They keep their eyes peeled on Alameda. It’s almost that time again. They know a new saying is coming.

Then, there it is! People point. Cameras flash. And soon cell phone pictures of the saying are posted on social media.

At this writing, the sign is: It’s the Beginning of Anything You Want.

“The sayings have nothing to do with dry cleaning and everything to do with life,” chuckles Milt Chortkoff. “Customers love it. We change the saying every two weeks.”

One of his favorites: The Only Thing Constant is Change.

The saying on that sign brings customers into Milt & Edie’s Drycleaners & Tailoring Center, a bright, busy, pink-colored store on Alameda Avenue in Burbank, Calif.

Milt and his wife Edie are celebrating Milt’s 70 years in the drycleaning business. A gleaming, refurbished 1946 GMC delivery truck parked in front of the store

highlights his many years, and people take pictures standing by it. It resembles the one he used to make deliveries while working for his father’s cleaners as a 17-year-old in 1946.

Speaking with Milt by phone, he describes how he came up with the expressions he posts on his front sign. He is energized and excited to share his thoughts and feelings about the business he loves. You wouldn’t know he’s 86 years young. His daughter, Beth Shader, joins in the conversation.

“There are dry cleaners everywhere. Why, there’s even three right near us,” Chortkoff says. “I asked myself, ‘What can we do different?’ I decided we needed a marquee with motivational sayings.”

But there’s far more to this wonderland of services and smiles than just witticisms on the marquee.

He notes that there are two sayings they live by at their store: “On the production side: quality work delivered on time; and on the sales side: all customers leave happy always.”

“A customer is not a customer until they’ve visited us six times,” explains Chortkoff.

“We get them in the store with promotions. OK.

Milt & Edie’s customers come for fun, keep coming back for service

Everyone does that.” He continues. “But we make our atmosphere unique.” That brings people back.

When customers arrive and pull into the parking lot, they are greeted by colorful signage, but that’s only the beginning. Chortkoff says there are flowers to greet them and music piped outside as well. Inside the store, music concert footage plays on four flat-screen TVs for customers to watch and enjoy.

“We have fresh popcorn and fresh coffee 24-7, and we offer cookies and candy,” Chortkoff says. “We have a maitre d’ who greets customers and helps them find the service counter they need fast.”

“The cleaning plant is like my living room,” he says with a steady, sure voice. “The customer is my guest in my home. We feed and entertain our guests and make sure they are happy.”

Milt & Edie’s offers their guests free hot dogs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s very popular,” Chortkoff says amusedly. “We see people calling all the time on their cell phones to tell friends and family on the other end of the line about the hot dogs.”

On Friday nights, it’s hors d’oeuvres. “We are near office buildings so we get professionals who stop in after work, and this is popular, too.”

There’s a koi pond outside of the plant. There’s a giant sign outside, too, with a photo of Milt and Edie. There’s a saying too: Over a thousand years of experience to serve you and all your cleaning needs. The store lists all the years the employees have been with the store.

“We post to Instagram and Twitter,” Shader says. “Just type in ‘#Milt&Edies’ to see all the different sayings from our marquee that people have taken pictures of and posted, along with their wonderful comments.”

The business has a newly launched website, miltandedies.com, and boasts some 5,300 followers on Facebook, where it offers weekly contests.

Milt & Edie’s has an “Our Heroes” theme to celebrate the military, law enforcement and emergency services personnel, Chortkoff notes.

The store has always offered cleaning discounts to service personnel. It also has its own “working-class heroes” theme on its Facebook page, highlighting its own hard-working employees, Shader adds.

“We have a map of the world in our store with little pins indicating where our employees were born,” Chortkoff says. “There are 18 different countries represented. The map is located near the front of the store, on the wall right behind the maitre d’. Customers like looking at it.”

In June, the San Fernando, Calif., Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) inducted Milt & Edie’s

Drycleaners & Tailoring Center, along with four other outstanding business and community leaders, into its Business Hall of Fame.

VICA established the Business Hall of Fame in 2008 to acknowledge the significant contributions of individuals, businesses and community organizations responsible for the continued success, economic vitality and culture of the San Fernando Valley.

“All we’ve ever wanted to do is be a good neighbor, so being inducted into the Hall of Fame is icing on the cake and such an honor,” says Chortkoff.

The day after the award ceremony, Milt & Edie’s declared June 17 “Edie’s Day” in honor of Edie’s 85th birthday, and the store celebrated with cupcakes, giveaways, and a

With the doors open around the clock, a two-hour turnaround on cleaning, 12 tailors on staff (some having worked 50 years in the industry), a maitre d’ to greet customers, and the smell of fresh popcorn popping and coffee brewing, Milt & Edie’s serves its Los Angeles-area clientele with a distinctive style and charm.

“We have a shoeshine service five days a week,” says Chortkoff. “Everything we do is with the customer in mind. We strive for perfection. I feel that attitude is more important than anything, so we hire the right people with great attitude.”

“We give out a complimentary customer bag that is full of promotional products such as a marker, a pen, a brush and mirror kit,” Shader says.

Is all this working? Chortkoff says the business sees, on averages, “500 new customers per month.” Sixty percent of people coming into the store say they came in after seeing the sign on the marquee.

“In the middle of the night, people stop in for tailoring,” he says. “It’s amazing!”

Milt & Edie’s wants their customers to feel like family.

“They are family,” says Chortkoff. “We want them to be entertained and to have fun.”

He has been doing this a long time. He’s always

looked for new ways to make his customers happy and to provide a fun, unique experience. He muses that he once retired in the 1980s but had to come back out of sheer boredom.

“A friend once called me up and told me, ‘Milt, you wow the customers.’”

Don’t Get Tangled Up in Blues

Fugitive dye migration is a common problem for both the consumer and the professional cleaner.

In last month’s column, I touched on the “oxidizing bleaches” used in a bleach bath and at the spotting board. A second group of bleaches are “reducing bleaches” that accomplish the job by taking oxygen out of the stain and are commonly referred to as dye strippers.

Sadly, if a cleaner has a dye stripper, it is usually “the purple liquid” that is collecting dust on a shelf. That is the equivalent of a carpenter using only a handsaw because the electric circular saw “is too dangerous.”

The less you attempt to do with a stain, the lower the risk. But the less you attempt to do with a stain, the greater the opportunity for someone else to exploit a perceived weakness in your operation.

Removing the fugitive dye left behind by the consumer, at a premium, should command a mark-up of at least 10%.

Being able to neutralize fugitive dye resulting from a mishandled garment will enhance your professionalism in the eyes of the customer.

NEUTRALIZING

Sodium bisulfite is a white powder that can be purchased from your supplier and is often used in the laundry area of the plant as a neutralizer when using chlorine bleach. It is effective as a bath or diluted in water and used at the spotting board.

To use sodium bisulfite at the spotting board, you should blend 1 teaspoon of the white powder with 4 ounces of water. This solution is excellent on berry stains, and is a good way to remove the last traces of iodine.

It can be applied in various ways, depending upon the size and location of the staining material. When a highly accurate application is required to avoid overlap, it can be applied with a toothpick.

When you desire a broader application of bleach, with slightly less accuracy, you can use a cotton swab to apply the bleach. Even broader application can be achieved when you use an eyedropper.

You should always test the sensitivity of the original dye before proceeding with stain removal by cutting a small piece of fabric from the inside seam allowance. Wet the fabric and apply the sodium bisulfite, plus a drop of 28% acetic acid. The acid will enhance the bleaching for the test, giving you a wide margin of safety for the original dye.

Sodium bisulfite can be used in a bath to remove the general shading when the fugitive dye is light and even.

Mix 1 tablespoon of bleach to each gallon of water used. Use a container large enough to allow easy movement of the garment. Do not soak.

Start with the solution at about 95 F. Keep the garment moving and gradually heat the solution until you achieve the desired results. Rinse the garment thoroughly after the fugitive dye is removed.

GET AGGRESSIVE

A more aggressive reducing bleach is sodium hydrosulfite. This bleach is used the same as sodium bisulfite.

Sodium hydrosulfite has characteristics that I find appealing. It can “whiten” white garments beyond the neutralization of chlorine bleach seen with sodium bisulfite.

Sodium hydrosulfite is effective on red dyes like wine and ink. When using sodium hydrosulfite in a bath, you should begin using sodium hydrosulfite in cool water by mixing 1 tablespoon of bleach to 2 gallons of water.

Gradually heat the solution to achieve the desired results. Do not soak the garments, but keep them moving to keep the dye removal even. Rinse the garments thoroughly to remove any residual bleach that could continue to

remove additional dye.

The most common reducing bleach being used is tita nium sulfate. This is a dark liquid that appears dark purple to black in color. It is my preferred chemical tool for the removal of residual blue dye and ink.

Applying titanium sulfate full strength with a wooden toothpick will safely remove the last traces of ink that are currently being returned to your customer with a “Sorry” tag. In a bleach bath, it removes large areas of fugitive dye.

Mix one ounce of titanium sulfate for each gallon of water used, in water at a temperature of around 100 F. Sub merge the garment and keep it moving to ensure even dye removal. Slowly add warm water until the desired results are produced. Rinse the garment thoroughly.

DIE, FUGITIVE DYE

Reducing bleaches have a place in garment restoration. They are a valuable chemical tool.

Fugitive dyes can and should be removed by a profes sional. You just have to make the effort to acquire the knowledge and experience to use these tools for your customer’s benefit.

There is a little trick that can make using any bleach a lit tle safer at the spotting board. This is a mineral oil barrier.

Apply a light coating of mineral oil to the dark side of the original dye using a wooden toothpick, a cotton swab

or an eyedropper. When you apply the bleach to the fugi tive dye on the light portion of the garment, the mineral oil will block the bleach from disturbing the original dark dye.

Potassium permanganate is a chemical tool that will get out stains in white fabric when all else fails.

Flush the stain over the vacuum nose of the spotting board. Apply a small amount of potassium permanganate, full strength, to the stain. Allow the stain to sit for about a minute, then flush the area over the vacuum nose of the spotting board.

You will be left with a tan/brown area that must be neu tralized, usually with your rust remover. Flush the area and dry. Apply a leveling agent and run again in the next appropriate run of clothes.

Far too many times, I see cleaners that simply do not make any effort to remove a stain. A vast majority of stains can be removed.

Continuing education will position you in your area to provide the best garment care and therefore be the founda tion for continuing success of your business. ADC

Lapels Dry Cleaning recently opened a second store in Cambridge, Mass., located at 168 Hampshire St.

24-hour locker store for the go crowd

MW Cleaners recently opened MW Clean Closet, a locker-based facility that is accessible around the clock. The new center is located at 12661 West Lake Houston Parkway, Houston, Texas.

“This is the first center of its kind in the country,” says Kyle E. Nesbit, vice president of MW Cleaners Business Development. “With its convenience, we’ve dubbed MW Clean Closet the ‘ATM of dry cleaning.’”

People on the go are able to drop off their garments and other items in a secure and convenient environment anytime, notes the company.

After a customer drops clothes off at the facility, MW Cleaners will clean and return them to either a 24/7accessible locker located at the facility, or deliver them, free of charge, to a home or office, the company says.

How it works: customers get an e-mail notifying them their cleaning is ready. In that e-mail, they receive a locker number and a unique PIN code to open the locker. This code will remain the same and unique to the cus tomer for as long as they use the Clean Closet service, MW Cleaners says.

The e-mail also provides the total amount the cus tomer’s credit card will be charged, along with the loca tion’s entrance door PIN code for after-hours access, and locker opening instructions.

Attendants will be available during most normal busi ness hours to assist customers, the company says.

“Our MW Clean Closet facility is an additional layer of convenience that we offer to our customers,” says Nesbit.

The delivery.com website and mobile app for local ecommerce recently expanded its partnership with Yelp by activating online ordering for laundry and dryclean ing services on the Yelp platform, delivery.com says.

“This is a really important step forward for local com merce, and laundry and dry cleaners specifically,” says Jed Kleckner, CEO of delivery.com.

“Today’s consumers expect to be able to transact any where and everywhere,” says Kleckner, “so the more places we can make that possible, the better it is for the digital economy as a whole.”

10 YEARS AGO. Small-business owners may be losing faith in the U.S. economy, says a survey from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). NFIB’s index of small-business optimism dropped 1.8 points to 96.7 in June, largely due to “souring expectations for real sales growth and confidence that the current period is a good time to expand substantially,” says William Dunkelberg, NFIB chief economist. … The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate for the 17th straight time June 29 to 5.25%. The Fed left the door open to extending the two-year-long “tightening” strategy against inflation, again warning that growth may moderate due to a cooling housing market and higher energy prices.

25 YEARS AGO. Four thousand home economists from around the country were given the opportunity to learn more about the benefits of dry cleaning from a staff member of the International Fabricare Institute. The industry’s goals and interests were represented at the recent annual meeting of the American Home Economics Association, held in Minneapolis, Minn., June 23-26. … The 1991 edition of the Neighborhood Cleaners Association’s Personal Guide to Drycleaning and Clothing Care is available, and it has been totally revised to add additional sections that may have been requested by many members to help educate customers. In the pocket-sized booklet, the process of dry cleaning is explained so customers have a better understanding of all that happens to their garments from the time they are brought in until the time they are picked up. The booklet covers the areas of problem fabrics, trimmings and stains, as well as a good explanation of depreciation for when a garment gets lost or damaged. The booklet’s new sections are titled Why Is Drycleaning Expensive?, How We Protect the Environment and How to Find a Good Drycleaner.

50 YEARS AGO. By the time this century ends—and 1999 isn’t so far off—mankind in general won’t be wearing a single garment made of natural material. That’s the prediction of the noted industrial designer, Henry Drey-

fuss. “By 2000 A.D. (which is really the start of the 21st century), we’ll look back on suits of animal hair and shoes of animal hides as barbaric at worst, or as ignorant practicality at the very least.” He was a featured speaker at the recent International Design Conference in Aspen, Colo. … A male and a female model slinging mud at each other’s permanent press clothes is part of a clinic being staged in at least three cities by Levi Strauss, which makes the clothes, and Whirlpool. The models then “disrobe into bathing suits,” as it’s delicately put, and the clothes are put into washers. After that, the models dress again. The demonstration was devised to educate the consumer about permanent press garments. It’s explained that a side-effect of the popularity of permanent press is that housewives sometimes don’t know how to wash clothes, and they (the clothes, not the housewives) come out of the dryer looking permanently slept-in.

75 YEARS AGO. After giving our readers a glance at the fantastic neckties of the past, we added this: “Cleaners can be thankful that modern neckties are what they are.” Since writing that, we’ve been reading in Daily News Record, the textile newspaper, about some of the “sugarcoated” neckwear being sold this summer in New York. Apparently, Saks Fifth Avenue stores are offering ties with colors so loud that they bring on dizzy attacks or indigestion. Salesmen who handle the ties all day long, it seems, “are beginning to feel as though they had eaten too much jam.” And store buyers, after looking the manufacturer’s stock over in the morning, “feel as though they had eaten ice cream for breakfast.” But the public seems to like all this “sartorial pastry.”

We are asked by many new and existing customers on what is our projected life expectancy of our products. We are not always the lowest initial price but know we have one of the lowest cost of ownership of any boiler manufactured in North America. These facts are based on our 90 plus years of boiler manufacturing, feedback and experiences from our end users, service departments, and all of our representatives and dealers worldwide. These life spans are based on our boilers being installed properly, and do receive our minimal recommended care, are applied to the correct application, and include the proper maintenance and water treatment programs.
