Prabhuji Speaks Ego - possessing an ego and being possessed by ego Q - Don't I have a special relationship with this body in which I am? We cannot simply drop the body. This relationship I do not have with the other bodies. I do have to feed it, cloth it, protect it, and trillion other tasks. Prabhuji - I want to distinguish between small i and big I. Big I is universal in nature. It is like sun. Sun has millions of reflections in ponds. Similarly Big I has millions of reflections in bodies. Your question of special relationship with the body is with respect to small i which is one instance of big I. Big I is not local - beyond time and space. Small i is in time space and body. When you say I am, which I you refer to? If it is small i – asmita (ego) - it is gone with enlightenment. Big I do not do anything other than energizing the body mind complex. Body will continue to function with residual impressions. Since small i is operating with light of wisdom, your actions will be holistic, beneficial to universe, actions of love and compassion and not selfish. This is sign of enlightenment. You will be free to do anything. But you will not do anything out of selfishness!!! Some have question related to having ego like - Is there not an advantage of having some ego? I try to excel more because of it. I remember I got all those promotions because I had that ambition for the promotion. I feel people assert themselves more because of the ego. Can you please clarify this confusion? Definitely, there is advantage of ego. Ego is like shell of coconut. Why is the shell required? To protect the kernel inside. Once the coconut germinates to become a tree, shell has to break. Shell is there until the time comes for the coconut to germinate. Similarly, ego with all its capabilities protects the soul and helps in growth - ambition, protection etc. are required to grow and survive in the physical world. But, beyond a point you outgrow this shell. You want to come out of the shell. You want to become a tree. You want to experience the sunshine of wisdom and enlightenment. At that time ego has to be dropped. When you want to experience Universality from individuality ego has to break. This breaking of ego is the breaking of coconut in front of God. Complete surrender. You need to know the difference between possessing an ego and being possessed by ego. An enlightened one possesses an ego and does not get possessed by the ego. This is similar to an actor who takes up the role of a hero, villain etc. but does not identify with any of the roles but still plays them well. When we are possessed by ego, life becomes serious and full of tension. Have ego use it properly but do not be possessed by ego.

Sanatana Dharma Qualities of Human beings: Sanatana Dharma says that human beings are classified into two qualities. Divine and Demonic qualities. The result of actions depends on the qualities one possesses. Choosing the right path depends on one’s state of mind and the environment he/she is brought up. It also depends on the result he/she wishes to obtain. When a person is in confused state of mind, he/she is not able to choose the right path. What they need is the guidelines of a Master or Guru. Guru can show him/her or tell him/her to choose the path based on his/her destination or object they want to achieve. But, if a person has a particular thing to obtain and yet chooses a path that has no connection to it, he/she can never attain his/her object. A wise person will choose the path based on the desired destination. If he/she does not do so, he/she will be unwise. We have to understand the stages of Karma Yoga first to do the actions in the right way and obtain the desired objects. Stages of Karma Yoga - Following are the stages of Karma Yoga. 1) Doing good actions - earning good merits. Doing actions without expecting returns is Nishkama Karma. 2) Doing actions in a state of witness consciousness - Sakshi Bhava are Naishkarmya Siddhi. With respect to any activity there are two possibilities. Action – Doing and Non Action - Non Doing. Doing - I plant a seed in fertile land with abundant water. This is action. Non Doing - Beyond that point it is non action. Come what may. I will never be able to make the tree grow faster. I can just watch. This is non-action. Many times action taken when non-action is required can be dangerous and harmful. For example caterpillar becoming a butterfly. By breaking the cocoon early to help caterpillar, caterpillar will die. Actions in Sakshi Bhava/ Witness Consciousness, one can be Sakshi while doing action or while doing or non - action. Such an attitude will ensure that he is not affected by the result, nor emotionally disturbed. This is called Naishkarmya siddhi. The cycle of action and reaction is difficult to break. Every action leaves psychological imprint called karma phala. This leads to chain of births and deaths. But for a non-doer in witness consciousness state, there is no accumulation of karma phala. There is no birth and no death. He is in state of being. Being is existence itself. For such a yogi, fear of death will disappear. This is the state of abhaya - fearlessness. For him doing is just a happening since he is the witness of action of his body- mind complex. This is Naishkarmya sidhhi. It is equivalent to Samadhi in Karmayoga. This is possible only when demonic nature like anger and hatred subside. Through your behavior you must assure that you are affectionate towards everyone. One can never achieve anything by anger and hatred; a pleasing and affectionate attitude is the only way. One has to realize this fact and come out of the false understanding that display of anger reinforces a sense of superiority. We can see type of behavior in factories between employer and employee. We can see this in some schools between a teacher and a student and even in homes between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law or between siblings. If one realizes that love and affection can fetch them what they want instead of trying to achieve through anger and hatred the demonic nature will never come into picture. Only through affection and encouragement a teacher or an employer can effect a positive change in a student or employee. Developing this divine quality is called “Abhayam”. No one is afraid of you or you are not afraid of anyone.

Panchadasi - Tatva Viveka Prajna statra bhimasena taijastvam prapadyate Hiranya garbha misas tayor vyasti samastita [24] The prajna (jiva) being identiďŹ ed with the subtle body is called as taijasa and the Isvara identiďŹ ed with total Linga sarira is called Hiranyagarbha. By these two the individuality and totality is referred. [24] Isvara, the Lord is all knowing and is known as Hiranyagarbha. The jiva, which is the individual Consciousness is ignorant (Ajnani) and is called as taijasa. The prakriti, nature is there for the enjoyment of the individual Consciousness, this nature is Hiranyagarbha. When one realizes all these three as Brahma swarupa or of the nature of the Consciousness, then he/she will be completely fulďŹ lled with life, Krutakritya, means nothing else to be done, this is totality. Once he/she realizes that jiva (the individual Consciousness) Isvara (the Lord) and the prakriti (the nature) all these three are nothing but pure Consciousness Paramatma, then he/she who realizes this will become free from all the bondages.

Lord. What is your past is also the present for the Lord. Whereas for you there is a future as you don’t know what is coming, But for the Lord your past, present and the future is the present which is visible now. He is Sarvajna, means He knows everything. Whereas individual has very limited sense organs limited ability. For the enjoyment of the jiva, this nature, prakriti is there. It is very beautiful; there is sun, moon, earth, wind, trees, mountains, rivers, ocean etc. there are living and non-living beings. This whole universe is there for the experience of the individual Consciousness, jivatma. By these two the jiva and Hiranyagarbha the individuality and totality is referred.

Soundarya Lahari: Verse 12

Two things are spoken here. One is Isvara the Lord, and the other is jiva the individual Consciousness. The lord is all knowing. He knows everything because whatever is required in the Universe for creation, sustenance and destruction, everything is to be known by the Lord. There is nothing which Lord does not know. Every aspect of creation, whether it is molecular level or at the galaxy level or at the level of the human beings is known by the Lord. He is all knowing. All pervading and all-knowing Lord is called Isvara. Isvara identiďŹ ed with total Linga sharira is called Hiranyagarbha. Then there is jivatma, the individual Consciousness, what we are. Individual Consciousness is ignorant, Ajnani. There is ignorance for the Individual and there is no trace of ignorance for the Lord. The individual cannot even see what is beyond this door. The individual cannot see what is there tomorrow. Individual cannot remember what happened in the past life or even what happened a couple of months ago. The past, present and the future is clearly visible to the Lord. It is like a mountain. Somebody who is sitting on the top of mountain can see everything that is happening below the mountain. Suppose a vehicle is coming very fast and there is a pit on the road, the person who is sitting on the top of the mountain can very well see that this person driving the vehicle can meet with an accident. Whereas the driver cannot see the pit and he gets trapped. What is your future is the present for the

Oh, daughter of ice mountain, Even the creator who leads , An array of great poets, Fails to describe your sublime beauty. The heavenly maidens pretty, With a wish to see your pristine loveliness, Try to see you through the eyes your Lord , the great Shiva, And do penance to him and reach him through their mind.

O! Daughter of Himalayas, the great poet Lord Brahma attempted to compare your beauty with the heavenly maidens, but the heavenly maidens themselves wished to see your beauty through the eyes of Lord Shiva, in the process, mentally they attained the state of oneness with Lord Shiva, which is hard to attain even by severe penance. Lord Brahma, the creator of the whole Universe is the greatest creative poet. Once, he imagined to compare Universal Mother’s beauty to heavenly maidens! The heavenly maidens themselves were appreciating the beauty of Universal Mother!. Even though Brahma compares Universal Mother to them, the heavenly maidens concentrate on Mother like meditation. They feel the oneness with Lord Shiva as there is no difference between Shiva and Shakti. Shiva Shakti ikya roopa Sri Lalitambika - The Universal Mother. We can see this in the first Shloka. Oneness of Shiva and Shakti. This is ‘Ardhanareshvara tatva’. One of the interesting concepts of divine is Shiva and Shakti. The masculine and feminine principle. The yin and the Yang. Shiva is the consciousness. Transcendent and immanent. Shakti is the consort of Shiva. Shakti is energy principle. All matter is nothing but energy and all energy is nothing but consciousness. Everything is Shiva or Shakti whichever way you look at. There are two paths for realization. Realization of oneness with Shiva and Shakti – Non duality. These two paths are told by Shri Krishna in Bhagavadgita in Shloka 3.3, it speaks of two paths – path of Jnana and path of Karma. Jnana marga - Represented by Sri Ganesha. Jnana marga leads to enlightenment – oneness of Shiva and Shakti but you also need the qualities of Sri Ganesha. One needs to master the mind which is represented by the mouse – vehicle of Sri Ganesha. Karma Yoga - Another path is path of Action represented by Subramanya that is suitable to everyone. We are action oriented – kartha represents action. Path of Action – karmayoga. We need to follow the path of action involving – seva (service), bhakti (devotion), rajayoga to

Page 5

purify ourselves and defeat armies of asura (demonic qualities in us). The path of Jnana and Bhakti is illustrated in a mythological story. One day Narada gifts a mango to Shiva and Parvathi. He says the fruit is fruit of wisdom and whoever eats it they will become wisest. The condition is fruit should not be cut. Subramanya and Ganesha playing nearby start claiming the fruit. Parvati said – ‘’Whoever completes the circumambulation (Pradakshina) of the Universe in shortest time will get the fruit’’. Before she completes her words, Lord Subramanya is on the way with his vehicle peacock at lightning speed. Ganesha slowly gets on to his vehicle and completes circumambulation (pradakshina) of Shiva and Parvati. Ganesha wins the fruit. What Subramanya did is the karma marga – the path of action, what Ganesha did is the path of Jnana – the path of wisdom. Shiva and Parvati are Universal parents. Shiva and Shakti are one, energy and matter. Everything is Shiva and Shakti and nothing else. This is ‘Ardanareshvara’ principle. When one contemplates on the Universal Mother they attain Shiva. A dumb person which means an ignorant (Ajnani) becomes wise (Jnani) and speaks about wisdom and in the process attains Shiva – becomes one with Shiva and Shakti.

Lalitha Sahasranama वदन5मर मा6ग य गह ृ तोरण चि लका । व+8ल9मी पर वाह चल मीनाभ लोचना ॥ 6 ॥ Vadanasmara mangalya gruhatorana chillika Vaktra lakshmi parivaha chalan minabha lochana. Whose face, the auspicious home of Kama (Cupid), her eyebrows are the entrance arches of the palace of Kamaraja leading to that abode of beauty. The Universal Mother’s face is the home of Kamaraja – the King of desires. The eyebrows of the Universal Mother are like the entrance arches leading to the Mother of desires – Mumukshatva the burning desire for liberation. The arches here are referred to Jnana and Vairagya – Knowledge and detachment. Let us understand what desires are. Every human being always desires happiness, happiness without a tinge of sorrow. At the same time everybody loves himself or herself best. The cause for this love is only happiness. So, that happiness is in one’s own self. Further, in deep sleep, when

Divya Jyothi

there is no mind, everyone experiences that happiness. To attain that natural happiness one must know oneself. For that, Self-Enquiry 'Who am I?' is the most important means. Each human being has desire (Kama). To fulfil he needs Artha (money). When Artha and Kama are fulfilled through dharmic way of living he/she gets purified and develops qualities required for Moksha. Dharma has no equivalent word in English. Dharma is natural law of the Universe. Physical, psychological biological order is sustained by Dharma. When human beings follow dharmic way of living, they live in tune with the universe and become free from impressions (vasanas) and Kama (desire). Our ancestors have prescribed Panchamaha Yagnas - Deva yagna (worshipping God), Pitr yagna (taking care of elders), Manushya yagna (helping people), Bhuta yagna (taking care of animals), Rishi yagna (learning and teaching the Spiritual Truths) as way of living to bring dharma into our life. Every living being seeks happiness and freedom from suffering. All actions of living beings are driven by motivations of desire for happiness. But our experience is that all happiness is fleeting in nature. It is temporary in nature. Self-knowledge shows the way for eternal bliss. All our prayers to God are for some materialistic objects. We never pray God with the desire ‘I want God’. Whatever we get in life will not be satisfying, seeking will never end, the thirst is never quenched, and whatever we get is not permanent and the desire for getting more will never end. When we worship Universal Mother we are blessed with highest Knowledge and detachment towards the materialistic things takes place. This Knowledge and detachment are the gateway to the eternal happiness – the desire to become free. The final Liberation - Jeevan Mukthi. By worshipping the Universal Mother we acquire that knowledge by knowing which everything is known. Why should we be bothered about knowing everything? What is the importance of learning a subject by knowing which you know everything? If you look at your life, you have a desire for knowledge. Even an illiterate person has a desire for knowledge. Every human being has a desire for happiness, desire to avoid suffering, and desire to get knowledge. Deep inside us there is a feeling that knowledge is power and that there is a deficiency of knowledge in us. All of us are trying to gain power in some way or the other so that we are happy and our

Page 6

weaknesses are reduced. This need not be just subject knowledge; it can be any knowledge, what is happening in the city, what is happening in politics, etc. Does it mean that a person, who gets Brahmajnana, gets to know all languages; can do surgery, and can fly an aircraft? No, what it means is, by knowing that you get a deep satisfaction of knowing all subjects, e.g., a gold ring, necklace and earrings are all made of Gold. They are different forms. There is only one object, one subject that is gold. Everything else is various forms of that gold! Similarly, knowing about Consciousness is like knowing about every other subject in the universe because Consciousness is the real substratum. Just as all types of ornaments are made of gold and learning about gold will give you the knowledge of the essence of all the ornaments. Similarly, when we learn Brahmajnana, when we learn about Consciousness we will know the essence of every object or subject in the Universe. What happens when you know ‘THAT’? The desire for knowledge drops, because you have understood the cause of all causes that is Brahman or Consciousness. When one gains the Knowledge of Wisdom, automatically they get detached from materialistic world and things. Vaktra lakshmi parivaha chalan minabha lochana: Whose eyes are like fish playing in the streams of beauty flowing from her face. Fish will never close its eyes. The Universal Mother out of pure love and compassion towards us is taking care of us without closing her eyes. With a smile on her face The Universal Mother fondles us on her lap as if she is telling us (her devotees) that “I am the mother of the whole creation and you are my child. You will ever be taken care as my baby on my lap, if you seek me”. The day when we start seeking The Universal Mother, that will be the day when the Universal Mother gives new birth to the human beings who seek her. It is the day when our entire ego, ignorance gets dissolved and new birth happens. It is the new birthday. That is the day when the darkness starts to vanishes. Darkness means the ignorance or the absence of Jnana. The dissolution of ego and ignorance - ajnana is the new birth for a seeker. This dissolution of ego and ignorance is Mahalaya or detachment and the new birth is Jnana Knowledge.

Zen Koans True Friends A long time ago in China there were two friends, one who played the harp skillfully and one who listened skillfully. When the one played or sang about a mountain, the other would say: "I can see the mountain before us." When the other played about water, the listener would exclaim: "Here is the running stream!" But the listener fell sick and died. The ďŹ rst friend cut the strings of his harp and never played again. Since that time the cutting of harp strings has always been a sign of intimate friendship.

Temper A Zen student came to Bankei and complained: "Master, I have an ungovernable temper. How can I cure it?" "You have something very strange," replied Bankei. "Let me see what you have." "Just now I cannot show it to you," replied the other. "When can you show it to me?" asked Bankei. "It arises unexpectedly," replied the student. "Then," concluded Bankei, "it must not be your own true nature. If it were, you could show it to me at any time. When you were born you did not have it, and your parents did not give it to you. Think that over."

Patanjali Yoga Sutras Discipline of Body, Mind and Speech Chapter 2 Sutra 43 (2.43), 13th October, 2012 Five Yagnas Service to the society, needy and surrender to an enlightened being also constitute physical Tapas. While attempting to understand ‘Physical Tapas’ in more detail, we realise the five aspects of Yajna, Devayajna, Pitru yajna, Rishi yajna, Manushya yajna and Bhoota yajna, five ways to serve the world. Our relationship to the world is in five ways. The physical Tapas involves keeping the body and mind clean thus being able to help, serve the world through Yajna. Deva Yajna means offering gratitude to Devatas, the forces of nature like rain, wind etc. that help maintain balance in the world. Any activity done to maintain, bring back the environmental balance is called Deva yajna. Deva yajna also includes Pooja, Homa performed to the Divine beings. Pitru yajna is taking care of senior citizens in whatever way possible. The other aspect of Pitru yajna is to transfer wisdom from one generation to other generation. The father transfers wisdom to his son and the son would do the same to his son. This was possible in the olden days when three generations lived under one roof -father, grandfather and grandson. Nowadays, father works and some amount of wisdom transfer happens from grandfather to grandchild, but with emerging nuclear families adapting to modern life style, the transfer of wisdom has diminished. In the absence of true wisdom, children learn through their friends, television, newspapers, and internet and learn wrong things. Any activity undertaken to teach spiritual values to children and help them in spiritual evolution is Pitru yagna. Any act of service to human beings, acts of love, compassion to human beings come under Manushya yajna. Without Manushya yagna people are too self centered with ‘I, me and mine’ gratification. The ‘I, me and mine’ circle expands with these five Yagnas; the ego expands to include a larger input. For Manushya yajna or service to human beings, one can seek occasion to express compassion and love to people who are

Page 8

suffering. There was a young couple whose family life was very stressful. Both were very ambitious and were suffering each day - thinking about the luxuries that they didn’t have. They came to me, I didn’t tell them why they were suffering but told them to visit an orphanage, donate some money and spend some time with the people there on their wedding anniversary and also told them that it would reduce their karma and in turn, the stress at home. They did what I had told them to do, a simple act. In the orphanage they saw people who were mentally challenged, people who were in very bad health, homeless people. By spending two hours with them, the problems of this couple disappeared, they no more crave for the things that they don’t have as they now know that there are many people who have much lesser. Please don’t think that by doing any service you are helping somebody else, by service you are helping yourself. You come out of your illusionary world and understand the reality. Otherwise, the world would only revolve around ‘I, me, and mine; I have this but I need more’. To overcome this insatiable desire to possess, one has to see people who don’t have anything. There is a famous saying which says ‘I cried that I don’t have a shoe until I saw a man without legs’. Bhoota yagna is any act of compassion and love towards animals. Today, the magnitude of violence and cruelty we mete out to animals is unimaginable. Never in the history of human kind has one perpetuated such violence against animals for food, our dress and enjoyment where animals are used like objects. Please understand that in Nature, everything is one. When we disturb and destroy something, we will bear the consequences of such actions and acts. What you do to others will return back to you. This is the law of nature - the law of Karma.

LADS - Chapter 7 God can be seen with great devotion Shloka 2.20 na jayate mriyate va kadacin nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah ajo nityah sasvato 'yam purano na hanyate hanyamane sarire For Paramatma(God) there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. Paramatma (God) is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain. Kishan’s mother and Chetana were waiting for him near their car outside Kishan’s school. It was the last day of his exams and Chetana had finished her exams the day before. After Kishan came out of his classroom his mother his bag and asked, “How did you do today?” Kishan casually replied as he climbed into the car, “I’ve done my best; it’s in God’s hands now.” Chetana who had been holding her excitement all along, exclaimed, “Kishan! There is a surprise for you at home!” “What is it?” Kishan asked. “You’ll see for yourself when we go home” said his mother as she started the car. Throughout the way Chetana had Kishan guessing giving him tough clues. Kishan could not guess. When they reached home, the brother and sister got off quickly and ran inside. “Where is the surprise?” he asked Chetana. She ran to the guest room screaming “It’s here” When Kishan entered the guest room he saw Grandpa Hari. Grandpa Hari stayed in the US with his son and his family. He was Kishan’s Grandfather’s brother. The children were very happy that Grandpa Hari had come. He would buy them a story book each time he came and would tell many mythological stories. “I have something for you my boy” said Grandpa Hari and handed Kishan a book. It was a story book on ‘Hanuman’. It had really nice pictures in it. Kishan was happy and he thanked Grandpa. They all had lunch and then the children sat in the guest room with Grandpa Hari. Grandpa Hari said, “Your mother told me you children are learning to chant the Bhagavad Gita.” Both Kishan and Chetana replied “Yes!” Chetana said “I can chant all the Shlokas from the first chapter.” “Very good” said Grandpa, and he asked Kishan how much he had learnt.

Page 9

Kishan said he could chant the first 3 chapters. Grandpa was very happy with both the children, he said, “It is really wonderful that you children are learning, your father could chant the entire Bhagavad Gita by the age of 8.” The children now wanted Grandpa to tell them a story before their afternoon nap. Grandpa Hari told them the story of Lord Hanuman’s birth and how strong he was. He told them the story of how Hanuman tried to eat the sun. Kishan was an imaginative child. As he listened to the story he could imagine the whole story and see it in his mind like a movie. While telling the story Grandpa Hari mentioned that Hanuman was a Chiranjivi meaning Immortal. Kishan asked, “That means he does not die. Where is he now Grandpa?” Grandpa explained, “He is here Kishan, let me tell you how, but before that please recite a Shloka from Chapter two of the Gita, it starts something like ‘Na jayate mriyate va’, do you know that Shloka?” “Yes Grandpa”, said Kishan and he recited the Shloka. Grandpa Hari said, “You recite beautifully Kishan. Now let me tell you what that means and how Hanuman is Immortal. Lord Hanuman is very strong and has great devotion for Lord Rama and the ones who pray to Hanuman are blessed with strength and devotion. Can you see air? No. Just because you cannot see, it does not mean it is not there. Lord Hanuman is here and he will always be. When you have great devotion for him you can see him. When you have great love for God you can see him. God never dies. If you can feel devotion for God it is because of Hanuman inside you, if you are courageous to do the right thing then it is because of Hanuman’s strength in you. As long as devotion lives Hanuman lives. Can you tell me who Hanuman worshipped and loved?” “Lord Rama” replied the Children “Yes, Lord Rama. Your Aunty Shama is a great devotee of Lord Rama. That is Hanuman in her, devotion is Hanuman. Hanuman is in her, that is why she is so good and kind.” said Grandpa. Kishan now asked him what the Shloka meant. Granpa Hari told him that in the Shloka Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that God is without birth and death and he exists always.
