Clean Show opens Housing Bureau for 2015 event

ATLANTA — Attendees to next year’s Clean Show here can now make lodging reservations via the trade show’s Housing Bureau, reports show manager Riddle & Associates.

Clean Show organizers have published a list of 12 downtown Atlanta hotels that are offering “special discounted rates;” a check shows they range from $149 to $199 nightly during the April 16-19 event.

“Show management has contracted with all of the official hotels so we may offer Clean 2015 exhibitors and attendees quality hotel-room options at a great price,” says Riddle & Associates.

The show’s five sponsoring trade associations have selected “headquarter” hotels that will be primarily occupied by attendees and exhibitors from their specific segment of the industry.

The Omni Hotel at CNN Center will serve as the headquarter hotel to the Textile Care Allied Trades Association (TCATA) and the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA). The Association for Linen Management’s (ALM) headquarter hotel will be the Sheraton Atlanta.

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. — On the surface, the term “succession planning” seems pretty clearcut: it’s a plan for finding tomorrow’s leaders to take the place of current ones running a business. But if you adopt an approach that narrow, you’re missing the larger opportunity, according to Paul Fayad, managing partner at Positive Leader LLC. Fayad addressed the topic during a presentation at the Association for Linen Management’s annual educational conference in June.

Fayad explains that succession planning is much more than simply replacing personnel.

“Succession planning is finding a replacement for everything that we do,” he says. “We have to look at our organizations, our departments, and then we look at our individuals. It’s a strategic process that has to take place, more than anything else.”

For example, years ago, as technology changed the way offices operated, early adopters of new equipment and processes found themselves in a better position than those who didn’t embrace change. It’s this kind of strategic foresight, Fayad says, that helps companies continue to succeed.

SUCCESSION PLANNING

Fayad lists three essential phases for those who want to undertake a more thorough approach to succession management and planning. The first phase involves aligning strategic goals with the company’s human resources. To do this, operators need to sit down with their entire team and develop a clear vision for the future—specifically, where they think the business will be in three to five years.

“Some people say, ‘Well, I run a laundry. How many changes are going to take place?’ Well, you answer that question,” Fayad says.

The event draws hundreds of executives, owner/operators and management from textile services companies serving various sectors, according to the association. The conference programs aim to pro-

vide expert views on strategies and tactics to help companies improve their bottom line.

Keynote speakers will discuss economic/technological trends and leadership/management concepts, and panel discussions aim to fuel “productivity and profitability,” according to TRSA. The event also provides many networking opportunities and social events, including a welcome reception, a TRSA Political Action Committee (TRSAPAC) VIP reception and the

“Look at the changes in the machinery and the way production is done in a laundry operation today compared to 20 years ago, or compared to 10 years ago.”

Managers should also concentrate resources on the critical positions within the organization, according to Fayad, who adds that positions may need to be created for the future and efforts put toward filling them.

sion planning should not focus on maintenance, but growth.

“Stability in business is done,” Fayad says. “You will either grow or you will shrink. There is no plateau anymore.”

The second essential phase for succession planning involves a thorough investigation of the current positions in the business, and discovery of whether they fit the vision created by the team. Are the right people in the right positions? Are they capable of becoming the right people in those positions? Developing potential successors means focusing on acquiring talent for the long term, according to Fayad.

Timely corporate-knowledge transfer should also be a goal, which means operators should be tracking corporate, organizational and department information to serve as a reference for future leadership.

“Hand that info over to the people of the future so they don’t make the same mistakes,” Fayad advises. “That transparency is so

critical in succession.”

A concentrated effort toward hiring and talent development is the basis of the third phase, during which operators should be sure that anyone brought on board meets the needs of the organization, for the future even more than today. Employees will only succeed if leadership acknowledges its role in making that happen.

“You have a responsibility for the people who work for you and the potential people who work for you to make their dreams come true,” Fayad says.

Choosing the right training materials and tools is a big part of securing the desired level of success. Operators need to make sure the materials match the goals of the organization, Fayad says.

BUILDING THE RIGHT TEAM

When it comes to identifying the best possible team members, Fayad suggests a number of approaches. He says operators should do a “gap analysis” to figure out what is needed for tomorrow and what is missing today in terms of staff and their abilities.

“It’s also about changing machinery, changing the way you

do things, regulations, federal regulations, [and] all of the things that take place,” he says of gap analyses.

Finding the right people can be hard, Fayad warns, if you’re not aware of the difference between behavior and personality. He explains that much of an individual’s personality is inherent and therefore cannot be modified, just like physical attributes. Behavior, on the other hand, is task-driven and can be modified. Only testing and assessments can help operators distinguish employees with the right personalities.

Monitoring development and achievement of staff members is crucial, too. Having a system in place to keep track of progress will help operators have a better sense of who potential future leaders are. And any business short on potential leaders should not be hesitant to look elsewhere for them.

“In a lot of organizations, in order to make change occur, you have to bring in new people.” Fayad says. “You don’t have a choice.”

But Fayad has a specific approach for moving toward change and also retaining good existing staff—one that does not

rely on a “change or you’re gone” attitude toward personnel. Going back to phase three of essential succession planning, he advises operators to involve current staff in ideas and plans for the future, giving them some ownership and making sure they know they’re part of the company’s plan.

Other approaches to readying staff for their future roles involve creating specific job assignments, coaching and mentoring, and having employees shadow different positions. Fayad suggests having leadership take stock of their own positions, too, since the inner workings of a role may not be so obvious to observers.

No matter which approaches you adopt, always keep in mind that succession planning has less to do with replacing certain individuals and more to do with an overall approach to handling the changes that are coming in the future, Fayad says.

“What you have to understand is that this process of succession is so much more than me retiring, or you retiring, or someone else doing something,” says Fayad. “It is the success of your organization for the future.”

UniMac updates equipment look, extends

RIPON, Wis. — UniMac has given its cabinet hardmount washerextractors and tumble dryers a “facelift” for a more consistent look, plus unveiled newly redesigned hardmount washer-extractors during a mid-July Media Day at its headquarters here (the announcements were embargoed until mid-August).

The new aesthetics mean that cabinet hardmount washer-extractors and dryers (both stack and single pocket) now come standard with gray two-toned control panel overlays, plus carry a new metal nameplate with the UniMac logo in gray.

The washer-extractors are now equipped with a gray door handle with a roll pin/cam lock system to ensure smooth opening and closing. A redesigned stationary door handle comes standard on single-pocket and stack dryers. UniMac tumble dryers are now available in gray, in addition to white, for all capacities. Also, the dryer is updated with a gray lint door and gray kickplate.

“We now have a premium, more uniform look across our line of washer-extractors and dryers—both stack and single pocket,” says Bill Brooks, UniMac’s national sales manager. “We have extended the same modern industrial appearance and sleek design to our laundry equipment to continue to differentiate our products from others in the marketplace. The new aesthetics provide OPL managers with a more updated,

sophisticated look for their laundry operations.”

Regarding its hardmount washer-extractors, the design of UniMac’s UW45 and 65 models has been extended to complete the series and meet the demand for larger capacities, the brand reports.

The UniLinc Control System featuring data/performance-indicator monitoring is available on all larger-capacity models, as is the brand’s industry-exclusive OPTispray™ spray rinse technology.

The new equipment features a narrower frame and smaller footprint than previous models, which means they can easily fit into tight spaces and through narrow doorways, UniMac says. The machines can also be used on the same concrete pads as older models. The redesigned UW Series also features capacity 5 to 10 pounds greater than older UW models.

The larger machines are equipped with “cutting-edge technologies” that maximize throughput and save more on utility costs than ever before, Brooks says.

Flow racks: Blessing or curse?

I have spent the last 20 or so years writing a monthly column for various trade publications. Recently, I have fielded a number of questions about flow racks and whether their use in laundries is a good idea. I first wrote a column about flow racks 10 years ago, so I decided to revisit it and have made some minor updates. I hope you find it interesting and useful.

Of all the equipment that a manager can purchase for his laundry, I believe that the flow rack receives the most hype. In theory, it is an unbeatable piece of equipment that provides a sure-fire way to ensure that linen moves through the storage system on a “first-in, firstout” basis. I have seen many laundries purchase them because the potential benefits for these items are so high, though it’s been my experience that the theory does not hold up in practice.

My first concern is that the inventory system is violated the minute that more than one row of the flow rack is used for an item. It is normal that large-volume items take up more than one row at a time, so then it becomes almost impossible to maintain a first-in, first-out system. Instead, one or two rows at the most convenient height are used most frequently while the other rows, normally the bottom and the top, get little usage. And the linen on these shelves will become covered with lint that settles out of the air.

In theory, the trays, aided by gravity, flow easily from one end of the rack to the other. In practice, this does not happen often. The wheels that the trays run on can become damaged or filled with lint, creating excessive friction. Also, when trays are filled to maximum capacity, linens from parallel rows can touch and create a roadblock that prevents the linen from making it to the other end of the flow rack.

Employees quickly adjust to the latter by finding long-handled poles with hooks on the end so they can reach up into the flow rack and pull the trays down. Occasionally a tray will get pulled too much to one side or the other, causing it to fall off the track and discharge its contents onto the row below.

Then an employee has to crawl into the flow rack area and remove the logjam created by the fallen tray. This can be difficult because several rows of linen will need to be emptied before that can be done.

I have also found it is difficult to keep a flow rack clean. It accumulates lint underneath, in the rollers, on the bottom row of linen and on the very top row of linen. To really clean it properly, all the linen needs to be taken off the unit on a regular basis. Because it is not easy to climb inside, its cleaning simply does not get done as often as it should.

I have had the opportunity to work with flow racks in my last three laundries, and I diligently tried to make them work. I actively put the theory to the test. In Milwaukee, we had a flow rack 100 feet wide by 20 feet long. We operated a large exchange cart system out of the laundry. I worked there more than eight years and by the time that I left, there wasn’t a single piece of flow rack still in use. The major reasons for removing it from that laundry were the need to better utilize the floor space, its cleanliness, and the need to reduce staff.

In Alabama, where I worked for almost five years, we tried to use the flow rack for about a year before giving up. That laundry was based on bulk deliveries, and it made little sense to put the linen on a flow rack and then into a bulk cart instead of just putting it into a cart. In my Roanoke, Va., plant, we just took down two-thirds of the flow rack after trying to use it effectively for 18 months.

The flow rack simply does not live up to its theory in practice. I have found that it simply becomes an obstacle to smooth production and good laundry management. ALN
