REMAINS STRONG, ANNUAL SURVEY SHOWS

Distributor business performance shows no signs of weakening, based on the results of American Coin-Op’s annual Distributors Survey.

Slightly more than two-thirds of distributors polled say their business—including sales of newly constructed vended laundries and replacement business—was better in 2015 compared to 2014. And when it comes to sales projections, an even larger percentage (68.8%) believes 2016 sales will surpass those of 2015’s.

Where is the industry trending when it comes to logistics, such as the average number of top loaders, front loaders and dryer pockets installed in newly constructed stores?

It’s a different year but the same, old story. And it’s a good one!

Distributor business remains strong, based on the results of American CoinOp’s annual Distributors Survey. The majority polled once again enjoyed better business than the previous year, and is expecting 2016 overall sales to surpass those of 2015.

Slightly more than two-thirds of distributors polled (67.4%) say that business—including sales of newly constructed vended laundries and replacement business—was better in 2015 compared to 2014. When it comes to sales projections, an even larger percentage (68.8%) believes 2016 sales will be better than 2015’s.

Just 13% of respondents say 2015 business was worse than 2014’s, while 19.6% say that business stayed the same.

Distributors listed in the previous edition of the American Coin-Op Distributors Directory were invited to participate in this year’s unscientific survey, which charts 2015 business and makes comparisons to previous years.

2015 BUSINESS

This year, 67.4% of distributors polled said total business was better in 2015 than 2014. That’s very similar to last year’s report in which 68.3% of distributors said total business was better in 2014 than in 2013. In the 2014 survey, 53.7% of respondents said total business was better in 2013 than in 2012.

desire to replace outdated equipment, improved lending conditions and hiring additional personnel, among other reasons.

“The biggest factor is the rising water and sewer rates making the older, inefficient washers a liability,” writes one distributor. “Newer energy-efficient washers can save a customer almost one-half of their water and sewer costs. In a couple of cases, the savings are paying for the note payment on the new machines.”

NEW-LAUNDRY CONSTRUCTION

American Coin-Op asked distributors to weigh in on how many new laundries they built and/or supplied equipment to in 2014.

Distributor Sales Projections

2015 sales • 20.8% expect 2016 sales to be the same as 2015

• 10.4% expect 2016 sales to fall short of 2015

There was a shift in terms of the numbers of laundries that these companies are building for and/ or supplying. For example, 40.5% of respondents reported they built or supplied equipment to three or fewer new laundries in 2015. This compares to 69.2% in 2014, 54% in 2013 and 55% in 2012.

The minority whose business suffered in 2015 said factors like a faltering local economy, less demand for equipment and even losing representation of a line of equipment took a toll on their revenue.

REPLACEMENT BUSINESS

Roughly 64% of distributors say their replacement business was up in 2015 compared to 2014. This falls short of last year’s survey in which 73.2% of distributors reported better 2014-to-2013 replacement business. It does, however, remain stronger than the 52.5% who saw their replacement business increase in 2013 from 2012.

Slightly more than 11% of respondents saw 2015 replacement business decrease from that of 2014, while 24.4% say it remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, 59.5% of respondents reported building or supplying equipment to four or more newer laundries in 2015.

The actual number of new laundries that distributors were involved with in some way in 2015 ranged from just a single store to one respondent reporting his/her company dealt with 40 stores.

Roughly 35% of distributors surveyed said their new-construction total for 2015 was higher than the previous year. Comparing to previous surveys, approximately 48% said their new-construction business was up for 2014; roughly 39% said it was up for 2013; and approximately 41% said it was up for 2012.

said their new-construction total for 2015 remained the same as 2014. That compares to approximately 38% of distributors reporting no change in 2014 from 2013, roughly 43.9% reporting no change in 2013 from 2012 and 23.5% reporting no change in 2012 from 2011.

Roughly 24% of distributors said their newconstruction total was lower in 2015 than in 2014, which is up from the 15% who reported lower new-construction totals in 2014 from 2013. Earlier surveys showed 17% with lower totals in 2013 than in 2012 and 35.3% with lower totals in 2012 than in 2011.

EQUIPMENT MIX

Since achieving the right equipment mix is critical for a vended laundry’s success, we’re sure you’re wondering what equipment store owners and distributors are installing in laundries across the country.

Here is a quick analysis on trends, according to this year’s survey results.

Forty-one percent of new stores in 2015 had at least one top loader, which is a sizable decline from 2014’s figure of 60%. Looking back further, the percentage of new stores with at least one top loader was 63% in 2013, 45% in 2012 and 58% in 2011.

Vended laundries newly built in 2015 have an average of 2.8 top loaders, compared to an average of 4.6 per new store in 2014, 4.5 per new store in 2013 and 3.4 per new store in 2012. (These figures factor in stores with no top loaders.)

Breaking it down, following are the most popular numbers of top loaders installed in new stores in 2015:

When it comes to front loaders, vended laundries newly contructed in 2015 have an average of 28.5 front loaders, a slight increase from 2014’s average of 27.5 and 2013’s average of 26.6.

Newly constructed vended laundries in 2015 have an average of 31.7 dryer pockets, which is slightly below 2014’s average of 32.4. The average was 32.8 in 2013 and 30.8 in 2012, by comparison.

Following are the most common number of dryer pockets installed in newly built vended laundries in 2015:

SURVEYING STORE SIZE

Are store owners opting for more manageable, smaller stores, or are vended laundries taking up more real estate? Among the most popular store sizes, in square feet, reported in this year’s survey were 2,000; 2,500; 3,000; 1,500; and 2,200.

Less than one-third (29.7%) of the stores constructed in 2015 are 2,000 square feet or less, while 47.5% are between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet.

These figures compare to the 33% of stores measuring 2,000 square feet or less and the 36.1% covering between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet reported for 2014.

The largest newly constructed vended laundry built last year covers 8,500 square feet, while the smallest measures just 700 square feet, according to survey results.

The average newly constructed vended laundry store for 2015 covers 2,639 square feet. Prior size averages were 2,696 (2014), 2,663 (2013), 2,754 (2012) and 2,721 (2011).

The average selling price of a newly constructed store—distributors were asked to exclude the cost of land and building—in 2015 was $452,000, compared to $360,394 in 2014, $368,214 in 2013, $386,591 in 2012 and $366,000 in 2011.

NEW-STORE PROFILES OVER THE YEARS

So, how do these numbers from 2015 compare to distributor business performance in years past? Here is a quick recap of facts and figures.

The average newly constructed store in 2015 has 2.8 top loaders, 28.5 front loaders, 31.7 dryer pockets, and covers, on average, 2,639 square feet.

Following are new-store profiles from the previous five surveys:

• 2014: 4.6 top loaders, 27.5 front loaders, 32.4 dryer pockets, and 2,696 square feet

• 2013: 4.5 top loaders, 26.6 front loaders, 32.8 dryer pockets, and 2,663 square feet

• 2012: 3.4 top loaders, 28.0 front loaders, 30.8 dryer pockets, and 2,754 square feet

• 2011: 4.5 top loaders, 30.0 front loaders, 34.1 dryer pockets, and 2,721 square feet

• 2010: 3.8 top loaders, 26.9 front loaders, 32.1 dryer pockets, and 2,663 square feet

OTHER BUSINESS

Distributors were also asked if their company brokers vended laundries. Twenty-five percent of respondents say they do, compared to 41% in 2015 and approximately 31% in 2014.

The share of distributors operating a route laundry decreased, with 36.2% of respondents in this year’s survey saying they do. That compares to 52.5% in the 2015 survey, 38.1% in 2014 and 38% in 2013.

The share of distributors hosting an equipment show annually was also down, with 57.5% reporting they have such plans. The figure was 76.9% in last year’s survey (check https://americancoinop.com/ coinop-events throughout the year for notices of upcoming events).

Setomatic Systems has released its new SpyderWash Kiosk that’s loaded with features, the company reports.

Each low-cost/high-value kiosk comes standard with a Receipt Printer, Card Dispenser, MEI Bill Validator and an NFC-Enabled Credit Card Reader.

Customers can purchase and reload loyalty cards using cash, credit/debit cards, or any of the latest mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Android Pay or Samsung Pay.

Each kiosk can be set up with

its own set of parameters, so if a laundry operator would like to issue a bonus to his or her customers, it’s a simple software configuration, Setomatic says. Customers are also able to see and print their card balance.

ENVIROSTAR TO ACQUIRE WESTERN STATE DESIGN FOR $28 MILLION

Commercial laundry equipment distributor EnviroStar Inc. (EVI) reports it has executed a definitive asset purchase agreement to acquire substantially all of the assets of California-based Western State Design LLC, also a distributor of commercial, industrial and coin-operated laundry products, and provider of installation and routine maintenance services.

Closing of the transaction is subject to certain conditions, including financing. Pursuant to the agreement, the purchase price is $28 million, of which $18 million will be paid in cash at closing—which is expected to occur by mid-October—and $10 million in shares of EVI’s common stock.

Founded in 1974 and based in Hayward, Calif., Western State Design distributes commercial and industrial laundry equipment and related parts for new laundry facilities and to the replacement laundry market. It distributes certain commercial laundry brands on an exclusive basis within California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and parts of Nevada, Arizona and Idaho.

It will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of EVI under its current name, from its present locations, led by its existing management team and employees, and with the added benefit of EVI’s support and resources to assist Western in execution of its growth plans.

Additionally, Dennis Mack, Western State Design president, will be named a director and executive officer of EVI. Tom Marks, Western State Design executive vice president, will also become an executive officer.

EnviroStar, which has served the laundry industry since 1959, also distributes drycleaning equipment, industrial boilers, and related parts, supplies and technical services.

THIRD GENERATION OF RAWLINS FAMILY JOINS R&B WIRE PRODUCTS

R&B Wire Products CEO Rick Rawlins says his son, Grant Rawlins, has joined the company, marking the third generation to come aboard the diversified manufacturer of wire, tubular, poly, and vinyl bushel products for the coin laundry industry and others.

His addition comes exactly 50 years after his grandfather, Rea Rawlins, purchased the company, and 42 years after father Rick joined.

Grant Rawlins graduated from Pepperdine University in April with a bachelor’s degree in integrated marketing communication.

He says he’s anxious to bring his team-focused mentality to the company, learned from his well-known water polo coaches Terry Schroeder (a six-time Olympian) and Merrill Moses (who played goalie for the U.S. in the Summer Olympics).

“I’m looking forward to contributing to the company’s success while continuing the legacy that my grandfather started 50 years ago,” Rawlins says.

“This is a great legacy for R&B for Grant to be involved in, with such a rich family history and being able to take his education and put it into use immediately,” says Frank Rowe, vice president of sales and marketing for the company. “His athletic training is a testament to his drive and focus, which is a huge plus for our team.”

ON-DEMAND LAUNDRY SERVICE WASHIO ABRUPTLY CEASES OPERATIONS

On Aug. 29, the on-demand laundry and drycleaning services startup Washio announced via its website that it was ceasing operations immediately. It was serving the cities of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., when it was shuttered.

In a letter posted on the company’s website, Washio co-founders Jordan Metzner, Juan Dulanto and Bob Wall explained that no more orders would be accepted and that outstanding orders would be returned promptly to customers.

“We generated millions in revenue and hundreds of thousands of orders, but the nature of startups is being innovative and venturing into uncharted territory: sometimes you make it, sometimes you don’t,” the trio wrote.
