The show officially called the “International Trade Fair for Modern Textile Care” — that we know as Texcare Asia — is coming to Shanghai, China, to the New International Expo Centre, Sept. 27-29. Show organizers expect a big crowd of 11,000 attendees and more than 160 exhibitors from around the world. The show features special areas such as the German Area, Japanese Area, and RFID Zone Tim Burke, Editor
“The support from CBS was great. Even before we signed up, they were responsive and flexible in their approach. They have helped our team become more efficient.”
“We’re moving faster. We’re moving better. We’re moving more efficiently. That means profitability”
Yesterday, I noticed a spill on my golf shirt. Three dried coffee drips in a row stained a small area halfway down my gut, in the “chocolate donut” region.
I looked down, made a face as if to will the spots away, then chalked it up to fate. What was my next step, you might ask? (But you already know, being in the biz as you are.)
I took a cup of cold water. Used my finger to put a few drops on each coffee spot. Waited a moment. Then took a paper napkin, dabbed at each spot, blotting them up. To my amazement, gone went the coffee stains! OMG! I had removed spots all by myself. No washing machine. No dry cleaning. (Yes, I said that.)
“So he got stains out, whoop-dee-doo,” you’re sayin’ right now.
That doesn’t mean that shirt doesn’t need to still be professionally cleaned to keep it looking great.
Just like using a qualified car mechanic to keep their car in top shape, drycleaning customers need professional maintenance on their clothing to keep them in great shape, too.
Environmentally safe formulas, advanced spotting, efficient machines, and the knowledge to use them to give customers greatlooking threads is what you do. You’re beautifiers!
My coffee drips came with a shot of realization that can’t just be blotted away: You fight a perception you aren’t needed anymore.
Truth: You’re needed now more than ever in an age of specialized fabrics and advanced textiles. And also in simply “doing the wash” for clients who will pay to have it done rather than do it themselves. OK, now, enough about blotting.
In this issue, we bring you our Distributors Directory, fully equipped to equip you fully (nice, huh?), starting on page 8. We also have a new Talk of the Trade survey report called Planet of the ‘Apps’; the conclusion to Cooling Towers by Mike Tatch; a new Off the Cuff; a new Yarns Spun Here about silk; and much more. A feature called Kickin’ It High Style, on page 34, is about the Texcare Asia show Sept. 27-29, in Shanghai, China, where I’ll be traveling to scope it out. I think Confucius said: To blot is human, to dry-clean divine! … Or maybe I said it. ADC

es,” “Yes” and “Yes” are some of the answers to the question: “Are apps the way of the future?”
The most recent American Drycleaner Your Views survey asks the trade audience to tell us about their experiences going digital and offering “apps” to their customers. Here are some of the responses:
• “Customers love it.”
• “Everyone is on the go and you need to provide ease of use for consumers to reach you.”
• “Up and down.”
• “Anticipating providing this service in the future.”
• “With limited phone space and pretty specialized use, it is difficult to get customers to download an app. We think it’s cool, but customers don’t care about a drycleaning app.”
• “Lot of work, little results.”
• “Faster service to get order ready.”
• “Positive.”
Dry cleaners were asked, “Do you offer your customers an app for your drycleaning business?” The graph at right shows that 41% do not. Of note is that 59% either do offer an app (23%) or want to (36%).
“Why aren’t you offering an app?” the survey asks. Here are some more responses:
• “Need the time to explore and start one.”
• “Haven’t found one to fit our business model.”
• “Don’t understand exactly what the benefit would be.”
• “Not exactly sure what I would offer on the app.”
• “Customers have access through our website and I feel like that is enough for our business.”
• “I am looking to offer one. I would like one that integrates with my POS system.”
• “Expensive.”
Of the respondents who have apps, 70% indicated they partnered with an app developer. The other 30% designed their own (12%) or had help designing it (18%).
“If you have an app, how does it benefit your company?” the survey inquired.
One person says, “Allows customers access to their history; lets us know they are on the way so we can have their order pulled and ready; they can check their loyalty points, order a pickup or delivery. Also, we send
messages in real time that pop up on their end.”
More comments about apps as “the way of the future”:
• “Possibly, interested in what the feature might be.”
• “One way.”
• “Depends on your customer base.”
• “Mobile ordering is the way of the future. Most people nowadays make the majority of their purchases on their mobile phones so I think it’s smart to have our brand on their phone.”
• “Absolutely not! They have been available for years and I can’t see them making much of an impact.”
• “110% the future.”
• “Yes, but you have to make the app functions useful enough to create demand. For obvious reasons, younger customers are more inclined to download and use the app.”
• “Yes. Go big, or go home!”
The Your Views survey offers a current snapshot of the trade audience’s views. Qualified subscribers to American Drycleaner e-mails are invited to participate anonymously in the unscientific poll.

A new name. A fresh brand. A state-of-the-art plant. Lifestyle Garment Care (formerly Roth Cleaners), in Midland, Mich., is transforming. Paul White, a veteran textile care expert, purchased the business from his father 30 years ago. Since then, he’s witnessed major industry changes; among them the emergence of wet cleaning and its potential in today’s society. “We wanted our business name to represent who we are and what we do,” said White. “We provide ‘Garment Care to fit your Lifestyle’.”
Spurred by enthusiasm to grow wet cleaning revenue, White outfitted a section of the new plant with a mix of Poseidon Textile Care Systems® (Poseidon) softmount wet cleaning machines and dryers. “The technology for wet cleaning has improved so much, we could operate without a dry cleaning machine,” said White. “We always do what we think is professionally best for each garment.”
We can wet clean, dry and finish a suit in one hour. Poseidon allows us to wet clean challenging garments like wool suits and wedding gowns without worry.
Lifestyle Garment Care now processes 80 percent of all incoming garments using the Poseidon wet cleaning machines; the remaining 20 percent is dry cleaned. Programmability makes it possible to wet clean everything from silks, wools and cashmeres to cottons, linens and synthetics.
- Paul White, Owner Lifestyle Cleaners
Poseidon Wet Cleaning Machines offer 20 pre-programmed cycles and up to 79 individually modifiable cycles. All variables are programmable, including water temperature by degree, wash rotation speed and duration, wash rotation combinations, water levels, bath cool-down by degree, and extract speeds up to 400 G-force. Operators
just load, select a program number and press start. Chemicals are automatically injected, according to White. Items move from wet cleaning into the Poseidon Dryer, and finally, to finishing. The dryer features moisture-sensing technology, drum-rotation control and timed reversing to safely dry virtually any item type, including gowns, coats, dresses and sweaters. “Items come out of the dryer soft and wrinkle free with just enough moisture that the presser doesn’t have to do much with it,” said White. This saves time and energy over traditional dry cleaning. “We can wet clean, dry and finish a suit in one hour,” said White. “Poseidon allows us to wet clean challenging garments like wool suits and wedding gowns without worry. It allows me complete control over my equipment and my destiny.”
Amped about the future, White will soon debut Lifestyle Laundry Care — an offshoot of Lifestyle Garment Care — that caters to area residents looking for wash/dry/fold
services, pickup and delivery.
Operating out of the same location, Lifestyle Laundry Care wash/dry/fold will complement White’s already booming garment care/dry cleaning business, which is the largest in the Great Lakes Bay region. In doing so, Lifestyle Laundry Care will further harness the potential of the company’s Poseidon wet cleaning equipment.
Once launched, White expects wet cleaning revenue to significantly increase current sales volume. In a single shift, his Poseidon equipment has the potential to serve 30 families and process 1,600 pounds of wet cleaned wash/dry/fold laundry per day. Read full story at poseidonwetcleaning.com

E-mail Editor Tim Burke, tburke@ atmags.com, to be added to our free online Distributors Directory at www.americandrycleaner.com and to next year’s print edition!
The party is on, people! There’s magic in the air. And Shanghai is lit up and ready! We’re gonna kick it, Asian style!
It’s called the “International Trade Fair for Modern Textile Care.” But that’s a long name.
Texcare Asia is what we all know it by. And it will be headlining at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, Shanghai, China, near the end of this month, for three days: Sept. 27-29.
“Over 95% of exhibition space at Texcare Asia is booked to key international and domestic players,” says one of the two show organizers, Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co. Ltd.
According to Messe Frankfurt and co-host China Light Industry Machinery Association (CLIMA), the show is drawing a “wave of elevated enthusiasm.”
SMP, Chuandao, Datamars, EazyClean, Ecolab, Electrolux, Girbau, Hohenstein, Jensen, Kannegiesser, Lapauw, Maxi-Press, Miele, Oasis, Sailstar, Sankosha, Sealion, Seitz, Stahl, TOTO, Vega, Veit, Voss, Weishi, and Yamamoto.
These firms, and others, look to tap into China’s ever-growing industry presence.
Richard Li, general manager of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai), says the textile care and cleaning industry in Asia, and particularly in China, is undergoing major transformation.
“While the demands on laundry service in Asia are increasing rapidly, there’s also an emerging need for more personalized and diversified service,” he says.
This stylishly clothed gent seemingly defies gravity in a hallway in Shanghai, China. International trade fair Texcare Asia will, however, obey the rules of gravity and land later this month, Sept. 27-29, for three days at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. (Photo: Alessio Lin/Unsplash)
“Wave” is the right description for the Shanghai event since the city name itself means “upon the sea.” This large, cosmopolitan, coastal metropolis of 25 million will play host to an expected 11,000 attendees and more than 160 exhibitors. (Local companies from China will be represented, and also from 20 other countries, including the United States, UK, Australia, France, Italy, and Japan).
By showcasing their product advancements to major Asian buyers this month, many of these global companies want to capitalize on the fair’s position as Asia’s leading event for innovations in textile care.
Organizers say confirmed participating companies, as of press time, include Baiqiang, BÖWE, BÜFA, Castic-
“In recent years, a number of industry players have made significant progress on automation and innovations to cater to these needs, under the backdrop of increased operational expenditure and raised environmental awareness.
“At the same time, the global industry is catering to these growing needs, by exploring the ways in which their advanced technologies can be adopted by the Asian market.”
Numerous dedicated areas will highlight the growth potential of these Asian markets.
Demonstrating the spirit of internationalism of exhibitors at this year’s fair, both Kannegiesser and Miele will be part of the German Area during Texcare Asia. This dedicated section gathers 10 leading players from Germany to demonstrate their role in serving the Asian market, and includes BÖWE, Hohenstein, and Seitz.
Similarly, a dedicated Japanese Area will bring together a group of key Japanese brands, including ASAHI, San-Ai, TOTO, YAC and Yamamoto. Sankosha, also exhibiting in that area, is a laundry and drycleaning technology manufacturer that is set to launch over 10 new types of shirt-pressing equipment during the show, organizers point out.
Sankosha says the technologies include drycleaning machines, extractors, recovery dryers, and folding machines. They have been tailored to serve the Chinese market, the company adds.
Additionally, a separate RFID Zone (radio frequency identification) will feature various field experts, including Autovalet, Bundle, Datamars, Etexsys, Finove, Thermopatch and Zucchetti.

The track-and-trace capabilities of RFID technology increase the visibility, accuracy and efficiency at wash-
ing workshops, by automatically tracking the status of each garment and to prevent items from being lost.
In this zone, for instance, technology company Datamars will demonstrate to visitors how the company’s own RFID solutions can help laundry shops save on operational costs.
“Laundering technology company Kannegiesser, who is a global player in the heavy-duty laundry machinery market, will be showcasing various smart and automated laundry advancements,” show organizers note.
What’s more, fellow German exhibitor Miele, a commercial laundry technology developer, is hoping to explore the potential of the Asian market at the show.
“Moving to its ninth edition, the fair will continue to be a one-stop sourcing and networking platform for the Asian community,” Li relates.

A cooling tower is a simple device used by many dry cleaners to cool their drycleaning machines (DCM).
Cooling towers are a relatively inexpensive and dependable means of removing heat from DCMs. There are other ways to cool your equipment, but if you are paying for electricity and water, a cooling tower is often the most economical.
Cooling towers use the outside air to cool water that is circulated through the DCM’s refrigeration heat exchangers, still condensers and/or solvent coolers.
In an evaporative cooling tower, some of the water being cooled evaporates into a moving air stream. When water evaporates, it removes lots of heat from the rest of the water. Each one pound of water that is evaporated removes approximately 1,000 Btu from the system.
Water lost through evaporation is
replaced by what is called “makeup” (city water). Removing heat by evaporation is highly efficient. You can cool a large amount of water with only a small amount of evaporation.
An electric pump takes the water from the storage tank and pushes it through the coils in the DCM. The water picks up heat from the coils and then flows out of the DCM and up to the cooling tower.
It goes up to the top of the cooling tower and flows through the tower from top to bottom. The water is cooled. Cool water then drains out of the bottom of the tower through a large pipe down to a storage tank where the pump starts the cycle over again. (See the graphic on page 38.)
Depending on the size of the tower, this water flow can be 75-300 gallons per minute (GPM). Most of the water is reused at 93%.
The key to tower performance is rapid water flow. A cooling tower
doesn’t drop the water temperature as much as a refrigeration unit, so the higher flow makes up the difference.
For small applications such as dry cleaners, the most commonly used towers are mushroom-shaped assemblies housing evaporative cooling tower with distribution arms (also called “sprinkler arms”).
Warmed water is pumped to the tower inlet. The water flows through the inside of the standpipe and is distributed through the sprinkler arms, located above the fill. (See page 39 graphic.)
The bottom of the sprinkler arms have a series of holes that are pointed at a slight angle. The water is forced out of the holes, and the reactive force causes the arms to rotate. In this way, the water is distributed evenly into a thick maze of corrugated plastic called “the fill.”
Many towers put blades on top of the sprinkler arms to help rotate the arms using the air flow from the fan. At the same time, a large fan, located at the tower’s top, pulls large volumes of air (10,000-20,000 cubic feet per minute) into the tower and out the top.
The air enters the tower through a screened cylinder which wraps around the circumference of the tower just up from the bottom (inlet louver). The dry air in (as shown in the graphic on page 39) goes through the fill from the bottom to the top. The heat is transferred to the air.
Cooling towers should be installed and maintained in accordance with the operator’s manual provided by the manufacturer.
Because the tower is outside and air is being pulled into the tower and out the top, air contaminants (dust, dirt, leaves and insects) can accumulate on the inlet louvers and/or inside the tower. In addition, because the tower is exposed to heat and sunlight, bacteria can grow on inside surfaces of the tower.
It is recommended that, at least twice a year, the tower and storage tank be cleaned and disinfected. The cleaning should include removal of the fan and power-washing all internal surfaces of the tower and storage tank, with all the cleaning water and debris drained to the sewer.
In addition, the sprinkler arms should be inspected and cleaned inside and out and repaired if required. All interior surfaces should be thoroughly inspected.
It is recommended that spare parts be on hand before cleaning. The spare parts should include replacement inlet louvers; replacement spindle, washer and support wires for the sprinkler arm; and a bottom drain filter, as a minimum.
First, let’s understand the different types of solids in water, using the following simple examples:
Add sugar to a glass of water and stir. The initial teaspoon of sugar dissolves completely in the water. It is not visible, but it’s there. The sugar that is in solution is called “dissolved solids.”
As you add more and more sugar, the water becomes saturated and the sugar no longer dissolves. It begins to swirl in the water as you stir it and drops to the bottom when you stop. The sugar that swirls when you stir the glass is called “suspended solids.”
The sugar that drops to the bottom of the glass is called “precipitation.”
Dissolved Solids — As previously discussed, makeup (continued)
water is continually added to replace water lost to evapora tion. All makeup water has some level of dissolved solids. When the water evaporates, the existing dissolved solids remain behind in the system.
When more makeup is added, you get more solids, in creasing the concentration of dissolved solids. Continue that process and you rapidly build up more dissolved sol ids. Left unmanaged, they will ultimately cause scaling.
It is essential to maintain low levels of dissolved solids in the cooling tower system water. We do this by checking the “conductivity” of the water with an inexpensive device called a “conductivity meter.”
The more dissolved solids in the water, the higher the conductivity. The concentration of dissolved solids is controlled by bleeding small amounts of water out of the storage tank. The more water we bleed, the lower the con ductivity and the lower the dissolved solids.
Suspended Solids — As the water travels through the tower, it comes in contact with large volumes of outside air. The air is not always clean. Dirt from the air can mix with the water but not dissolve. These are called “suspended solids.” Over time, the concentration of suspended solids can increase. Since the cooling water is being circulated through several expensive coils in the DCMs, some of the suspended solids can cause fouling, causing slow flow.
This is not a good thing for the operation of the DCMs. Suspended solids can be managed by bleed-off and by draining and cleaning the cooling tower system one to two
times a year.
Bacteria — Bio-growth is generally a re sult of suspended solid infiltration in the form of spores and/or other airborne growth. In city areas, grime, dirt and roofing materials can all contribute to the growth of bacteria in the cooling water.
The water you use to fill the cooling tower system and the water you use as makeup contains various forms of bacteria in low concentrations. Most dry cleaners shut off the tower when the drycleaning operations are complete.
In addition, most dry cleaners do not clean on one or two days per week and on holidays. Wet surfaces, heat, air contamination, and suspended and dissolved solids can all contribute to the growth of bacteria. The bacteria buildup looks like a wet, dark green slime or mold.
Excessive bacteria buildup is a double threat: it can plug up the sprinkler arms, pip ing, and storage tank, interfering with water flow; and it can become airborne, leaving the tower with the drift which can result in health issues for people who are exposed to that air.
Bacteria can be controlled by both proper cleaning/ bleed-off, and by treating the water with chemicals designed for cooling tower water.
The manufacturers of these chemicals have repre sentatives who can help the dry cleaner with the proper treatment. If the tower system is treated with a biocide, employees or contractors should wear recommended per sonal protection equipment (PPE) when working on the tower. In some areas of the U.S., special certifications are required to handle biocides.
pH — Another result from airborne contamination is the acidification of the cooling tower system water. This is caused by acid rain and/or the incursion of nearby stack emissions containing sulfur-based soot.
This material pushes system water pH to the acid side. Without adequate chemical treatment (corrosion inhibitors), the acidic water will corrode the metal surfaces where the water is circulated.
Some dry cleaners simply add liquid chlorine bleach to kill the bacteria. Liquid chlorine will kill the bacteria, but maintaining a high concentration of chlorine can raise the alkalinity of the water, causing the copper coils in the DCMs to corrode faster than normal.
The best solution is to maintain a neutral pH of 7.0, a balanced level of biocide to kill the bacteria, an anticorrosion additive, and a low level of chlorides.
Many owners might say, “I’m not a chemist. How can I check the water?”
The answer is, dry cleaners are chemists! Dry clean ers have to maintain their solvent quality, mix and match laundry additives for various wetcleaning operations, and use a variety of chemicals on the spotting boards.
Operators with cooling tower systems check their water pH and chlorine levels with swimming pool strips. They have inexpensive meters that they use to measure conductivity.
In addition, two to four times a year, they take a sample of their tower water to a nearby lab to check their water quality. Recommended lab tests are for total bacteria and Legionella. (Oh no! A lab test! Once you learn to do it, it becomes just another thing to maintain your equipment.)
All of this may sound overwhelming, but it’s not! Owners use the proper levels of chemical additives to clean and disinfect their towers once or twice a year. They keep an eye on the tower operation, and they maintain their equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
These operators are rewarded with 20-30 years of economical service from their cooling tower systems. ADC
This is the conclusion of a two-part special feature on cooling towers for dry cleaners. Part 1 appeared in the June issue.

Never was there a “yarn spun” so soft and smooth as this one about to be spun. Silk, it is. From the silkworm.
The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin (an insoluble protein) and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons, Wikipedia ex plains. The shim mering ap pearance of silk is due to
the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fiber, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, producing different colors.
Silk fabric was first developed in ancient China. The earliest example of silk fabric is from 3630 B.C., and was used as wrapping for the body of a child from a Yangshao culture site. Originally reserved for the emper ors of China for their own use, silks were also sent as gifts.
Silk has a long history in India, too. Wild silk threads from native silk worm species existed in South Asia during the time of the Indus Valley civilization dating to 2450 B.C.
King James I introduced silkgrowing to the American colonies around 1619.
Here’s how silk comes to be, again courtesy of Wikipedia: “Silk moths
lay eggs on specially prepared paper. The eggs hatch and the caterpillars (silkworms) are fed fresh mulberry leaves. After about 35 days and four moltings, the caterpillars are 10,000 times heavier than when hatched and are ready to begin spinning a cocoon.
“A straw frame is placed over the tray of caterpillars; each caterpil lar begins spinning a cocoon. Two glands produce liquid silk and force it through openings in the head called spinnerets. Liquid silk is coated in ser icin, a water-soluble protective gum, and solidifies on contact with the air.
“Within two to three days, a cat erpillar spins about one mile of fila ment and is completely encased in a cocoon.”
That should be all you need. You can now be silky-smooth in your knowledge of silk. ADC
Do you want to take part, or know someone who does?Rinse, a growing national brand in drycleaning and laun dry delivery, has raised $14 million in Series B financing led by Partech Ventures, the company reports.
The new funding follows a strong year for the San Fran cisco company which has seen double-digit month-overmonth revenue growth since its launch in 2013, it writes.
Rinse says the funding will be used to fuel expansion to several new markets, including Chicago, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Austin, Seattle, Miami, San Diego, Denver, and New York.
“Rinse is on a mission to be the first and largest na tional brand in clothing care,” says Ajay Prakash, cofounder and CEO.
“We’ve worked hard to build a phenomenal team which is dedicated to providing our customers with the most convenient and high-quality way to get their dry cleaning and laundry done,” he says.
“We’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished to date and are excited to work with Partech as we more than triple the number of markets we serve.”
In the four years since Rinse’s launch, the firm re ports it has demonstrated rapid growth, best-in-class customer retention, and steady margin expansion at a time when the consumer “on-demand” market has not been kind to start-ups.
The company indicates it has continued to thrive with its focus on high-quality and “smart scheduling” that works with customers’ naturally recurring needs for dry cleaning and laundry.
“We’re excited to bring our market expansion play book to new cities with this funding,” says Prakash. “Washington, D.C., has grown even faster than Los Angeles and San Francisco, proving that the technology and processes we have developed to support the large volume we are seeing in more mature markets will transfer immediately to new cities.”
As part of the financing, Nicolas El Baze from Partech Ventures has joined the Rinse board of direc tors.
Rinse’s funding also includes existing investors Jav elin Ventures, Arena Ventures, Accelerator Ventures, and Structure Capital, which brings its total raised to nearly $24 million, it adds.
Rinse pickup and delivery service is available nightly from 8 to 10 p.m., the company notes, scheduled thru its SMS, website, or mobile app. The firm just raised $14 million for expansion. (Photo: Rinse)
Senza Rivali has established its first “Atelier di Moda” (fashion shop) in partnership with Todd Layne Cleaners’ East 77th Street (NYC) location, offering Tailored men’s suits, shirts and sport coats, and Bespoke shoes.
“The custom shoe sample on display is also turning a few heads, with its multiple colors and interesting de sign,” says owner Todd L. Ofsink.
Bespoke shoes and boots are custom-made for each client. “We were surprised by the number of millennials that are intrigued with our display and asking questions,” he adds.
A client and a creator design a shoe or boot together using a design tool which allows for up to 45 individual customizations down to the stitching color on different parts of the shoe.
The owner recently announced the launch of his firm’s sales and marketing alliance with the Italian company and its “Bespoke” line of fabrics for garments handmade in Florence.
Its “Tailored” line offers a proper fit, with alterations done precisely, and little details such as buttonhole stitching are done as ordered, the cleaner explains.
“The partnership is working out pretty well so far,” he relates. “It definitely expands our service offerings and we have obtained several new customers for our ecofriendly drycleaning service.”
“Our alliance with Senza Rivali will offer a unique product line and keep our business relevant for our cus tomers in the years to come,” he says.
“We’re always looking to expand our services and make our customers’ lives easier,” adds Ofsink, who has owned Todd Layne Cleaners since 2006.

“Lon brings years of both financial and manufacturing experience to the organization, which will be beneficial during the company’s growth phase,” says Greg Watson, company CFO.

Wearable USA is one of the nine, and is a conference and exhibition focusing on wearable technologies, ap plications, and their commercialization progress, notes show management.
The speaker program is carefully crafted, according to show analysts. The overall two-day combined exhibition will have over 250 speakers, with 50 speakers specifi cally covering wearable technology.
With over 3,500 attendees expected under one roof, show organizers say, “Attendees and exhibitors will have access to all co-located events. All these value chains are brought together enabling technologies that will shape the future of wearable devices.”
At the show, organizers point out, there will be “a series of synergistic events on wearables, printed elec tronics, sensors, IoT (Internet of Things), 3D printing, graphene and 2D materials, energy storage, electric ve hicles and energy harvesting.”
In other news from ID TechEx, Stretchable Electronics 2017-2027 is a report available that gives a “critical as sessment of all the technologies, including stretch sensors; ink-, yarn-, or wire-based stretchable interconnects.”
Feigenbaum Cleaners, one of the oldest drycleaning businesses in New York state, is celebrating its centen nial anniversary, the company reports. It was founded in Glens Falls, N.Y., in 1917 by Herman Feigenbaum and his wife Jennie, both immigrants from Austria-Hungary.
They met and married in New York City in 1909. Todd Feigenbaum, the third-generation owner explains, “After working as a tailor for years in the crowded gar ment factories of New York’s Lower East Side, Herman decided to leave New York City to purchase a tailor shop in Whitehall, N.Y.
“On their way to Whitehall, the family of five decided to spend a night in Glens Falls, a small city 50 miles north of Albany. After exploring the community and falling in love with its charm, they decided Glens Falls would be their new home.”
Over the past 30 years, the business has grown to open stores in Saratoga Springs, Wilton and Queensbury, N.Y.
About celebrations this year, owner Todd Feigenbaum says: “We’ve had some great coverage in some local papers. We’re doing a monthly drawing for a $100 gift certificate each month of the year. We already had a din ner for our staff, vendors, service techs and friends of the company.” ADC

GENERAL MANAGER-DENVER
Retired owner seeks new GM for retiring GM position in a dry cleaning/laundry plant in Denver. Business involves 50% retail and 50% route operations. Opportunity for ownership. Send resumes to Jeddinco@aol.com
10 YEARS AGO. Eight out of nine (88.9%) dry cleaners say they will follow advice the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) issued in July in its solvent white paper — that operators “first consider” alternatives to perc when shopping for new machinery — according to the most recent survey appearing in the Wire. Asked to list all systems they plan to investigate before making a purchase decision, two-thirds (66.7%) of those considering alternatives chose high-flashpoint hydrocarbons. While not considered a stand-alone process, wet cleaning came in second on dry cleaners’ wish lists with 44%.
35 YEARS AGO. A new type of woman was unveiled at the IFI convention in Reno. The “balanced woman,” a new type of drycleaning customer discovered by the IFI’s recent marketing survey, was described by staff members at the convention in late July. The event drew 1,004 registrants. The balanced woman, it was said, combines work and family responsibilities, is very dependent on the dry cleaner, and is more reasonable than her predecessors, the traditional housewife and the “career woman”. …
The Neighborhood Cleaners Assn. is starting a series of free meetings this fall in response to many dry cleaners’ requests for a continuing program on counter training. A series of slides with a professional soundtrack at the meetings will help to show and tell: How to make customers glad they came to the store — the little extras that please people and make them more pleasant to deal with.
50 YEARS AGO. He knew that the equipment in his plant was versatile, but he didn’t realize just how versatile until recently, reports a drycleaning owner in Newark, N.J. “During the recent rioting in Newark,” he says, “our loyal employee worked a night shift, as well as a day shift, in an effort to keep looters off our premises. We found that our Draper-Form, combined with an inexpensive air mattress, makes an excellent bed.” He has admonished the president of a local garment finishing equipment company not to sell this double virtue as an “extra feature” and raise the price on his next unit. …More on unionization: Last month, we passed along some of the things you are permitted
to tell your employees about unions — before unionization. Now, courtesy of the Bulletin, published by the North Carolina Assn. of Cleaners and Launderers, we’ll list the things you cannot do or say in connection with unionization. You or your representatives must avoid saying anything that can be interpreted as a threat, promise of a benefit or use language which might be coercive. For example: Management cannot threaten employees with the loss of their jobs; cannot question employees about their union activities; and cannot spy on union activities, just to name a few.

75 YEARS AGO. Bicycle Built for Two (Purposes). You can usually depend on Yankee ingenuity to find a way. When the Office of Defense Transportation (ODT) ordered a drastic reduction in truck mileage and elimination of specials and call-backs, many cleaners soon devised new emergency methods of delivery. One of the many methods is the handy bicycle delivery outfit of Elwyn’s Cleaners, Sparta, Ill., shown in the photograph. Used mostly for special deliveries, the attractive bicycle unit also creates favorable publicity. Thanks for the photograph goes to Chas. M. Van Dyne, vice president of American Disinfecting Co.

When you’re looking for a boiler to fill your steam or hot water needs watch out for a “Big Foot.”That’s right! Big Foot is lurking out there, but not at Parker Boiler. Parker Boil er makes a line of small watertube boilers designed specifically for reduced floor space Even though the square footage that a “Big Foot”boiler may occupy is sometimes less; when consideration is given to manufacturer’s required clearance for maintenance and service, the Parker Boiler footprint will consume significantly less floor space. When a power burner is installed on the top of a vertical boiler, at least 11 feet of clearance may be required for removal and service of the burner and pressure vessel. We don’t know how many buildings have 11 feet of clear space above the boiler, but we do know that Parker Boilers require much less space than the “Big Foot” recommended clearance*. That adds plenty of room for your feed system, air compressor, chemical feeder, water softener, and air vacuum. So if you need a dependable, quality boiler, foruse in smaller spaces, just call your local Parker Boiler representative today.
