Survey: Dry cleaners look to attract new customers in new year

Attracting new customers is the top 2014 business priority for the majority of dry cleaners (39.1%), according to results from January’s American Drycleaner Your Views survey.

Other dry cleaners say their top priority is to “raise prices and/or cut costs” (21.7%), “explore extra services or new opportunities” (10.9%), “add/ update equipment” (5.4%) or “spruce up [their] store(s)” (5.4%).

Another 17.4% of dry cleaners listed “other” top business priorities, such as generating revenue from “both existing and new clients,” or “checking alternative solvents.”

Looking back at 2013, 55.4% of cleaners say their drycleaning operation met “some” of its goals, while 27.2% “did not meet” its goals. Only a small percentage (6.5%) met “all of [its] goals,” while 10.9% set no goals at all.

For 2014, only a third of respondents (33.3%) set New Year’s resolutions, while almost half of respondents (49.5%) did not set any goals. Roughly 17% say they have “not yet” made resolutions for the new year.

In terms of personal priorities, the majority of cleaners would like to “lose weight or improve [their] fitness” (39.6%), while 19.8% would like to “get organized.” Spending more time with

family is the No.1 priority for 18.7% of respondents, while 4.4% would like to “quit smoking/drinking.”

Roughly 18% of respondents listed “other” personal priorities, including “[hav ing] more time for myself,” “move to a new home,” and “retirement planning.”

The majority of dry cleaners are opti mistic about meeting their business and personal priorities for the new year, as 35.9% say they have a “good chance [to] accomplish both goals.” Roughly 29% say they have a “50/50 chance,” while 23.9% say “there’s no doubt” they will accom plish their goals. Small percentages believe they have a “slim chance” (7.6%) or “no chance” (3.3%).

While American Drycleaner’s Your Views survey presents a snapshot of the trade audience’s viewpoints, it should not be considered scientific.

Thirteen states ring in new year with minimum-wage increases

New minimum-wage increases have gone into effect this year in 13 states, which the Economic Policy Institute estimates will boost the incomes of 2.5 million low-paid workers, the National Employment Law Project (NELP) reports.

Four states—Connecticut ($8.70), New Jersey ($8.25), New York ($8.00) and Rhode Island ($8.00)—passed laws in early 2013 to raise their minimum wage, while the other nine states—Arizona ($7.90), Colorado ($8.00), Florida ($7.93), Missouri ($7.50), Montana ($7.90), Ohio ($7.95), Oregon ($9.10), Vermont ($8.73) and Washington ($9.32)—adjusted their minimum wage in accordance with state laws requiring automatic annual increases to keep pace with the cost of living. THE NUMBERS

WHILE THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE dipped to 6.7%, only 74,000 new jobs were added in December. Many economists caution that the lower rate may not be all that favorable, since many people have given up looking for work.

“The U.S. economy closed out 2013 by adding 74,000 jobs, bringing the 2013 total to nearly 2.2 million new jobs,” says Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. “With 87,000 new private-sector jobs in December, that makes 8.2 million jobs created by the private sector over the last 46 straight months.”

Still, far too many Americans are struggling to find jobs and secure a foothold in the middle class, Perez adds.

ON THE HOUSING FRONT , RealtyTrac reports that 9.3 million properties were underwater in December, 19% of all mortgaged properties in the country. The number is gained when comparing the loan amount is at least 25%

higher than the property’s market value. The number is lower than in September, when 10.7 million properties were underwater (23% of all mortgages), and the December number is the lowest since 2011.

THE NON-MANUFACTURING SECTORS report from the Institute for Supply Management shows economic growth continued in December. “The NMI registered 53% in December, 0.9 percentage point lower than November’s reading of 53.9%,” says Anthony Nieves, chair of the NonManufacturing Business Survey Committee.

THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF SHOPPING CENTERS also reported positive numbers for the November/December holiday shopping season. Despite extreme weather conditions and a shorter season, sales rose 3%, says the ICSC.

EXPORTS OF GOODS AND SERVICES increased by $1.7 billion in November, the U.S. Commerce De-

partment reports, for a new monthly high of $194 billion—up from $193.1 billion in October. JanuaryNovember exports totaled $2.1 trillion, another recordsetting year.

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE

WAS UP for households with incomes under $75,000, according to the Surveys of Consumers from Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan. The end of the government shutdown eased concerns somewhat, but it did not increase consumer confidence in economic policies.

“Consumers were clearly relieved when the D.C. gridlock ended,” says Surveys of Consumers Chief Economist Richard Curtin. “Confidence has bounced back to nearly the same levels it was before the crisis in mid-2013. Simply ending the shutdown or passing a new budget to keep the government open, however welcome, is not seen by consumers as a proactive step toward better economic policy.” O —Jean Teller

While looking over past articles, I discovered that it has been almost five years since I took a look at the topic of wedding dresses. That particular article was the result of dealing with a wedding dress from a lakefront ceremony. The lake was also home to about 40 geese, but the bride insisted on having pictures taken at the water’s edge. The dress was a real mess, but having the bride agree to “time and materials” kept me focused on the task at hand.

The principles and methods recommended for wedding dresses can be easily applied to beauty pageant gowns, prom gowns, and even “standard” garments that have delicate trim.

The investment required to provide wedding dress service is time, knowledge and effort, but not money. An understanding of fibers, fabrics, dyes and trim greatly reduces any risk of handling these big-ticket items. Take the time to do it right, and have your customer brag about your service and quality.

for wet cleaning. Using a detergent with a pH level below 7, the water temperature around 87 F, greatly reduced mechanical action, and humidity-controlled drying, the vast number of polyester garments can be exposed to water, with due consideration to construction and trim. This is an advantage for the cleaner when dealing with water-soluble stains like foods and beverages.

Before cleaning, inspect each and every gown while it is hanging fully extended, with any bustles open. Inspect the hemline both inside and out, then pre-treat the pickup dirt and stains that are found. Inspect the upper bodice for make-up and the inside of the bodice from the waistline to the bosom for self-tanning and make-up, which require breaking down oils and waxes. Pre-treat the underarms with a spray spotter or other type of moisture stock.

The hemline of most gowns is usually a roll with an inch or two under the skirt. This will allow the cleaner to shift the material to effectively tamp the area that came into contact with the floor.

Most gowns have a form-fitting bodice. This results in the excessive transfer of body oils and must be pre-spotted. All this pre-treatment greatly reduces the amount of mechani cal action required when cleaning

Ornate trim is common on gowns. Beads could easily be Styrofoam that has been painted. Almost any shiny trim can quickly be damaged by most solvents. Do not assume anything about the trim; test it to be absolutely sure that it will survive the chosen cleaning process.

Any gown with a care label containing a reference to water immersion gives the cleaner additional options. Turning the gown inside-out and running in a large net bag will further reduce the mechanical action and protect fragile trim. If wet cleaning a gown, it can be hung to dry overnight. Placing tension on the dress while drying will significantly reduce the time and effort needed to finish the gown.

A silk wedding dress is fragile, so care must be taken from the moment it reaches the door of the business. Silk is the product of unravelling a worm’s cocoon. It is a natural protein fiber. It does not react well to variations in pH, and is especially sensitive to alkali.

Pre-spotting a silk garment must eliminate or at least minimize the use of moisture. Using a good general prespotter/leveling agent is the best choice. All recognized stains should be removed at the board, then use a cycle with reduced mechanical action in the drycleaning machine. The use of maximum pre-spotting and minimum mechanical action greatly reduces the risk in cleaning silk.

If wet-side pre-spotting is required on a silk gown, dry the garment at the board and then allow additional time to hang and dry before dry cleaning. Before the garment is dry cleaned, a leveling agent should be applied for an extra margin of safety.

Silk loses much of its tensile strength when wet with water. Any use of mechanical action while the silk fabric is wet could result in breaking the threads and fibers, referred to as chafing. This chafing is not color loss, but the light being reflected differently from the damaged area, making the area look dull. If chafing occurs, it can sometimes be masked using mineral oil, by

Alliance Laundry Systems moves forward with $46 million expansion

Commercial laundry equipment manufac turer Alliance Laundry Systems is moving forward with a $46 million expansion proj ect, having just completed a production capacity increase last year, the company reports.

The largest expansion in the company’s history, the project plans call for adding 106,000 square feet of space for manufac turing and assembly, says Alliance.

The company anticipates breaking ground for the expansion this month, and expects the added production capacity to be online in the second half of 2015.

Its corporate campus in Ripon, Wis., occupies five buildings on more than 58 acres, including two manufacturing plants, an engineering center and test lab, and dis tribution facilities, for a total of more than 1 million square feet.

Alliance plans to immediately hire an additional 150 manufacturing and office staff to support the added capacity, the company says, while the majority of pro duction employees will be hired in 2015.

Royaltone offers free online training for UGG boots cleaning

UGG boots have become a staple for cold weather-wear, leaving many cleaners un sure of how to clean the popular suede boot. In response, Royaltone, manufacturer of laundry, drycleaning and leather clean ing products, is now offering its Online Training for UGG Boot Cleaning for free on its website, the company reports.

“In the past the company has only of fered the training to cleaners who have purchased the UGG Boot Cleaning kit or Trial Sized UGG Cleaning Kit,” the company says. “[We] are now giving the training away free on [our] website. No purchase is necessary.”

The step-by-step online video runs for approximately 27 minutes, and features Lori Randall utilizing Royaltone’s wet cleaning leather system and an ordinary home washing machine.

“We have just been overwhelmed with calls from cleaners who are very skepti cal that UGGs, or any suede item, can be washed in water,” says Carl Randall, owner of Royaltone. “We felt that allow ing the cleaners to see the entire process before the purchase will prove how very simple and successful it can be.”

50 YEARS AGO. The National Institute of Drycleaning (NID) will be focusing on a “new outlook” for its annual convention next month at the Pick-Congress Hotel in Chicago, highlighting new concepts in marketing dry cleaning, based on a nationwide study of consumers by the Institute for Motivational Research. “The findings in this survey will be equally valuable to small plants and large ones,” says NID General Manager George P. Fulton. … In considering the “Image of the Cleaner,” public relations expert John Jay Daly advises dry cleaners to give their entire operation an “Image Check-up.” “Whether you decide to ‘do-it-yourself’ [or hire a

professional,] study it from top to bottom, front to back, inside and out,” he says. In addition to the appearance of an operation’s trucks, route salesmen and counter girl, check on the “‘voice’ appearance of anyone who deals with the public over the phone,” Daly advises. Regardless of what image the dry cleaner presents at his/her operation, he stresses customer service above all. … Breen’s Cleaners and Launderers, La Grange, Ill., has been named “Dry Cleaning Plant of the Year” over all Northwest American plants by the Management Engineering Association. Breen’s was chosen for its low ratio of customer complaints.

75 YEARS AGO. Attendees of the 32nd annual convention of the National Association of Dyers & Cleaners (NADC) had plenty to do and see at the show in Dallas. In addition to a Celanese Style Fashion Show, guests were treated to prize-winning steaks during the convention’s final banquet at the Adolphus Hotel. Charles E. Rinehart of San Diego was also installed as NADC president during the convention, succeeding Hymie Ditkowsky of Chicago. … Albert Miller, dry cleaner at Model Laundry, Fond du Lac, Wis., has gotten some stares from his classmates at the sewing class he takes at the Fond du Lac Vocational School. There are 30 students in the class, and Miller, according to reports, is the only man. He admits he was self-conscious at the beginning, as he’d catch the women looking up from their work every so often to watch him thread a needle or take a tuck. Since then, he’s gained confidence, proving his skill by fashioning a skirt out of an old pair of trousers. O

Clothing Doctor Makes House Calls

10 YEARS AGO. Steve Boorstein, aka “The Clothing Doctor,” is now making house calls via the airwaves, as he has debuted a syndicated radio show titled The Clothing Doctor Show, featuring co-host Gina La Morte. The hour-long program aims to help listeners with questions about clothing and fabricare, and features commentary, special guests and live call-in segments. … Drycleaning franchise Zoots is suited for expansion, as the company has recently acquired several drycleaning businesses along the East Coast.

“We’re accelerating our growth,” says Jim McManus, Zoots CEO. “Our focus on improving the servicing of our customers has led to a number of terrific expansion opportunities within our current markets.

We plan to grow via a combination of new stores and route openings, as well as acquisitions of high-quality cleaners in our existing geographies along the East Coast.” … The International Fabricare Institute (IFI) has created a new distinction, Certified Garment Care Professional (CGCP), recognizing cleaners who have completed its three certification programs—Certified

Professional Drycleaner (CPD), Certified Environmental Drycleaner (CED) and Certified Professional Wetcleaner (CPW). The new certificate is free for all cleaners who pass all three exams. “It says you’re a professional,” says Jane Rising, IFI Education & Training manager. “It’s even better when your employees retain certification. Then your customers know that their garments are being well cared for by people with experience.”

25 YEARS AGO. The Minnesota Fabricare Association and the Rocky Mountain Fabricare Association have signed a joint state agreement with the International Fabricare Institute (IFI). The Rocky Mountain group, which includes Colorado and Wyoming, became a joint state organization early this year, while the Minnesota group begins its partnership with IFI in April. “We are in the first stages of planning strong educational programs for these two new joint states,” says Jon Meijer, IFI joint state/legislative liaison. “The major benefit of being a joint state is to be able to provide programs and services that these members would not otherwise have.” … Dry cleaners, launderers and all those in the textile care industry are prepping for the “big days in Dallas” at next month’s Clean ’89, set to take place at the Dallas

A Bachelors of Science, Engineering graduate, Bobby Patel of CSULB, learned well from his alma matter. The central plant at this campus has (10) ten 6.3MMbtu water heaters with economizers running the last 18 years flawlessly at 8485% efficiency.
