BDT Capital Partners to acquire majority stake in Alliance Laundry Systems
RIPON, Wis. — Private equity firm BDT Capital Partners LLC has agreed to acquire a majority interest in Alliance Laundry Systems from Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, according to Alliance. Completion of the deal is expected in the third quarter; additional terms were not disclosed.
“Our management team will hold a significant ownership stake following the transaction and is excited by the new partnership with BDT,” says Mike Schoeb, Alliance’s president and CEO.
“Our long-term capital will provide a solid foundation and long runway to continue to pursue exciting growth opportunities around the world,” says Chip Dunn, managing director at BDT.
Alliance Laundry Systems designs, manufactures and markets commercial laundry equipment under the brand names Speed Queen®, UniMac®, Huebsch® and IPSO®, among others.
Teachers’ Private Capital, the private equity group of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, acquired Alliance in January 2005. The group is expected to retain a minority interest in Alliance following the completion of the transaction, according to the company.
Missouri laundry provides meaningful employment to disabled residents
BY MATT POE, EDITOR
BRANSON, Mo. — Sheltered workshop Tantone Industries supports local businesses in this area while giving meaningful employment to adults with disabilities.
The business offers a variety of services, including recycling, shredding, mail courier deliveries, a thrift store and more. However, laundry duty is considered the coveted job among employees.
Tonya Moore has been at Tantone Industries for more than seven years, and she appreciates the opportunity the laundry side of the business provides for her.
Moore’s favorite part of working in the laundry? “Making sure the laundry gets done and the companies to have it back on time when they need it,” she says.
But for Moore, it isn’t just about getting the laundry done for the customers; it’s also about doing the job well. The most difficult part for her is folding the processed laundry just right.
“It needs to be put in the right
order and folded nicely in a bag,” she says.
And it’s important for the linens to be processed well, because the laundry serves a variety of businesses in the resort town, according to Tom Goodmanson, inter-
im general manager of Tantone Industries.
He says its laundry services resorts, hotels, area camps and some medical offices. The workshop also offers laundry service to the community for larger items
such as comforters, area rugs and sleeping bags.
Laundry industry reps fighting proposed CLEAN Act
A proposed bill called the CLEAN Act seeks to have local large-scale laundry facilities licensed by the City’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
BY MATT POE, EDITOR
NEW YORK CITY — Textile care association representatives and laundry operators have been meeting with New York City Council members in recent weeks in order to make proposed licensing legislation less onerous on the industry.
“We are having a constructive dialogue with [Council Member Ritchie Torres] and with other members of the Council to try to get to a common-sense outcome,” says David Potack, president, Unitex Textile Rental Services, which offers healthcare uniform and linen services throughout Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.
“The CLEAN Act has growing support within the City Council
and among consumers, businesses, residents, and workers in the city. We aren’t going to comment on internal deliberations about this
legislation, but we will confirm that the bill is moving forward,” a spokesperson for Torres says. “The CLEAN Act will create commonsense standards of cleanliness that all industrial laundries must follow.”
Torres (D-Bronx) introduced the bill, called the CLEAN Act, or Intro. 697, in February in response to allegations of unsanitary laundry practices within the city.
The legislation would require any commercial laundry that operates within New York’s five boroughs, or delivers to the five

NYC legislation would require industrial laundry licensing, inspections
CHICAGO — When it comes to choosing the best textiles for their business, respondents to August’s American Laundry News Your Views survey are overwhelmingly looking for three things: price, quality and durability.
When asked what’s more important when choosing textile products, each answer (purchase price, quality [cost per use] and durability) was selected by 5.7% of respondents. However, nearly three-quarters of those who answered say that all three criteria are important.
Almost 45% of managers and operators who took the survey say that their business processes a mix of customer-owned goods and rental textiles. Slightly more than 35% of respondents process “virtually all customerowned goods,” while 20.6% handle “virtually all rental textiles.”
Choosing the textiles a laundry processes is an important part of the process, since almost 86% of respondents (or one of their staff members) play a role in the selection. Less than 15% don’t play a part in choosing textiles.
In making that choice, according to several managers who took the survey, it is important for laundries to keep their customers in mind, along with prices.
“[The selection] depends on the need of the customer and also trying to keep costs down,” a respondent writes.
Another writes, “We don’t purchase cheap or alternative goods. We use major brands and try to duplicate what the customer was using prior to our involvement … unless the linen selection had been an issue. Our philosophy is that linen should be invisible. There are other things for the customer to think about.”
Still, respondents want to be sure the initial price and costs associated with the selected textiles are reasonable in the long run.
“Cost per use is important in our selection,” writes a respondent. “This includes processing cost and replacement cost spread over the number of washings.”
One factor that has influenced textile purchases for some launderers is material prices. As one respondent puts it, “Price always impacts a laundry’s operation.”
“Aside from labor costs, textile purchasing costs are our second biggest cost driver,” adds another. “The spike in textile costs from five years ago had an adverse effect on our operating costs, but it has leveled off since then.”
Other ways those who took the survey noted that material prices have affected operations include a reduction in pounds processed and a lower profit margin—“It’s difficult to pass on these increases to the customer.”
However, another respondent isn’t seeing adverse effects from material prices. “Reductions in processing costs have offset any material price increases. Along with a longer service life of products, costs have also been flat over the past two years.”
The end result for one respondent is: “Everything we do is to get the most life out of our linens by proper washing, finishing and purchasing. We stick to our guns even if the price goes up.”
While the Your Views survey presents a snapshot of readers’ viewpoints at a particular moment, it should not be considered scientific. Due to rounding, percentages may not total 100%.
Subscribers to American Laundry News e-mails are invited to take the industry survey anonymously online each month. All managers and administrators of institutional/OPL, cooperative, commercial and industrial laundries are encouraged to participate, as a greater number of responses will help to better define operator opinions and identify industry trends.

Arrow Linen first purchased their three Milnor CBW® tunnels two decades ago to replace conventional washer-extractors in their original laundry located in Brooklyn, NY. Since then, Arrow’s business grew to warrant a second laundry. In 2013, Arrow expanded operations–and raised their roof 11 feet! Arrow could have chosen any manufacturer to equip their new washroom, but they knew that would get longevity, durability, and accountability with Milnor.
Arrow’s customers’ restaurant linen requires frequent color and soil change formulas, but the quality is not compromised. Corporate Engineer Frank Park boasted the tunnels “have increased our workload over 40% without increasing energy, water, or labor costs we experienced when we converted the conventional washers to CBW® tunnels over 20 years ago. The major improvements from the CBW® to PBW™ are far superior washing capability with only 50% water consumption.”

boroughs, to get a two-year laundry license from the DCA. The department would be responsible for setting cleanliness standards for laundries, along with conducting inspections.
“Through smart licensing and regulation, the CLEAN Act will create a level playing field in the industry while protecting public health. This vital legislation will benefit everyone who stays at New York City’s hotels, eats at its restaurants, and seeks care at its healthcare facilities,” a spokesperson for Torres says.
Kevin Schwalb, vice president of Government Relations, Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA), says that as introduced, the legislation presents several areas of concern.
“Once the legislation was introduced, we needed to get involved,” says Schwalb. “As it stands right now, we oppose the bill. We don’t want it changed, we want it gone.
He says the legislation includes hotel on-premises laundries (OPL) but excludes hospital OPLs. In addition, the licensing structure would be per truck operated by a laundry, not per business.
“The licensing is another cost [laundries] have to absorb, and this whole cleanliness standards, trying to get DCA [to] regulate the industry, that’s the interesting aspect,” says Schwalb. “DCA said [at the hearing], ‘We are in no position to do this. We can’t establish standards. This is out of our purview.’”
But Schwalb admits that the bill probably isn’t going to go away. He and other industry representatives have been in contact with Torres and other city council members, and testified at a June 18 hearing.
“We’ve been in contact with their office and they’ve said, ‘We’re not doing anything on it right now. We’ll work with you,’” says Schwalb. “We do not feel that it’s imminent, but we do feel it’s going to happen. Mr. Torres looked at us in the meeting and said, ‘I’m not going to not do this bill.’ This bill is going to get passed one way

or the other.”
Schwalb says that he is in the process of rewriting the bill to go after the “bad actors” in the industry and not penalize others.
“We recognize there may be some bad actors in our industry. If anything happens, it should happen to the bad actors,” he says. “You don’t need to kill a fly with a nuclear bomb, basically.”
Another concern about New York’s CLEAN Act that is driving cooperation between the industry and the city is that the legislation could have an impact across the country.
“Could it be adopted by other municipalities? It certainly could be,” says Potack. “That’s why if something does pass, it needs to be done in a way that is thoughtful and doesn’t penalize good actors that are already following the rules and simply just trade assessment of costs that either businesses have to pass on to customers or businesses just absorb if they don’t have the ability to pass it on to customers.
“It’s certainly worrisome that costs are going up in so many different areas, and this is just another added cost of doing business.” ALN
CHAPTER 6 (B):
Washroom formulas (continued)
This month, I will continue on the topic of wash formulas, writing specifically about reusable barrier surgical linen and incontinent pads. The new-generation surgical linen poses a special challenge for laundry managers.
It is lightweight and 100% polyester. It is often soiled with mineral oil or body fat from various surgical procedures. The wrappers often have autoclave tape still attached to them when they arrive in the laundry.
Reusable surgical linen and isolation gowns are best processed through a conventional washer-extractor rather than through a tunnel washer. This preference is based on the unique wash formula I have developed to process these items.
Determining the proper load size for the new barrier surgical linen is important. As such, I find it extremely helpful if the conventional washer has a window as part of its front door. It is also important to get good mechanical action while washing the surgical linen.
The difference between underloading the washer and overloading it can be as little as 5 pounds of product. Underloading will result in the linen floating on top of the water, with little mechanical action. Overloading will prevent the surgical linen from tumbling in the washer and, in extreme cases, may prevent water and chemicals from getting to the center of the load. As a general rule, the goods should be loaded to between 70% and 75% of the rated capacity of the washer.
The focus of washing this new polyester surgical linen is to remember that less is more. High amounts of alkalinity—measured in parts per million— will damage the linen and shorten its life. The No. 1 challenge is to effectively remove oils and body fats from the fabric without using a traditional surgical wash program. I have found that following this “less is more” philosophy has helped my laundry to fully embrace this new fabric and make its use cost-effective.
A two-minute rinse at the start of the formula helps remove loose soil and wet down the fabric. This is followed by a break with very little alkali and a reasonable amount of a solvent-based detergent; the latter helps remove the oils, fats and residual autoclave tape. This is followed by a series of rinses and an intermediate extract. (You should not use bleach or softener on this type of fabric. Softener will leave oily looking spots.) A final rinse utilizes a little bit of sour and a product designed to rejuvenate the barrier of the fabric.
Incontinent pads also are a special challenge. By the very nature of the product, the bioburden on the pads can be awfully high. The length of time it takes for the used pad to arrive in the laundry can also add to the challenge of effectively washing this product. Proper load size is again a critical element in washing, because effective mechanical action is a key to getting a clean, odor-free product.
An additional challenge with incontinent pads is the frequent placement of EEG/EKG stickers on the pads. The highly aggressive adhesive on the back of those patches will not come off during a normal processing cycle. I recommend the use of a solvent-based detergent to help remove the stickers from the pad during washing. As with the reusable surgical linen, no softener should be used on the pads, as doing so will greatly reduce a pad’s ability to absorb water. A high concentration of bleach (I recommend hydrogen peroxide) will help remove any odors from the pads.
Next month, I will finish up this section by analyzing barrier retreatment products.

approximately 80,000 pounds of laundry annually. That keeps employees moving, with a lot of sorting, washing, drying and folding.
“During the summertime here, we go from 8 o’clock in the morning to 9 o’clock at night. That’s Monday through Friday,” Goodmanson says. “We have a Saturday shift as well, 8 to 3.”
“It lets me keep on my feet at all times,” says Kameo Atkinson, who has worked at Tantone Industries for more than three years. “It keeps me busy.”
It keeps Goodmanson busy, as well. He started at Tantone Industries more than three years ago, working in building construction and maintenance. Then after six months, he was moved into a supervisor staff and truck driver position.
Earlier this summer, the general manager left the company. Based on Goodmanson’s background in warehouse management in Minnesota, Executive Director Max Lytle asked him to serve as the interim general manager.
“I manage 47 employees with disabilities, and seven staff supervisors,” says Goodmanson. “I manage all of the departments and the Thrift Store, and I coordinate the employees that are needed in each department, and the hours of operation.
“This is by far the most intricate job I have ever had. This is also the most spiritually rewarding job I could ever imagine.”
Goodmanson says the laundry does both pickup and delivery, which he also has to coordinate. Some of Tantone Industries’ smaller customers bring in their own laundry, drop it off and then come back to pick it up.
“We have two box trucks, and we also have a pickup truck that we had to get a custom topper for so that we could deliver laundry in it, as well,” he says.
RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB
At 50 cents per pound, the service is fast, convenient and saves Branson-area businesses money on labor hours. All laundry is folded and bagged, as noted by Moore.
And Tantone Industries uses equipment that makes its laundry operations efficient and easy, according to Goodmanson.
“We have three Maytag washers and dryers, commercials, obviously,” he says. “We have some folding tables. That’s our equipment.”
Tantone Industries used funds from a U.S.
Department of Agriculture grant to get its laundry service equipment up-to-date with Maytag Commercial Laundry single- and multi-load washers and dryers.
The equipment the workshop uses includes three Maytag Commercial Laundry Soft-Mount Washers, one Maytag Commercial Laundry Top-Load SingleLoad Washer and three Maytag Commercial Laundry Energy Advantage™ Multi-Load Dryers. Each has a capacity of 65 pounds, according to Goodmanson.
John Morris Equipment Co., the area’s Maytag Commercial Laundry distributor, helped the workshop choose the right equipment for its needs.
The chemicals, supplied and monitored by Ecolab, are fed directly into the machines, which feature pre-set buttons for towels, sheets, bedspreads, and food and beverage laundry. This means employees can wash a load of laundry with a simple press of a button.
All the employees who are trained to do laundry want to be stationed in the laundry room, says Goodmanson. He suspects the laundry is a coveted job in part because the equipment is easy to manage.
In the winter, which is this tourist town’s off-season, they have to take turns working the laundry shift because there is less work to go around.
LABOR OF LOVE
Not to be undersold, of course, is the fact that laundry duty provides ample opportunity for employees to enjoy one another’s company as they fold load after load, according to Goodmanson.
“It’s this social outlet that perhaps employees like best about laundry service and their jobs as a whole,” he says. “We provide employment for people who otherwise may not be able to find work. This organization enhances the lives of employees because it is more than a job. It’s also a social life. Our employees make friends here.”
Atkinson can testify to the friendly nature of the business. She had worked in laundries at hotels in the Branson area before coming to Tantone Industries, but they didn’t compare to her current job.
“I like doing laundry here better,” she says. “It’s a little bit bigger, so I’m not by myself most of the time.”
The laundry is vital to Tantone Industries keeping its doors open for employees and its customers, according to Goodmanson.
The laundry is the most profitable part of the workshop, he says. Through the recycling business, the workshop is able to employ a lot of people, but it loses a lot of money on recycle. He says that the laundry business
allows Tantone Industries to be able to employ all the people by doing recycling with the money that it makes.
“The laundry is very important to us, to keeping our doors open,” Goodmanson says.
He believes Tantone Industries is as good for employees as it is for area businesses. He says that the organization has been at work for more than 35 years in Branson and the Taney County area and is looking forward to serving the community for many more. ALN

By adding a second GI tunnel system and moving equipment from two buildings into one, Rone enjoys streamlined production. The new plant – with its arsenal of high-performance equipment – opens the floodgates to new business, ensures backup in case of a mechanical failure, and allows Rone to launch a new linen rental program.
Since moving to the new plant and installing its second tunnel, another ironing line and additional open-pocket washers, Laundry Plus has boosted pounds of laundry per operator hour (PPOH) by 15-18 percent.

Applied Silver Inc. is launching SilvaClean®, described as a state-of-theart silver treatment for textiles.
SilvaClean® is a water-based ionic silver treatment that provides protection to laundered healthcare textiles, the company says. SilvaClean®—applied using the equipment shown—works on a wide range of fabric items by imparting lasting antimicrobial properties to the items each time they are laundered, protecting them in transport, storage and use, according to Applied Silver. These items include, but are not limited to, patient bedding, gowns, bath towels, healthcare scrubs and privacy curtains.
The company says that hospitals have invested significantly in reducing the potential of infection through products and processes designed to minimize risk from reusable devices, hands, water, air and hard surfaces. Until now, soft surfaces have been largely absent from standard hospital infection prevention programs. Studies show that reducing the level of bacterial contamination on textiles, especially those
InvoTech Systems has launched a new RFID Pool Towel Tracking System, which is a module of the InvoTech Linen System. The company says its Pool Towel Tracking System reduces lost-towel expenses.
The Pool Towel module, says InvoTech, automatically records the transaction when towels are issued to hotel guests, and the system interfaces with the hotel’s property management system to charge the guests when towels are not returned.
InvoTech provides Linen and Uniform Management Systems that integrate RFID technology designed to increase profitability for hotels, resorts and casino operators.
Moonsoft International Inc. reports it has added a scrubbing strip to the headband of its Microfiber Tube Mop in order to extend the life of the product.
When the company introduced its Microfiber Tube Mop to the jan-san and textile rental markets, the product was met with some resistance. However, after a time, the market began to appreciate it.
Then, Moonsoft received complaints that the headband was wearing. The company got damaged mops back and researched the problem, which it found wasn’t present in only the Microfiber Tube

SilvaClean® continually reduces the level of microbial contamination on textiles and is capable of reducing 99.9% of odor- and stain-causing bacteria, which provides a better patient and healthcare environment, Applied Silver says.
Applied Silver patented the process, which is installed at the laundry service provider. The use of SilvaClean® requires no additional training or change in linen inventory at the hospital level, according to the company. To ensure quality control, Applied Silver offers the SilvaSure™ field test kit to confirm the presence of silver on treated linens.
Applied Silver says that its process has been approved by, and registered with, the Environmental Protection Agency on both federal and state levels. www.silvaclean.com 888-939-4747
The company says that many properties are upgrading operations with its RFID Portable Handheld Reader with InvoTech Mobile Software. The company says the wireless Handheld Reader instantly reads, identifies and processes physical inventories of uniforms and linens in carts and on racks. The Reader also saves hours of labor by providing an accurate total article count for large linen storerooms in seconds, according to the company.

Mop but string mops, too. When cleaning the floor, a janitor sometimes used the edge of the headband to give an extra scrub to loosen dirt, which is something the tube or string mops were not designed to do, the company says. Moonsoft discovered that if it added a scrubbing strip of material to the edge of the headband, it extended mop life. It also gave the janitor the ability to scrub stubborn debris.

from each load—reducing dry time by up to 50%. In doing so, the company says they improve laundry productivity and cut water, natural gas and electricity usage.
The new 60-pound model replaces its 55-pound-capacity predecessor with several improvements. Continental says the new washer offers more productivity with a 14% increase in G-force; larger basket capacity; simplified installation and maintenance; and the same compact footprint. It also features Inteli Control, which the company says allows complete control of every conditional aspect of the wash process.
Additionally, a new SmartLoad feature automatically tells operators when the washer is loaded to 25%, 50% or 100% capacity, the company says.

High-volume spreader-feeder optimizes capacity per operator hour
The JENSEN Jenfeed Express is a high-volume cornerless spreader-feeder developed for fast feeding of sheets, and most bath and thermal blankets for the healthcare sector, with special focus on optimizing capacity per operator hour in a small footprint, according to the company.
JENSEN says it introduced the cornerless feeding principle in 1994, and that it doubles the productivity per operator hour compared to clamp feeding. The company says the design creates a built-in buffer for multiple pieces, allowing new pieces to be fed into
the inlet stations while others are in a transfer position, reducing the machine cycle time.
The Jenfeed Express is available in a one-, two- or three-station design. www.jensen-group.com 850-271-5959

InkGo® Is Now Odor Free!
InkGo has been reformulated to remove its odor… and to improve its performance.
InkGo is still the environmentally friendly,* safe way to remove ink stains from all types of fabric. It’s still great at removing autoclave tape and adhesives. And since it’s odor-free, InkGo is more pleasant to work with.
Does odor really matter? As more drycleaners position themselves as good environmental stewards, keeping chemical odors in the plant to a minimum can help them differentiate from their competition. And odor-free is a real plus if you’re working on ink for an extended period of time.
Now that’s worth noticing!

SHEA review lists optimal infection-prevention strategies for processing of healthcare textiles
NEW YORK — Proper laundering and handling are important in achieving and maintaining the hygienically clean quality of healthcare fabrics and textiles delivered to the point of care, according to a new review that highlights evidence-based strategies to inhibit potentially serious contamination.
The review, based on findings and recommendations from peer-reviewed studies, as well as current standards and guidelines, is published online in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).
“We asked the question if current industrial laundry processes are sufficient to interrupt patient-to-patient transmission via clean healthcare textiles (HCT). The evidence we examined suggests this is indeed the case; we found no evidence of microbial carryover from one patient to the next for patient-care textiles when proper textile management and laundering specifications were used,” says Lynne Sehulster, Ph.D., an infectious disease epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and lead author of the review.
Outbreaks of infectious disease associated with laundered HCT are rare, according to the review: only 12 such outbreaks have been reported worldwide in the past four decades. For those outbreaks, analyses have identified the cause to be inadvertent exposure of clean HCTs to environmental contamination, including exposure to dust in storage areas or a process failure during laundering.
Current infection prevention strategies for laundering and handling HCT appear to be adequate in preventing healthcare-associated infections, provided that every step is taken to maintain the hygienic quality of HCTs prior to use, according to Sehulster.
She notes, however, that if an outbreak linked to HCT occurs, it is not enough to conduct microbial sampling of laundered textiles and declare the laundry process to be the source of the problem. Each of the distinct operations of the laundry-handling process needs to be evaluated in order to pinpoint the root of the problem.
“Our review was limited to clean HCT from laundries. We did not address contamination that occurs while
the HCT are in use. That’s a topic for future study,” says Sehulster.
Recommendations in the review on optimal infectionprevention strategies used during the laundering process of HCT include:
• Adherence to Standard Precautions (gown and gloves) and minimal textile agitation when handling contaminated laundry in isolation rooms are considered sufficient to prevent the dispersal of potentially infectious aerosols.
• Offsite laundries should carefully package or cover clean-textile bundles prior to transport to prevent inadvertent contamination from dust and dirt during loading and unloading.
• Laundered HCT must be stored in a manner to keep them dry and free from soil contamination.
• If alterations occur in water temperature, agitation, chemical type and concentration, and duration of laundering cycle, the addition of a disinfecting laundry chemical can compensate for the anticipated loss of antimicrobial effectiveness of the overall process.
• Laundry additives, such as hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid and acetic acid, can provide extra disinfection options for short wash cycles of HCT or for those laundry situations in which chlorine bleach is not indicated.
• Industrial laundering offers more control of the process and can be tailored to adequately disinfect HCT with more choices of detergent and laundry additives compared to home laundering.
• The importance of temperature, relative humidity and moisture control in storage areas is central to preventing microbial proliferation in and on materials that have some organic components.
As new technology and treatments (such as antimicrobial treatments of healthcare textiles) emerge, Sehulster recommends further research on the development of laundry processing in addition to current operations.
“Studies are needed to demonstrate an impact on healthcare-associated infection incidence and increased patient safety in a cost-effective manner,” she says. ALN
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — July was a busy month for the Textile Rental Services Association’s (TRSA) Hygienically Clean Advisory Board, which oversees the association’s Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification process. Four textile services facilities were certified during the period.
Crothall Laundry Services in Belcamp, Md.; Hassler Textile Services, Connersville, Ind.; Metro Linen, McKinney, Texas; and United Linen Services-New England in Lawrence, Mass., all received Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification.
The added certifications bring the total number of facilities in compliance with the designation’s protocols for quality assurance (QA) to 56, TRSA notes. The first certification was awarded 2½ years ago.
Receiving the Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification hinges on laundries’ QA efforts to ensure best management practices (BMPs) are
documented and followed for the production of hygienically clean textiles, says TRSA. These practices encompass applicable infection control guidelines, including those established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as recommended practices from The Joint Commission (TJC [formerly JCAHO]) relevant to the handling and processing of healthcare textiles. Bacteriological testing verifies these practices’ effectiveness.
When TRSA inspects facilities seeking the designation, the association says it is looking for QA documentation and other evidence that BMPs in the following categories are implemented:
• Plant Facilities: including functional separation of soiled and clean areas, equipment maintenance and calibration
• Housekeeping: use, cleaning
and care of equipment; cleaning of carts, work surfaces and workstations; selection, measurement and proper use of cleaning supplies; cleaning schedule

many of whom were drawn from TRSA’s membership due to their industry knowledge and expertise.
• Laundry Process: soiled-linen handling, washing and drying procedures, transportation, delivery
Microbial testing verifies processes achieve the necessary outcome of laundered product hygiene. In addition to passing
After qualifying, facilities must then pass regularly scheduled testing to maintain the certification. Protocols include the Replicate Organism Detection and Counting (RODAC) quarterly for total microbial content and United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 62 semi-annually for specific microorganisms.
The Hygienically Clean Advisory Board consists of professionals encompassing the full spectrum of healthcare laundry, including commercial launderers, nurses, doctors, chemical manufacturers and research scientists,
“The [Hygienically Clean Certification] Program is technically sound and would be a good first step in assuring continued quality control in commercial laundries,” notes Kellogg J. Schwab, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, and director of JHU’s Water Institute.
Schwab was consulted to confirm the certification’s testing protocols are significant and appropriate, says TRSA.
Nearly 40 more laundry facilities are working to clear the initial thresholds of the Hygienically Clean Healthcare certification, according to the association, with 13 of them having passed the microbial testing requirements and awaiting inspection of their laundries.

PANEL OF EXPERTS
The ‘tech’ of textiles
erly handle the product; stacking issues; movement along the conveyor issues; packing; final product look; rewash; acquisition; productivity; and respecting the product.
Innovation is the culture at Standard Textile, and high-tech fabrics have been a large part of the customer service we have put forth to the marketplace. Our concept of high-tech fabrics that offer higherlevel performance and having the lowest cost per use is a fundamental principal.
From high-tech barrier fabrics for surgical procedures introduced in the ’80s to high-tech fabrics designed for better skin care and debuted recently, we have always worked to offer products that are designed for specific purposes, but understanding that they still have to function well in the laundries we serve.
Having been an operator for more than 30 years, my first thought regarding the challenges high-tech fabrics present has been “attitude.” In the past, I have had to check my attitude and open myself up to being receptive to the product being shared with me. It is so easy to quickly think about why a product won’t work and how it will inconvenience my facility.
The inconvenience could include the following: multiple formulas for washers and dryers; essential temperature controls for washing and drying; retraining employees; learning how to prop-
Quite frankly, I see similar consideration needs regarding operating traditional laundries using predominately steam, laundries using thermal oil or laundries that are considered steamless. In all cases, textiles are treated/handled differently.
A great example of the perceived inconvenience factor lies in the creation of synthetic barrier isolation gowns. While they definitely perform, from the laundry side, they are hard to fold, they are lightweight and can get sucked up between the dryer frame and basket, and you have to process them long enough to dry the synthetic knitted cuff yet not burn or damage the synthetic fabric.
Initially, they were viewed as a higher-cost inconvenience. Yet, they have become the new standard, and the laundries that have successfully managed this change have offered their customers better protection, more comfort, a green alternative to disposables and added revenue to their bottom line.
It comes down to the consideration of the “good” that various products do for our customers’ facilities and, eventually, the patient.
In the end, the laundries should have a “holistic” approach in the name of service to the customer. It might mean acquisition cost is higher, a change to current laundry process, and that the customer is
the beneficiary of the savings and the quality gain.
From a laundry standpoint, if we can present better products and save customers hundreds of thousands of dollars over time, I am doing it!
The laundry industry is constantly evolving, even more so today.
Laundries worldwide are facing ever-increasing pressure resulting from increasing energy and labor costs, hygienic guidelines and requirements, marketplace pricing pressures, as well as the everincreasing requirement to process the newer, “high-tech” textiles and the challenges they present.
Each capital equipment manufacturer’s designers are busy addressing each of these issues with the latest generations of tunnel washing “system” equipment. I will focus on some of the features and benefits offered to address the challenges of washing, extraction and drying these “high-tech” textiles that aid owner/operators in their processing of these fabrics.
Tunnel washers on the market today offer many upgraded technologies to provide an optimal wash environment and allow the chemical provider partner’s products to ensure optimal, hygienically
“‘High-tech’ seems to be the current buzzword when it comes to textiles, from healthcare facilities to industrial settings. What specific challenges do these ‘high-tech’ textiles present to the average laundry, and how can they best meet them?”
clean washing and rinsing results.
Tunnels can be programmed to control the mechanical action by providing varying speeds of the drum’s rotation and angle for proper bath penetration within the fibers of each fabric type.
The individual chambers of a tunnel washer can now be regulated to the actual batch weight and classification in that individual module, ensuring consistent, proper ratios of wash liquors, chemicals and steam to the real textile’s weight for that load, not the nominal loading weight for all batches. Even the perforation on drum walls within many machines has been improved to be gentler on these new textiles.
Equipment manufacturers today are all looking to minimize water usage in tunnel washers, while at the same time striving to ensure optimization of the rinsing process. Otherwise, the potential water savings realized can be detrimental to rinse quality while also causing potential problems in the finishing department.
The latest technologies of many modern tunnel washers provide for a gradual cool-down of select fabric to help minimize “thermal shock” before transferring goods from the final hot-wash-zone chamber to the first rinsing chamber within the tunnel.
Many machines also provide drainage of “free” wash liquors and residues at this same transition point so that only “absorbed” liquors and chemicals left in the fabric transfer to the rinse zone of the machine. Improvements have been made in multiple tunnels as
well as with more effective lintand hair-filtration systems.
Process optimization of today’s high-tech fabrics carries on to manufacturers’ extraction units as well, both presses and centrifuge models. Each strives to ensure safe extraction to all linen types by optimizing extraction times and providing varying pressing programs for each classification— from several light tamps to maximum time under full pressure, depending on the fabric type.
When wearable items with buttons, snaps and zippers, or other specialty fabrics, are involved, it may be determined that one of the many centrifuge-spinning extraction units available today may be best for the application.
Equipment manufacturers’ designers have also met the challenge to process today’s high-tech textiles in the latest generation of system dryers. All strive to optimize and balance the drying process between performance, efficiency and linen care.
To meet the linen care aspect of this goal, many dryers offer features to provide even airflow distribution throughout the width of the drum for optimal, even contact on each fabric type surface. Many dryers also can be equipped with an infrared system that monitors the surface temperature of a fabric to help eliminate over-drying that can cause damage and reduce the useful life of these fabrics.
Please be assured that many new machine technologies exist that assist in the streamlined and profitable processing of these materials and products.

ew synthetic fabrics present problems in multiple ways.
Microfiber products and new athletic fabrics tend to hold oily stains tightly. New high-threadcount linens and stretchy fabrics hold soil mechanically within the fibers. Dyes applied to newer synthetic materials are more sensitive to heat, alkalinity and bleaches. Some fabrics can absolutely not use bleach.
The list goes on and on. New commercial cooking oils, sunscreens, skin care products and everything else may be improving, but they can present new problems for processing textiles they contact.
Of course, there isn’t a single solution to all these problems. Different materials, construction of the fabrics, new oils and lotions, etc., can be dealt with, but not in the same way. And, with efforts to reduce energy, lower temperatures compound these problems.
First, read the material label. If possible, contact the fabric manufacturer for its wash recommendations. Forward these recommendations to your chemical supplier and discuss solutions with its representative. Always try its recommendations first.
Second, if you still have problems, experiment with the detergent. Newer oils and fabrics respond well to specific surfactants. All detergents have different blends and ratios of surfactants. Some contain varying amounts, and different types, of solvents. Most companies have a wide variety of detergents for different applications. Send soiled samples of new fabrics to your chemical supplier’s lab for testing. Many times, a different detergent will make a huge difference.
Third, realize that changes in the wash formula will be needed. Some synthetics respond well to a high-alkali flush at the beginning of the load. Other goods need longer wash times at certain temperatures. More heat, if the material can tolerate it, increases chemical activity and helps remove oils and soil. Again, read the fabric manufacturer’s recommendations, but don’t be afraid of trying things outside their guidelines.
Many problems with stains and soiled areas can be minimized with proper pre-spotting. Try to keep stains from setting. Test your prespotting products on newer fabrics for compatibility and effectiveness. Again, consult with your chemical supplier for specific recommendations.
Lastly, with any goods, but especially those from healthcare operations, realize that as many fabrics restrict bleach and temperature,
As processing pertains to “hightech” linens, we are not overly involved in the various segments of the laundry industry that utilize those new materials. With our
specialty being hospitality linens and laundry, our challenges pertain more to the fact that most hotels are making an effort to upgrade their bedding and bath package.
As many hotels are going to California king-sized beds, that obviously necessitates the need for larger sheets as well as duvets and duvet covers. These larger items will no longer fit through a standard 120-inch-wide ironing line without folding. Most all flatwork ironer manufacturers market a 130-inch machine, or even a 138inch model, to accommodate these larger items.
As many hotels also progress to higher-thread-count linens, as well as potentially going to 100% cotton sheets and pillowcases, the complexity of providing a professional ironing service also increases.
The proper combination of speed and temperature is but one concern. Ironer tape marks and lines can become a challenge if the pads, pressures on the rolls, and movement of the tapes are not monitored and adjusted as necessary.
These concerns go hand in hand with the fact that as the threads are woven tighter and tighter, soil and
stains become more of a challenge to release and remove. The need for higher water temperatures, as well as more aggressive chemical formulations, comes into play. Since we process almost 100% customer-owned garments, we must always be diligent in our care of the linens and do everything within our power to enhance their life span.
One of my early mentors told me something that I have never forgotten: “Doing the perfect load of laundry is like growing the perfect rose—it happens rarely, but we must always strive for perfection.” ALN

Our unique ATLAS Frame eliminates the weak points from traditional four-column hydraulic press construction. Its joint-free design ensures maximum strength, integrity and operational reliability up to 62 bar pressure. Two solid rectangular frame elements are cut from 8” solid steel slabs along with the top and bottom platforms. Leave the columns to the Romans. DEEP CHEST IRONING!
Torsion Bar
•
•
Floating Chest
•
Drive
•
Without Torsion Bar
• Difficult to maintain proper roll down across the width of the ironer; there is no assurance the ironer can provide consistent uniform drying and the flatwork’s smooth travel without making daily adjustments.
Non-Floating Chest
• Does not self-center and adjust for variations; the ironer roll tends to ride up out of the chest, loses contact under pressure and shortens the life of the pads
Drive
• Progressive speed differential: speed synchronization is difficult, stretching and distorting goods while leaving ironer tape and ribbon markings, causing excess slippage.
• All rolls run at equal speed (direct controllable speed) For a full comparison and to view Braun’s unique features and functionality, go to www.gabraun.com/ironer-solutions
JETZ Service Co.

Braun’s torsion bar suspension distributes pressure evenly along each roll, eliminating the need for daily adjustments to maintain correct contact
Every Braun ironer includes a torsion bar on each ironing roll
Braun’s floating chest, along with the torsion bar, self-center during operation to the ironing roll, optimizing the contact area under pressure
Poly-chain drive ensures high reliability, low maintenance, and low cost of ownership

Continental names Darling’s Sales & Service Co. OPL Distributor of Year
OSHKOSH, Wis. — Continental Girbau Inc. recently recognized Darling’s Sales & Service Co., in Blaine, Minn., as its 2014 On-Premises Laundry Distributor of the Year, according to a company press release.
Darling’s Sales & Service Co. has received 10 On-Premises Laundry Distributor of the Year Awards since partnering with Continental.
“They were one of the first in the industry to partner with Continental in 1995,” says Joel Jorgensen, vice president of sales and customer services for Continental. “It’s been a fantastic business partnership based on trust, honesty and good will. Darling’s has always provided unrivaled personal service and attention to detail.”
In addition to celebrating the award, this year marks the 50th anniversary for Darling’s Sales & Service Co.
Founder Ralph Darling says, “I started the business by doing service work out of my garage. I decided at a young age that I would start my own business and I never gave up on that dream. Over the years, the business grew and grew.”
Family-owned and -operated by Darling, his wife Nancy, and his son Brad, the company is committed to providing quality equipment and excellent service to customers, according to Darling.
“In the early years, I had to beg for a line of equipment to sell,” says Darling. “There were so many distributors in our
area back then. Now there are only four. I feel that we sell the best equipment there is.”
Tingue, Brown & Co. launches Tingue Canada division in Ontario
SADDLE BROOK, N.J. — Laundry product supplier Tingue, Brown & Co. has launched Tingue Canada in Orillia, Ontario.
Tingue Canada offers shipping within 24 hours on a full line of laundry textiles and supplies from stock, including flatwork ironer pads, covers, belts, aprons and guide tapes, and a wide range of cleaning, waxing and lubricating products.
The new division eliminates the delays associated with clearing customs and other costs incurred when shipping internationally, according to the company.
“We understand that when laundries need products and supplies for their flatwork ironers, folders and feeders, they usually need them right away in order to keep their plants running efficiently,” says Ty Acton, vice president. “Now that we’re operating, stocking and shipping from within Canada, we’re in a position to deliver much faster than in previous years.”
Now, orders from Ontario are to arrive within 24 to 48 hours from receipt while orders from as far as British Columbia are to arrive within three to four days, saving up to several weeks in transit while also allowing the timely delivery of guaranteed, overnight shipments, the company says.
Tingue Canada is staffed by Toronto resident Patrick Robertson, sales representative, and supported by five additional sales representatives serving Canadian laundry operators.

Charles Miles and his team won the Cintas & Carhartt Tough Crew Contest and earned $2,500 credit for Carhartt gear. (Photo: Business Wire)
Tough Crew Contest is Charles Miles and his construction crew. Miles will receive $2,500 in credit to outfit his local team in Carhartt.
In his entry, Miles described his crew as hard workers who build whiskey warehouses throughout Kentucky for some well-known brands.
The Cintas & Carhartt Tough Crew Contest, which launched in 2014, encourages individuals to share how their crews “Outwork Them All®” and explain why they rely on Carhartt, a brand designed for hardworking people, to help them get the job done, the companies say.
“This year, we took a slightly different approach and recognized hard-working crews throughout the U.S. and Canada,” says John Rudy, senior marketing and strategy manager for Cintas Corp. “We gathered some great stories from dedicated, diligent groups of men and women working in all types of industries, and we look forward to launching the contest again in the fall.”
Falvey Linen Supply plans Massachusetts expansion
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Falvey Linen Supply Inc. plans to open a new facility here, according to a City of Springfield press release.
Falvey Linen Supply, founded in 1929, is based in Cranston, R.I., with facilities in the Hartford area as well as Eastern Massachusetts. The company says it plans to invest $7 million in a new 240,000-squarefoot building on 17 acres of land, including renovations and new laundry equipment, at
100 Brookdale Dr., Springfield.
The city expects the investment to create more than 100 new jobs.
Falvey is currently doing due diligence procedures on the project, including permitting activities, building design and water and sewer.
In addition, the company is seeking incentives through the state’s Economic Development Incentive Program, which would require participation of a local tax increment financing agreement, to help assist with the significant investment.
TRSA European tour prompts Calif. laundry to upgrade facilities
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Magic Laundry Services has launched a $4 million upgrade of its Montebello, Calif., facilities to increase capacity and efficiency, the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) reports.
Magic sought ideas for business improvement during a June tour of laundries in the London area organized by TRSA. There, outsourcing of hotel work is the norm.
Upon returning home, Magic decided to replace 8-year-old tunnel washers with two new jumbo models with automatic loading and discharge systems. The transformation will allow Magic to serve more California high-end hotels as they seek water savings by outsourcing linen supply instead of laundering on their premises.
“It’s easier to bring automation to rental: it’s one basic and systematic system,” says Harry Kertenian, Magic’s owner. ALN
