Step Up To The Bar! (Bar-Coding)

When asked in this first quarter of 2019 American Drycleaner Your Views survey to tell us: “Do you use bar-coding at your drycleaning operation?” 55% responded “Yes,” and 45% “No.”

The survey then asks: “If you don’t use bar-coding, how do you check-in/track items?”

Respondents answer:

• “Software and printed tags.”

• “We will be switching to bar-coding this year.”

• “Strip tags.”

• “Paper tags.”

The survey also asks: “If you do use bar-coding, explain how it works at your store?”

Respondents explain:

• “Heat-seal most all clothing.”

• “Scan the bar-code on the item to create the invoice.

If the item does not have a bar-code, we create one that identifies the type of item, color, and brand.”

• “Each item has a specific bar-code where we add: color, manufacturer, damages, or any issue, and so on.”

• “Via our POS software, we mark the garment in and our conveyor system tracks when the items are ready.”

• “We use it to indicate the order is complete and racked, also for inventory control.”

• “All items receive a bar-code upon arrival. This allows us to track each item all the way through the cleaning process. It’s a real game-changer.”

The survey then asks: “If you use bar-coding, are your employees all trained on using your bar-coding system?” 76% say “Yes.” While 24% say “No/NA.”

“What are your customers’ reactions to bar-coding?” the survey also asks. “Love it for the fast drop-off,” 24% reply. “Like it, but don’t really understand or care,” 12% relate. “Have no idea and that’s fine,” 44% note. “Have absolutely no opinion,” 20% say. (See graphic.)

Finally the survey asks: “For those who have it, why does bar-coding at your store make such a big difference?”

Respondents share: • “Able to process more in less time with less mistakes.”

• “It’s an awesome time-saver, much better for tracking assembly and history of items.”

• “We have designated markers trained, and that’s what they do all day long.”

• “Consistent pricing, accuracy of customer garment, plant processing, customer ID.”

• “Makes inventory much easier.”

• “Quick check-in.”

• “Allows us to assemble faster and more efficiently. Also gives us the opportunity to expand with technology as it gets better, faster, stronger.”

• “Faster and more precise mark-in process. No mistakes in the assembly process. It’s also great to have a history of each garment.”

PERFECT CLEANERS WETCLEANS FOR GREATER PROFIT

Since the installation of new Poseidon Textile Care System Wetcleaning Machines and Dryers, Perfect Cleaners, in Detroit, has tripled processing throughput, lowered utility costs, and realized an 8 percent increase in sales volume. Owner Gary Heflin, a dry cleaner of 28 years, has transformed his business from predominately dry cleaning to mostly wetcleaning. Wetcleaning, he maintains, is a more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and productive way to process garments of all types and fabrics.

Boosting Productivity to Make Room for More Accounts

“The Poseidon system allowed us to significantly improve productivity so I could seek out new accounts,” said Heflin. “Wetcleaning is so much better and faster than dry cleaning. It uses less water and natural gas and we can wetclean pretty much anything, including suits, uniforms, overcoats, wools, silks and wedding gowns.”

Choosing Poseidon

Perfect Cleaners worked with Jeff Quail and Mike “Stucky” Szczotka, of Eagle Star Equipment, in Troy, Mich., to select, install and program its new Poseidon wetcleaning equipment, including two 40- and four 90-pound capacity soft-mount wetcleaning machines, and four 85-pound capacity dryers. The highly programmable Poseidon system offers flexibility and ease-of-use. The wetcleaning machines are set up with 18 different programs for specific item types, including gowns, comforters, napkins, darks, spa sheets, chef coats, shirts, and more. “Soaps and conditioners are automatically injected,” said Heflin, “and one wetcleaning machine has steam injection for cleaning chef and lab coats. This eliminates prescrubbing labor and time,” he said. “The quality is excellent and my customers have

noticed a positive change.” Operators simply enter a program number, load the wetcleaning machine and press start. The machine automatically does the rest by combining the right chemicals, water temperatures, water levels, mechanical action, g-force, baths and cycle times.

The Poseidon Dryers, which are engineered to safely and quickly dry wetcleaned items with no shrinkage, according to Quail, offer moisturesensing technology, onthe-fly adjustments and a flexible control. “They program the dryers to fit the wetcleaning machines by item type,” said Heflin. “We have no problems with shrinkage, items come out slightly damp, and finish work takes less time. As soon as the dryer stops, we lay out the garments, which are finished and pressed in 15 percent less time. Before we had the Poseidon Dryers, we had to hangdry casino drapes. Now they are quickly dried in the Poseidon Dryer, which greatly improves our production,” said Heflin.

While it takes 60 minutes to dry clean one load, it takes just 35-40 minutes to wetclean and dry the same size load, according to Heflin. “This allows us to finish our work a couple of hours sooner in the day and turn off the boiler, which saves a ton of money on gas and labor.”

Perfect Cleaners, which did very little wetcleaning before, now wetcleans 60 percent of incoming items. Heflin expects that number to grow. “I really wish I had the machines years ago.

T.A.G. tours Flair in L.A.

Tuchman Advisory Group (T.A.G.), reports it, “Held an extremely successful meeting on November 7-9, 2018, hosted by Gary Futterman and Drew Singer of Flair Cleaners in Los Angeles, Calif.”

Highlights, T.A.G. notes, included a tour and critique of several Flair Cleaner locations; presentations from each member; and discussion about the industry.

A featured speaker at this meeting, the group notes, included Bruce Frankel with Eckhoff Wealth Management, LLC., who discussed his book, The 7 Biggest Financial Mistakes Made by Successful Entrepreneurs.

The group also says: “We were pleased to welcome Ben and Mary Combs of Judi’s Cleaners in Sacramento, Calif., and Grant Carson of Martinizing in Alameda, Calif., as new members of T.A.G. at this meeting.”

LD Supply Company, a drycleaning distributor, reports it has acquired Royaltone Dry Cleaning, a manufacturer of cleaning products and detergents.

All About The Experience

“Your customer’s experience is your brand,” notes speaker John DiJulius (above), a hit with attendees at this year’s conference, co-hosted by NCA and DLI.

Carpe momento! It means sieze the moment ... and give your customer the experience of a lifetime.

That very idea seemd to be the theme for fun and reconnecting at this fabricare getaway on a sunkissed island in the Caribbean.

“It’s your job to be ‘unbelievable’ and inspire your team,” speaker John DiJulius told about 100 fabricare attendees at the recent Brainstorming With The 5 Stars Conference, co-hosted by the National Cleaners Association and the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute at the boutique Sonesta Resort on St. Maarten.

Turquoise and lapis-lazuli gulf stream waters and blue skies greeted attendees every morning as they made the short walk from the resort to the ballroom to hear speakers.

DiJulius predicted a “roller-coaster ride for business in 2019,” and insisted that training and hiring will both be critical to having world-class service.

He walked among the group telling an attentive fabricare audience that,

Describing the market today, he suddenly exhorts: “Millennials crush it!” Attendees are fully engaged; everyone is smiling and laughing.

“The currency of millennials is ‘purpose.’ They are not buying big items,” he says. “They are out for the experience, like travel.”

DiJulius says, “Don’t compete in price wars, compete in experience,” and in particular, something he terms the “micro-experience,” which can be rapport, recognition, and the tiny personal nuances of relationships.

Other speakers included Jeff Tippett on tapping into your own “superpower” to help others around you win. Arthur Greeno, owner of ChikFil-A asked attendees on the last morning, “Do you have raving fans?” (Supporters of your brand who rave about your business?)

Greeno says: Give your employees the tools to serve customers, in whatever way that looks like. It can

be simple, like balloons, freebies, and just the positive language your team uses, but always have what he calls a My Pleasure attitude of making sure your employees are of the mindset to be happy to help their guests.

Other attendees mentioned the phrases: “insightful” and “getting back to the personal side of life.”

Owners Gary and Carol Greenholt of Palms Drycleaners in Hanover, Pa., first-timers to this conference, seemed to enjoy the soothing ocean setting, the sharing of industry ideas, and the variety of speakers.

DiJulius concluded with: “You are how you treat each other.” And added, “Think ‘U R X,’ meaning U R the Experience.”

There was no doubt that this 2019 Brainstorming conference was for sure the experience!

“You are in the customer perception business. Teach your employees to understand customers.”

10 YEARS AGO. A cold holiday season greeted retailers with worse-thanexpected sales. Retail sales fell 2.7% in December, and November sales figures were revised downward from -1.8% to -2.1%. For all of 2008, retail sales declined 0.1%, mostly due to a record 3.1% decrease in motor vehicles and parts.

Wal-Mart’s same-store sales rose 1.7% in December, falling short of an expected 2.8% increase in sales for the month.

35 YEARS AGO. The Senate version (S.757) of the hazardous waste bill that passed the House last November is expected to go to the floor for a vote about the last week of February. Industry representatives have been contacting Senators and their staffs in search of a sponsor of draft amendments that would make compliance more reasonable for dry cleaners. IFI and other groups have late news and action recommendations for those who would like to support this final effort.

50 YEARS AGO. Before hiring, check references! That advice is underscored by the Neighborhood Cleaners Assn. Through the pages of its NCA Bulletin. Seems that a midtown Manhattan dry cleaner learned the hard way. He hired a man who claimed to have experience. He did. But he also had experience in thievery. Eventually, the cleaner did phone to check on the employee

— after the employee had done his dirty work and had “taken off.” Sure enough, this other dry cleaner had had the same sad experience with this same bad apple. The moral of this story is obvious and simple: Despite your desperate need of the moment, check references — even if you want to hire first and check later. If the references don’t check out after a prospect has been employed, then you can decide on the appropriate action to take.

75 YEARS AGO. Protection for Hands!

A new drycleaning plant, operated by the Quartermaster Corps, U.S. Army Service Forces, opened at Camp Blanding, Fla., on January 3. When completely installed it was expected to handle the cleaning and pressing needs of 20,000 men per week, and thus, “relieve the over-worked civilian drycleaning plants of northern Florida.” ADC
