A Pavilion For A Country That Does Not Yet Exist Anywhere // Fall 2011, Study Abroad Studio
How does one design when culture and context are not factors to be considered? What is the purpose of a pavilion? On a quarter-acre of land with a 30º slope and no particular location, a series of choreographed spaces present the visitor with varying views of the gardens, the slope, and the surrounding environment while providing moments of pause for reflection and introspection. At the journey’s end an amphitheater spreads out toward the horizon, providing a space for gathering and conversation, or for performance and learning.

Cincinnati’s ULO seeks to foster richness and vitality in socially- and economically-stratified city. Passersby are invited to alter their daily commutes by passing through the first floor of the building, past resident-driven street art or temporary exhibits showcasing current explorations. Galleries and studios share the same floor on several levels throughout the building, with visual connections across vertical sky shafts to the private residential apartments and labs.

A Place For Night Owls
King St., Alexandria, VA // Current Project
The design prompt asks the architect to create a residence for 11 patients who suffer from chronic insomnia. A transitional facility which will bridge the gap between clinical treatment and a return to everyday life, the project creates connections between these patients and the public through a library, tea room, and garden plaza. Private sleeping spaces are stacked at the rear of the site in a tower inspired by the Little Nemo in Slumberland comic, and common and public spaces reach toward the façade line of the street to invite visitors in. As the project progresses, deeper explorations will be made into the tectonic and material qualities of the spaces, and the experiential attributes that encourage healthy sleep patterns.
