The association says it recognizes that because of the coronavirus/ COVID-19 pandemic, some people are comfortable with traveling while others are unable or unwilling to do so.

ALM says that it will follow current guidance and recommendations for the in-person experience, with additional safety measures for comfort.

The association adds it is working to create a virtual experience that allows attendees to fully benefit from the safety of their home or office.

Spotlight on women in laundry

First in two-part series highlights four women who have excelled in laundry/linen services

CHICAGO — Theresa Garcia, vice president of operations, and Patricia Garcia Luna, vice president of administration, with Division Laundry & Cleaners in San Antonio, which provides commercial laundry services for South and Central Texas, believe that being women in the laundry/linen services industry presents challenges.

The sisters also believe it offers opportunities.

“Some challenges that we face are gender stereotypes, that we are ‘too emotional’ or ‘too bossy,’” they share. “Our perspective is that we are passionate and have leadership skills. We have to continue to fight these gender stereotypes.”

Prepping Clean 2021 amid pandemic uncertainty

Postponement not option if coronavirus/COVID-19 restrictions prevent gathering in June

ATLANTA — Messe Frankfurt is actively preparing for Clean Show 2021, scheduled here for June 10-13, but if COVID-19 pandemic restrictions prevent activities from taking place onsite as planned, Clean will likely not happen again until 2023, according to organizers.

Show Director Greg Jira updated Textile Care Allied Trades Association members on the show’s status during a recent webinar. TCATA and four other textile care trade associations—Association for Linen Management (ALM), Coin Laundry Association (CLA), Drycleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI), and TRSA, the association for linen, uniform and facility services—sold the Clean Show to Messe Frankfurt in 2018.

Messe retained longtime show manager Riddle & Associates to manage the 2019 event in New Orleans but now has fully taken the reins for Clean 2021 in the Georgia World Congress Center.

Is the new “Zoom world” of communication working for your staff, customers and suppliers? 27.6% Yes 51.7% No 20.7% don’t know

CHICAGO — The coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic has changed the laundry industry, from business to operation practices, from safety to sales.

That’s what laundry managers and operators who participated in the most recent American Laundry News Your Views survey indicate.

More than 90 of respondents say their business has changed because of the pandemic. Only 9.7 say it hasn’t.

Not surprisingly, the greatest change has been a drop in business (customers, poundage, revenue, etc.) for many survey takers.

Other changes mentioned include using more personal protective equipment (PPE), more sanitizing in the plant and offering more products.

In fact, 48.3 of respondents say their laundry/linen service has added products to increase business. Many indicate they’ve added reusable barrier products (gowns, lab coats, PPE, etc.). Other products shared by survey takers include masks, ultraviolet (UV) lighting and social distancing mats.

In terms of safety, most respondents indicate their operations have made changes to make things safer for both employees (93.6 “yes” vs. 6.5 “no”) and customers (Yes: 80.7 , No: 12.9 , I don’t know: 6.5 ).

The biggest change, according to survey takers, has been plant cleaning (83.3 ), followed by mandatory masks (70 ), adjusting break times/using more PPE (both 56.7 ) and the use of plastic partitions (23.3 ).

Other changes for employees respondents share include temperature checks/screenings, more hand sanitizer stations and increased airflow between work stations.

Many of the ways survey takers say they’ve increased employee safety have been adapted to protect customers. These include drivers wearing masks/ gloves, maintaining distance and sanitizing trucks. Some respondents also indicate they check that customers’ products remain sealed until delivered.

Regarding office and sales staff, 40 of operators indicate those employees are working in-office, while 20 are working from home. More than 33 say they are using a home-office combination with their office and sales staff. Finally, as the use of oom and other online meeting applications have risen during the pandemic, more than half of survey takers indicate the new “ oom world” of communication isn’t working for staff, customers and suppliers. Almost 28 say it is working, while 20.7 don’t know.

For respondents who say the new communication methods are working, many share they like the virtual face-to-face option to limit contact as opposed to simple phone calls or e-mails. Survey takers indicating the methods aren’t working apparently are deciding to not use the applications.

One operator writes, “We are choosing to do business with vendors who come in person.”

The Clean Show is North America’s largest exposition of laundering, drycleaning and textile care services, supplies and equip-

ment. Clean 2019 attracted more than 11,000 industry professionals and 452 exhibiting companies.

“We know that the global pandemic is wreaking havoc within our industry,” Jira says about preparations for Clean 2021. “We are operating as if there will be an end to all this and that, a year from now in June, we will be in a better place.

We believe it will be a great show but we are fully expecting it to be less square footage (than 2019 in New Orleans).”

Jira says postponing Clean 2021 isn’t an option, with Germany’s Texcare International—also run by Messe Frankfurt—already having been moved to November 2021 from its original June 2020 dates. Many of Clean’s larger exhibitors also traditionally exhibit at Texcare.

“If, by some chance, June isn’t going to work on a national health level or we’re not allowed into the building, more than likely, the show will just not happen,” Jira says. “We can’t move it into the next year. We’ll then be too close to (the) 2023 (event). There are so many contracts at play, and obligations, that would be too hard to do.”

Sales Associate Jewell Kowzan says the most common question she receives is what will become of deposits for exhibit space if the pandemic worsens, travel restrictions are imposed, etc.

“We will be refunding exhibitors should that happen,” says Kowzan, adding that an email would be distributed to exhibitors clarifying that position.

Spotlight on …

If you thumbed through this issue of American Laundry News before reading my note, you likely noticed this month’s publication shines the spotlight on two important topics in the industry.

The first, starting on page 1, is our spotlight on women who’ve achieved success in the laundry and linen services industry.

As I learned early on when I started with this publication, leadership roles in the industry are predominantly held by men. That’s likely because of the industrial nature of commercial laundry operations.

However, in this day and age of diversity and equality, it’s vital to realize that women are more than capable of leading and managing a laundry operation.

I asked around the industry for nominations of women who have excelled in the industry to be profiled, and the industry came through.

Just how successful are the women who were nominated by their peers and agreed to be profiled?

This issue, you’ll read about how two sisters took different

paths to rise in the family business. Another made a 20-year detour to Greece. The last woman in leadership in this issue worked her way up in the business to make a better life for her son and herself.

I’m sure you’ll agree that these women have inspiring, strong stories. In fact, all of the stories were so wonderful, I couldn’t fit all of them into one issue. You’ll be able to read more in October.

The other spotlight for this issue is shined on industry distributors in the form of our annual Distributors Directory.

It’s likely that as a laundry

operator, you’ve purchased equipment or other products through a distributor, and distributors sell all types of products, from equipment to chemicals. This annual directory can help you find the companies distributing the equipment, products and services your need.

This year, the directory starts on page 8. Information on the distributors is listed alphabetically by city and state to help you find a distributor near your laundry operation.

Say you’re in Arizona. You’d find the section of the Distributors Directory for Arizona (which happens to be on page 8). Under the state heading, you’ll find a list of industry distributors operating in the state.

Each business listing features the distributor’s name, the types of equipment/products it provides and contact information. From there, you can contact the distributors to find out exactly the brands and products and services they offer, along with their coverage areas.

It’s just our way to help keep it clean, everybody! ALN

Processing surgical gowns in a laundry (Part 2)

Y ou’ll recall that last issue, I began answering a question from a military reader:

“Do you have any guidelines/specifications for processing and sterilizing reusable surgeon gowns?”

In Part 1, I covered bacteria/virus removal, sorting, stains and equipment. I’ll wrap up my answer this time, examining chemistry further, extraction, drying and inspection.

I do not recommend using any bleach or fabric softener on these products. While an argument could be made that bleach will aid in the disinfection of the textile product, it will have no other positive effect and will cause a decrease in life expectancy of the gown.

Since the fabric is 100% man-made polyester, fabric softener will have no effect on the hand of the fabric. Since fabric softener was created to bond with cotton fibers, placing it in a wash formula designed for 100% polyester fabric is a waste of money and will cause quality problems.

The fabric softener does not bond properly to the fabric but instead creates spots that look like an oil stain. These easily wash out in the next wash cycle but the end-user will reject the gowns because they will look stained. So, simply put, do not use any softener on this category of product.

I do use just enough laundry sour to ensure that the final pH on the gown is close to 6 so that it will not irritate the skin of the user. To maintain a like-new level of barrier quality, I always used a barrier retreatment product.

Drawing attendees during a pandemic could be a challenge, and Jira says Messe Frankfurt has budgeted funds for additional marketing and advertising.

She says the same cancellation and refund policy at prior shows is essentially in place. Exhibitors canceling through October 15 will receive a full refund less a $95 Messe Frankfurt administration fee, while those canceling between October 15 and January 15 will receive a 30% refund.

Kowzan tells American Trade Magazines that as of July 23, there have been 114 contracts submitted to reserve space at Clean 2021.

TCATA and the other associations remain involved with Clean and will provide the educational content and industry support that are key to the event’s success.

“We’re committed to building on the incredible legacy that the founding associations, along with Riddle & Associates, built,” Jira says. “In a word, I think what you can expect is consistency. It is our belief that we do not change what has made the

show great, and we leverage Messe Frankfurt’s global resources to help attract representation from other affiliated markets that perhaps had not been reached in the past.”

Companies that exhibited at Clean 2019 have the first crack at reserving space for the Atlanta show on a first-come, first-served basis. Remaining exhibit space will open to other interested parties this fall.

Attendee registration for Clean 2021 is scheduled to open in November.

In my laundry in Milwaukee, we had a Sutter Barrier tester and tested three articles of clothing from every wash load. We were able to show that with the use of a barrier retreatment product the barrier effectiveness of a brand-new gown was the same as a gown that had been processed 75 times.

The extraction cycle does not need to be overly long because the fabric will release its water quickly. I do recommend drying the gowns at a temperature not to exceed 160 F and to avoid over-drying the gowns. Being made of polyester the gowns will easily be damaged by high heat.

Dryers should be inspected between each load to ensure that there are no sharp objects stuck to the side of the dryer. A small piece of wire stuck to the side of the dryer can cause numerous fabric pulls on gowns.

Once the gowns are dried, they should be processed over an inspection table where they are checked for pinholes and to ensure that all the ties are in proper working order.

If possible, the gown should be marked each time it is inspected. This can be done via a bar code, micro-chip or quality control grid. My end users liked the QC grid because they could see how many times the gown had been used and could verify they had been inspected.

Instead of putting an X in the grid, we had the inspector put their number or letter in the grid. This acted as a final quality control check. If there was a problem with the gown discovered by the end-user, we had an accountability trail right back to the inspector.

Each organization determines which department will fold the reusable surgeon gowns and prepare them for steam sterilization. My recommendation here is to work with your system to determine the most acceptable way and location to get this done.

Pass off tabs made popular by disposal gowns are available to be used with reusable gowns to ensure a consistent technique can be used in the OR department.

Healthcare Support Services, Traverse City, Michigan, doesn’t think being a woman in the laundry industry is any more challenging than being a woman in any other market.

“I don’t discount that there can be more professional barriers for women than there are for men, but I have not personally felt that my gender is a disadvantage and I have always felt supported by my peers both male and female,” she says.

“I do believe that as in any industry we need to recognize the value of the women who work in our companies,” shares No l Hammer Richardson, president, Shasta Linen Supply, serving the Sacramento and San Juaquin Valleys in California.

“I am a firm believer that women are extremely capable of multitasking and problem solving, which are skill sets very necessary for production and management in our facilities.”

All four of these women have shown themselves “extremely capable” and have conquered challenges to succeed in the laundry industry and were nominated by their peers for this article. That’s why in part 1 of a two-part series, American Laundry News is shining a spotlight on these women of excellence and their careers.

Growing up, neither of the Garcia sisters planned on being involved in the family laundry, but it was part of their young lives.

Theresa remembers at an early age listening to her father, Patrick, talk about the family business around the dinner table.

“Growing up we would visit the laundry plant, usually when it was not in operation, and my dad would put my brother, sister and myself into an empty low-rise laundry cart and take us around the plant,” Patricia shares. “I knew that my dad worked at a laundry and knew he worked with my grandmother but really did not grow up in the plant.”

Division Laundry was founded by Patrick’s father, Peter, in 1939. The laundry is where Peter met his wife Cecilia, Theresa and Patricia’s grandmother, who became president of the company in 1992.

“It was not until the company was going through a transition in leadership, from my grandmother (first generation) to my father (second generation) that there was an opportunity for me to enter into the business,” shares Patricia.

“They had a consultant they were utilizing for accounts payable and office manager, but she was no longer going to be able to work. My father spoke to me about the opportunity, and I decided to join and start learning accounts payable and that evolved into the office

manager role.”

Patricia earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from St. Mary’s University in 2007 and started working for a food-testing laboratory as a lab technician, working her way up to chemistry technician and then a chemist. In 2010, she started her journey in the family business.

Theresa also attended St. Mary’s University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice. As she was deciding on her next step, she was applying for jobs. At the same time, Patrick was recuperating from back surgery.

“He needed someone to drive and help him daily at work,” she says. “I stepped in and started as his driver/executive assistant and began to learn about the business. I had not planned on staying but I have been working with the family for 10 years now.”

After starting as Patrick’s driver/ executive assistant, Theresa moved to the customer service department and worked directly with customers. She knew she enjoyed working with people from her days working in medical administration after high school and in the university’s student learning center.

In time, she moved to plant operations, working with the plant manager to learn the entire operation, starting with soil sort and through the fleet department.

“In my younger days I did not appreciate the valuable service that our family provides to the community, both customers and employees,” she shares. “Now I appreciate the vital service that we provide our medical and hospitality industries and the economic and employment opportunities to our community.”

The sisters say they have had unique challenges because not only are they women in the laundry industry, but they were also the young third generation entering into the business with an older, more experienced staff.

“We essentially had to ‘prove ourselves’ worthy of our positions with our work ethic and ability to adapt,” they say. “Several times we were faced with the mentality of ‘this is how we’ve always done it’ and had to overcome that mentality with persistence and patience. Nothing happens ‘overnight.’”

Much of that persistence and patience likely comes from Patrick. In June 2001, a fire destroyed the plant, and then three months later grandfather Peter died.

“Not only did our father have to direct the rebuilding of Division, but he also had to keep the business afloat as well as planning for the funeral of his father,” they share.

The sisters were in high school and middle school at the time and remember Patrick working around the clock to work with other laundries, reassure customers and reassure employees.

“The strength that our father had to get through the devastation is something that we remind ourselves frequently of,” they say. “No

matter how difficult it gets, we get strength from looking back at how he had to overcome so much in rebuilding after the fire.”

Those qualities come through in the sisters’ advice to other women in the industry: “Be persistent do not give up. Stand up for things you believe in. Find support in others that will ‘tell you like it is’ and be your champions.”

Richardson can trace her family’s laundry history back to 1886 when her great-grandfather immigrated from Scotland to Chicago. He started MacAulay’s Laundry service soon after arriving.

“My grandfather continued in his father’s footsteps and eventually ended up purchasing the Herb Grow Laundry here in Sacramento and renaming it Shasta Linen Supply,” she says. “I am the fourth generation to work in the business, and I am looking forward to celebrating our 100th anniversary in just a couple of years!”

Growing up, Richardson worked every summer at the plant in many roles: janitor, feeding ironers, working on presses, running a vacation route.

“Although the business was always a large part of our lives, my parents never expected us to continue in their footsteps and encouraged us to explore through our education other interests,” she points out. “I was a fine arts major in college.”

Indeed, instead of working in the laundry, Richardson spent 20 years living in Athens, Greece, raising three children. Eventually, she started working in the textile business selling fabrics for fashion.

“I was scared to death when I first started working,” she shares. “My Greek was adequate but by no means perfect. That work experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me the self-confidence to tackle new challenges with more self-assurance. It was an invaluable lesson and has certainly helped me in my current position here at Shasta Linen.”

Returning to the United States and Shasta Linen was a challenging step in her life, explains Richardson.

“My father was a hard taskmaster, and taking on a leadership role was earned and not an entitlement,” she shares. “I had a lot to learn on the management side, and then he became ill shortly after my rejoining the business. I quickly felt the weight and responsibility of my position and the decisions I made.”

Richardson emphasizes that she admired her father’s sense of fairness and clear-thinking skills. She

says that he and her uncle, Gordon MacAulay, who stills works with her at Shasta Linen, “influenced me with their unwavering support and belief in me.

“But another very positive influence for me are the people in this industry. I cannot think of another industry where competitors can sit at the same table, share ideas, offer support and still be competitors. I admire the hard work, the sense of pride and responsibility for employees, customers and communities that so many members of our industry represent.”

Beyond success at Shasta Linen, Richardson has made a mark in the industry and will become the first female chair of the board for TRSA, the association for linen, uniform and facility services.

“As a woman, don’t be afraid of speaking up and taking on assignments and offering your ideas,” she says. “Also, listen to webinars, attend events if that is an option, don’t be afraid, people are welcoming and will take the time to talk to you.

“Like in any industry, it’s not easy to step out of your comfort zone, but you can do it!”

TERESA AVERY, MUNSON HEALTHCARE SUPPORT SERVICES

Unlike the Garcia sisters and Richardson, Avery didn’t grow up in a laundry/linen services family. However, family did motivate her to achieve more in life.

“I was divorced, raising a son, working in the automotive industry,” she shares. “At some point, I realized that both my son and I deserved a better life than what I was currently giving us. I began work at the laundry knowing that I would have opportunities to find a career in the healthcare industry. That career ended up being right at the laundry.”

Avery started college at 39 while working in the laundry, earning as associate’s in applied science degree in computer networking with the thought of working in IT.

“It just so happened that the same week my degree was complete, our operations coordinator put in her two-week notice,” she says. “I applied for the position and it ended up being a perfect fit. While I was operations coordina-

tor, I returned to school to study business administration and earned my bachelor’s degree.”

Five years later, the laundry manager transferred to a different department, and Avery transitioned to the management position.

“I started my laundry career in the soil sort, and our maintenance manager at the time encouraged me to apply to college,” she relates. “That push changed my life. The laundry manager at the time was supportive, and he is the one that encouraged me to pursue the management position.

“I had a lot of support from our supply chain team and our VP they all made an effort to make me comfortable in this role and were good resources when I ran into questions.”

Avery’s first challenge as a laundry manager was staffing. When she took the role, Munson Healthcare Support Services was without a maintenance supervisor, and it was also without an operations coordinator because she had been filling that position.

“The first couple of months were spent not only managing the daily operations but managing both of those positions and looking for talent to fill them,” she says. “I learned a lot those first few months, not only about management but also about my own strengths and limitations.

Another challenge she faces is keeping employees engaged.

“I think it’s important that they understand that what we do is important and that everything we touch here plays a role in patient care,” Avery points out. “It’s easy for them to forget why we are here.

“I try to balance my time between the office and out on the production floor.”

To other women striving for success in the industry, Avery says this: “Surround yourself with the best and the brightest that you can. You need people on your team that not only support you, but that will challenge you to be your best. Also, be open to new ideas and processes. Your staff can be your greatest asset sometimes.” ALN

In the October issue, American Laundry News will profile more successful women in the laundry/ linen services industry.

Financing

OSHKOSH, Wis. — When you’re thinking of financing a laundry project, contact your distributor first. They work closely with lending institutions to offer flexible financing programs designed to meet different customer needs.

Moreover, the distributor is your local laundry expert. Partner with them early on in your laundry development or replacement equipment projects. When it comes to financing, ask them the following questions.

4. When will my equipment be shipped?

This question can be answered by your distributor. Generally, a document is issued to the distributor from the lending company indicating all finance documentation has been signed. It’s typically after receipt of this document that equipment is shipped.

5. When is the first payment due?

Generally speaking, on a standard finance program the first payment is due 30 days after funding. Make sure you explore your options as there could be interest only, deferral or other step payment programs, which would change the date of the first monthly payment.

Make sure you get in contact with your distributor to explore your options. ALN

agement experience in financing and international sales.

At Girbau North America she executes solutions that drive business value and result in sustainable and more profitable performance.

1. What finance programs are out there for me?

Especially during these trying times, keep in mind that financing programs can be to your benefit with lower up-front payments.

Also know that there are multiple finance programs available and your distributor will help you secure the plan that fits best with your project and background. Be forthcoming with your distributor about your expectations and needs.

2. How does my new investment affect my cash flow?

Your distributor works with you to determine your project’s profit potential by developing a proforma that details your expenses, income, cash flow and return on investment.

The proforma is an essential part of your financing application. Keep in mind there are multiple financing options available with lower up-front payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

3. What are the finance package requirements for my specific financing program?

Your distributor will provide everything that’s required for your financing application in the form of a checklist. Every item on that checklist matters and must be completed and submitted, or there will be delays in processing the financing request.

Depending on your program and amount of financing requested, there can be from two to 15 required items.

IRVINE, Calif. — Prudential Overall Supply, a company in the reusable textile industry, reports that it has ranked No. 5 on the Selling Power 50 Best Companies to Sell For 2020 list.

Each year, the corporate research team at Selling Power magazine assembles and publishes its list of the 50 Best Companies to Sell For. This is the 20th consecutive year the list has appeared in Selling Power magazine, which has been in publication since 1981.

Other laundry and linen services on the list include Cintas (No. 7), Aramark (No. 8) and UniFirst (No. 30).

The list encompasses companies of all sizes, with sales forces ranging from fewer than 100 salespeople to companies with sales-force numbers in the thousands.

To gather data, the Selling Power research team issued a comprehensive application with detailed sections covering these categories:

• Compensation and Benefits

• Hiring, Sales Training, and Sales Enablement

• Customer Retention

Sections were also provided for companies to spotlight any other information about their sales organization and culture that would help the research team fine-tune the rankings.

Selling Power magazine founder and publisher Gerhard Gschwandtner says this list is a critical tool for sales professionals to evaluate their options in an era of extreme change.

“Recent shakeups around the globe mean more top sales talent is available to hire, and potential candidates need tools to help weigh options and guide their career choices,” he says. “Each company on this list has created a winning sales culture in its own unique way, with the right tools in place to support a growth-oriented sales career over the long haul.”

develop a repeatable decontamination process that would help safely reuse certain models of N95 masks.

Testing suggests that specific masks can be decontaminated up to three times without excessive damage to their fit and filtration. The CDC/NPPTL (NIOSH) labs provided filtration and fit data on new masks that underwent the decontamination treatment. Lab results and test data have now been submitted to the FDA for emergency use authorization (EUA).

The company says the UniMac dryer’s unique heater box design and radial airflow pattern help, with proper programming and process validation, maintain the optimal decontamination temperature while preserving the integrity of the specific N95 masks tested.

Through a Stanford N95 Decontamination task force in the lab of Professor Manu Prakash, graduate student members Edward Mazenc, Daniel Ranard and Yuri Lensky worked to study the viability of the temperature data findings for decontamination. Those findings are detailed in a final paper currently in peer review.

uniform and facility services, reports that it has amended the remainder of its 2020 professional development and conference schedule.

The association’s 107th Annual Conference, originally set for October in Alexandria, Virginia, has been canceled, and two remaining events, the Marketing and Sales Summit and Healthcare Conference, will be held virtually.

TRSA says that throughout the late spring and summer, it has seen its professional development and networking opportunities pivot from in-person to virtual platforms due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On July 15, TRSA says it hosted the 3rd Annual Leadership Summit as a virtual event and debuted a new hosting platform that provided an enhanced user experience in terms of participation, networking and collaboration.

The association says that the success of the program underscored its goals of providing quality professionaldevelopment experiences despite the physical limitations in place around the world at this time.

TRSA will continue to offer webinars regularly on big issues affecting the industry, as well as core competencies and best practices. Additionally, these virtual events are on the fall calendar and will feature live keynotes, workshops, breakouts and interactive panels via the new hosting platform:

• TRSA Virtual Marketing and Sales Summit, Nov. 17-18, 2020.

• TRSA Virtual Healthcare Conference, Dec. 1-3, 2020.

Becasue the annual conference has been canceled, the Lifetime Achievement and Industry Award Winners will be recognized in 2021 at the in-person TRSA 11th Annual Legislative Conference at National Harbor, Maryland, March 24-25.

“Our top priority remains the health and safety of all who support TRSA in-person events, from attendees and sponsors, presenters and task force volunteers and the TRSA staff,” says Joseph Ricci, TRSA president and CEO. “While we are disappointed to miss the in-person networking and collaboration that is the hallmark of our live events, we are excited about the upgraded hosting platform that will provide a conduit to an engaging, vital learning experience.”

RIPON, Wis. — Alliance Laundry Systems, a manufacturer of commercial laundry equipment, reports it has helped to develop a protocol for the viral decontamination of certain models of N95 masks utilizing UniMac 75-pound tumble dryers.

The company says the protocol potentially will quadruple the useful life of this important personal protective equipment (PPE). Research suggests masks could be decontaminated up to three times while preserving fit and filtration.

“With the life-and-death importance of this protective equipment and its current scarcity, our company jumped at the chance to work collaboratively with graduate researchers on an N95 Decontamination task force at Stanford University to design a method that enables reuse of N95 masks,” says Rick Pyle, president and chief commercial officer of Alliance Laundry Systems.

“Alliance Laundry Systems engineers and research lab staff worked tirelessly to help craft this repeatable decontamination protocol and supply test data supporting it. We could not be prouder to help research a way to protect the brave men and women in healthcare and first-responder roles, who are on the front lines of this COVID-19 fight every day.”

This method of decontamination builds off evidence provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which showed that submitting N95 masks to dry heating cycles (70 C/158 F), similar to those demonstrated by Alliance’s dryer, reduces the SARS-COV-2 viral load by three orders of magnitude.

Alliance says it leveraged its state-of-the-art research and development lab to perform hundreds of hours of tests utilizing UniMac tumble dryers. The overarching goal was to

WSI donates hand sanitizer to local organizations in Greater Cincinnati

LOVELAND, Ohio — WSI, a provider of products and services to the commercial laundry processing industry headquartered here, recently donated cases of 16-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer to help first responders, medical transports and nursing homes in the Greater Cincinnati area with their urgent need for the product.

An active member of the Greater Cincinnati Safety Council, a division of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, WSI says it was able to reach many local organizations quickly and supply them at no charge.

For one full week, individuals and organizations were able to pick up hand sanitizer at WSI’s corporate office, Xavier University and arrange for delivery.

The company says, “It was extremely gratifying to hear that WSI’s donation came at ‘just the right time!’ as some companies literally emptied their last bottle the previous day.”

WSI says it will look into additional opportunities to help local heroes.

ALM offering Laundry & Linen College sessions online due to

COVID-19

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Association for Linen Management (ALM) reports that it will be hosting its Laundry & Linen College sessions as blended virtual learning opportunities this year due to the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic.

“We at ALM didn’t want to disappoint those who already registered for a session, so we’ve made both sessions blended learning opportunities,” says the association in an e-mail. “That means attendees will attend sessions virtually from their home or workplace, as well as complete a hands-on class project with small workgroups online.”

Both sessions, Textile Care Services and Laundry Processing and Operations, will be spread out over two weeks “to enable attendees to learn all the Laundry & Linen College has to offer.”

The Textile Care Services session will take place Sept. 14-18 and Sept. 21-24. Laundry Processing and Operations education will be Sept. 21-25 and Sept. 28-Oct. 2.

Live presentations will take place from 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. every day. Workgroups will collaborate later in the day at times that best work for group members.

These bar mops are perfect for wipe-and-toss in heavily soiled environments. Weaving defects such as over-stitching or IR cuts reject perfectly good wiping tools from circulation. We buy these at a deep discount and pass the savings on to you. Packed: 100 doz/bale.

When bar mop production runs are over and inspections have been completed, mills have excess yarn. Run Of Mill (ROM) bar mops contain every bar mop that comes o the loom after the first quality run has been finalized, so are more economical than Grade A1 bar mops.

Route Ready bar mops are optically white and packed in bags of 25 so you never have to pre-wash or recount them prior to use. Typically, laundries save 70¢/doz by freeing washroom and finishing floor operators from a whole wash cycle.
