Perc users – chlorinated solvent belongs in your machine, not on your board. Alternative solvent users – use stain removers that align with your chosen solvent. Replace traditional POG’s and VDS’s with TarGo® EF and EasyGo®, two of Wilson’s high-performance, cost-effective, California-compliant stain removers. You'll be taking steps to avoid future regulatory and remediation nightmares, while providing your customers with the garment quality they desire!

EasyGo spray spotter quickly penetrates to absorb collar & cuff stains, perspiration, ground-in soil and more, all without brushing. Turn to TarGo EF to remove any tough oil based stains that remain behind.

Buyer’s Guide Valentine

Thinking about buying products and equipment? (What else are you going to do in February, other than eat chocolate and dream of summer?!)

Our 2017 Buyer’s Guide (call it the “BG”) has been updated literally to the day of its printing with first-hand fabricare industry info about firms you need to reach out to.

To put this together, I made phone calls, traded e-mails, communicated with many, and compiled a completely current listing of companies. (That’s not just the chocolate bragging!)

Take some time to check out all of the equipment and services.

It’s not as good as chocolate, OK, but it still hits the spot when you need to find a manufacturer fast.

Do you need machinery for your plant? Check us out!

Do you want to find a computer system or software company? We’ve got ’em!

Do you care to peruse makers of solvents or spotters, and purveyors of services? Here they are!

Can we keep asking question after question? Why not?(!)

The BG packs a wallop (like grampa’s Super Bowl rum punch), with two sections chock-full to overflowing with companies.

The Products & Services section, beginning on page 8, delivers company names in alphabetical order by category.

The Manufacturers & Providers section, starting on page 22, puts your fingertips on company addresses, contact names, websites and e-mail addresses, also in alpha order.

Our 2017 BG is important, as you see. So get comfy, grab your favorite candy, and take a look at all your industry has to offer.

Also in this issue, we bring you the latest Talk of the Trade survey results about listening to customers, and a special feature about workers’ comp, among other treats.

Life isn’t just like “a box of chocolates,” it’s also like an easy-to-use Buyer’s Guide, too! (See what I did there?) ADC

Listen Up!

Listening is important.

The most recent American Drycleaner Your Views survey asks the trade audience if they want and ask for customer reviews of their operations and listen to what these customers tell them.

Seventy-two percent of survey respondents say they do want and ask for customer reviews, and 80% use customer comments to help shape improvements to their business.

How do respondents use customer comments? Here are some of their responses:

• “Suggestion box on counter and on website.”

• “Built a new location to provide abundant parking and drive-thru availability.”

• “We use the ‘Reviewmydrycleaner’ product from becreative360 (a marketing company for dry cleaners) to solicit client feedback and help with reputation management.”

• “Mostly about problem employees. Training.”

• “When we see a consistent request to do things differently, then we change, if we can accommodate it.”

• “When I get a good review or comment from customers, I tell all the employees.”

The survey asks if dry cleaners check out various social media for customer comments; two-thirds of respondents indicate they do “always” or “often.”

Asked if their operation exceeds customer expectations, 95% of respondents say “always” or “often.”

The survey asks respondents how being a good listener has helped their operations. Here are some responses:

• “You cannot assume you understand the customers’ issues, until you have heard them out.”

• “Reinforces employee morale and keeps the focus on great service and how important it is!”

• “Listening to customers is how we built our business.”

The final question on the survey asks respondents to share the best customer suggestion they’ve ever received. Here is what three respondents shared:

• “We were getting a significant amount of negative feedback on upcharges. The clients could not

understand why we charge different prices for the same garments. We adapted and changed our price structure to remove upcharges and include in the pricing.”

• “Don’t retire or sell.”

• “Early on in business, one of my customers was the wife of one of the state’s most successful dry cleaners. She told me I should attend state association meetings to gain increased knowledge to operate my business. I took her advice, and it made me a businessman in the drycleaning business instead of a dry cleaner in business.”

The Your Views survey is a snapshot of the trade audience’s views. Qualified subscribers to American Drycleaner e-mails are invited to participate anonymously in the unscientific poll.

TO MAJOR COMPANY PRESIDENT FROM CLEANER/PRESSER

BY WAY of GREENEARTH CLEANING

As President of MW Cleaners and President elect of DLI, Michael is one of dry cleaning’s most influential leaders. At age 21, he and a partner opened their first plant. Ever since, he’s been an innovator in operations, plant design, packaging and customer service. He currently serves his church, those in need of eye care in Africa, and is devoted to his family and the 455 people he employs. This sincere concern for people has been his driving force for safe non-toxic cleaning using today’s most sustainable practices -- now and for the future.

I was tired of using out-of-date software, so when I saw SMRT in action, the choice was easy. My employees love it, and I’ve never been more in tune with my customers. To top it all off, their customer service is second to none.

This new software makes it even more convenient. I set up an account, and they automatically charge my card when I pick it up, so it’s as quick as possible!

Is the workers’ compensation insurance coverage for your drycleaning operation fully protecting you and your employees?

Are you getting the most cost savings you can? Here are six tips from dry cleaners and other business owners to help you find out.

Drycleaning business owners now, more than ever, need to be aware of their workers’ compensation coverages and be involved in the process of mitigating potential claim situations for their teams.

“A dollar saved on your insurance coverage when you start a policy is not necessarily a dollar saved in the long run,” says Jamie Albano, president and CEO of Albano Cleaners in Virginia. “Owners need to know their coverage, know their business, and have an agent who can know the details. Otherwise, a ‘savings’ on a policy could cost you a lot of money.”

She has a good point.

As the drycleaning industry evolves and changes, owners and managers face increased regulations, high client expectations, and the potential for decreasing profits.

Ben Latta, owner and CEO of Master Dry Cleaners, also located in Virginia, describes the situation as: “Trying to give clients an Outback-quality product on a McDonald’s budget.”

Today, there is an emergence of more efficient machinery. There are “green solution” cleaning products. There are also increased regulations from OSHA in regards to slips, falls and burns (among the most common workers’ compensation injuries in the drycleaning field).

In working hands-on with workers’ compensation accounts in the drycleaning industry and speaking with owners in the Hampton Roads, Va. area, six tips are identified here that drycleaning owners and managers can consider

when selecting workers’ compensation insurance.

These tips could not only save your operation a significant amount of money, but also help protect your business from lawsuits, decreased production, and lowered team morale:

THE ‘EMR’

Every business owner or manager should obtain a detailed review of their Experience Modification Rate (EMR) for their workers’ compensation plan.

Note: Experience Modification Rate, or EMR, according to Wikipedia, is a term used in the American insurance business, specifically in workers’ compensation insurance, to determine the adjustment of annual premium based on previous loss experience, usually three years.

If your business meets minimum premium qualifications, then it automatically qualifies for an EMR rating.

This EMR rating compares the losses of your business with similar businesses to determine if your claims are better or worse than expected and then modifies your premium accordingly.

For example, a business with a .75 experience modification factor will save 25% on workers’ compensation. A business with a 1.25 experience modification factor will pay 25% more than the standard premium.

The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), which gathers data, analyzes industry trends, and prepares objective insurance rate and loss cost recom-

46 American Drycleaner, February 2017 www.americandrycleaner.com
By Kelley Carter (Image licensed by Ingram Publishing)

mendations, is the organization that calculates experience modification factors.

Sometimes, errors can be corrected within a prescribed time frame of a policy renewal, so it is vital that you verify your experience modification factor with your agent.

JOB CLASSIFICATION

Every owner and manager should check their job classifications and payroll.

Businesses typically have employees spanning several different job categories. Each employee will be classified in the highest rated category for the work they do.

For example: workers’ compensation is fundamentally broken down per job category that is held within your company (cleaners, delivery personnel, front desk, administration, etc.) and the payroll amounts designated for each of these job sections.

If your policy is covering all of your employees at a higher-risk-level job, your premiums would typically be higher than if you segmented these jobs out.

An example would be seen in the difference between a job classification of a route driver vs. an administration person who performs office functions.

Since there is more opportunity to be injured as a driver than typically as an admin team member, the costs associ-

ated would typically be higher for the former.

However, it’s important to review the job classification for each individual to ensure that each employee is classified properly and you are not paying for a higher job class.

While an audit may correct any discrepancies after the fact, a comprehensive review of job classifications and payrolls when you start or renew a policy can keep your cost down throughout the year.

CERTIFICATES FOR CONTRACTED WORK

Every owner and manager should maintain certificates of insurance for all contracted work.

Businesses are responsible for and are charged for workers’ compensation on all contracted labor unless the business has a current certificate of insurance on file for the contracted company. This can include contractors used for building repairs, janitorial cleaning operations, auto fleet maintenance, etc.

It is prudent to retain this certificate on file for each vendor you utilize and to obtain the certificate before work begins on a project.

Filing the certificates in a single place will streamline your worker’s compensation audit and ensure that you do not miss any vendors and inadvertently get charged for their work. (continued)

SAFETY

Every owner and manager should maintain a culture of safety.

In speaking with Albano, she mentions that at Albano Cleaners’ drycleaning plant locations, management does regular walk-throughs on extremely hot days to make sure that employees are drinking water and taking food breaks.

“These people are our family,” says Albano. “Being hands-on with the management of safety for my team is a way to, first and foremost, keep them safe.”

Latta echoes a similar sentiment when discussing safety management for his plant location: “We have members of the management team on the floor all day, every day, six days a week. By being present, we are able to help mitigate possible issues and prevent falls and burns. Our goal is to serve with excellence not just our clients, but our team as well.”

Being present and aware of issues can be as simple as making sure your team is drinking water on hot days, taking regularly scheduled breaks, removing boxes and debris from walkways, and mopping up spills immediately.

It also means advising and training your team on burn prevention, performing routine safety inspections, hosting company training through your insurance agent’s losscontrol department or through OSHA, and keeping your

equipment inspected and running correctly.

Some insurance companies provide safety training as a partner-resource for clients at no charge.

Also, a vital part of maintaining a culture of safety is to have an updated employee safety manual that every single employee is required to read and sign off on before starting employment with your company.

It may sound tedious, but it is recommended that you have employees sign or initial each page of the manual.

This provides a paper trail of evidence that you performed due diligence in making your team aware of dangers and took steps to mitigate those risks.

PHYSICIANS PANEL

Every owner and manager should provide a panel of physicians for injured employees.

Even with hands-on management and lossmitigation techniques, accidents still occur. When they do, how you handle the process can either help protect your business or expose it to legal harm.

This step may seem odd to some owners. However, Virginia state law, for instance, requires that each employer provide injured employees with a panel of three physicians from which an employee can choose to consult.

Providing a panel of physicians ensures that the employ-

ee is properly taken care of and can assist in minimizing “extended” work outages.

It is recommended that you speak with your agent to become familiar with the laws in your state.

JOB RETURN

Owners and managers should focus on returning their employees to work promptly. This can be tricky.

Many owners relate that employees do not want to miss work, and are concerned that if they report an injury, they will be fired.

“We always encourage our employees to seek treatment,” Latta says. “They want to keep working, but we might have to modify their job until the injury is recovered.”

Albano shares a compatible philosophy practiced within her company: “Owners have to utilize job modification for their people. Otherwise, people are going unpaid and missing out on money they need for their families, and the company is looking at a long workers’ compensation payout, which costs money.”

It should be noted that owners should always encourage and allow injured employees to seek medical attention. Any and all responses and actions should be documented.

If the employee refuses medical treatment, the incident should still be documented and the owner may consider having the employee sign a waiver that states they declined to seek medical treatment against their employer’s recommendation to do so.

This practice, while by no means foolproof, does provide a paper trail of compliance that can be helpful.

CONCLUSION: HAVE A PLAN

Finally, successful owners and managers consistently mention that “not all insurance is created equal.”

All owners should take a hands-on approach to their workers’ compensation and business insurance policies.

The owners that view business insurance as a nuisance miss the point that insurance is in place for their business to provide protection to keep their operation running.

Neglecting this area of your company’s management makes about as much sense as neglecting to inspect your steam boilers or neglecting to train your employees.

Incorporating these steps for your company’s workers’ compensation into your business plan can help you save money, lower claims and increase productivity, all of which are vital to helping you plan, achieve and protect the growth of your company.

Good planning is good business!

All The

Making Right Moves

Brainstorming and Five Star Conference gets all revved up

Down here in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, at the Now Onyx resort complex, the dynamic weather — palmtree-whipped and windy — aptly reflected the surges of energy 120 drycleaning industry professionals could feel from three dynamic speakers at mid-January’s Brainstorming and Five Star Conference.

“This is my first NCA/DLI conference and I’m looking for new ideas to gain an edge,” says Jon Conant, owner, Master Drycleaners, Traverse City, Mich., on the first morning. Later, on the third day, he gave me a resounding thumbs-up on the entire program!

Sporting a badass leather jacket, Ken Schmidt, retired director of communications at Harley-Davidson, opened the Saturday morning activities with a blunt statement for eager attendees: “Make some noise!”

Scott Nanfelt, owner of Delken Professional Cleaners out of Fall River, Mass., nods and says, “If you are here at this conference, then you

are probably doing things right and want to do them better.”

Through what he calls a “lens of reality,” Schmidt talks about competition: “There’s not a business in 2017 that is gonna let you down. Everybody is good at what they do.

“Honda makes great products, too,” he nods. So what did HarleyDavidson do?

He points out to attendees that “your worth is built on reputation!”

Schmidt asks what customers are going to say about you, then makes this powerful retort: “When no story is being told about your business, no demand gets built.”

The point of business, he says, is to make people feel good about what they have passion about.

The objective is not to sell, the objective is to make an advocate out of everyone who comes in the door.

He tells the audience of fabricare professionals, “I asked three big questions at Harley. One, what are people saying about us? Two, what do we want them to say? Three, what are

we doing to get them to say it? I posted these on the walls at Harley.”

Harley-Davidson’s image used to be “bad-guy bikers.” Biker shops were ugly turn-offs, too, he says.

“Looks turn people off. We’re visually dominant,” Schmidt notes. “People assumed Harley was dirty and bad. So stores were made beautiful, with glass, some two-story.”

If you’re doing the same thing as everyone else, and not differentiating yourself, then you are a commodity, he says boisterously. Plenty of nods and knowing smiles meet his eye.

“Make vocal advocates out of the people you serve right now,” Schmidt says. Again, pens are moving fast. Customers move on “gut,” not “brain,” he reminds with a grin. Play to human ego, he adds.

One hundred percent of the human race needs validation, he says.

“Why does every single biker roll on the throttle at a stop sign?” He rolls his wrist, imitating how a biker does it. Everyone grins. “First, a little noise, then more, then all-out throttle

50 American Drycleaner, February 2017 www.americandrycleaner.com
FIVE STAR WRAP-UP:

to turn your head. Those bikers are all saying the same thing: Look at me!”

Uniquely recognize your customer coming in your door: “You look great in that leather coat.”

Kenspeak: “Visible body language! Your counter people are key — get with them and make them understand that customers want to be noticed genuinely. Customers return to sources of joy.”

He ends with: Creating demand is the owner’s responsibility.”

An applause eruption happens! Harley questions, laughter and handshakes roll with him out the door.

Right after, I asked Rafiq Karimi, owner of CD One Price Cleaners, Westchester, Ill., his takeaway. He tells me it makes him ask, “What kind of story do you want your customer telling about you?” That question is worth thinking about.

Lorynn Divita, Ph.D., from Baylor

University, says on Friday, “‘Athleisure’ wear has affected clothing big, but the market is saturated and activewear sales are dropping.”

She indicates to an attentive crowd that “fast fashions” are the cause of cheaply made clothes and cheap labor in foreign countries. But awareness is causing a return to quality; good news for dry cleaning.

“We’re on the cusp of fashion change now,” she says. “Spending on clothing is up for the first time in a long time.” Heads nod. Pens move across papers.

Trends spotted now, she says, include leather alternatives, return to denim, and sequins.

On the conference’s final morning, Larry Oxenham, author and senior adviser from the American Society for Asset Protection, in Las Vegas, calls on attendees to look now to protect their future assets.

“Take the money out of lawsuits

and the lawsuit goes away,” he notes as a strong eye-opener to the morning. He goes on to provide tips on protecting one’s hard-earned money, noting a C corporation is better protection than an S corporation, but it also is determined by where you live.

You can have a legal entity in any of the 50 states, not just in the state you live, he points out. For instance, he says, “Ninety percent of Fortune 100 companies have Nevada Corp.” as their ownership.

Attendees are impressed, and the room is still full on this final morning.

The co-hosts, the National Cleaners Association (NCA) and the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), put together this conference for drycleaning industry owners from all over the U.S. and Canada to socialize, network and hear new ideas.

O XX O launches multi-unit franchising strategy

OXXO Care Cleaners®, the Hollywood, Fla.-based envi ronmentally friendly garment cleaning franchise, says it is pursuing a multi-unit franchise strategy in the U.S.

Having sold 50 franchise stores to date, and to fully consolidate the OXXO brand, founder and CEO Salo mon Mishaan has developed the multi-unit strategy.

“We believe in and have been laser-focused on chang ing traditional dry cleaning to help make it earth- and people-friendly, with sustainability and satisfying our customers’ needs as top priorities,” says Mishaan. “Multi-unit franchising is the next logical step in grow ing our business!”

OXXO recently signed an agreement with Guillermo Gallegos and Alexander Quintanilla, area developers, who will own the region from Orlando to Jacksonville, Fla. They are charged with building out 20 franchises in 10 years, the franchisor says.

An individual OXXO store costs approximately $450,000. The more OXXO stores one buys, the more the franchisee will save, the company adds.

This news comes on the heels of OXXO’s internation al expansion via multi-unit franchise sales in Indonesia.

T oys collected, delivered by MW Cleaners

MW Cleaners recently organized its second annual MW Cares Toy Drive to benefit the Houston Salva tion Army’s Angel Tree program, reports Mike Nesbit, president of MW Cleaners. Toys collected throughout November were delivered to the Salvation Army in early December.

The MW Cleaners team not only delivered the toys, but as a thank-you, also treated the Salvation Army volunteers to a special breakfast cooked by MW’s execu tives.

The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Choir was also on hand to provide holiday cheer through music.

MW Cleaners started its MW Cares Toy Drive for Angels Nov. 1. Customers picked up “Angels” with toy

suggestions on them at the 36 Houston area MW Clean ers, the company says. Families in need signed up for assistance in October. To qualify, the family had to meet federal minimum poverty guidelines.

“As the ‘neighborhood dry cleaner,’ we depend on the support of our local communities,” Nesbit says. “We be lieve that means we have a corporate responsibility to give back to the people in those areas, whether they are our customers or not.”

It was 1941 when the Ashmore family, led by brothers Jim, Robert and Joe, along with experienced laundry manager and new brother-in-law Eddie Vassallo, formed Sunshine Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Dallas, the com pany notes.

Being resourceful, the owners recognized a growth op portunity in purchasing property on Maple Avenue next to Parkland Hospital. That same block on Maple still serves as home to the oldest and one of Dallas’ largest laundry and drycleaning operations, the company points out.

Today, three generations and 75 years later, Sunshine Laundry and Dry Cleaners continues to thrive.

The family respects tradition, the company notes, carry ing on Dallas’ best-kept beauty secret – Sunshine-pressed sheets.

Bed sheets are laundered, pressed, folded neatly, wrapped in paper and carried to a customer’s car with a smile and wish for a perfect night’s sleep, the company explains.

“Once you have slept on pressed sheets,” Sunshine says, “you’ll never go back!”

The four founders ran the business until it was passed down to the second generation of the Ashmore family. Then Frank Sr., joined by cousin Jerry, carried on the leg acy and continual growth with facility expansions in 1953 and again in 1960.

In 2011, Sunshine invested in the Stemmons Corridor area to build a completely new production plant with stateof-art equipment, improved efficiency and emphasis on green initiatives, the company notes.

Its retail storefront remains on Maple Avenue but across the street from the original location.

Thousands of pieces are processed daily in the production facility serving a wide range of industries, including healthcare and, with a nod to Sunshine’s roots, hospitality.

10 YEARS AGO. U.S. retail sales showed their best gains in five months, increasing 0.9% in December. The biggest winners were electronics stores, where sales grew 3%. Leisure products such as sporting goods, music and books slipped 0.1%, but clothing sales rose 0.6% despite an expected slowdown for winter-wear due to the relatively mild holiday season. … Demand for oil fell as temperatures rose this winter. Prices plunged to a 20-month low as traders increased supplies to ready for the season’s typical requirements, but demand actually dropped due to warmer weather. Responsible for 80% of U.S. heating-oil demand, the Northeast is running 43% below normal use.

25 YEARS AGO. On Feb. 19, IFI and other litigants will present arguments against the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s new perc standard of 25 parts per million at the U.S. Court of Appeals, 11th Circuit, in Atlanta. IFI lawyers will present oral arguments defending their written briefs which were presented to the court in April 1990 and January 1991. Other litigants also will present their oral arguments. … At the invitation of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an IFI staffer attended a meeting at CPSC headquarters on “Fire Hazards of Vegetable Oil-Soaked Fabrics.” During the meeting, information was presented on the results of an investigation of three fires involving a load of freshly laundered terry towels taken from dryers and left in a pile. The first two fires occurred in the baskets and the third on a chair. Analyses conducted by Whirlpool Corporation revealed that the towels from the third fire contained up to 30% by weight of vegetable oil.

50 YEARS AGO. Permanent-press garments get more play in the latest mail-order catalogs. The Sears catalog for this spring and summer carries “never-iron” items on 128 pages, and has a special index for these garments. The new Montgomery Ward catalog has twice as many permanent-press men’s sport shirts, pajamas and robes listed, compared with last year’s, and 30% more “never-

iron” women’s fashions. … Plasticel is a new fabric that a fashion writer describes as “sort of kissing kin to the paper styles.” The plasticcoated paper fabric looks a bit like puckered wax paper with crispness removed, “but much softer and a dozen times more pliable.” It’s also much thinner than the vinyl coats and disk dresses of last year — more flexible and much lighter — so it can allegedly be worn on balmy days without making the wearer feel hot and clammy. It can be wiped with a damp cloth. It’s not guaranteed to be fire-resistant after washing or dry cleaning. One California designer, described as “a staunch believer in disposable clothes,” includes elaborate long gowns of Plasticel and Kaycel (cellulose and nylon blend). Apparently she’s got something for everybody. The price range for a custom-made shreddedpaper coat is from $12 to $200.

75 YEARS AGO. A cleaner in Neenah, Wis., discovered an original way to make the most out of the current tire shortage. A recent snowstorm in Neenah was his inspiration. A photo shows the owner of the cleaner sitting in a sleigh pulled by a team of horses with a sign that explains that the cleaner will continue to make deliveries even after tires are worn out. (Ed. Note: This photo appeared in the Feb. 1942 issue of American Drycleaner magazine.) The owner reports that a two-hour trip through town got him plenty of attention not to mention “raspberries.” The stunt accounted for several good newspaper stories and was featured in Twin City ads. … An owner of a San Diego cleaner fathers more than 13,000 children. As one of his associates remarked, “Some father!” The children are members of the American Kids Club, of which the owner is president and founder, and which is sponsored by his cleaners and the San Diego Tribune-Sun ADC
