Glowing interior at night
Strong directionality Our office lobby Some examples of open slat wood construction. We’d be doing something similar. 1x6 or 2x6 wood members back braced with 2x4 posts. You’d see the nail heads on the exterior where the boards are attached to the posts. As I discussed you can always put plywood backing or hang blankets inside the barn to insulate the space in the winter. I have some architectural details I could share for this.
Too open for our project, but typical in South Texas
A barn in Evansville, KY. Tongue and Groove joints seal off the barn, but it is conditioned year round. Too hot.
2x6 unpainted wood slats with 1” spacing
Exposed wood beams over horse run
Cover over hose spigot and hay storage Here’s ours. It’s a classic rustic form of a western barn, but also a good habitable space for the horses.
This model is the basis for the elevations and plans that I’ll submit to you. Once I add dimensions and material notes, you can take them for permitting. As we discussed, the primary materials will be lumber (Southern Yellow Pine) and corrugated metal for the roofing and accents. The framing is not complex, but the contractor will need to understand how it is assembled to achieve the proper look.
All of the structure, inside and out, will be exposed. Certain elements, such as the brackets, cross-check doors, fence, etc. will add the character that you were alluding to. According to local sources, treated wood is not harmful to the horses, and is desirable for lasting construction. Equestrian supply stores sell metal angles and even sprays to affix to exposed edges in order to keep horses from chewing on wood corners.
