Here are some of the individual responses to this recent Your Views survey request: “Tell us about your latest drycleaning and/or wetcleaning machine purchase, and how it’s working out for you.”

• “We are 100% wet cleaning. I removed my old machine a year ago.”

• “Two machines purchased in 2000, still running like the day they were installed.”

• “Replaced a 20-year-old machine. Now using less solvent and chemicals.”

• “Heated hydrocarbon.”

• “Drycleaning machine and wetcleaning machine. Does the job.”

• “Just purchased a new washer and a steam dryer, both designed for fine, cleanable items.”

• “Eight-year-old machine, works great.”

• “Drycleaning machine from 1999!”

• “Wet cleaning!”

• “Wetcleaning washer and dryer. Love them.”

• “I have all brand-new equipment.”

• “Bought a used system.”

• “My cleaning system giving good results so far, four months in use.”

When asked, “How many drycleaning and/or wetcleaning machines do you have? And why that ratio?” the trade audience responds this way:

• “Six DC machines, two wetcleaning, seven washers.”

• “One DC, one WC.”

• “One and one.”

• “Dry cleaning five, wet cleaning four.”

• “One each. Enough to handle volume.”

• “Two DC, two WC.”

• “1/1. Appropriate.”

Another question: “How much pride do you have in your ‘cleaning machines’ at your drycleaning operation?” Fifty-four percent of respondents say their machines are back-of-the-house workhorses, while 35% say they are in plain sight of the customer (full results are in chart).

About conducting regular machine maintenance, most respondents answer either “daily” or “weekly,” with a few saying “monthly” or “as needed.”

Lastly, survey respondents talk about the comments they received from customers who have noticed their dry-

cleaning or wetcleaning machines:

• “Noticed occasionally.”

• “No.” (Several respondents say this.)

• “Wow!!! That is a beautiful machine. Looks really sophisticated.”

• “Out of sight.” (Editor’s note: I’m thinking they mean “not in view” but they could mean “outta sight,” as in “very cool!”)

• “On guided tours, we make a point of talking about all cleaning technologies, including the oldest cleaning technology, wet cleaning!”

• “Yes, the machines are a topic of discussion.”

• “No, they don’t. Rarely does anyone inquire.”

• “No, they are not in sight. If someone is interested, I will take them on a tour.”

• “Sometimes. Then I explain the difference from home washing.”

Paul White, a veteran textile care expert, purchased the business from his father 30 years ago. Since then, he’s witnessed major industry changes; among them the emergence of wet cleaning and its potential in today’s society. “We wanted our business name to represent who we are and what we do,” said White. “We provide ‘Garment Care to fit your Lifestyle’.”

Spurred by enthusiasm to grow wet cleaning revenue, White outfitted a section of the new plant with a mix of Poseidon Textile Care Systems® (Poseidon) softmount wet cleaning machines and dryers. “The technology for wet cleaning has improved so much, we could operate without a dry cleaning machine,” said White. “We always do what we think is professionally best for each garment.”

Lifestyle Garment Care now processes 80 percent of all incoming garments using the Poseidon wet cleaning machines; the remaining 20 percent is dry cleaned. Programmability makes it possible to wet clean everything from silks, wools and cashmeres to cottons, linens and synthetics.

just load, select a program number and press start. Chemicals are automatically injected, according to White. Items move from wet cleaning into the Poseidon Dryer, and finally, to finishing. The dryer features moisture-sensing technology, drum-rotation control and timed reversing to safely dry virtually any item type, including gowns, coats, dresses and sweaters. “Items come out of the dryer soft and wrinkle free with just enough moisture that the presser doesn’t have to do much with it,” said White. This saves time and energy over traditional dry cleaning. “We can wet clean, dry and finish a suit in one hour,” said White. “Poseidon allows us to wet clean challenging garments like wool suits and wedding gowns without worry. It allows me complete control over my equipment and my destiny.”

Amped about the future, White will soon debut Lifestyle Laundry Care — an offshoot of Lifestyle Garment Care — that caters to area residents looking for wash/dry/fold

services, pickup and delivery.

Operating out of the same location, Lifestyle Laundry Care wash/dry/fold will complement White’s already booming garment care/dry cleaning business, which is the largest in the Great Lakes Bay region. In doing so, Lifestyle Laundry Care will further harness the potential of the company’s Poseidon wet cleaning equipment.

American Drycleaner is turning up the volume on communicating to the dry cleaning industry with its inaugural podcast, avail able for listening at https:// americandrycleaner.com.

With the launch of its first-ever podcast in midJanuary, the friendly magazine that has been serving fab ricare since 1934 now has a new way to provide fabricare content to drycleaning owners.

“These American Drycleaner podcasts will be another communications channel for busy owners and operators to get fabricare industry information, and do it while driv ing in their car or listening at work or home,” says Charles Thompson, publisher of American Drycleaner and owner of parent company American Trade Magazines LLC.

In this first podcast, listeners can hear the story of how Raleigh, N.C.-based Brothers Cleaners rebuilt its plant after a critical fire two years ago that all but destroyed the business. It’s the powerful first-person tale of determina tion and hope, told by co-owner Bob Hilker.

“The very first American Drycleaner podcast is all about the 2018 Plant Design Awards (PDA) winner tell ing his story of how his plant rose again after a devas tating fire. Listeners will find it gripping, and there are lessons to be learned as well,” Thompson says.

This podcast, and others to follow throughout the year, hosted by Editor Tim Burke, will offer an easy way for owners to listen to conversations about what’s happening in their drycleaning world right now — and also share these podcasts with family, friends, colleagues, vendors and suppliers.

Podcasts such as this first one about the PDA grand prize winner give busy drycleaning owners a convenient way to hear opinions from peers and experts about topics directly related to their fabricare business.

Other American Drycleaner podcasts in the works now will bring varied and timely topics to continue serving busy drycleaning owners and operators.

“We think our podcasts will catch on with the readers of American Drycleaner. We want our audience to hear the voices of their peers and experts telling it like it is. We think they’ll hear another side of the stories we print in the magazine,” he says.

Cancun Can-Can

Brainstorming and Five Star Conference, Cancun, Mexico

Cancun fun, call it the Cancun Can-Can, at Secrets Capri Riviera resort, went on every night.

The National Cleaners Association (NCA) and Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) co-hosted the Brainstorming and Five Star Conference here Jan. 11-14.

Attendees enjoyed a fiesta of lights playing on palm trees accompanied by music and singing — and plenty of dancing and laughter filling up the warm tropical evenings.

Organizers set out to create a relaxing “getaway” setting for social networking for a hundred or so fabricare industry professionals.

Mission achieved.

Also on the agenda were three motivational speakers, one each morning, to give attendees in this tropical mindset some management ideas they could take back home with them — stuffed in their suitcases full of memories from this classy, cleanas-a-whistle boutique resort set on the edge of the white sand beaches and the azure blue of the Gulf of Mexico.

“Start everything with attitude,” speaker Deena Ebbert, aka the “propeller girl” (because she’s always moving), told attendees the first morning. Her energy was infectious.

She had attendees write descriptions of their “attitudes” on stickers and attach them to various parts of their body: chest, wrist, arm, etc.

Audience members got interactive quickly and played along. Some of the attitudes shown off included “Chill,” “Curious,” and one person even had “New Jersey.”

Ebbert threw stuffed fish into the crowd to exemplify the Pike Place Fish Company in Seattle, which stands out from the crowd, she noted, by having fun, throwing real fish, and engaging people who come to watch.

Having fun serving the customers was the point. A great attitude was the key. Attendees laughed and learned a lesson about how vital fun really is.

“Loved her,” one drycleaning owner shared. “Now how do I get my own employees having that much fun? I’m going back to ask them. We’ll do it together.”

The second day’s speaker, Joseph Grenny, talked about critical conversations and about being candid and respectful, and noted: “If you don’t talk it out, you will act it out.”

Many nodded their heads in agreeance and came out saying they liked his messages of: safety to speak up, truth, and coming from love.

On the final morning, speaker Brian Rashid asked the fabricare

audience how many used digital marketing? All hands went up. Then he asked how many were reaching people through Facebook and Instagram? Most hands went down.

“Old school is just getting clicks,” he says. “New school is highly focused marketing, making contacts through Facebook and making deals with ‘influencers’ to reach people with relevance to your business.”

Lots of pens writing notes. Show organizers nodded in approval. A third day of great information for attendees.

“Your Facebook post doesn’t have to be fancy, just connect locally.”

Several attendees said the resort was “more personal-feeling” with nice little subtle touches, from handdrawn designs in the sand, to turning down the beds and adding cute messages in flower blossoms. Attendees could often be seen smiling, sharing stories with friends, and having a great time.

Like Ebbert indicated, they were “throwing fish” ... having fun!

Oh, yeah, and the large turtle grotto in the lobby, holding dozens of small turtles, had everyone acting like a kid again, trying to feed them.

For fabricare industry attendees, the 2018 Can-Can in Cancun was a turtle-loving hit!

I n memoriam: Milton Chortkoff, Milt & E die’s

Milton Chortkoff, 88, Burbank, Calif., died on Dec. 28, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

Starting in the drycleaning business at age 17, and still running the highly success ful Milt & Edie’s Drycleaners more than 70 years later, Chort koff was an industry icon, recently presented the Diamond Achieve ment Award by the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI).

“Milt epitomized the spir it of generosity and was known throughout Burbank, Toluca Lake and North Hollywood for support ing the communities, the schools, the arts, and pets,” his published obituary notes.

“Living life with no regrets and a sharp sense of humor, Milt left a heartfelt impression on everyone he met with his robust desire to make our world a better and happier place. Filled with love and all that is good in the world, he will be a shining star in the heavens burning brightly forever,” it adds.

Surviving him are his wife, Edythe; his brother, Burt; his children, Beth and Ben; and five grandsons. Funeral services were Dec. 31 at Eden Memorial Park, Mission Hills, Calif. Contributions in Chortkoff’s memory may be made to the City of Hope national medical center.

Clearent acquires SP OT

Clearent, a St. Louis-based payments solution provider, has completed its purchase of Draper, Utah-based SPOT Business Systems LLC, an independent software vendor (ISV) serving customers in the drycleaning industry, Clearent reports.

Details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

“We are excited to name SPOT as the first acquisi tion in our new division, Clearent Software Holdings,” says Dan Geraty, CEO and founder.

“As a market leader servicing the drycleaning indus

try with an excellent history of customer service and retention, SPOT will help us realize our vision: to be a highly recommended payments solution provider in the industry,” he adds.

SPOT’s day-to-day operations remain unchanged, and all current SPOT employees will retain their posi tions after the sale.

“We’ve considered acquisition offers from a num ber of potential buyers over the years, but we believe that joining the Clearent team is the best way to take the business solutions we’ve created at SPOT to the next level,” says Mark Jones, director of operations for SPOT.

Clearent notes it has more than 300 employees, 45,000 merchants, and $14 billion in processing volume.

I n memoriam: E verett A. Bergmann Jr.

Everett A. Bergmann Jr., of Berg mann’s Cleaning and Laundry, died peacefully on Dec. 7, 2017, in Front Royal, Va., surrounded by his family. He was 86.

Bergmann was born in Wash ington, D.C., Aug. 20, 1931. The son of Everett A. and Anna Mae Bergmann, he graduated from Fish burne Military School and Benja min Franklin University and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was married to Carole Ruth Murtaugh on Nov. 26, 1955. Bergmann spent his career working for the fam ily business, Bergmann’s Cleaning and Laundry of the Washington, D.C., area, which just celebrated its centen nial in July.

After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and contin ued supporting and working in the family business. He loved the business but his family was his joy.

Bergmann is survived by nine children; 31 grandchil dren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 15 in Front Royal. Memorial donations can be made to the Adler Center for Caring, Aldie, Va.
