COIN LAUNDRY BIZ BETTER FOR VAST MAJORITY IN 2016

Better than 79% of coin laundry store owners polled say that overall business was better for them in 2016 compared to the prior year, according to results from this quarter’s American Coin-Op Your Views survey.

Equal shares of 39.6% say their total laundry business performed “much better” or “somewhat better.” Roughly 13% say that 2016 business was the “same as 2015.” A small percentage (8.3%) reported business being “somewhat worse in 2016,” and no one described business as “much worse in 2016.”

In terms of their expectations based on the economy, 62.5% of store owners say their business performance last year was “about what [they] expected,” while 27.1% say it was “better than [they] expected.” The remaining 10.4% say it was “worse than [they] expected.”

Roughly 53% of store owners say that a “customer base increase” was one of the reasons why their business improved last year, while 31.6% attributed the improvement to “[raising] prices.” (Respondents were asked to select as many as applied from eight options.)

About 24% chalk up their improvement to “[installing] new equipment.” The boost was due to “better marketing,” say 18.4% of respondents. Equal shares (7.9%) point to decreasing expenses or offering new extra services.

Roughly 13% gave “other” reasons as to why they believe business improved, such as expanding their footprint or adding consistent commercial business.

Among those whose coin laundry business worsened last year, equal shares (33.3%) blame it on their customer base shrinking, expenses rising, or “other” reasons. (Again, respondents could select any from among a list of six factors.) Onequarter of respondents blame competition cutting into their business, and 16.7% say customers cut down on the number of visits they made. A small share (8.3%) say their extra-service income dropped.

For 2017, attracting new customers is the No. 1 business priority of 27.1% of store owners polled. Other respondents seek to “spruce up [their] store(s)” (20.8%), explore extra services or new sales opportunities (18.8%), add or update equipment (16.7%), increase vend prices and/or cut costs (14.6%), or “other” (2.1%).

Hanging Out Clothesline Timeline Under the

Garment history helps weave fabric of rural New York community

If you thought the owner of a New York coin-op named We’ve Got Your Sock Laundromat would just tack up an assortment of mismatched knits and call it a day, then you’ve never met Poughkeepsie’s own Suzy Kee. Her one-of-a-kind clothesline timeline showcasing 140 years of Americana will really knock your socks off.

From a pre-Civil War hand-sewn silk gown to a ’70s micro-mini ensemble affectionately referred to as “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!”, Kee pays tribute to the changing

face of fashion with an impressive lineup of vintage garments pinned to a dual-cord clothesline draped above the mirror finish of stainless steel classic Gen 4 and Gen 5 Wascomats.

“I thought it would be really neat to hang up clothing, but not just anyone’s, because that’s kind of banal. So, the creativity came out if I hung out period clothing,” Kee explains. “I was looking for specific styles that screamed out a certain period.”

In addition to a clothesline paying homage to the fabric of life in bygone days, the venue exhibits the labor-intensive laundering apparatus of yesteryear. A copper hand-held agitator, accompanied by a laundry fork, bar soap saver, and wool sock stretcher, adorn a perimeter wall just to the left of a trio of antique hand irons. On display below the tools is a circa 1946 Maytag wringer washer, still in working condition.

And while her coinop drips with nostalgia, it reflects an oftforgotten approach to the laundry business model — a return to a time when good, oldfashioned customer service was a hallmark of the trade.

Though there are no object labels identifying the nearly 100 artifacts, Kee will happily take you back in time with a narrated tour when she

isn’t busy meticulously folding a customer order or tending to her other duties as official greeter or unofficial matchmaker.

That’s right: Besides pairing a “sole mate” to an errant sock, she is quite adept at finding soul mates for singles in the laundry’s aisle, with two successful hookups to date — on top of a love connection with her own beau.

You’ll likely find the industrious Kee toiling away at a table with a blue clothes folding board at her fingertips just steps from the front door. The strategic position permits her to lend a hand at the storefront and personally welcome visitors, nearly

all of whom are greeted on a first-name basis.

The laundry-cum-museum curator’s engaging personality softens the hard lines and impersonal nature of the traditional self-service coin-op format.

“I want customers to feel that they’re welcome to visit and hang out here, or chat to get to know people,” Kee emphasizes. “It’s not like a typical laundry where people mind their own business and don’t make eye contact.”

On this particular winter day, Susan Langford and Tina Wrisley-Day had stopped in to leave their wash and enjoy a relaxing beverage on the casual wicker furniture at the front of the house.

The pair of retired nurses, who travel 15 and 10 miles, respectively, to reach the store, use the opportunity to catch up on the latest local happenings and gaze longingly at fashion’s elegant past. Langford adores the 1920s Stone Marten fur wrap near the clothesline’s midpoint while her friend gives a nod to the graceful pink satin

dress to its immediate right.

We’ve Got Your Sock’s garment-related potpourri is a springboard for interaction among patrons. The 70-year-old, versatile wringer washer — a gift last year from Kee’s boyfriend — stirs up talk and emotion.

“It brings back memories of their mom or grandmother who had a similar washer. It makes them smile,” she says.

And although her row of 22 immaculately maintained front loaders spins profits week in and week out, none of the machines came fitted with attachments to churn butter, grind meat, and make sausage like the ol’ vintage model.

With the ice broken, the outgoing owner relishes bringing others into the conversation.

“I’ll introduce customers by first name or bring out some commonality so people start chatting. I want this place to have a friendly feel.”

Counter services are frequently transacted outside the office cubicle where dropoff is handed off and welcomed with open arms, ensuring special laundering and finishing requests are duly noted.

Self-service customers are equally attended to when they enter the premises, as their cycles progress, and finally at departure. The watchful operator offers up stain removal tips to the uninitiated and checks in periodically to inquire if the machines are meeting patron expectations.

We’ve Got Your Sock’s buy-10-get-1free wash loyalty card bears the individual’s name to help engrave it in Kee’s memory and is initialed — rather than punched — by the operator to tally another load and one more meet-and-greet.

Kee, who attends the coin-op every day except two holidays when the laundry is closed, has built trade by caring for the loads and the people crossing her threshold.

“I have customers who feel they can confide in me or let me know that I’ve made some type of difference in their lives. That’s the most gratifying feeling in the world, and what keeps me going.”

The store owner’s close involvement with her community was evident during my visit, as a special education high school

student, participating in a work-study program coordinated by locally based Abilities First, arrived for his twice-weekly, twohour cleaning exercise.

Kee opened her laundry to the project — which integrates special needs high schoolers into local business settings to teach them life skills and time management — shortly after the store renovation.

Her ties to lifting up the next generation run deep. Kee taught in New York public education, including grade schools near the infamous Fort Apache The Bronx police precinct as well as Roosevelt Island. Eight years ago, after a quarter-century in front of the chalkboard, she became disillusioned with a system that placed a greater emphasis on standardized test scores than fostering creativity in young minds. She left teaching to seek a new outlet for her skills.

Both sets of Kee’s grandparents were involved in the garment care industry decades ago, with one operating a Chinese hand laundry and the other a dry cleaner. Pursuing ownership of a coin-op satisfied what she was yearning.

“This was a way to reconnect with them on some level. Through this place or through me, it feels like part of them is still around,” she shares. “With a laundry, I could find some meaning in the work I did and be social at the same time.”

The decades-old coin-op now called We’ve Got Your Sock Laundromat was rejuvenated five years ago with new dryers, wall treatment and floor covering. GOIN’ WITH COHEN

within an hour’s drive of her home, Kee caught wind of a motivated owner looking to sell a neglected 1,800-square-foot, partially attended store.

Kee rolled up her sleeves to remove years of grit and grime from washers, and invested in new dryer tumblers, bright lighting fixtures and flooring.

The novice operator sought customer feedback and catered to their requests for complimentary Wi-Fi and monthly magazine subscriptions. She encouraged store reviews and framed them. When the volume of handwritten letters exceeded available wall space, she bound them in a scrapbook that rests today at the counter.

With the place spruced up, attention turned to the décor, which “needed a woman’s touch.” A large-scale whimsical take on socks, in keeping with the store’s namesake, was considered by Kee at one point to replace a tattered cityscape wall mural, but later nixed following completion of a small framed collection in the lounge area.

Orchestrating a clothing timeline popped into her head during the middle of the night. The former educator proceeded to read up on period clothing, research museum exhibitions, and study the work of photo archivists to ensure her project would make the grade. Visits to antique outlets were a dead end, but she hit pay dirt online at eBay and Etsy.

A trio of antique hand irons on display include (from left) gasoline- and charcoalfueled models, and an asbestos sad iron design.

employed to maintain the collection.

“I knew what I wanted and didn’t stop looking until I found it,” the owner recalls. After 12 months and a $3,000 shopping spree, the gallery was unveiled.

Anchored by pulleys at each end and reinforced with decorative wooden supports, the 70-foot clothesline was fitted with over 40 men’s and women’s garments, offering a glimpse of fashion trends from the 1840s to the 1980s.

Kee walks you through the hanging exhibition like a seasoned museum guide, offering up vivid descriptions and anecdotes. Her knowledge of each piece — from the intricate detail of Edwardian era hand-crocheted lace to the tailored styles of men’s dress wear of the same period — turns wash day into a learning experience.

None of the pieces are encased in plastic bags or glass cases so as to retain the visual impact of an authentic hanging clothesline.

“There was a trade-off there that I was willing to make,” Kee notes, emphasizing that the store is climate-controlled year-round and boasts a dehumidifier.

Laundering or dry-cleaning the articles to remove any accumulation of lint is out of the question. She recalls removing a loose thread from the oldest item that immediately disintegrated between her fingers. Today, only a feather duster is

The tribute to fashion has garnered local press but yielded no measurable effect on revenue after one year in, Kee admits.

“I don’t feel it’s affected the bottom line. It’s just an outlet for my creativity, and if it makes the place more welcoming, that’s all the better. I really want a homey environment because I spend more hours here than I do at home.”

Kee had ambitions to carry the timeline into the 21st century but ran out of clothesline space, allotting the last pins to a Who concert T-shirt.

“I wanted to end at the current times and would have had a pair of yoga pants and a Victoria’s Secret thong,” she quips.

Response to the unorthodox clothesline collection depends on which way the wind blows.

“The reaction is threefold: 1) ‘That’s really cool!’ 2) ‘Can I borrow that poodle skirt for a costume party? and 3) ‘Is this clothing that people left behind?’ That last one befuddles me,” the owner remarks.

As she talks, Kee circles back to her main worktable and glances up at a simple, patterned feed-sack dress, admiring the resourcefulness of farm women of the 1920s who used creativity to transform a humble bag into something attractive.

Heading out on the road, I took comfort in knowing that same spirit is alive and well inside a Poughkeepsie laundry. ACO

CARD CONCEPTS (CCI) APPOINTS STEVE MARCIONETTIPRESIDENT

Card Concepts Inc. (CCI) appointed General Manager Steve Marcionetti its new president effective Jan. 1, the company reports.

In a statement, former President Dion Marcionetti, Steve’s father, says, “Steve has spearheaded the design of new products and innovations which have contributed to our success. Steve is responsible for company sales and the interaction with our distributors. He has listened to our customers and has taken action to meet their expectations. Steve is one of the founders of CCI and has handled every aspect of our business. We look forward to our continued success with Steve leading our company.”

“I’m proud of what we have accomplished under my father’s leadership, and I’m excited for the opportunity to help improve our industry through innovation and quality customer support,” says Steve Marcionetti.

He has been in the vended laundry industry for 18 years, and currently serves as a board member on the Coin Laundry Association’s national board of directors.

Privately held CCI was founded in 1999 and develops electronic payment solutions, including its LaundryCard and FasCard product lines, exclusively for the vended laundry industry.

HUEBSCH SELECTS HICKEY AS STORE OWNER OF QUARTER

Huebsch® has named Mark Hickey the latest recipient of its Store Owner of the Quarter award. With the support and advice he received from his distributor, and by replacing outdated machines with new, durable Huebsch equipment, Hickey’s two Spin City Laundromats in Tennessee and Mississippi have become successful businesses, the company says.

“Hickey is an accomplished Laundromat owner and is dedicated to providing quality customer service,” says Kathryn Rowen, Huebsch’s North American sales manager. “Hickey always puts his customers first and goes out of his way to make them feel welcome. We look forward to building this partnership with Hickey and watching his businesses continue to grow.”

When the company he worked for closed in 2009, Hickey decided to move back to Memphis to be closer to family. There, he began researching potential investment opportunities.

Hickey decided to purchase a Laundromat and turned to Mike Leake from Memphis-based Larry & Mike’s Laundry Services for guidance. Leake helped Hickey find and evaluate a number of existing stores that were available for sale, and Hickey purchased one in Millington, Tenn., and one in Horn Lake, Miss.

Hickey needed to replace some equipment right away and wanted to feature a single brand in his stores. Leake recommended Huebsch equipment based on machine quality and the manufacturer’s dedication to providing an innovative suite of products.

“Mike Leake helped advise me on the equipment, as well as many other important decisions I needed to make in order for my Laundromats to succeed,” Hickey says.

A few years after acquiring his Laundromats, Hickey decided he wanted to move the businesses to new buildings to improve the look and feel of his stores. He worked closely with Huebsch Laundry Design services to determine the best store layout, as well as Huebsch Financial to finance his equipment replacement in order to provide the best mix of machines for his customers.

Both new stores were designed to provide customers with plenty of space. Hickey also offers a variety of amenities to make the experience at the new Spin City stores more enjoyable, including free Wi-Fi, wash/dry/fold service and vending machines, as well as an ATM at the Horn Lake store.
