900 th anniversary Clairvaux abbey (1115-2015)

In 2015 the Cistercian Clairvaux abbey celebrates the 9th centennial of its foundation. The Conseil Général de l’Aube in co-operation with institutional and associative partners organises a series of events in the department in Troyes and the municipality of Ville-sous-la-Ferté, that houses that sumptuous abbey. From spring to autumn 2015 the whole department will live to the rhythm of the celebrations of this exceptional anniversary. The public will discover a new tour at the Clairvaux Abbey, an exhibition event in Troyes, publications (catalogue, comic strip) and the digitalisation of the archives of the abbey and numerous organisations will then be organised everywhere in Aube (concerts, regional conference cycles, international symposiums).

Saved in the Revolution...

The library and archives of Clairvaux Saved in the Revolution the Clairvaux collection (library and archives) is one of the largest medieval collections in Europe. The library of Clairvaux, preserved by the Media library of Grand Troyes, with a treasure of more than 40 000 works, including 3 500 manuscripts and 400 incunables and printed books is the major French medieval collection. In 2009, the 1115 remaining manuscripts of the 1472 inventory were recorded in the UNESCO Worlds heritage register and will be posted online in colour in virtual library in June 2015.

The archive collection of Clairvaux, preserved by the Department archives of Aube, also is one of the major ones of the Middle Ages. In total, some 68 000 pages was digitalised by the Conseil général de l’Aube between 2011 and 2014, the work will be published on the website of the departmental archives of Aube: bundles, notebooks and plans relating to the buildings, the treasure and the daily and spiritual life of the monks, medieval papal, imperial and royal charters etc...

An exceptional heritage since the 12th century The order of Cîteaux was created in 1075, in opposition to the deviations of the Cluny monarchism. From the 11th century the monks and abbots seek new spiritual movements to return to the real evangelical poverty, manual work, and the purity of the Rule. Returning to the roots of old monarchism was their quest. Thus, saint Robert leaves the abbey of Molesme, near the village of Riceys, as he failed in his return to an ascetic way of life. He leaves in the company of Albéric and Etienne Harding to create the abbey of Citeaux, hence the name of Cistercian order. In 1113, Bernard de Fontaine and some thirty companions join the community. The influence of Clairvaux is such that Etienne Harding sends out groups of monks to create four «daughter abbeys» between 1113 and 1115. And that is how the Clairvaux abbey was born in 1115 (3rd daughter). Saint Bernard settles in Clairvaux in 1115, south of Barsur-Aube, in a desert location, perfect for mediation and ascetic life. After a wooden building, saint Bernard builds stone buildings from 1135. The monastery will have great influence on the whole medieval Western world, to the extent that Clairvaux has 339 direct and indirect daughters in 1250.

In February 1792, the abbey was sold as national property. The State acquires it in 1808 to transform the site and transform it into the largest French prison of the 19th century.

What to see today in Clairvaux ? A splendid building of the lay brothers fully renovated with its cellar and dormitory. Space, pure lines, light, the building remains an irreplaceable testimony of the 12th century Cistercian architecture. Other places to discover: the washhouse of the monks, the hostellerie des Dames, the large monastery of the monks, the barn, the large monastery of the prisoners, the children’s prison chapel and from June 2015, the Clairvaux abbey presents a lesser known, fully restored space to the general public: the refectory-chapel of the monks !

500 years of the entombment in Chaource (1515-2015) In the region of Armance, the municipality of Chaource, south of Troyes, unveils a priceless treasure: the famous Sépulcre de Chaource. Erected in 1515, this impressive sculpture(190x300x122cm), celebrates the entombment of Christ. The work was created by an anonymous sculptor of the 16th century in Champagne, usually called « the master of Chaource » referring to the exceptional nature of this masterpiece. Installed at the centre of the chapel, built below the St John Baptist church of Chaource, the tomb depicts the entombment of Christ and consists of a group of seven figure, accompanied by three guards. The work is considered one of the most beautiful of « entombments » in Europe and its restoration was completed in 2009.

Exhibition at the Museum of modern art in Troyes « Raoul Dufy, fabrics and creations » 28 February – 7 June 2015 After the two great exhibitions dedicated to Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall in 2014, the Museum of modern art of Troyes pays special attention to the artist Raoul Dufy. Running from 28 February to 7 June 2015, this unique exhibition presents a wide selection of the French painter’s work. The special focus of this retrospective exhibition is a lesser known part of the textile work by Dufy: sketches for print patterns, flowery or animal-decorated fabrics, silk scarves and dresses. This collection of more than 200 works is shown in France for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in Troyes, after presentations in the United States, Japan, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Born in Le Havre, Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) remains one of the most iconic French artists of the 20th century. Recognised for his mastership in drawing and painting, he was interested in fashion, ceramics, tapestry, furniture throughout his career…

Designer of large backdrops, with masterful compositions, he worked for the theatre and created the huge and ambitious Fée électricité for the Exhibition of 1937. Several of his works are part of the collection of Pierre and Denise Lévy, art collectors and entrepreneurs in Troyes, whose donation of their collection was the base for the Museum of modern art in Troyes. Available from 28 February: the lavishly illustrated exhibition catalogue with the co-operation of Snoeck publishing.

In the footsteps of Renoir... in Essoyes The painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, one of the greatest impressionist masters, lived many happy seasons in Essoyes, Aube. The small winegrowers village on the banks of the Ource, is also the birthplace of his wife, Aline Charigot.

He finds inspiration in the behaviour of his sons, in his family and also the village and its surroundings. It is also in Essoyes that Renoir meets his favourite model: Gabrielle. Today Essoyes remains the ideal place to be discovered by the painter’s admirers ... and all romantics !

Renoir loved to paint in Essoyes. It is also in Champagne that Pierre-Auguste found the inspiration and the models for his paintings. He appreciates the tranquillity and serenity of the region. After short stays followed by more frequent visits, the painter and his wife bought a house in Essoyes in 1896. .

The first artistic steps of a super talent The artist Camille Claudel lived in Nogent sur Seine from 1876 to 1879. Three defining years of a happy and carefree adolescence in which she meets Alfred Boucher (1850-1934), her first master and ‘discoverer’. It is through him that she meets Auguste Rodin a few years later in 1882..

Camille’s work is marked by the love affair ; and that is where all the originality, singularity, emotion, expressivity in her sculptures is visible.

Did you know? Camille’s father, Louis-Prosper Claudel was appointed land registrar at Nogentsur-Seine in 1876. That is where Camille models her first earthenware figurines: David et Goliath, Bismarck, Napoléon.

These two magnificent designers will live a passionate, stormy but unfortunately impossible love affair. It generates a connivance, a real artistic complicity between the two lovers. Soon Rodin succumbs to the genius and originality of his pupil.

Awakened sensation Gastronomic discovery in Champagne Cuisine enthusiasts, the gastronomy of Aube reserves nice surprises. All you need to do is to go on a hunt for taste treasures that are nice to smell, taste, savour… A nice meal always starts with a glass of champagne, a must in Aube. Then comes the time to enjoy the famous sauerkraut of Brienne le-Château, the renowned andouillette AAAAA de Troyes, ending on a cheese note with the delicious Chaource.

Champagne rideally unveils the traditional local

dishes. To this, very good wines are added, like the delicate rosé of the Riceys or the sparling cider of the pays d’Othe. But there is so much more: the delicate Rosé of the Riceys, the sparkling cider, the Pays d’Othe, the prunelle de Troyes ... Andouillette is undoubtedly specialty of the region.

the

culinary

The best is without contest andouillette pulled by string and by hand; and if it carries the label AAAAA (Association Amicale des Amateurs d’Andouillette Authentique), it is even better !

34

It is in Brienne that the sauerkraut cabbage is grown. The production developed over the centuries with the settlement of Alsace population in the territory. The recipe of the sauerkraut cooked with champagne originated in Aube.

Produced since the 16th century, the Chaource has earned its Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée certification in 1970. Considered the cream of cheeses, it is smooth and easily recognised with its bloomy rind, soft paste and its inimitable taste. Shaped with cow’s milk with the ladle, its shape is identifiable, round and higher than wide. A real treat to enjoy with mushrooms and a glass of rosé des Riceys ! Cider is a speciality of the Othe region. Farm cider with an inimitable taste, it is neither pasteurised nor sterilised and always traditionally produced. It is obtained by pressing old apple varieties. At the dining table this golden and lightly sparkling drink is the delicious accompaniment to meat and fish, and cheeses too.

The route of Champagne on the Côte des Bar ! As amateurs of authenticity and fine bubbles, Aube and its route of the Champagne along the Côte des Bar are an essential stop of an excursion in the department !

A liqueur at 40°, the prunelle de Troyes is made from prune stones. It is produced in the distillery of the Saint Pierre cellars, opposite Troyes cathedral, and requires double distillation in the alembic.

With its vineyards and picturesque villages, its exceptional wine, arched cellars and typical cadoles, you will discover a unique and temperamental region. Under the auspices of passionate and interesting wine producers you can get initiated in the secrets of the Wine of the Kings and enjoy an exceptional vintage. Full bodied or smooth, delicate or complex, you will know everything about Champagne and champagnisation.

Distilled since 1840, the recipe was awarded the gold medal at the world exhibition in Paris in 1900.
