The firms are listed alphabetically by state/province, city, then company name. As you leaf through the pages, keep in mind that the Directory lists a business only in a state in which it maintains an office. Service areas sometimes extend beyond state borders, so take a regional approach when searching for a distributor.
Now, about me having no idea. I’ve been editor of an American Trade Magazines publication since 1999, so this is my 20th year of gathering and organizing distributor listings. In all that time, I hadn’t realized that more than a handful of distributors use the same last four digits in their phone number: 9274.

For the first time in five years, the share of distributors reporting their business had improved year-toyear was larger than the prior year, according to the results of American CoinOp’s annual Distributors Survey.
A majority of distributors is also expecting overall 2019 sales to surpass those of 2018.
More than half of distributors polled (56.3%) say that their total business— including sales of newly constructed vended laundries and replacement business—was better in 2018 compared to 2017.
When it comes to sales projections, an identical share (56.3%) believe their company’s 2019 overall sales will be better than 2018’s.
Approximately 19% of respondents say their 2018 business was worse than 2017’s, while 25.0% say that business has stayed the same.
Distributors listed in the previous edition of the American Coin-Op Distributors Directory were invited to participate in this year’s unscientific survey, which charts 2018 business and makes comparisons to previous years. In this summary report, percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding.
2018 BUSINESS
This year, 56.3% of distributors who
were polled said business was better in 2018 than 2017. That’s up from last year’s report in which 53.1% of distributors said 2017 business was better than 2016. The share of distributors reporting better business compared to the prior year was 63.6% in the 2017 survey, 67.4% in the 2016 survey and 68.3% in the 2015 survey.
Those who described their business in 2018 as being “better” attributed their company’s performance to the overall economy; availability of financing; equipment improvements and differentiation; and a greater market desire to retool older stores, among other factors.
The share whose business suffered in 2018 said factors like weakened demand, difficulty in finding good store locations, rental rates, government policies, and competition with other distributors in their area were at least partly to blame.
REPLACEMENT BUSINESS
Slightly more than 58% of distributors polled say their replacement business was up in 2018 compared to 2017. This is about 10 points lower than last year’s survey in which just shy of 68% of distributors reported better 2017-to-2016 replacement business. By comparison, the share was 62% in the 2017 survey, 64% in the 2016 poll and 73.2% in the 2015 survey.
Roughly 13% of respondents say they saw 2018 replacement business decrease from that of 2017, while 29% say it remained unchanged.
NEW-LAUNDRY CONSTRUCTION
American Coin-Op asked distributors to list the number of new laundries they built and/or to which they supplied equipment in 2018.
In this year’s survey, the share of distributors that built and/or supplied equipment to three or fewer stores in 2018 accounted for more than half of poll respondents: 58.6%. In comparison to previous surveys, that number was 62.1% in 2017, 48.8% in 2016, 40.5% in 2015, and 69.2% in 2014.
Companies building or supplying equipment to four or more new laundries in 2018 accounted for 41.4% of the total. For 2017, that number was 37.9%.
The actual number of new laundries that distributors were involved with in some way in 2018 ranged from just a single store to one respondent reporting his or her company dealt with 45 stores.
Following is a rundown of the most popular answers from this year’s survey: 1) 3 2) 1 3) 2 Almost half of distributors surveyed (46.9%) said their new-construction total for 2018 was higher than the previous year. Comparing to previous surveys, 23.3% said their new-construction total was up for 2017; 33.3% said it was up for 2016; and 35% said it was up for 2015.
Roughly 22% of distributors surveyed said their new-construction total was lower in 2018 than in 2017, which is down significantly from the 47% of distributors who said that total was lower in 2017 than 2016. Earlier surveys showed 29% with lower totals in 2016 than 2015,

Slightly more than 31% of distributors polled said their newconstruction total for 2018 remained the same as 2017. That compares to 30% of distributors reporting no change for 2017 from 2016, 38% for 2016 from 2015, and 41% for 2015 from 2014.
EQUIPMENT MIX
Wonder what equipment that distributors are installing in new stores across the country? Here’s a quick analysis of trends, based on this year’s survey results.
Roughly 41% of new stores in 2018 had at least one top loader. Past survey percentages were 33% in 2017, 46% in 2016, 41% in 2015, 60% in 2014, 63% in 2013, 45% in 2012 and 58% in 2011.
Self-service laundries newly built in 2018 have an average of 3.1 top loaders, compared to averages of 2.5 per new store in 2017, 3.2 in 2016, 2.8 in 2015, 4.6 in 2014 and 4.5 in 2013. (These figures factor in new stores with no top loaders.)
Breaking it down, following are the most popular number of top loaders installed in new stores in 2018:
1) 0
2) 5
3) 10
When it comes to front loaders, vended laundries that were newly constructed in 2018 have an average of 26.5 front loaders. This compares to averages of 28.6 in 2017, 33.3 in 2016, 28.5 in 2015, 27.5 in 2014 and 26.6 in 2013.
The most common number of front loaders installed in newly constructed laundries in 2018 was:
1) 40
2) 20 and 30 (tie)
4) 24 and 35 (tie)
Vended laundries that were newly constructed in 2018 have an average of 27.8 dryer pockets. This compares to an aver-
age of 33.4 dryer pockets in 2017, 39.1 in 2016, 31.7 in 2015, 32.4 in 2014, 32.8 in 2013 and 30.8 in 2012.
Following are the most common number of dryer pockets installed in newly built laundries in 2018:

SURVEYING STORE SIZE
Are the new stores built in 2018 roomy or smaller and more manageable?
The most popular store sizes, in square feet, reported in this year’s survey were:
1) 1,800
2) 2,500, 2,800 and 4,000 (tie)
5) 2,000, 3,000 and 3,500 (tie)
Stores constructed in 2018 that are 2,000 square feet or less account for 28% of the total, while 40% are between 2,001 and 3,000 square feet.
These figures compare to the 24% of stores measuring 2,000 square feet or less and the 52% covering between 2,001 and 3,000 square feet reported for 2017.
The largest newly constructed vended laundry built in 2018 covers 9,000 square feet, while the smallest measures just 900 square feet, according to the survey results.
The average newly constructed vended laundry store for 2018 covers 2,948 square feet, which is slightly larger than the 2,824-square-foot average for 2017. Prior averages were 3,132 (2016), 2,639 (2015), 2,696 (2014), 2,663 (2013), 2,754 (2012) and 2,721 (2011).
On average, a newly constructed store sold for $460,238 in 2018 (distributors were asked to exclude the cost of land and building). Prior average sale prices were $520,045 in 2017, $558,097 in 2016, $452,000 in 2015, $360,394 in 2014, $368,214 in 2013, $386,591 in 2012 and $366,000 in 2011.
NEW-STORE PROFILES OVER THE YEARS
So, how do these numbers from 2018 compare to distributor business performance in years past? Here is a quick recap of facts and figures.
The average newly constructed store in 2018 has 3.1 top loaders, 26.5 front loaders and 27.8 dryer pockets, and covers 2,948 square feet. Here’s how it compares to new-store profiles from the
past five years:
• 2017: 2.5 top loaders, 28.6 front loaders, 33.4 dryer pockets, and 2,824 square feet.
• 2016: 3.2 top loaders, 33.3 front loaders, 39.1 dryer pockets, and 3,132 square feet.
• 2015: 2.8 top loaders, 28.5 front loaders, 31.7 dryer pockets, and 2,639 square feet.
• 2014: 4.6 top loaders, 27.5 front loaders, 32.4 dryer pockets, and 2,696 square feet.
• 2013: 4.5 top loaders, 26.6 front loaders, 32.8 dryer pockets, and 2,663 square feet.
OTHER BUSINESS
Distributors were also asked if their company brokers vended laundries. Roughly 34% of respondents to this year’s survey say they do, compared to 31% in 2018, 34% in 2017 and 25% in 2016.
The share of distributors operating a route laundry declined from the prior year, with 40.6% of respondents to this year’s survey saying they do. That compares to 50% last year, 38.6% in 2017 and 36.2% in 2016.
The share of distributors that host an equipment show annually is 47.7%, compared to 50% in 2018, 47.7% in 2017 and 57.5% in 2016 (visit AmericanCoinOp. com and click the “Calendar” tab throughout the year for notices of upcoming events).
DISTRIBUTOR FORECAST
How do distributors feel about the current year’s overall sales? For 56.3% of respondents, 2019 sales are expected to be better than those of 2018, while 31.3% believe they will be about the same. Roughly 13% believe that 2019 business will be worse than 2018 totals. ACO

ALLIANCE LAUNDRY SYSTEMS BUYS PLANT TO AID EXPANSION
Alliance Laundry Systems reported in early August that it had closed on its purchase of the former Manitowoc (Wisconsin) Crane Company plant. The more than 330,000-square-foot plant will be used to help grow production at the Ripon, Wis., facility.
Like many companies, Alliance says it has battled to fill openings amid a tight labor market and a particularly competitive Fox Valley area. In addition, the move will create up to 250 positions.
The move is not intended to reduce positions in Ripon, Alliance says, as staff will be redeployed elsewhere in the facility.
Cost of the project, which also includes upgrades to the Ripon facility, is approximately $30 million.
Roughly 80,000 square feet of the Manitowoc facility will be occupied immediately this year for subassembly production, and plastics work is likely to be added next year.
