From the Editor's Desk: Why Masi Month Is So Special
The Auspicious Month of MasiAll You Need To Know About Masi Magam
Masi is the eleventh month in the Tamil calendar. Masi month is very important for Hindus in Tamil Nadu as it is a special month for the worship of Lord Shiva and the Pitru devtas (ancestral deities). In 2022, the month begins on Feb 13 and ends on March 14. This period marks the beginning of the spring season, once the harvesting is completed in the month of Thai. This is the early stage of Uttarayana, when the Sun travels north from the south. This month enjoys moderate weather, neither very hot, nor very cold.
Significance of Masi Magam:
In Tamil Nadu, people consider this a very auspicious month to begin new ventures, conduct marriages, start construction of houses and buildings, and do other good deeds. Masi Magam is one of the important festivals celebrated during this month. Magham is one of the 27 stars in Vedic astrology. In Masi month, Magham star usually coincides with the full moon. This is one of the most powerful full moons of the entire year. On this day, the Moon aligns with Magha star, which happens to be the birth star of royals. It is an ideal time for spiritual purification. Also, on this day, heavenly beings are believed to come down to earth. It is said that they appear in an astral form and their purpose is to purify their own karma as well as that of human beings. Masi Magham is celebrated with great fervor in many temples in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry.
Myth behind Masi Magam:
There are many myths about Masi Magham. Among the most important is the one that is associated with Shiva. Legends say that King Vallala of Tiruvannamalai had no children. He was a great devotee of Shiva. Shiva appeared before him and promised to perform his last rites when he died. It was on Masi Magham day that the king died and Shiva, true to his word, performed his last rites. He also blessed the king saying that any person who had a bath in the sea during Masi Magham would become one with him and attain liberation or mukthi. Devotees believe that every year, Shiva visits the earth to perform the last rites of the king.
Happy Reading and All Smiles!

Awesome Assam:
What is Assam about...
Srivatsa
Assam is the central state in the North-East Region of India and serves as the gateway to the rest of the Seven Sister States. It is known to visitors for its World Heritage Site - Kaziranga and Manas National park, home to the one horned Rhinoceros. Assam boasts of possessing a host of endangered and rare species like the pigmy hog, hispid hare, white winged wood duck, and great Indian hornbill among many others.
Jokai Botanical Garden in Dibrugarh is a storehouse of valuable and endangered species of flora of this region and promises a retreat to the scenic beauty of Era-suti along the northern boundary of Jokai Reserve Forest, famous for its migratory birds. Apart from wildlife reserves there are many historical places in the state. Like Rang Ghar which once served as the royal sports - pavilion for the Ahom nobles or Talatal Ghar and Kareng Ghar, the grandest examples of Ahom architecture. Also noteworthy is the fortress of Agnigarh in Tezpur. Legend has it that the fortress was surrounded by fire at all times and was built by Banasura to confine his daughter Usha, and isolate her from her true love - Anirudddha who was Krishna’s Grandson. Madan Kamdev archaeological site of Kamrup, dates ba ck to the 9th and 10th century AD. Excavation and ruins here show the prosperity and might of the dynasty of Kamarupa. While visiting Madan Kamdev one can also visit the famous ancient temple Gopeswar Mandir situated in village Deuduar. Cultural places include the great temple of Kamakhya, a Hindu temple dedicated to mother goddess Kamakhya.

India and Culture:
Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi
Kokila
Q: What of idols?
M: They have a deep significance. Worshipping them is a method of concentrating the mind. The mind is apt to move externally. It must be checked and turned within. Its habit is to dwell on names and forms, for all external objects possess them.
Certain names and forms are symbolic concepts used to divert the mind away from external objects and make it dwell within itself. Thus the idols, mantras, sacred syllables, rites etc, are all meant to give food to the mind in its inward course so that it may become capable of being concentrated. Only after this can the supreme state be reached - Conscious Immortality.

Exploring India:
Magnificent Moovar Koil
Santha
Moovar Koil, aptly named in Tamil which literally means “Three temples”. The temple complex originally consisted of three almost identical temples standing in a line facing west, but only two have survived.
In front of the Three, their front ardha-mandapas connecting to a common maha-mandapa and surrounding the main shrines are sixteen shrines for the subsidiary deities (parivara devatas). Among these, only the two (central and the southern) temples are intact in full and rest of the structures with only basement and pathways.
The temple is adorned with beautiful sculptures of Siva as Ardhanari, Bhikshatana, Umasahita, Gangadhara, Kalari, other gods and apsaras. The remarkable one is ‘Bhara Siva’ - Shiva shown holding a linga over his shoulders as a representation of the practice of carrying ishta-lingas or movable linga.
Place: Kodumbalur (erstwhile Capital of Irukkuvelir which is referred as ‘Kodumbai’ in Tamil epic ‘Silappatikaram’), now a village in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu.
Period: Commissioned by Irukkuvel Chief Bhooti Vikramakesari on behalf of himself and his two wives, Katrali and Varaguna between 9th-10th Century. Irukkuvel were connected to the Cholas matrimonially, making them taking side of the Cholas against fights with the Pallavas and the Pandyas.

Nandi at Brihadeswara Temple, Thanjavur
Santha
Nandi also known as Nandikeshwara or Nandideva is the bull vahana of the Hindu god Shiva. He is also the guardian deity of Kailash, the abode of Shiva. Almost all Shiva temples display stone-images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine.
The Nandi at Brihadeswara Temple, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu (11th Century CE), is one of the largest in India. This massive Nandi, weighing 25 tons and measuring 19 ft long, 12 ft wide and 8 1/2 ft in height is made of single block of hard rock granite. But there is no granite quary within 100 kms of Brihadeswara Temple!!
Today a truck of 25 ton capacity would probably have 15 tyres. Just imagine 1000 years back when there was no such technology, how this massive granite block was transported to the temple site!

If Srinivasa Perumal is on the seven hills, then Govindaraja Perumal is at the feet of Seshachala mountain. This temple, which is filled with the richness of the great art, has been receiving daily worship for more than thousand years. Devotees believe that the Darshan of Swamy who is the idol of Shayanamurthy will remove many sins.
Govindarajaswamy who was in Chidambaram at that time was sent by Ramanujacharya to Tirupati to be worshipped. But for some unavoidable reasons, Govindarajaswamy could not replace them in the temple. Instead of the statue, the statue made of clay was established. Even now Govindarajaswamy is receiving the poojas. Usually in any temple we see, statues with stones and metals but.. there is a yellow statue in Govindarajaswamy temple.

Talks no. 326:
A Struggle is Inevitable:
In answer to a question by a long resident attendant Sri Bhagavan said: “Everybody complains of the restlessness of the mind. Let the mind be found and then they will know. True, when a man sits down to meditate thoughts rush up by dozens. The mind is only a bundle of thoughts. The attempt to push through the barrage of thoughts is unsuccessful. If one can by any means abide in the Self it is good. For those who are unable to do so, chanting or meditation (Japa or dhyana) is prescribed. ...
If one wants to abide in the thought-free state, a struggle is inevitable. One must fight one’s way through before regaining one’s original primal state. If one succeeds in the fight and reaches the goal, the enemy, namely the thoughts, will all subside in the Self and disappear entirely. The thoughts are the enemy. They amount to the creation of the Universe. In their absence there is neither the world nor God the Creator. The Bliss of the Self is the single Being only.

Talks by Ramana Maharishi
Ancient India:
Kalinga
war, 261 BCE
Raghavan
The Kalinga war is an ancient war that took place in the region of modern-day Odisha, eastern India. It is a war that changed the course of Indian history and is considered to be the bloodiest war ever fought on Indian soil. The war took place between Mauryan king Asoka's army and the kingdom of Kalinga, a small, independent and prosperous kingdom. The war is considered to be a very important event in Mauryan history because it ended the expansionist agenda of the then king Asoka. Mauryan ambition was to create an empire that spanned the whole of the ancient subcontinent, more than 5 million square km. in area - a single political entity representing the whole of ancient India.
Kalinga was the final major frontier! Kalinga and Asoka went head to head in war when negotiations failed and king Asoka became blind in his territorial ambitions. In 261 BCE the end result was a massive tragedy. At the end of the war, the Mauryans won decisively, but lost the human cause. Over 70,000 Mauryans and 150,000 Kalinga warriors were injured or perished. Many more became refugees or died of exposure. Kalinga kingdom was plundered and destroyed.
The war changed Asoka forever, it made him fraught with guilt and sadness beyond comprehension. He stopped further military expansions. He soon adopted the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and the ideals of Lord Buddha and devoted the rest of his life to propagating Buddhism to faraway lands. This war not only helped create a politically united India for the first time, but it also opened up moral issues on war and conquest in the minds of ancient generals and kings.
It shows us that even powerful kings like Asoka can bow to their inner conscience. The ancient Kalinga war in India that happened 2,283 years ago, gives the modern world a lesson to learn - to question war and to condemn suffering caused by it...when will we learn?

Fundamental human rights
Salil Saroj
Fundamental human rights are universal and inalienable and all people in the world are entitled to enjoy them without discrimination on the ground of race, colour, sex, ethnicity, age, language, religion, national or social origin, disability, property, birth or other status. Life of inherent liberty, equality and dignity can only provide the basic foundation of freedom with justice and peace in the world. It is a matter of utmost concern that disregard and contempt of human rights are being indulged in various areas which outrage the conscience of humankind. Though the autonomous institutions like the independent Judiciary, free Media, the civil society groups and the multi-party system have been making significant contributions towards protecting and promoting human rights in our country, the role played by our legislative institutions, particularly our Parliament in this direction is, indeed, commendable. It has been responsible for putting in place several legislations of farreaching effect in this regard.
Human rights have no meaning if there is no sustainable human development to eliminate poverty, promote human dignity and rights, and provide equal opportunities for all through good governance. This is of particular relevance in the context of the on-going process of globalization and its potential for excluding and marginalizing the weaker sections and people with limited resources. It is essential that efforts to promote human rights must afford protection to all who face exclusion and marginalisation. Development, which encompasses within its fold the social, economic and political milieu, is only possible in the real sense of the term, if poverty is eradicated, which is the biggest threat and challenge for human rights and the single-most debilitating factor that has prevented people from realizing their full potential.
Unfortunately, the fruits of development have failed to reach all our citizens in the same proportion and, as a result, inequality is continuously growing along with the gap between the haves and the have-nots. We must ensure that the fruits of development will reach every section of the people equitably. We need to have vested interest in promoting inclusive democracy in place of diversities- be it reli gious, cultural or linguistic, reinforced by a commitment to protect their rights and interests against intrusions of all kinds. The rights and opportunities enjoyed by every individual make democracy distinct. But, most disconcertingly, our country now is witnessing a growing tendency to promote sectarianism and divisiveness among our people for narrow sectarian interest which undermines democracy and which will create conditions for the infringement of human rights. Thus, there is an urgent need for making human rights education an integral part of our formal education system at all levels-schools, colleges and Universities, which will help build a universal culture of human rights through imparting knowledge and skills and through moulding attitudes.
Even after centuries of experiments with democracy which is based on universal franchise, liberty and equality, women continue to be discriminated all over the world and are subject to many forms of human rights violations. Crimes against women which are increasing exponentially are, in fact, crimes against humanity. Our Constitution confers on men and women equal rights and opportunities in political, social and economic spheres and it is essential that all steps should be taken to facilitate women's empowerment in real terms, apart from reservation of seats in our higher representative bodies.

The human rights movement in India:
Fundamental human rights
Salil Saroj
Another area of concern is the continued violation of the rights of children, particularly those belonging to the vulnerable sections of our society, who are often subjected to sexual abuse, torture, violence, deprivation, denial and bonded labour. Exploitation of children for extracting labour and the malnutrition experienced by sizeable sections among them are grim realities of our society, for which it is essential that extant laws should be vigorously implemented with new enactments as may be required to ensure the comprehensive protection of the rights of children against exploitation and for enjoyment of their childhood.
The human rights movement in India has come a long way and a number of human rights centeredlegislations have been enacted during the last six decades, which all should be sincerely implemented. In India, the human rights challenges that need to be addressed very urgently lie in the areas of child care, child labour, child education, child abuse, bonded labour, trafficking in women, the protection of minorities and weaker sections of society and even environmental rights. Unless respect for fundamental human rights remains a bed-rock on which governance is based, no progress is possible in the real sense of the term, as development can be sustained only through due respect for human rights. The Media and the civil society organizations should play a very important role in creating human rights awareness and in bringing violation of human rights to the fore for remedial action.
Democracy, development and respect for human rights are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. Protecting democratic values, maintaining the Rule of Law and, at the same time, promoting human rights are the most fundamental requirements of a civilized existence, which remain the inalienable goals of any democracy. Though we have succeeded in establishing the largest democracy in the world, we have not yet been able to fully realize and protect the rights of our citizens which are essential prerequisites for our democracy to flourish. The need of the hour is to develop a culture of respect for human rights at every level of governance and civil society in the country.

There is so much to see and explore in India that one life is not enough.
Check out this iconic stone umbrella inside the temple, the most interesting part is that it is made of only one stone.
Now the question is how would they have built this?

Social Reformer:
Chandra
He shared the Ashtakshari Mantra with everyone irrespective of caste. The only qualification he wanted was they're being devoted and eager to learn. He made sure that people from all castes had a role to play in the upkeep of temples, the sources of inspiration. Note that temples were the hub of knowledge, employment and culture, in those days … they were the universities, shopping centres, meeting points. Ramanujacharya showed his concern for women in those tough days and opened learning channels for women . This is 1000+ years ago…… I bet there was no social media to create a commotion… it was a single Acharya who sensed the need to educate all, so that everyone could experience knowledge… irrespective of their gender. He was the source for all other Bhakthi branches of thought. Having dived into the depths of Ramanujacharya’s ocean of Vaishnav devotion for Lord Vishnu, Kabir, Meerabai, Annamacharya, Ramdas, Thyagaraja and many others evolved as mystic poets. For the welfare and well-being of all, Ramanujacharya presented the essence of Vedas in the form of 9 scriptures. The purity of his own heart, enabled him to convince his mentors, rulers, bureaucrats, elite and common man to tread the path of Bhakthi, divine love.

The state made of 120 kg gold is nestled in the 45-acre complex in Shamshabad. This will be the world’s second-largest statue dedicated to Ramanujacharya, the 11th-century reformer.
