Survey: Investments in cooling equipment boost employee morale during summer

CHICAGO — In the hot summer months, many dry cleaners add cooling equipment to keep employees comfortable, with the majority (67.7%) of respondents believing their investment in these fans and cooling systems has paid off in terms of employee morale and productivity, according to the results of July’s American Drycleaner Your Views survey.

Only about one-fifth (21.5%) of respondents say they are unsure if their investment has paid off, while 10.8% say their investment in cooling equipment has not paid off.

The responding dry cleaners use these types of cooling equipment: portable fans (66.2%); swamp coolers (47.9%); air conditioning (19.7%); spot-cooling systems (19.7%); and portable evaporative coolers (16.9%). While 5.6% say they use “none” of the equipment listed, some (9.9%) say they use “other” methods, such as exhaust fans and power roof vents.

Although the majority of dry cleaners polled use cooling equipment, 72.6% have not added new machines this year. Portable fans are the most popular among respondents, as 14.5% have recently added them to their facility. This is a large number compared to the few who have added air-conditioning units (3.2%), swamp coolers

(6.5%), spot-cooling systems (3.2%) and portable evaporative coolers (4.8%).

Another method for keeping employees comfortable is to adjust production sched ules. Nearly half (47.9%) of respondents have made temporary changes, like starting shifts earlier and rotating workers to differ ent stations, while the majority (52.1%) say they do not follow this practice.

Among the responding cleaners who adjust schedules, the majority say they have their staff work early in order to leave early, which allows for an overall cooler workday.

Some respondents specified how much earlier workers start; about an hour ear lier than usual is typical. One dry cleaner even reduces his/her production schedule to only four days per week. Another said that working after dark also helps to reduce the plant’s heat.

Water is definitely important when it comes to working in warm conditions. One operator said he/she encourages workers to take “more water breaks (to rest in airconditioned break room), or [they’ll] end early on a very hot day.” Another empha sized “[making] sure there are water coolers available.”

While American Drycleaner’s Your Views survey presents a snapshot of the trade audience’s viewpoints, it should not be considered scientific. Due to rounding, percentages may not add up to 100%.

THE U.S. UNEMPLOYMENT

RATE in June was down to 6.1%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Gains were seen in a variety of industries, with a total of 288,000 jobs added to non-farm payrolls.

The rate was down 0.2 percentage points from May’s. Over the course of this year, the rate has dropped by 1.4 percentage points, and the number of unemployed has decreased by 2.3 million.

THE HOUSING MARKET also reported recent growth. The National Association of Realtors reported a sharp increase in pending home sales for May, as well as lower mortgage rates and an increased inventory. The Association’s Pending Home Sales Index increased 6.1% in May, which, while up from April 2014, is still below the May 2013 figure by 5.2%. The May increase was the largest gain since April 2010.

NAR Chief Economist

Lawrence Yun reports that second-half sales are likely to not be enough to help the lower first-quarter numbers, and that the year’s total will probably be lower than 2013’s.

The Mortgage Bankers Association’s latest Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey showed a slight decrease in mortgage applications for the last full week of June. The number of applications was down 0.2% from the previous week. Refinance applications accounted for 53% of the total, an increase of 1% from the previous week.

New foreclosures were down 5% in May when compared with the same period one year ago, for a total of 109,824 new proceedings, according to RealtyTrac.

THE MAY FIGURES for U.S. international trade were up in May, to $195.5 billion from $193.5 billion in April.

“Today’s strong export numbers are yet another sign that more American businesses are seizing the

opportunity to sell their world-class products and services to the 95% of consumers who live outside the United States,” says U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker.

THE NON-MANUFACTURING

SECTOR of the U.S. economy reported growth for the 53rd consecutive month in June, according to the Non-Manufacturing Report on Business from the Institute for Supply Management.

A SMALL GAIN IN consumer confidence was reported for June by the Surveys of Consumers from Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan, although the figure was offset by a largely unchanged Sentiment Index. Weather conditions were given as reasons by most consumers for a first-quarter decline in economic growth, but they also see that the economy is experiencing positive growth overall. O

I

recently attended a regional show for the drycleaning industry. These affairs have not changed much in the past 30 years. What has changed is the attitude of those who attend these shows.

The expectation that there is a single machine, immersion solution or stain-removal tool that can do it all is just not realistic. There are far too many variables in fiber, construction, trim and stains to address with a oneshot product.

An informed cleaner will be a successful cleaner, and a student of the industry will thrive while others are “walking away” in frustration. If you do not maintain clean solvent, with detergent, with a solvent flow that changes the volume of solvent in the wheel every 60 seconds, you are doing yourself harm and your customer a disservice.

Even with more than 30 years of experience, I still find stain removal a daily challenge. When it comes to tannin stains, no two are exactly alike.

The only thing tannin stains have in common is that they originate from a plant. Wine, tea, coffee and mustard are classic examples of tannin stains.

Before there were pre-formulated chemical tools, cleaners would mix a tannin solution using distilled water, glycerin and acetic acid. They knew that the higher the concentration of acetic acid in the mixture, the more aggressive the solution.

You must approach the removal of a tannin stain with an extra measure of patience. By going slowly, you can successfully remove the stain with a minimum of risk to the garment.

Start by putting the stain over the vacuum nose of the board and flushing the area with wet steam. This will break the surface tension, spread the fibers and heat the area to enhance the chemical action.

Apply NSD and light mechanical action over the solid portion of the spotting board, then flush the area with steam over the vacuum nose of the board. If there is ever any doubt about the content of any wet-side stain after this initial treatment, apply tannin formula first. Many times, if a protein formula is placed on a tannin stain, it will make it much harder to remove

the stain, or possibly even set the stain.

In all supplemental stain removal, the spotter must take into consideration the variables of fiber, construction and trim, and the stability of the dye. Many dyes are sensitive to the pH level of the chemical tool being used. Tannin formula is an acidbased liquid. Test the spotting chemical on an unexposed area and if there is a color change, neutralize the area with a protein (alkali) formula.

Apply the tannin formula over the solid portion of the spotting board, followed by mild mechanical action. Move the stain over the vacuum nose of the spotting board and flush with steam. If the stain is still noticeable, repeat the process using a stronger chemical, with a lower pH level. Test the spotter each time you progress to a stronger chemical tool.

My personal progression for tannin stain removal is mild tannin; strong tannin (on the board); super tannin, general formula, acetic acid, and oxalic acid (all on a shelf); and, finally, spot bleaching. The more aggressive chemicals should be placed where they are available, but only by making a conscious decision and movement to use one of these stain-removal tools.

The last chemical tool—bleach—is one for which there is a wide difference of opinion. Some spotters fear bleach, and others use it after only one stain-removal attempt with the proper chemical. Both of these approaches are wrong.

Bleaches can be of benefit on the spotting board, for the last traces of a variety of stains. The only bleach that should be used on a fabric that contains protein fiber is hydrogen peroxide—I recommend the “drug store” concentration of 3%.

Apply the peroxide with a cotton swab, set the garment aside for a few minutes, and then flush with steam. This can be repeated several times to achieve good results.

A highly refined/activated (extremely small grains) sodium perborate is a good tool to have available in a salt shaker, near the spotting board, for non-protein fabrics. Flush the area with steam, then shake on a small amount of sodium perborate. Apply a drop or two of NSD to moisten the powder, then melt the powder using the steam gun; apply just enough pressure on the steam pedal to have a wisp of steam rolling off the nose of the spotting gun. Finally, neutralize the area with a few drops of acetic acid and flush with steam. Do yourself a favor and move beyond the “me too” approach to cleaning. O

QuickSort hires Redditt as general manager, controller

QuickSort, manufacturer of auto-as sembly conveyors for dry cleaners, has added a second full-time employee to its staff. Bryan Redditt, whose back ground is in public accounting and smallbusiness development, takes on the role of general manager and controller.

He graduated from the University of Ar kansas with a degree in business, and specializes in accounting. His duties include accounting and marketing work and assisting customers. More than seven years of public account ing experience have prepared him for budgets and planning for this new po sition, the Little Rock, Ark., company says.

“The level of activity was such that I could not do everything that makes a small business successful,” says Brett McLeod, founder of QuickSort. “The timing was right to bring Bryan on board to help with the day-to-day op erations and let me focus on our cus tomers and product development.”

The company’s products span 30 states as well as Puerto Rico. McLeod says that with him, two employees and a close tie with a computer program

mer, their business now has the “infra structure that QuickSort, LLC needed and [is] poised for future growth.”

Developing projections, budgets and marketing plans will allow Redditt to help chart the future of the compa ny. “QuickSort is growing,” the new comer says. “Quality in a conveyor makes a lot of sense. It saves labor and makes a dry cleaner more efficient. It’s one of the few products out there that’ll pay for itself.”

Tide Dry Cleaners opens doors to several new locations

In an effort to expand its drycleaning franchise, Tide Dry Cleaners reports it has opened additional stores in Geor gia, Illinois, Arkansas and Nebraska in recent weeks.

These locations will offer drivethru services as well as 24-hour pick ups and drop-offs with their Tide Dry Cleaners Anytime kiosks and drop boxes.

Zengeler Cleaners plans to relocate to new HQ next year

Zengeler Cleaners, billed as the Midwest’s oldest and largest dry cleaner, will relocate the company’s headquarters location in the Chicago suburb of Northbrook, Ill., next year, the company reports.

A new state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly facility is scheduled to open at 770 Skokie Blvd.—just around the cor ner from its current location on Dundee Road—next year, with the development project having received approval from the Northbrook Village Board in May.

“Zengeler Cleaners is very excited about the relocation of our Northbrook store,” says company President Tom Zengeler. “This move will benefit all the stakeholders—our customers, the Village of Northbrook and Zengeler Cleaners.”

The new store will feature state-ofthe-art processing that will automate and expedite order processing, and feature architecture and infrastructure consistent with the evolving character of the North brook community.

The 770 Skokie project is a mixed-use development featuring a variety of stores. In addition to Zengeler Cleaners, it will feature a Mariano’s grocery store as the anchor property, plus Verizon, PNC Bank, Chipotle and Panera Bread. Real-estate firm Morningside Group is leading the project.

While his dry cleaner’s new location is expected to open sometime in 2015, the exact timing is “dependent on a variety of factors, not the least of which is weather,” Zengeler says.

Clean Show manager opens housing for 2015 Atlanta event

Attendees to next year’s Clean Show in Atlanta can now make lodging reserva tions via the trade show’s Housing Bureau, reports show manager Riddle & Associ ates.

Clean Show organizers have released a list of 12 downtown Atlanta hotels that are offering “special discounted rates.”

“Show management has contracted with all of the official hotels so we may offer Clean 2015 exhibitors and attend ees quality hotel-room options at a great price,” says Riddle & Associates.

The show’s five sponsoring trade as sociations have selected the following hotels as “headquarter” hotels from this list, which will be primarily occupied by attendees and exhibitors from their spe cific segment of the industry, according to Riddle & Associates:

There are reports from New York on a new synthetic fiber made out of cornmeal, as well as a new soybean textile fiber in the laboratories of Detroit’s Ford Motor Co., and a new synthetic fiber patented by Carbide & Carbon Chemical Corp. … Competition in water-repellent rainwear is also heating up between manufacturers du Pont and B.F. Goodrich Co. The Zelan finish from du Pont is an entirely new water repeller that doesn’t break down after washing, as it is held in the individual fibers of the fabric. Goodrich’s Koroseal finish contains raw materials of limestone, coke and salt. It gives the fabric a “K-treatment,” protecting wearers not only from water but also dirt and grease. 10 YEARS AGO. The Oregon Dry Cleaners Association (ODCA) is hosting a champagne brunch and boat trip in Grant Pass, Ore. The 36-mile, 4-hourlong tour will let the attendees of the event enjoy champagne while traveling down the Rogue River. The tour will be hosted on a wide-beamed jet boat and visit sites such as Hellgate Canyon while traveling down the whitewater rapids of the river, stopping off at the O.K. Corral homestead to enjoy an allyou-can eat country banquet. Dryness is no guarantee, though, during the trip as participants are encouraged to bring jackets, sunglasses and other gear to stay dry as the boat is expected to get soaked throughout the ride. … Northwestern Management Bureau recently provided a tour for a group of Japanese dry cleaners who were being hosted by Methods for Management Inc. (MfM). They were shown what the drycleaning industry is like in America, which included a tour of a Seattle, Wash., plant. They later participated in a review of financial benchmarks during which they learned how the bureau works, and how they could incorporate it into their own businesses back in Japan. … Maineline Computer Systems hosted “one of the largest gatherings

25 YEARS AGO. Teasdale Fenton Cleaners decided that it needed to bring the promotion of its business to new heights, or at least as high as its hot air balloon. Jim Olmstead, president of the Cincinnati-based dry cleaner, decided to purchase a hot air balloon, which cost him between $12,000 to $25,000, and embroidered “Teasdale Fenton Cleaners” in cursive across the front of the balloon. Olmstead joked that his family thought he was crazy for buying the balloon, but swears that it has caught the attention of many locals. Olmstead also uses it as a business incentive, giving the store manager with the most sales a ride on the balloon. Though Olmstead is not a licensed hot air balloon pilot, he also charges regular customers a local special of $95 a ride, but when he flies it to places like Chicago, he charges upwards of $150. …“Mystery Spot”
