Letter From The Publisher Hello Austinites and ACL visitors!!! Welcome to the September 2011 issue of ATX Music Mag! This has been a very highly anticipated album here at ATXMM, because it is our first issue starting our montly run and it’s ACL MONTH of course! This issue is full of content for all types of music listeners! First off, we have a guide that we put together for ACL, including the 3 day schedule, an ACL checklist, and a schedule of the aftershows. We also have an interview and an mp3 being released by THRICE! It is the first mp3 being released by a major record label (Vagrant) and we’re stoked on it! We are also releasing 12 mp3’s of local bands that can all be heard through QR Codes and can be downloaded on our website, ATXMusicMag.com! We are also doing some pre-coverage for UTOPIA FEST, which is held in Utopia, Texas! It is known as the “Best Little Fest in the Southwest” and we’re excited to be covering that this year and it will be taking place from October 14th-15th! ATX Music Mag also has an issue release party every issue, and it will take place at Dirty Dog Bar on September 23rd, which is located on 6th Street! The issue will technically be released before then, but there will be some great bands playing that night! It’s Finally Here! Austin City Limits 2011! Writer: Lazarus

Are you ready to go through three days of not only 130 plus bands, but Austin’s great local food, art culture, fun for the kids, and plenty of other awesome activities!? With three fun days in the sun at Austin’s very own Zilker Park, these 46 acres of grass will be hosting this annual event for the tenth year! Not only does Zilker Park host this huge outdoor party, but it also helps keep Austin’s future green! With ACL’s “Rock & Recycle” centers, you can pick up a bag and fill it with recyclable cans and water cartons that are littered throughout the festival. All you have to do is trade in your bags at any of the centers that are located throughout the festival grounds and you can win a cool t-shirt! There are also plenty of ways of getting to the festival. You can take advantage of the city’s shuttles, carpool, or use Austin’s hike and bike trail which leads to the festival. Pedaling to ACL is also a big advantage because you are able to skip the traffic and park in the bicycle lot located at the entrance of the festival. Also, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop will be hosting a fix and repair tent as well. Don’t forget to stay hydrated! CamelBak filling stations offer FREE filtered water daily! All you have to do is bring your own bottle or keep your H2O carton with you throughout the festival. After rockin’ out and getting your ears buzzing with great music, you can go relax at many of the great lounge areas and zones that companies have to offer. The Honda Zone will have a Honda Civic photo booth and also a chance to win a FREE Honda Civic as well! For those who are willing to carry your foldable chairs and backpacks throughout the day, suffer no

more. American Airlines will be having a bag and chair check for those who want to relieve themselves from carrying so much junk. Another new feature will be the Google + Lounge which will include free WiFi, air conditioning, photo booths, and free giveaways. There is also a Google + app that can keep you and your friends connected with group chats throughout the shows. Music and entertainment is one thing, but you can’t forget the amazing food. Not only is Austin the music capital of the world, but it is also home to some of the greatest local food businesses out there. As a food lover myself, I don’t know where to begin. From desserts, Tex-Mex, Italian, BBQ, seafood, and veggie meals, everyone’s palettes will be satisfied. We all know that Austin has some great art, and ACL offers a chance for us to see it. Vendors from the Austin Art Market will be promoting local artists and have their masterpieces and crafts out on display. There will be plenty to look at including shirts, shoes, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and more ready to catch your eye. One can’t forget about Austin’s kids! ACL’s annual Austin Kiddie Limits is great entertainment for the little ones. Plus they get in for FREE as long as they are accompanied by an adult that has a ticket. When I walk by this tent every year, the kid inside me always wants to join in on the fun. Kids will be able to play games, do puzzles, eat, exercise, and lounge around in the different workshops that are offered.

This record was a release for us.” But for a band that started on tours with Samiam, Hot Rod Circuit, Midtown, and Face to Face before becoming a headlining act, adversity it seems is something they can handle. No stranger to touring, Thrice is making a stop in Austin on October 4 at Emo’s to promote Major/Minor. “There is so much music going on in Austin on a nightly basis. It’s always been a great place to wander around before and after shows as well as an amazing place to play,” Breckenridge said. “People in Austin have always been really good to us and we are grateful.” As far as venues and favorite places to play are concerned, Breckenridge admits that it doesn’t matter because what is most important are the fans. “All that stuff means nothing if the show isn’t great. I’ve had some of my best shows in places that sound horrible and are super cramped. If the show is good and the crowd has fun it will be the best venue ever for that night.” Nowadays Thrice can be considered old men in ‘rock star’ years, but have a ways to go before they can be mentioned on a Rolling Stones prehistoric level. For now the band just continues to make music that fans will love without giving into a mainstream mold. “I think just the fact that there’s always much more we can do,” concludes Breckenridge. “Once a record is done I can’t wait to start working on the next. All I want is to push and challenge us to improve. Music has an infinite number of possibilities and avenues to explore. Love it.” That’s what makes Thrice great: The fact that they still want to be great, the fact they aren’t afraid to explore musically, and the fact they didn’t hang it up when they caught some fame.

Interview with Eddie Breckenridge of THRICE Who wrote “Yellow Belly” or what was the writing process? “The song Yellow Belly came about when I suggested that we have Riley write some drum parts first, and we could each write music to the drum beat rather than the drum beat being a secondary thing (which often times is the case). Teppei came up with the riff. I think It’s one of my favorite riffs on the record. Do you feel a loss about releasing a free track to the public or are you happy to expose your music to new fans and listeners? “I think promoting your record with a free track is great. The digital age is great because so many people are aware of so much more music now than ever before. It’s fun to give little hints of what the record will be like.

If you are talking about people ripping a whole record... that’s a different story. Something can’t come from nothing. Common logic.” And when you release a track, is it a band decision, or is it the record labels (Vagrant) decision? Or a combination of both? “Both! It’s always good to bounce opinions off of other people for their perspective. I think my favorite songs always end up being the more artsy weird songs so my opinion of what should be released is always suspect, haha.” Bands in this day and age don’t normally make it to their 7th album. What’s kept Thrice motivated throughout the years? “I think just the fact that there’s always much more we can do. Once a record is done I can’t wait to start working on the next. All I want is to push and challenge us to improve. Music is has an infinite number of possibilities and avenues to explore. Love it.”

Enjoying yourself at a music festival should not be akin to something out of Mission: Impossible, although it can certainly feel that way at times. A few of the obvious drawbacks that come with a major music festival can include death-defying temperatures, overly priced drinks, a difficult parking situation, and massive crowds that must be navigated in order to see your favorite acts. If you are attending a festival with 100,000 other people, you had better come prepared with a plan of attack. If you don’t you might miss what you went there to see. There is no doubt that plenty of magical moments occur at every big festival, but does it have to be such a taxing endeavor? If you have to wear yourself out in pursuit of a good time, at some point it is just not worth the effort.

There is a solution. If you love the festival experience, but would rather avoid some of the rigors that a huge festival presents, UTOPiAfest offers a great alternative. This two day art and music festival is scheduled to take place on October 14 and 15 in Utopia, Texas for its third year running. How is it different than any other music festival? For starters, you can bring the whole family without the fear of being split up or lost in the shuffle. Or you can bring a date, a tent, and a cooler, and spend the night listening to great music while camping out under the stars without being molested by throngs of people. You can bring a few buddies and spend part of the day on the disc golf course. You can even wake up and participate in morning yoga, or check out some of the unique art that will be on display. Basically, you get to enjoy the festival experience on your own terms. And though it is hot now, you can expect the weather to be much more accommodating come mid-October. As it should be, the music will be the main attraction at UTOPiAfest. The lineup will feature hand picked artists from a wide variety of genres that will include indie-folk favorites Blitzen Trapper and Dawes, who have earned rave reviews and will be co-headlining a national tour this Fall. They will be joined at UTOPiAfest by Grupo Fantasma (the Grammy Award winning Latin funk orchestra), acoustic guitar master Keller Williams, the endlessly entertaining Japanese punk band Peelander-Z, and one of Australia’s hottest electronic bands Art vs. Science. Other notable performers include Avi Buffalo, The Giving Tree Band, and Cornmeal. Some of Austin’s favorites will be there like the Black and White Years, Suzanna Choffel, and the breakout Austin band Wheeler Brothers. What’s even better is that the festival’s single main stage will allow every audience member to experience full sets by each band. There will also be a small side stage where special guests will appear, making for some pleasant surprises. UTOPiAfest takes place in a beautiful natural amphitheater in the west Texas Hill Country. rectly to the audience, jumping up on bars, and gets the crowd moving with his dancing. He draws the audience in with his charisma, that like his lyrics, are self-aware in their unawareness. The video for Danny’s “Baby Bleu,” released with the EP of the same name. Malone is playing on the streets of downtown Austin and at the dog run in Zilker Park. He is a baby faced skinny kid with an acoustic guitar that looks two-sizes too big. But he has a voice that climbs over the top of the spare chords that pierces and draws you in with its intimacy. Malone’s voice aged a bit by the time he released his second album. Maybe it was the cigarettes, the long nights filled with whiskey, or maybe it was the traveling life. But while his first album, Cuddlebug, has the same sweet voice full of emotion, the pain of heartbreak has been turned up a bit, with a sting, a bitterness, and an abrasiveness of an artist who opens himself up and lets the music run through him. “Borrowing the songs for a while,” as Danny told us. Listening to the album from beginning to end, you will hear songs such as “Secrets You Know,” in which Malone “trades secrets for scars.” Through the lament of honesty in “Song of the Year,” you can picture the slim, red head making a break for it. His music is the key to escaping the hope denied by familial dysfunction and the sterility of back-to-back suburban sprawl. And like thousands before him, after going down a road or two, Danny picked up a guitar and found a place for his energy, intelligence, and creativity. The split record he did with James Levy has such a stark contrast in styles that it is able to highlight Malone’s sound. While Levy’s vocals chug and burn with righteousness, Malone’s songs sound all the more like heartache ballads with undeniable hooks. Malone’s music echoes with the suburban scenes of love, while covering the life of the down, outcast, and alienated. The following month, Ryan had to quit the band due to his busy work schedule, leaving the group with only three members. Over the following two months, the trio practiced day and night to get their sound where they wanted it to be. They were totally committed to writing music and learning various covers. During this time the name Handsome Jack, Lumber Jack, and Random Jack were considered in a joking manner. Jack was a good fit as a hybrid of the three members names: J-Rod, J.C., and Zach. The word “ransom” ended up replacing handsome because the definition “to redeem from captivity” or“deliverance from evil” worked well for the group, and Ransom Jack was born.

The group decided that firing out of the gates to gain experience was the best way to go in May of 2008. Within the next month, they had performed around a dozen shows in the San Marcos and Austin area. This developed a fan base and the critical experience needed to book larger venues.

In November of 2007, Zach and J-Rod met up with J.C. and Ryan at a friend’s house in San Antonio for a jam session. The chemistry was undeniable, and Ransom Jack (although unnamed at the time) was born. The four friends began meeting a couple times a week by trading off who would commute between San Antonio and San Marcos, which went on until March of 2008.

In July of 2008, Ransom Jack finally got a break when a regular band at Wise Guys in San Antonio canceled and a friend referred them to the bar owner. Their performance was a hit with the crowd, and Ransom Jack now had strong footholds down the I-35 corridor from San Antonio all the way to Austin. The members of Ransom Jack have been recognized three consecutive years for their unique styles and talents at the San Antonio Music Awards. The members of Ransom Jack have also dedicated their services to help the needy. In 2009, they performed at the Methodist Mission Home for children with disabilities. This earned them a spot on Kens 5 News in San Antonio. In 2010 and 2011, they dedicated their services to the Bobcat Build for Texas State University. Each performance was for over 3,500 students. Finally in 2011, the trio wrote a song to be used in a viral commercial for the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC). Nearly four years later, Ransom Jack is still going strong with well over 250 shows under their belts across the central Texas region. They will be releasing their debut album on October 5, 2011 with a release party set at the Texas Music Theater in San Marcos.

With roaring vocalist, Bryan West, keeping the crowd involved throughout each song and the glass shattering bass lines keeping your heart pumping, you can taste the adrenaline rising in the back of your throat as you watch on. Since 2009, the band has had a strong presence in the local music scene and they show no signs of slowing down. “Last thing you’ll see is your blood on my teeth!” No one could have said it any better than Dave Tejas himself. After their last album, “As the Tide Turns”, Krum Bums have developed one of their best pieces of work yet. Before hearing the entire album, “Cut The Noose” and previewing their latest video for “Gasoline”, I thought to myself, ‘I NEED TO GET THIS ALBUM NOW!’ Starting off hard with “Population Control”, this track is just the beginning to some good old fashion Punk Rock with metal roots. With tracks such as “Gasoline” and “Starving Wolves”, Trae Martinez and Justin Hall kill it with metal riffs and solos that will leave the crowd always wanting more! This is a must have for any true punk fan!
