‘SHOE-IN’ FOR SUCCESS

If you will be attending Clean 2019 in New Orleans next month, I would argue that your most important tool will be a comfortable pair of shoes.

That’s what I remember about my first Clean Show in 2001, also in the Big Easy. “I was struck by the sheer size of the massive Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and, comfortable shoes or not, my feet were ‘struck,’ too,” I wrote back then for sister publication American Laundry News.

Just like that show, Clean 2019 will feature 420-plus exhibitors spread over a couple hundred thousand square feet and then some. You’re going to be doing some walking while there.

But the exertion will be oh-so-worth-it because where else can you see every major laundry equipment manufacturer display their latest machinery under one roof? Compare wash/dry/fold management software or on-demand laundry apps from multiple vendors? Locate suppliers for your bulk vended goods?

And that doesn’t take into account the 30 hours of educational sessions from which you can choose, or the networking opportunities you’ll find.

The Clean Show has a lot of “moving parts,” and that’s why this issue will come in handy for you. Aside from our show preview, you’ll find a list of the companies and organizations that have reserved exhibit space, plus basic descriptions of their products and/or services and their booth numbers. We also have the full schedule of educational sessions and class descriptions to help you decide which to attend.

No, we can’t take any steps off your fitness tracker, but we will make every single one of them count by helping you chart an educated and efficient path to Clean Show success. Let the good times roll!

CLEAN SHOW OFFERS MUCH TO THOSE WHO ATTEND

More than 47% of the coin laundry owners and operators polled in this quarter’s American Coin-Op Your Views survey say they plan to attend the June 20-23 Clean Show in New Orleans.

Roughly 26% have decided that they will not attend the biennial trade show, and the remaining 26.4% were unsure at the time of the unscientific survey.

Whether attending or not, 52.8% say the biggest factor in favor of visiting New Orleans is all that it has to offer: exhibits of equipment, systems and supplies; educational sessions; networking and socializing; and combining business and pleasure.

Nearly 34% say the biggest draw is the exhibits. About 8% say combining business and pleasure is the biggest factor, while the remaining 5.7% say it’s networking and socializing.

There will be 30 hours of educational programming during Clean and the Coin Laundry Association is sponsoring several sessions. Of those, the topic generating the most interest among survey respondents (69.2%) is Laundromat Lifecycles: Planning for the Future. Next is Wash-Dry-Fold 2.0: What’s Next for Full-Service Laundry? (53.9%), followed by Due Diligence: Preparing to Buy (or Sell) Your Next Laundromat (50%).

There will also be several “general sessions” during Clean. Survey respondents are most interested in Social Media Marketing & Measurement (74%), Helpful Business Apps (58%), Competing in Tough Job Market – Importance of Screening & Training (38%) and Tips for Entering the Commercial Laundry Industry (36%).

Store owners and operators who’ve attended the Clean Show were asked, “If you had one tip to share with a first-timer, what would it be?” Here are some of the responses:

• “Be prepared to walk all day, and plan for more time on the floor than you think.”

• “Attending is motivational. It’s a great time to meet other owners in a neutral setting.”

• “Take time to learn about new products. The industry is rapidly changing and owners can no longer assume they ‘know it all’ and (that) new ideas won’t work.”

• “Prepare ahead of time for what areas you particularly want to focus on, otherwise, the amount of exhibitors and activity will confuse you.”

• “Make good use of the training sessions. There is so much to learn.”

• “Plan on attending at least two days. We always go back day two or three and are amazed how much we missed on our first time through.”

American Coin-Op’s Your Views survey presents an unscientific snapshot of the trade audience’s viewpoints at a particular moment. Percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding. ACO

Textile Care Industry Ready for

CLEAN ’19

Biennial event to build on past in New Orleans, step into the future

When the Clean Show once again occupies the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center June 20-23, it will be an event of firsts and lasts.

For some attendees, it will be their first experience of the biennial event formally known as the World Educational Congress for Laundering and Drycleaning.

It will also be the first Clean Show under new ownership in its 42nd year.

In December, Germany-based Messe Frankfurt, an international trade fair, congress and event organizer—the largest in the textile care industry—purchased the Clean Show from the five sponsoring associations: Association for Linen Management (ALM), Coin Laundry Association (CLA), Drycleaning and Laundry Institute (DLI), Textile Care Allied Trades Association (TCATA) and TRSA, the association for linen, uniform and facility services.

As part of the acquisition, the sponsor associations will maintain their close involvement with the show, and Messe Frankfurt aims to continue the Clean Show success story.

“We look forward to this first Clean Show under the ownership of Messe Frankfurt, whose portfolio of laundry trade shows includes Texcare International in Frankfurt, Germany, and its expansion into China with Texcare Asia and the United Arab Emirates with Middle East Cleaning Technology Week, as well as global Texcare Forums,” says Joseph Ricci, president and CEO of TRSA, and chairman

of Clean ’19.

While this marks the first Clean Show under Messe Frankfurt ownership, Clean ’19 will be the last organized and managed by Atlanta-based Riddle & Associates.

The collaboration and management between the sponsoring associations and Riddle & Associates helped put the Clean Show on Trade Show Executive magazine’s 50 Fastest-Growing Shows and the Trade Show News Network Top 100 shows, as well as being the largest textile services and care show in the world, Riddle shares.

“It has been a pleasure to work with John Riddle of Riddle & Associates, which has managed the show since 1993,” says Ricci. “John had indicated several years ago that he would be retiring from fulltime event management following the 2019

Clean Show. We salute John and his staff for their excellent service to the show sponsors and our attendees.”

(Read a profile of John Riddle beginning on page 14.)

Riddle & Associates says Clean 2019 will provide a platform for all industry professionals and companies to come together on the show floor to share ideas, technologies, education, and networking.

LEARN, WORK, SUCCEED

According to Riddle & Associates, Clean Show attendees include store owners, plant operators, technicians, institutional laundry managers, distributors, consultants and buyers.

The largest share (94%) of attendees are business owners, executives or manag-

ers, according to a past Clean Show survey by Riddle & Associates.

The show organizer says for companies looking to expand, re-educate or upgrade current technology, the exhibit floor is where they should be.

“I think everyone who is in some form of the textile care industry, whether it be laundry, dry cleaning, textile rental, coinop, etc., I think you’re going to be very happy,” says John Riddle, who personally assisted with several Clean Shows before his firm was contracted in ’93. “We had a great show in ’17 in Las Vegas, and New Orleans is right there with it, right now.”

The June 2017 Las Vegas Clean Show was named one of Trade Show Executive’s 50 Fastest-Growing shows of 2017. The show was honored in all three categories of the awards competition: net square feet of exhibit space, number of exhibiting companies and total attendance. Riddle & Associates says Clean attracted 12,563 visitors (including 2,282 people from 101 foreign countries and overseas territories) and 481 exhibitors in 227,006 square feet of space to Las Vegas in 2017.

At press time, more than 420 exhibitors are signed up to be in New Orleans, with more than 211,000 square feet of exhibit space sold (a full list of exhibitors at Clean ’19, as of April 5, begins on page 18).

“You’re going to see an awful lot of exhibitors,” John Riddle shares. “New things are coming that you will be pleased to see. Our attendance is holding up. Based on what I know in the years I’ve done this is that we can look for a good show, and as always you can come and actually see equipment work.”

Exhibits featuring equipment, products and services will be on display in Convention Center halls B-F.

“Exhibit sales and hotel room blocks are ahead of previous Clean Shows in New Orleans, demonstrating the strength of the event and the industry as a must-attend opportunity for researching solutions and information-sharing,” adds Ricci. “I am thrilled with the support of our exhibitors, including their commitment to innovation and introduction of new products and services that increase productivity and safety.”

Riddle says he’s proud of the fact that when industry professionals come to the Clean Show, they get a chance to see the equipment they’re contemplating buying in operation.

“It becomes very expensive for an exhibitor to bring a tunnel washer or a big washer or extractor to the show,” Riddle points out. “Just the cost alone of getting it there [is great], then you have the time and materials and the money, if you will, to fire them up, and then run them and show the

“Our package plan for exhibitors is such that it has enabled the exhibitor to actually come and operate the equipment in a costeffective manner so that the attendee gets the advantage of that. You don’t just see one side of a presentation; you can look at multiple pieces of equipment operate under one roof, generally within a couple hundred feet of each other. That demonstration alone is worth the trip.”

Attendees also have the opportunity to take advantage of 30 hours of educational sessions. Riddle & Associates says sessions include topics such as training, business management and environmental issues.

Morning sessions, which run between 8 and 10 a.m. on show days, will take place in on-site meeting rooms. Afternoon sessions will be held in the exhibit hall (a full schedule, along with brief descriptions of each session, begins on page 38).

“This combination has already strengthened the Clean Show as a platform for industry professionals and suppliers to work, learn and succeed together,” Ricci says. “Make the most of your time here and you will find no better place to share ideas and grasp trends and technologies, show after show.”

The Clean Show has also developed with the times and has a strong social

media presence. Attendees and exhibitors can get updates on the upcoming show, registration and Clean Show facts on its Facebook and Twitter pages, says Riddle & Associates.

As social media takes a larger role in communication, Riddle & Associates says the Clean Show interacts with attendees and can answer questions on social media platforms to better engage with its followers.

Attendees sharing their Clean Show experience in New Orleans are encouraged to use the handles #Clean2019 and @thecleanshow so others can easily find messages, photos and information related to the show.

In addition, Riddle & Associates says attendees can use the Clean Show 2019 My Planner (available through the show website and mobile app) to organize show floor visits.

THERE’S STILL TIME

Connections Housing (http://www. connections-housing.com/LandingPage/ Clean2019.php) is Clean 2019’s only official housing agency. Check the website for room availability; May 20 is the show’s housing reservation deadline.

Industry professionals still interested in attending Clean ’19 can take advantage of pre-registration discounts on the show’s

website (www.cleanshow.com) through June 10. The pre-registration fee is $119 per person for any member of one of the sponsoring associations, and $149 for nonmembers. After June 10, attendees must register onsite at the Convention Center for a fee of $169 per person.

Registration hours will be 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19; 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily Thursday through Saturday, June 20-22; and 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.

The show starts June 20, when attendees will be able to explore the exhibits 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. (distributors have exclusive access from 8 to 10 that morning).

The show floor opens at 9 a.m. Friday through Sunday (June 21-23) and closes at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday (June 21-22) and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.

On show days, the Clean Show will provide a complimentary shuttle between most official hotels and the Convention Center, according to Riddle & Associates.

Several U.S. cities have hosted Clean over the years. The first two shows were in Chicago, where it has been held four times. New Orleans is hosting for the sixth time, tied with Las Vegas. Atlanta follows closely behind Chicago with three shows. Orlando has hosted twice and Dallas once.

10 Ways to Make Clean ’19 Work for You

At the world’s largest exhibition and education platform for the textile care industry, it is difficult to see and do everything at Clean 2019, but most people who attend have specific things they want to accomplish.

Planning ahead can give you a solid return on your investment of time and money and help keep your business running smoothly. Here are 10 ideas from Riddle & Associates for maximizing your Clean 2019 visit:

Set specific goals. What do you want to accomplish? Is it purchasing or upgrading equipment, learning about new technologies, finding a solution to a business problem, or interacting with colleagues and friends? Prioritize what is important to you.

Develop an action plan. Search the Clean Show website (www.cleanshow.com) for the exhibitors and education that interest you most. Add these to

your itinerary. Check the floor plan to locate the booths you want to visit. It will keep you on track and ensure that you meet your primary goals.

Learn in the classroom. Take advantage of the many educational sessions that are pertinent in today’s market. The morning classroom sessions and afternoon exhibit-floor sessions cover a multitude of industry-related topics for all industry segments.

You would pay hundreds of dollars for these sessions in another setting, but they are included in the Clean Show registration fee. Check the website for session listings and add those of interest to your itinerary.

Make appointments. For a product you are particularly interested in seeing, make advance appointments with the exhibitors of that product. This ensures that you will get one-onone time.

Don’t miss the new stuff. Leave enough time in your plan

(June 2021) and Orlando (May 2023).

“The Clean Show is the culmination of nearly 24 months of collaboration and hard work between the sponsoring associations that represent nearly every market and demographic of the textile care and textile services industries, from small local, singlefacility or store operations to regional, national and even international companies and show management,” says Ricci.

The sponsoring associations and Riddle & Associates have worked hard to ensure Clean ’19 will touch on all aspects of the industry in New Orleans, creating a solid foundation for the future.

“The Clean Show absolutely addresses every sector of the textile care industry,” says Riddle, “whether you’re operating in the coin laundry environment, if you’re operating in laundry, dry cleaning, commercial/industrial laundry, or if you’re in textile rental, whether it be uniforms or linens, etc., software, hangers, computers, everything that one needs to be in this business for all sectors is there.

“This is not just a laundry show, or a rental show, or a ‘this’ show or a ‘that’ show. This show really covers the entire industry called textile care.” ACO

to visit as many booths as possible beyond your original plan. See what is new and exciting, and don’t miss the small booths. You might find a something that is just right for your operation. Join the discussion. If you participate in Facebook or Twitter, connect with the Clean Show so you can be up to date on anything from Clean 2019 news to interesting facts about New Orleans.

Write it down. When the show is over, it can all seem like a jumble of information. Listening carefully and documenting important points in education sessions or exhibitor conversations can be invaluable in reviewing and analyzing your show experience. Use your phone or iPad to type notes, or write in a notebook or on the back of business cards for later reference.

Dress for comfort. New Orleans can get hot and humid in June. Wear light clothes and

comfortable walking shoes. You will walk miles on the exhibit floor. Travel light; carry only what you absolutely need. Certain exhibitors offer bags for carrying items you pick up along the way. If you gather too much literature, you can mail it home from the building’s business center.

Have some fun. New Orleans has a lot to see and do. Take a stroll around the worldfamous French Quarter or take a ride on a streetcar to visit the renowned Garden District. See what’s new in the Warehouse District. In the evenings, enjoy the region’s outstanding cuisine and the jazz music that plays on every corner.

Educate your co-workers. When you return home, share your new knowledge with coworkers who did not attend. They will feel like they had a part in it and can apply the information to make your entire operation go smoothly. ACO

The Man Behind the Clean Show

Decades-long connection coming to end for event manager Riddle

President John Riddle and his staff at longtime Clean Show management firm Riddle & Associates are experiencing many “lasts” in the days leading up to Clean 2019 in New Orleans.

You see, Germany-based trade fair organizer Messe Frankfurt recently purchased Clean from the five associations that have sponsored the show for decades. The New Orleans show in June will be the last managed by Riddle & Associates, which has overseen the every-other-year event under contract since 1992.

John Riddle’s personal involvement in assisting with Clean dates back to 1981.

We visited Riddle, 78, in his Atlanta offices in late March to talk about the upcoming show, but also took the opportunity to quiz him on his storied past and to find out what he’s planning in semiretirement.

“We had a great show in ’17 in Las Vegas, and New Orleans is right there with it right now,” he says. “Based on what I know and the years I’ve done this, I’m going to say that we can look for a good show, and, as always, you can come and actually see equipment work.”

Riddle says that aspect of the show is unique, due to the costs of shipping, setting up, and operating laundry and drycleaning equipment in a convention setting.

“We have … our package plan for exhibitor services (and) is such that it has enabled the exhibitor to actually come and operate his equipment in a cost-effective manner so that the attendee gets the advantage of that.”

Among the trade media that publicize and cover the Clean Show, Riddle is wellknown for shedding a tear or two in appreciation during the press reception that is a tradition as soon as the exhibit floor closes on the opening day.

So, if he’s already prone to becoming emotional in that setting, how will he react knowing that Clean 2019 will be the last time he’ll greet the media?

“It is an emotional thing for me to

acknowledge the fact that this will be the last show that I do,” Riddle says. “I hope it won’t be the last I attend but this will be the last one in which I am in charge of it. I’ve been blessed to have been involved in this great industry since 1981.”

Riddle’s age and his desire to spend more time with family played significant factors in deciding that it was time to step aside and enjoy his golden years in a trout stream or on a golf course instead of on a show floor at 5:30 in the morning.

“We all have to say, ‘It’s time.’ I think it’s time for me particularly to do that. It’s been an honor for me and for everybody in our organization to be associated with such great people.”

CIRCLING THE BASES

Organizing a trade show requires relationship-building and teamwork, both of which have been at the heart of Riddle’s personal and professional growth.

He grew up in the cotton mill town of Kannapolis, N.C., the youngest son of a police officer and a 1st grade school teacher. You “made your own fun” in those days, he recalls, and he was drawn to team sports, especially baseball. In fact, he dreamed of playing professionally someday.

After graduating high school, he left home to attend Mars Hill Junior College and later Campbell College. At Mars Hill, he was an All-Conference and All-

American first baseman in 1956 and 1957 (he was named to the school’s Hall of Fame in 1988).

At a time when there were only 16 teams in Major League Baseball, Riddle was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a center fielder in 1962. After four years, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox organization.

“I had the chance to play for (managers) Earl Weaver, Billy Hunter, Cal Ripken Sr.,” Riddle recalls. “I played with Lou Pinella, Jim Palmer, Mark Belanger, Davey Johnson, a number of people that some will know and some won’t know.”

As a 21-year-old rookie playing for Bluefield, he slugged 16 home runs and drove in 61 runs in just 66 games, earning him Appalachian League All-Star honors. Working his way up, he also earned AllStar nods in the Class A California and Class AA Eastern leagues.

“If you ever saw (the movie) Bull Durham, you saw what minor league baseball was like,” he says. “Even when I got into Triple-A ball, we got out of yellowback school buses and old Greyhound buses, riding all over the Dakotas, Midwest, the Upper Midwest, in white Edsel station wagons.

“There’s no time you can imagine, being

with a group of guys at 2 o’clock in the morning, riding in a bus on a highway somewhere, dark, not a care in the world, and you’re going to go play a baseball game. That’s strong.”

But with so few MLB roster spots available, an Achilles injury suffered on the base paths, and other circumstances, he never made it to the “Show” … as a player.

FRONT OFFICE FOUNDATION

Riddle had done some offseason work for the Atlanta Braves, which had relocated there from Milwaukee in 1966: “I was part of a team of ballplayers that were in the area who helped sell season tickets, did some PR for them.”

With a wife and a young son at home, he decided to leave his playing days behind and pursue a career of some sort. One day, he visited some friends at the stadium and was surprised to leave there as the Braves director of operations.

“I told the gentleman who hired me, a good friend of mine, ‘I don’t know anything at all about operations of a stadium,” Riddle says. “We laughed, we cut up, and he said, ‘Don’t worry, we’ll teach you.’”

From there, he was promoted to director of advertising sales, plus he was promotions director for the newly formed Atlanta Chiefs soccer club owned by the Braves. He left there in 1975 to become the general manager of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“I had the No. 2 position there. My job was to run the Convention Bureau on a daily basis. It’s a big promotion, in multiple ways, of a municipality.”

He left the CVB after about two years to enter into business for himself, owning several retail businesses in Atlanta, including one shop that became famous for its link to a line of dolls that became a 1980s toy fad.

“I had a retail store in downtown Atlanta in Peachtree Center. It was called Terminus Gift Shop,” Riddle recalls. “It was the first store in Atlanta in which the local Georgia artisans had an outlet.”

At a regional art festival, Riddle met Xavier Roberts, who was creating soft sculpture dolls he called “The Little People,” dressing them in used children’s clothing and offering them up for “adoption.” Riddle asked if his gift shop could become an “adoption center”: “I was No. 1. People went absolutely nuts over this. … That put Terminus Gift Shop, really, on the map.”

Soon thereafter, Coleco licensed the doll

line as the Cabbage Patch Kids that caused shopper riots in the early ’80s and have delighted children and collectors for years.

Another unique endeavor for Riddle was rodeo promotion. With a friend he’d met through Terminus, he became interested in roping cattle: “I was 42, got on my first horse in a long time, and the bug bit me.”

Riddle was at an Atlanta restaurant one day when a friend, Spurgeon Richardson, then the president of Six Flags Over Texas, spotted him in his Western garb. The two got to talking and Richardson asked Riddle if he could produce a rodeo for the amusement park. Despite having no such experience, he said yes.

“Then, the journey began to find a stock contractor,” Riddle says. “And we did, Preston Folks. We produced rodeos for Six Flags for nine years. Sometime, if you really want to have some fun, we’ll talk about the day we were putting bulls in the arena to feed them for the performance the next day and they got out.”

In the years since, Riddle has learned that it’s much easier to rope attendees than steers.

THE EXHIBITION GAME

When he worked at the Atlanta CVB in the mid-1970s, he booked a National Association of Music Merchants show for the new Georgia World Congress Center.

Dexter: Years and Still Going Strong

W.H.

George

2019 marks the 125th anniversary of equipment manufacturer Dexter Laundry. Established in the tiny town of Dexter, Iowa, in 1894, Dexter Laundry and its founding community both drew their name from the same unusual source: a championship racehorse.

Known for his unparalleled performance and noble appearance, the equine Dexter was a national sensation, serving as the perfect symbol for American power and speed. Like the thoroughbred, Dexter washing machines were fast and efficient. Inventor W.H. George designed them that way. He wanted a washer that could be run hard and always stay a step ahead of the competition.

As his young company grew and more people began requesting Dexter washers in their homes, George realized that his original facilities couldn’t keep up with the demand. Dexter needed a new place where it could grow. So, George decided it

founded laundry equipment maker in 1894

was time to look for a new home. Because he was seeking a large manufacturing space for the growing business, the laundry inventor planned a nationwide search. However, his extensive travel itinerary proved unnecessary when he visited the nearby town of Fairfield, Iowa.

A budding rural community of nearly 5,000 people, Fairfield was located at the intersection of north/south and east/west railroads, an ideal spot for a company looking to ship and receive large quantities of materials. Though he didn’t know it at the time, the structure and facilities George built in Fairfield would become home to the Dexter legacy for more than a century to come.

Constructing its new home in a smaller community gave the young company several surprising advantages. Skilled employees living in Fairfield worked with the company for years and used their experience and expertise to build a better brand of washer. The new Dexter factory

offered ideal working conditions, modern machinery and equipment. Within these carefully planned working conditions, the workmen thrived, producing a superior line of washers and standing behind them with a guarantee of fine workmanship.

Dexter didn’t outsource work either. Every step in the fabrication of Dexter washers, from the casting of the gray iron to the finished product itself, was done in the Fairfield facilities. This allowed for complete control of the quality and craftsmanship of every Dexter product — something the company still prides itself on today.

“Every product sold under the Dexter name is built by skilled craftsmen in our facility in Fairfield, Iowa, and every product built in Fairfield bears the Dexter name,” says Doug Kuehl, director of manufacturing and supply chain. “Controlling the production process gives us the ability to build quality into every design. I’m proud that my efforts go to building great

running strong, even in the toughest of times. The economic downturn of the Great Depression rocked the United States and the world throughout the 1930s, but Dexter fought back with custom payment plans and new lower-priced models. Dexter’s management knew that, more than ever, people needed performance that they could depend on.

A decade later, during World War II, Dexter’s performance was called on again to help American troops at home and overseas. The U.S. government used the facilities in Fairfield to produce

important defense equipment and washers for soldiers in American camps.

“Dexter has always been built in the heart of America by proud men and women. As a veteran, I’m personally proud of the actions the company took during WWII,” says Dexter Laundry President Craig Kirchner. “Not only did we stop production of our core business, our community and employees rallied around the troops to support the war effort.”

In the years after the war, Dexter doubled down on its emphasis on innovation, with the release of the 20-pound automatic washing machine. This innovative design led the industry and had customers across the commercial laundry market

raving about its performance. In fact, the machine was so successful that Dexter permanently reoriented its focus to serve customers in commercial settings all over the world.

Since that first 20-pound machine, employees in Fairfield have dedicated themselves to building an ever-evolving collection of products to carry on the Dexter name. The washers that customers enjoy today are a direct result of that dedication. From the T-300 20-pound washer to the T-1450 Express, Dexter now produces a range of elite products for both vended and on-premise laundry. These products offer traditional Dexter craftsmanship paired with a new generation of technology and control.

That next generation is highlighted by DexterLive — the industry’s first cloud-based store management service. DexterLive enables owners to manage their business by tracking machine usage and revenue, setting promotions, programming machines and running state-ofthe-art reports that enable owners to make smart business decisions. Plus, Dexter says it is committed to continuing to invest in DexterLive, meaning the system today will continue to get better and better.

“The founders of our company were committed to one thing — helping people process laundry faster and more efficiently by building the best-quality laundry equipment in the world,” Kirchner says. “DexterLive is just another evolution of

Turning

that commitment. With access to excellent information, easy programming and stateof-the art reporting, DexterLive can help owners build better businesses.”

Though technology has changed over the last century, Dexter’s commitment to quality and service remains the same. The company still builds a wide range of washers and dryers, and each machine is made with the customer in mind.

“Today, it isn’t just about a quality product, it’s also about quality service,” Kirchner says. “That’s why we continue to offer lifetime technical support and the industry’s best warranty, and we are doing this from the heart of America. I’m proud to say that after 125 years, Dexter Laundry is still going strong.”

Multi-store Owner Performs

Jaeger buys, revives struggling store through equipment, operational changes Laundry CPR

Can I take an existing store that’s failing and make it work?”

Art Jaeger recalls asking prior to purchasing what is now Valencia (Calif.) Express Laundry. “Does a good operator really make a difference?”

Jaeger, a multi-store owner and developer, ultimately decided to give it a go. Eleven months later, after a light renovation, he says the laundry generates 50% more revenue and, for the first time, offers a growing drop-off wash/dry/fold service.

BUILDING OFF ‘SOLID BONES’

While Jaeger saw an array of hurdles holding the laundry back, he believed it had solid bones. It touted a CCI Laundry Card electronic payment system and was equipped mostly with Continental highspeed laundry equipment, which he was happy about.

“I felt the store was well done in mate-

rials use and it had Continental laundry equipment, which I’m very comfortable with,” Jaeger says. “But it wasn’t finished

properly, it wasn’t properly maintained, the customer service was extremely poor, and there was absolutely no marketing— not even interior signage.”

An attendant working there was a detriment to the store, according to Jaeger: “He was turning people off, scaring them off and moving them out.”

Jaeger went to work. The day after he signed for ownership, he fired that attendant, then closed the store for five weeks for renovations.

Many of the improvements were simple. Jaeger replaced 144 fluorescent bulbs, each offering 1,100 lumens, with LED bulbs at 4,800 lumens each. He painted the black ceiling white and removed the exterior window tinting to bring in light. He also replaced a rear steel door with a glass storefront door, which better illuminated the laundry and allowed customers the option of entering or exiting through the front or back.

Clinton and the Coalition unveiled a new playful learning space at the Wash Time Laundry on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago. Clinton then read Too Small to Fail’s newly released children’s book DJ’s Busy Day.

Dr. Susan Neuman, professor of childhood and literacy education at New York University, presented the results of an evaluation on the effectiveness of “Family

Read & Play Spaces” piloted in three New York City Laundromats.

The findings show that the designated spaces significantly enhanced children’s time spent on literacy-rich activities, parents observed librarians modeling literacy activities and expressed their enthusiasm, and customers overwhelmingly expressed their enthusiasm for the literacy space and said they chose to come to that specific Laundromat because of it.

The LaundryCares Foundation has committed to expanding the “Family Read & Play Spaces” into 600 new locations by March 2020 (250 local Laundromats have already committed to integrating these spaces into their stores).

Also, the Coin Laundry Association will promote them as a basic component of future Laundromat designs by sharing sample layouts with equipment manufacturers, distributors, and member laundries. ACO

Jaeger brought in seating, which had been nonexistent before. A dozen table benches, four of which fronted the bulkheads, were added along with electronics charging stations. He debuted free Wi-Fi, flatscreen TVs with programming, and interior signage where there were none before. And unbelievable as it may seem, the laundry didn’t have a telephone.

Jaeger tidied the manager’s officer, added a surveillance camera and alarm system, and reconfigured the vending machines.

EQUIPPING FOR SUCCESS

On the equipment side, he moved his big, 75-pound Continental Dryers to the front of the store for improved customer visibility, and added 20-pound Continental ExpressWash washers to the mix.

When finished, Valencia Express Laundry showcased 10 22-pound LG Commercial Washers; 20 20-pound Continental ExpressWash Washers; 10 40-pound Continental ExpressWash Washers; eight 55-pound Continental G-Flex Washers; four 75-pound Continental PowerLoad Washers; 11 30-pound, dual-pocket stack Continental Dryers; 11 45-pound, dualpocket stack Continental Dryers; and four 75-pound Continental Dryers.

Meanwhile, all machinery was thoroughly cleaned, maintained and repaired.

“None of the lint trays or soap dishes had ever been cleaned before,” Jaeger says.

Finally, he brought experienced attendants into the laundry to train those who were newly hired. He also launched full-service drop-off wash/dry/fold.

SUMMER OPENING

Valencia Express Laundry remained

open during renovations, which were completed in June 2018.

Eager to spread the word about the new, improved store, Jaeger hit marketing hard.

He and his daughter, Natalie, hosted a grand opening and utilized social media, signage, banners, promotions, direct mail and the web to remarket the store and regain its reputation in the community.

“I had developed all my other laundries from scratch, in a neutral position, where customers were excited about our entry into the market,” he says. “But I figured if I at least broke even, I’d still benefit because I could run Laundry Butler for You, my residential laundry pickup and delivery service, out of my new laundry.”

Each month, sales improved at Valencia Express Laundry, according to Jaeger, and so did his Laundry Butler for You service.

O IS FOR OZONE

In January of this year, striving to stand apart, Jaeger added ozone to the store’s Continental washers. The machines were already key to shortening the wash/dry/fold process for customers to under an hour, Now, Jaeger harnessed their flexibility to add Sano3Wash ozone injection—and with it—sanitization.

The ozone, which is injected into the cold water supply of each Continental washer, kills bacteria, viruses and superbugs in the wash, effectively sanitizing laundry, according to Continental. Additionally, ozone works to loosen fibers and break down and wash away soil and stains. In the end, ozone results in cleaner laundry and requires less hot water, which helps lower utility costs, according to Jaeger.

But ozone also works as a marketing hook for drawing customers in and keeping them coming

back. And Jaeger uses that in conjunction with the Continental washers’ ProfitPlus Controls.

“It’s the most flexible control on the market today,” says Jaeger, “and it allows me to program every variable of the wash process.” ProfitPlus offers Superwash, Warm, Hot and Cold selections, plus the option of adding an extra wash, rinse or spin. “Every washer is sanitized all the time, but if customers want to add the power of ozone to their laundry, they can add an extra rinse that’s ozonated” for another quarter.

Prior to adding ozone, the extra rinse add-on was selected 8% of the time, he says. With the ozone, it’s selected 24% of the time.

To call out the ozone option, Jaeger plastered informational stickers directly on the washers.

But the ozone isn’t reserved only for selfservice customers. Jaeger also markets it for drop-off wash/dry/fold and his Laundry Butler service.

BUILDING ON SUCCESS

Nearly a year in, Jaeger says he has successfully rekindled the faltering laundry. “We broke even from the second month and started making money in September 2018,” he says. Today, self-service revenue is up 50%, vending is up 80%, and dropoff wash/dry/fold has grown steadily to contribute 8% of total revenue.

“Now, the business is paying the loan, rent and a full staff of employees and still making money,” says Jaeger, who seems to have answered his own question about a good operator making a difference. ACO

Customers can also choose to add an extra ozonated rinse to sanitize their laundry. Right before the event, and after Riddle had left his CVB post, the high-profile robbery-turned-murder of a tourist had the city on edge and visitors leery of coming to Atlanta.

“A number of my friends that I had met when I was at the Bureau called and asked if I could do some things to help them. They wanted me to have meet-and-greets at the airport, be on the show floor and help the exhibitors know that the associations were really after their best interests. I did.”

Impressed by his performance, the Music Merchants asked if he’d come to California and offer the same services for a show there. He agreed, and soon he was helping manage shows for several different associations and groups around the country.

“All of a sudden, all of the things I’ve got at home, I’m on the road, trying to make people happy on a trade show floor,” he says.

One day, Riddle received a call from Ward Gill, who was executive director of the Car Wash Association and Coin

Laundry Association. Their trade show was coming to Atlanta in 1981. They’d sell it but wanted him to run it: “I said I would, and I have been with the Clean Show ever since then.”

He served the biennial event in that way several times until the opportunity to manage the whole thing came up.

remembers. “They asked me if I wanted to bid. I said yes. There were, I think, seven management companies and fortunately Riddle & Associates won that bid, and it’s been a blessing ever since.”

Riddle admits that the first Clean Show for which his firm was fully responsible frightened him.

“I was scared to death, tell you the truth. It’s a big job when you put a show of this magnitude together. Things have changed tremendously as far as our ability to communicate, the speed with which we can communicate.”

Selecting a series of dates and a venue to attract the maximum number of attendees from all over the world is always challenging, he says.

While the spotlight is focused on him in these final months leading up to Clean 2019, Riddle readily admits that he couldn’t have organized and managed the event successfully without his loyal staff.

“They are my heroes,” he says. “Nobody could do this without a staff. Nobody’s that good, I don’t care who you are. I’ve been blessed for a career in baseball and many things that I’ve been able to do—God has

been good to me—and one of the kindest things He’s ever done for me is put me in the midst of these people here.

“Whether it’s Paul (Philips), Beth (Scheuer), Ann (Howell), Jewell (Kowzan), Kayla (Brown), they’re unreal. … What people will see at that show is done by five people. These people are like family to me. These people deserve the credit. They’re the ones who do the work.”

Beyond that group, there are many other people associated with the general contractors and the event venues themselves who contribute to the finished product.

“If someone would walk on the trade show floor at 9:30 or 10 o’clock at night before we open, you would say there is no way this is going to be ready at 8 o’clock in the morning,” Riddle says. “If you don’t believe there is such a thing as miracles, come and spend that last night on a trade show floor, and when you come back the next day, it is spit-shined and polished.”

What will you miss most about the Clean Show?

He takes a deep breath, then says, “People.”

Relationships?

“Yep. … There are so many of you out there I enjoyed friendships with, enjoyed cutting up and kidding with. I’m a big jokester. Love to have fun. I love to work hard but I love to have fun, too. I’m going to miss it. There’s no doubt about me being emotional.”

While Riddle will be slowing down without the Clean Show to manage, he says there are consulting and other opportunities available to Riddle & Associates if he chooses to pursue them.

But he’s not thinking about those quite yet.

“I just hope that we can deliver the quality of show that, fortunately and thank God, we’ve been able to deliver, at least in our minds, to date,” Riddle says. “This is a great industry and we like being a part of its future. Hopefully, we can give it another good show.

“These guys that exhibit, they spend a lot of time and a lot of money planning and providing the best information they can for the industry. I’d like to see a large number of people come out and take advantage of that.”

TCATA HOSTS MEETING TO CHART ASSOCIATION’S FUTURE

Fourteen members of the Textile Care Allied Trades Association (TCATA) gathered in Tampa, Florida, in late February for a strategy meeting to discuss plans for the Association’s future direction, TCATA reports.

Continued industry consolidation and other factors have “changed the textile care industry in significant ways,” the Association says, and leadership recognizes that now is the time to examine TCATA’s role and how it can best serve the industry.

At present, TCATA is an international trade association representing manufacturers and distributors of drycleaning and laundry equipment and supplies, as well as the related trades. Its mission is to increase professionalism through business operations and sales improvement education; provide forums where business challenges are discussed and solved; generate and apply business intelligence; and create a favorable business climate by seeking fair regulation and legislation.

The members attending the strategy meeting represented an industry cross-section: manufacturers and distributors from both laundry and dry cleaning.

“Those who attended expressed an enthusiasm for TCATA’s important role as the exclusive representative of manufacturers and distributors in the textile care industry,” says TCATA President Leslie Schaeffer. “Many interesting ideas were put forth

on ways that TCATA can offer value in a changed, consolidated industry.”

The results of the meeting, after further discussion with the TCATA Board of Directors, will be announced later, the Association says.

LOW COST MANUFACTURING ADDS MACKAY TO STAFF

Low Cost Manufacturing, a New York-based wholesale supplier of OEM and generic parts for coin-op and commercial washers and dryers, reports it has named Ken Mackay vice president of parts, sales and distribution.

Prior to joining the company, Mackay spent 12 years running the parts department for a major machinery dealer in the laundry industry, Low Cost Manufacturing says. He was responsible for purchasing, distribution and sales, and negotiating “significant relationships” with major laundry equipment manufacturers.

Additionally, Mackay brings 16 years of sales experience that also includes equipment installations and service technician work.

“His knowledge of the electrical, mechanical and water systems in the industry is unmatched,” Low Cost Manufacturing says. “With Ken joining (us), we are very excited to move our commercial laundry parts division to a much higher level.”

LAUNDRYLUX ACQUIRES AUTOMATED LAUNDRY SYSTEMS

Laundrylux reports that it has acquired Jacksonville, Floridabased distributor Automated Laundry Systems, led by Don and Kristen Packard. Terms of the acquisition were not announced.

Automated Laundry Systems was established in 1997 and serves the vended, on-premise and multi-housing laundry markets.

“We are delighted to partner with Don and Kristen, who are sophisticated business leaders aligned with our strategic vision,” says Laundrylux CEO John Sabino. “The Packards have developed and diversified Automated’s business methodically over the last decade and together we will accelerate expansion in the key North/Central Florida market.”

“We have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Laundrylux, and we understand the dynamics driving industry consolidation,” Don Packard notes. “To best serve our valued customers, we believe that partnering with Laundrylux’s strong product and technology development, and entrepreneurial management, is the right choice.”

Automated Laundry Systems becomes the third distributor acquired by Laundrylux this year. The acquisitions of CESCO NW and Golden State Laundry Systems were announced in January.

MAKE IT AN EVEN DOZEN FOR AWARD-WINNING WESTERN STATE DESIGN

Distributor Western State Design (WSD) reports that it received Dexter Laundry’s 2018 “#1 in Dexter Sales Worldwide” award in March at the manufacturer’s annual conference in Hawaii.

It marks the 12th consecutive year that WSD has been honored as Dexter’s top sales producer.

WSD also received the 2018 “Chairman’s Award” for an unprecedented sixth time, plus recognition for record annual Dexter Laundry equipment sales for the third year in a row.

“We are truly honored to be recognized as Dexter’s Laundry’s top producer in 2018,” says Todd Hyrn, WSD vice president. “Our sales team, along with the rest of our staff, are committed to providing our customers with the best commercial, vended, and coin-operated laundry solutions available.

“We would like to thank our valued customers for their support of the WSD and Dexter brands; it is our customers that make these achievements possible.”

MAINE COUPLE NAMED HUEBSCH STORE OWNERS OF QUARTER

Commercial laundry equipment brand Huebsch recently named John and Ceara Templin as its Store Owners of the Quarter.

The Templins opened the Laundry Lounge in Winslow, Maine, a year ago and the store has become a destination for customers, some of whom are traveling more than an hour to use their Huebsch equipment, the Alliance Laundry Systems brand reports.

“John and Ceara embody the entrepreneurial spirit of the next generation of vended laundry owners,” says Kathryn Rowen, Huebsch North American sales manager. “They decided that by leveraging higher-level technology and elevating the customer experience, Laundry Lounge would quickly become a market leader; and it has.”

The 2,500-square-foot laundry features equipment in a variety of capacities, ranging from 20- to 80-pound washers, as well as 30- and 45-pound stacks and 75-pound tumble dryers. The Templins are also utilizing the latest in technology, with Galaxy 600 controls giving customers the ability to tailor wash cycles, while Huebsch Command helps the couple monitor their store’s performance.

Also key to their getting a quality start has been their Huebsch distributor, Daniels Equipment Co. of Auburn, New Hampshire. Specifically, Tom Tobiassen from Daniels was integral.

“Tom was great,” John Templin says. “He took care of everything from operational floor space and equipment recommendations to financing. That allowed me to focus on construction and the renovation of the site. I didn’t have to worry about anything except signing paperwork.”
