in their territory.
The curriculum was designed to make each individual better at representing the Dexter product line in the vended and on-premise laundry segments, with courses ranging from best sales practices to laundry room design.
The class also had the opportunity to spend time in Dexter’s test lab and factory, where craftsman with a combined 1,800-plus years of experience build high-quality commercial washers and dryers.
Laundry equipment distributor Super Laundry hosted an annual open house at its office/warehouse in King of Prussia, Pa. Company officials say the May 12 show was well attended by Laundromat owners from Philadelphia and as far away as New York.
On display were Speed Queen washers and dryers, ESD card systems, Alliance Laundry Systems finance, NATCO water heaters, Eastern Funding finance, Vend-Rite soap venders and Standard Change-Makers EASYPAY systems. Every manufacturer had factory personnel on hand to answer attendees’ questions about the industry and their products or services.
Eastern Funding’s Brian Grell presented Zombie Laundries, and Michael Sokolowski, chief operating officer of the Coin Laundry Association, gave a presentation in which he shared ideas for making Laundromats more profitable.
While networking, those in attendance enjoyed some good food as well as door prizes that Super Laundry and a few of the manufacturers had donated.
Super Laundry is now planning a Speed Queen service school for Sept. 27. To learn more, call Bob Eisenberg at 484-686-1500 or e-mail him at beisenberg@cscserviceworks.com.

IT’S SIMPLE.
Continental has been marketing the advantages of washers touting extract speeds greater than 200 Gforce since DAY 1! Why should on-premise laundries be the only ones to benefit from high-performance washers with high-speed extract capabilities? Thanks to Continental, vended laundries began enjoying the high-speed benefits of lower operational costs, greater customer turnover and improved profit potential. We lead the industry in market-unique, creative innovations that positively impact vended laundries. NO WONDER THE OTHERS FOLLOW OUR LEAD … Call (800) 256-1073 to make your laundry more attractive, flexible, profitable, convenient and unique!
AT CONTINENTAL, WE ARE INNOVATORS. GIRBAU INC. (800) 256-1073 • www.continentalgirbau.com
Why did you choose an ESD system?
We obviously wanted a state-of-the-art card system that would give us a competitive advantage, but we also wanted a company that was as celebrated for their service and customer care as they are for their most successful products. ESD is the gold standard in the industry because of superior products, well-trained personnel, and outstanding customer service.
Brian Holland, Partner
In the purest sense of the word, we are “newbies” to the vended laundry arena - excited to be here, eager to play, hungry for knowledge, and humble enough to learn from anyone who is willing to offer guidance. At the same time we have seasoned experience and battle scars from both corporate- and small business experiences in unrelated industries. While the industries are completely unrelated, the foundational business principals that they taught - Customer Service, Finance, Marketing, Sales, People Management, HR, Operations - are all directly relevant. Maybe we’re newbies with a little seasoning.
The Laundry Café is located in a fantastic destination location, but it is in a an internet challenged area of the city. ESD exceeded all our expectations by creating a wireless network even though none of the major internet providers were available. ESD has an internal team of IT professionals who customized our system to meet our needs, from design to installation.
Is there anything that surprised you about the ESD system?
I was pleasantly surprised at the managerial utilities. The reports are thorough, comprehensive, and seamlessly integrated. I can produce performance reports that track nearly everything. These are great for tracking your business and making informed adjustments for improvement.
Contact your local ESD distributor or ESD sales representative for more information.
What is your experience in the laundry industry?
