Fiveyearsago,IknewIwantedtowriteacomedymusicalaboutconversiontherapy.Iknew thecampwouldserveasasatiricalstand-infortheabsurdsocialstructuresandideologiesthat trytodefine,restrict,andcontrolyoungpeople’sidentities.Iknewthehigh-campaestheticof discomusic,musicaltheatreandfarcewouldhelppackagethisstoryofself-liberationandselflovetoayoungLGBTQIA+audience

WhatIdidn’tknowwashowmuchthisshowwouldchangemeasaperson,andhowmuchof thecreativeprocesswouldinvolveconfrontingmyinnercritic.Ididn’tknowhowmanysocial expectationsIhadinternalisedasaqueerperson,agender-diverseperson,andaneurodiverse personlivinginaworldthatdoesn’toftencelebratemydifferencesormyvulnerabilities Ididn’t knowhowmanyredraftsitwouldtake,howmanylessonsI’dlearn,howmanytearsI’dshedto getthisshow(andpartsofmyself)readytobeseenbyothers.

ButnowIknowthatpersonalprocesshasbeeninserviceofamuchlargergoal:allowingother peopletoseethemselves.Converted!isaremindertoeveryoneyoungandoldtheimportance ofbeingandembracingtheirauthenticselves Itisajoyouscalltoactiontoaffirmand celebratethelivesoftrans,non-binaryandgenderdiverseyoungpeoplewhojustwantto experiencetheirliveswithoutjudgementandfindconnectionincommunity Itisalsofor anyonewhohaseverfelttheweightofsocietalexpectations andforthosewhoknowthat fallinginlove,whetherwithothersoryourself,canbeoneoflife’sgreatestactsofrebellion.

FURTHERCONTEXTFORCONVERTED!

Overthecourseofwritingthisshow,conversiontherapyhasbeenoutlawedinfourstates acrossAustralia.Thisisasignificantvictory,onethatprovideshopeforthecountless individualswhohavesufferedunderitsdamaginginfluence.Butwhilelegalprogresshasbeen made,theemotionalandpsychologicalscarsleftbyconversiontherapypersist More importantly,theriseinanti-transrhetoricandtheongoingdebatessurroundingLGBTQIA+ rights,particularlyaroundyoungpeople’sidentities,haveintensifiedinawaythatIfindboth heartbreakingandalarming.

AsIwitnessedthisculturalshiftunfold,itbecameclearthatthebattleforLGBTQIA+rights wasnolongeronlyaboutaccesstohealthcareorlegalrecognition Itwasbecominga weaponizedpartofaculturewar.Youngpeople—especiallytransyouth areincreasinglybeing usedaspawnsinapoliticalgame,withtheiridentitiesandtheirfuturessubjecttoattack, vilification,andoutrightdenial.Theveryrealdangerhereisthat,inthefighttopushback againsttheprogressthat’sbeenmade,thereisadeliberateattempttoerasetheidentitiesof youngLGBTQIA+individuals,tostripthemoftheiragencyandtheirrighttoself-determination Thispushismorethanjustrhetoric;itisactivelyharmingthemostvulnerableamongus.

Themusicalisameditationonhowoursocietytreatsdifference—howitfearsit,triesto eliminateit,andtriestoreshapeitintosomething“acceptable.”Itisalovelettertothosewho havesurvivedsuchsystemsandawarningtotheworldthatsuchharmcannotbeignoredor minimized.

Intheend,thisworkisabouthopeandsurvival.Itisareminderthatnoone—nomatterhow young,nomatterhowtransorqueer deservestohavetheiridentityquestioned,invalidated, orforciblychanged.Asourculturecontinuestowrestlewiththeseissues,myhopeisthatthis musicalcanaddtotheconversation,shedlightontheharmofconversiontherapy,and reaffirmthatlove unconditional,unfetteredlove istheonlyforcestrongenoughtohealthe woundsofhate.

Backatthebeginningof2020,whenATYPfirstsawthepitchforConverted!byayoungwriter namedVicZerbst,weknewitwassomethingspecial TheworkVicwasproposinghadenergy andpassion,aseriousnessofpurposebutwithatoneofjoy.Itwasexploringissuesofreal importancetoyoungpeople,especiallyfromtheLGBTQI+community.Itfeltneeded.Ithada spark

EmergingwritersareattheheartofATYP’swork,andwe’redeeplycommittedtochampioning youngvoicessothattheirstoriesandperspectiveshavetheimpacttheyshould We’re ridiculouslyproudtohavesupportedVic’sdevelopmentasawritersince2019,whenwe selectedthemforourNationalStudioprogramatBundanon.In2020theywerechosenasone ofourfouremergingwritersinourbelovedFreshInkprogram-andthatsameyeartheywon theRebelWilsonComedyCommissionforConverted!.Theywerealreadyestablishedatthat pointasawriterofsketchcomedy(forSBS’stelevision’sTheFeed),butwe’vewatchedtheir growingcareerwithaweandpride.In2024,Vicisnowawriterandmakerinhugedemand, withtheirworkembeddedinAustralia’sculturallandscape-andthere’ssomuchmoreto comefromthem

Forme,workingwithVicastheirdramaturgonthisshowhasbeenunalloyedjoy.It’sbeenmy privilegetosupportthemastheyworkedwithtenacity,shiningintelligenceandspectacular creativityondraftafterdraftoverthelastfiveyears.Asalwayshappenswithnewwork,along thewaytherewereroadblocksanddetours(ah,thedraftwithaliens),butVic’spassionforthis showhascarrieditrightuptothisproduction.
