2019 marks the 37th year that American Coin-Op has published our Buyer’s Guide, a directory of manufacturers and providers of products and services of interest to vended laundry owners and operators.

Whether it be a new front loader, a payment system, an extra profit center, or something else, our Buyer’s Guide offers a list of companies that market them and informs prospective buyers how they can contact them. There are just shy of 150 companies listed this year.

We provide everything you need to know—local and/or toll-free phone numbers, websites and e-mail addresses to contact a vendor. There’s even a principal contact person listed, if one was provided to us.

The Buyer’s Guide begins on page 6 with the Products Directory—categorical listings of companies that manufacture or supply equipment, signage, furniture and more, or provide unique services to self-service laundry owners or investors.

Once you’ve identified a vendor that interests you, you can learn where to contact them in the Manufacturers & Suppliers Directory starting on page 14.

HOW YOUR DISTRIBUTOR CAN HELP WITH VENDED LAUNDRY DEVELOPMENT

As a vended laundry investor, wouldn’t you like to be as certain as possible that your money and efforts result in a successful, profitable outcome? As you look to invest in an existing vended laundry, or develop a new one from scratch, there are multiple critical factors to consider that will ultimately shape your business’ success. Nobody understands these factors — site selection, store layout, equipment mix, financing, lease negotiation, design — more than your local laundry equipment distributor.

As laundry experts who know the markets they serve, distributors can and should become lifetime business partners who’ve got your back — and provide ongoing services — before, during and after the equipment sale.

Do your research and interview distributors in your market. Make sure the distributor you select can offer you not only a price for equipment but services, training, parts and marketing support. You’re making a large investment and the dealer you select will be critical in your long-term success.

Additionally, your distributor should encourage you to join the Coin Laundry Association (CLA), where membership can immediately put you in contact with best-in-class operators and a network of valuable resources.

Remember, this process is not a sprint, it’s a marathon and you need to partner with a full-service, high-quality team of experts. Read on to see how a quality distributor might help turn your vision or plan into a viable, profitable reality.

LOCATION SELECTION AND ESTIMATING SALES VOLUME

Early on, your distributor works closely with you to evaluate any potential sites for your new vended laundry by analyzing competition, traffic flow, visibility and demographics. Distributors understand their local markets well and will be able to tell you if the factors I mentioned are favorable for success.

Once a site looks solid, your distributor should then estimate your laundry’s sales potential by applying value to your demographic data, competition, equipment mix and utility costs, etc. This tells you whether or not you move forward with that location.

EQUIPMENT MIX, UTILITIES, AND MORE

Once the location is a go, your distributor works to conceptualize your store’s equipment mix, payment system, utilities, customer space and design in order to provide a financial snapshot to you and the lender.

In doing so, a good distributor will take you through equipment sizes, types and performance levels, while factoring in criteria like efficiency, accessibility, g-force and programmability. Together, if your business model calls for it, you’ll plan space for additional services/revenue streams, including vending, drop-off wash/dry/fold, dry cleaning, commercial laundry services, and pickup and delivery, among others.

Remember, by planning for and offering additional services, a vended laundry can often better penetrate its demographic and serve a wider variety of customers, generate bolstered revenue, and better utilize employees.

Moreover, added services can help your business better utilize the unused capacity of your laundry, which makes you less reliant on only the walk-in customer. Finally, your distributor should provide detailed line drawings of the laundry.

PROFORMA SUMMARY AND FINANCING

At this step, good distributors can take all this data and generate a proforma, or cashflow summary. This is a financial statement that overviews a new laundry’s capital outlay, return on investment, wash and dry income, services income, taxable income, losses, expenses, and more. This summary is essential to securing favorable financing and is submitted along with a detailed Laundromat site plan, competitive analysis and equipment proposal to lenders by your distributor.

As a side note, most distributors work with lenders familiar with the laundry business, which often becomes critical to getting funded. This lender becomes a key partner and long-term ally, just like the distributor. Make sure you get to know them as you would your distributor.

LAUNDRY BUILDOUT

Once financing is approved, you and your distributor will typically engage an architect and a general contrac-

tor to perform necessary plans, process for permits and build out your space. The general contractor coordinates subcontractors, and your distributor provides all your store’s laundry equipment, laundry carts, vending machines, electronic payment systems, etc.

MARKETING

This is the point where you start marketing your new vended laundry. Some distributors can help you in this arena, as well. If you’re lucky, your distributor might partner with an advertising agency that specializes in vended laundry with affordable marketing packages tailored to new store development. If so, you might gain access to help with branding and logo development, signage, door hangers, websites, social media management, public relations and grand openings.

TRAINING

When the laundry is complete — or nearly complete — some distributors provide training on maintaining equipment, operating machines, programming machines, serving customers and providing services such as wash/dry/fold. Most will gladly share their knowledge. Some distributors offer hands-on training at existing

laundries and provide services like hiring and training attendants, as well as offering preventative maintenance schedules and service contracts. After all, they want you to be successful.

AFTER-THE-SALES SERVICES

Of course, a quality distributor also delivers after-sale services, including preventative maintenance, technical repairs, replacement parts and replacement equipment.

Some host events and seminars where vended laundry owners are briefed on industry trends and technology. Such events are great venues for swapping ideas; learning ways to improve efficiencies and profits; connecting with industry experts; and examining new technology or programming.

Finally, your distributor business partner should always be looking for ways to help improve your profits — whether it’s two, five, 10 or 15 years down the road!

LAUNDRYLUX ACQUIRES DISTRIBUTORS GOLDEN STATE LAUNDRY SYSTEMS, CESCO NW

Laundrylux, the North American supplier of Electrolux and Wascomat laundry equipment, has acquired the assets of California-based distributor Golden State Laundry Systems and of Washington-based distributor CESCO NW in separate deals. Terms were not disclosed.

Golden State Laundry Systems has been a California commercial laundry distributor since 1954, supporting its sales through a fully stocked parts department, factory-trained service technicians, preventive/corrective maintenance programs, store construction, and other services.

“We have had a long, successful relationship with Laundrylux,” says Golden State President Mike Hurrell, “and to participate financially in Laundrylux’s acquisitions and consolidation of professional laundry distribution is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“CESCO goes back decades with Wascomat and Electrolux professional laundry, so this makes perfect sense,” says CESCO President Rich Boyd. “I welcome the opportunity to become an investor in Laundrylux’s consolidation of multi-brand professional laundry distribution nationwide. The future is here and I’m excited to be part of it!”

“We have announced two acquisitions, with many more in development, and every transaction includes experienced management continuing to run their business,” says Neal Milch, Laundrylux executive chairman. “With access to Laundrylux’s many resources and capabilities, we are confident even greater success is assured.”

Laundrylux says it is the largest integrated independent distributor of professional laundry equipment in the world, with 65 years of experience in distribution; product and technology development; financing; equipment leasing; coin-op laundry development; on-premise laundry development; and wet cleaning. It currently serves the U.S., Canadian and Mexican markets.

FREE LAUNDRY DAYS ... IT’S IN THE BAG

The laundry bags may be cut, sewn and printed in Lawrence, Massachusetts, but they are shipped to laundry centers across the country as part of Spector Textile Products’ ongoing sponsorship of Free Laundry Days offered by the Coin Laundry Association’s (CLA) LaundryCares Foundation.

Since 2017, laundry bags have been distributed to sponsored events in Elizabeth, New Jersey; Philadelphia; Las Vegas; Irvington, New Jersey; and Baltimore.

The LaundryCares initiative is an effort to give back to the communities in which CLA members live and work by providing free laundry for a day, and promoting childhood literacy and learning.

“We know that the hundreds of our laundry bag products donated to this effort are just a small part of a larger effort to reach out to communities throughout the country through this

initiative, and we are honored to participate in such a successful project,” says Howard Spector, president of Spector Textile Products.

Other LaundryCares sponsors, according to the CLA, include Alliance Laundry Systems, Dexter Laundry, Eastern Funding, ESD, Vend-Rite and Whirlpool.

ALLIANCE LAUNDRY SYSTEMS TO ACQUIRE DISTRIBUTOR CLEC Alliance Laundry Systems reports it has reached an agreement to purchase distributor Commercial & Coin Laundry Equipment Co. (CLEC). At press time, the deal was expected to be finalized for closing in early March; terms were not announced.

Headquartered in Gulf Breeze, Florida, CLEC recently expanded into the Texas market and stands as one of the largest commercial laundry equipment distributors in the Southeast, Alliance says.

“We are delighted to partner with a best-in-class operator, whose energy, passion and leadership are natural complements to Alliance Laundry Systems,” says Mike Schoeb, Alliance CEO. “Furthermore, the laundry industry is undergoing a period of change and having a more direct presence makes sense in today’s market.”

CLEC has been serving the needs of commercial laundry customers since 1982. The company’s coverage area includes the Florida panhandle, Mississippi Gulf Coast, and parts of Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana.

In February 2018, the company purchased Texas Laundry Service Co., adding the greater Houston area to its territory. It was CLEC’s third acquisition in eight years.

EVI INDUSTRIES PURCHASES FELLOW DISTRIBUTOR PAC INDUSTRIES

Commercial laundry and drycleaning equipment distributor EVI Industries (formerly EnviroStar Inc.), based in Miami, has acquired fellow distributor PAC Industries at a cost of $12.85 million.

EVI acquired all of the outstanding shares of PAC’s common stock as part of the agreement. Of the purchase price, $6.4 million was paid in cash, $6.25 million in EVI common stock, and $0.2 million in an assumed subordinated note.

Based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, PAC is a prominent distributor of commercial, industrial, and vended laundry products and a provider of related installation and maintenance services to the new and replacement markets of the laundry industry.

For the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2018, PAC generated approximately $22.0 million in revenue from the sale of equipment, parts, supplies, and related installation and maintenance services, EVI reports.

PAC will operate as an EVI subsidiary from its present locations, under its existing leadership, and conduct business as it has historically, in line with EVI’s operating philosophy.

“On behalf of all of the employees and owners of PAC, we are thrilled to join the EVI family and are anxious to begin working toward accomplishing our collective long-term goals,” says Frank Costabile, president of PAC.

The acquisition of PAC is EVI’s first in the Northeast, where the company expects to aggressively continue executing its buyand-build growth strategy.

EVI also owns Washington Automated, Skyline Equipment, Worldwide Laundry, Industrial Laundry Services, Scott Equipment, Aadvantage Laundry Systems, Tri-State Technical Services, Martin-Ray Laundry Systems and Western State Design, all distributor acquisitions made since fall 2016.

ELECTROLUX, LAUNDRYLUX TO COLLABORATE IN PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Electrolux Professional, the $1 billion professional products division of global appliances manufacturer Electrolux, says it is collaborating with Laundrylux, the North American importer and distributor of Wascomat and Electrolux branded professional laundry equipment, to develop new products and integrated technologies and applications for the coin laundry and on-premise laundry (OPL) markets.

“Electrolux is committed to developing next-generation solu-

tions optimized for the markets and segments we serve globally in Professional Laundry,” says John Evans, head of the Americas for Electrolux. “Laundrylux, our largest partner, has tremendous knowledge of the North American market and is expanding its reach with strategic acquisitions. We will support Laundrylux’s important initiative by devoting R&D resources with the specific intention of optimizing our solutions for North America.”

“We have worked closely with Electrolux Professional for decades. Now, the tight integration of products, applications, and data analytics requires an even closer collaboration,” says Neal Milch, Laundrylux executive chairman. “Electrolux is developing integrated solutions throughout its appliances and professional products businesses, and we are excited to bring these to the North American professional laundry market.”

Electrolux and Laundrylux will “debut these innovations” at the Clean Show in New Orleans in June, according to Milch.

GIMESON JOINS WASH MULTIFAMILY LAUNDRY SYSTEMS AS CEO Laundry facilities management service company WASH Multifamily Laundry Systems reports that Jim Gimeson has been appointed its CEO. An accomplished leader with decades of experience, Gimeson will focus on strengthening the WASH brand, and driving consumer and industry engagement, while guiding the long-term strategic expansion of the business, WASH says.

Accustomed to working in high-growth transformational environments, Gimeson has been highly successful in repositioning businesses, leading them through strategic initiatives, expanding service lines, and driving growth through mergers and acquisitions, WASH says.

“While positioning the company for expansion, among my top priorities will be broadening our commercial and consumer offerings through business development, enhancing digital capabilities, and continuing to introduce techforward solutions to elevate the overall customer experience,” says Gimeson.
