QUIRKY GIRLS DO IT BETTER editor’s note

S

o I love design. And play the ukulele. And own six dif ferent pairs of non-prescription readers. And am obsessed with cats.

So I’m quirky. There’s something to say about quirky girls. For one, they are fun to target and poke fun at. For example, a popular question we get asked: “Do you own anything other than oversized sweaters and f loral skirts?” (The answer is no, as I don’t believe in pants.) But there’s something more than the ex terior appearance of the typical quirky girl. Behind the thick-framed spectacles is a personality full of artistic passion anticipating exploration. So get to know us. We know a lot of obscure facts (Cats have over 100 vocal sounds; dogs only have about 10). If anything, you’ll be entertained for days. But more importantly, you’ll uncover our desires, our dreams and our thirsts. Which are very unique to each one of us. You’ll discover ideas that you never would have otherwise. For myself, those are graphic and fashion design. As you f lip through the pages of my production, I hope you grasp a piece of my creative side and become open to partaking in the lives of quirky girls everywhere.

LITHUANIA FOR THE LOVE OF

F

ashion enthusiast Aiste Manfredini moved from her hometown in Klaipeda, Lithuania to the U.S. at the age of seven. Growing up in Lithuania, Aiste was used to seeing two different types of women’s

fashion: traditional and modern. “Lithuania has a lot of traditional influence in their clothing. They don’t wearing traditional clothing on a daily basis; it’s more for ceremonies or for holidays”

T

raditional fashion derives from linen, stones and amber influences. Women also collect glass from the seashore and turn it into jewelry or art. Amber, a yellowish-colored fossil, is one of the major exports in Lithuania, and it has tremendously influenced Aiste’s style. “If Lithuanian women don’t wear amber, they have it somewhere in their house. It’s more common to wear in weddings and more traditional holidays. We have this holiday called “the sea celebration” a lot of people wear their amber and their traditional dresses, like back in the Pagan days. They wear a lot of amber and braid flowers into their hair.” Aiste says that she still loves and wears amber to this day. “I have a necklace that I always wear that’s a sun and inside of it is an amber. It’s very significant to me. It reflects my culture. It’s a symbol of my background. The sun is all a part of the natural environment and goes with the whole theme. It’s a reflective of a lot of (Lithuanian) lyrics and music.” The younger generation is apt to wear more cutting-edge and fashion-forward clothing. “It’s clean-cut, but not overdone. They make a statement. It’s nothing obnoxious or dramatic,” says Aiste. She incorporates both in her own style.

22

No matter what style, Aiste has brought her Lithuanian influences overseas and into the states. It was no easy transition, Aiste says. “When I moved to the U.S., I was very conservative with my body. I was not comfortable wearing girl clothes. I was just a tomboy.” The most notable difference she observed was presentation. Unlike many Americans, Lithuanian women were always well-dressed. “If you ever go to Lithuania, you never see a woman on the streets wearing sweatpants. You just don’t. It’s just a cultural thing. It’s a societal thing. It’s engrained in my way of life.” Moving to the U.S. has brought about appreciation in more ways than fashion. Aiste found a new respect for styles from different ethnic backgrounds that blend into the American culture.“My respect for other cultures also is a reflection of the fact that I’m from a different country. I understand where a lot of international students come from and how hard it is to come into an environment that’s so different from their own and feel accepted in an environment that’s nothing like you’re used to. Moving to the United States exposed Aiste to how it truly is a melting pot of cultures. This concept peaked an interest for other

cultures than her own. “My mindset at that point was ‘wow this is really interesting. I want to know more.’ I never had that diversity as a child.” Aiste has grown to appreciate living through two contrasting cultures by incorporating them both in her everyday wear. She keeps an amber sun necklace that’s very significant to her as it reflects her culture and background. She pairs her Lithuanian ties with comfy oversized cardigans. “Everyone is so different and that’s so awesome. I think that’s why my style can be very modest and professional some times and other days I am very laid back, relaxed. I’ll just wear my earthier, more relaxed clothes.” She has a tattoo that is heavily influenced by her Lithuanian upbringing. “‘Lift up your hearts’ represents my love for service

” and volunteerism. The only reason why I think I have that is because of how my mom and my grandma raised me. They ’ve always told me to give and be generous to people.

“WHEN I LOOK GOOD, I FEEL GOOD.”

Their ideas influenced me as a person now so that’s kind of a ripple effect as to why I got my tattoo. Without that influence, I wouldn’t have that mindset.” Aiste tries to maintain the perfect balance between old, new and blends of cultures to this day. Linen is an extremely popular cloth in Lithuania. Along with a pair of pants, Aiste wears a linen bag to complete her outsit. STYLED | STYLEDMAG.COM

A DRASTIC TRANSFORMATION CHANGES MORE THAN A PHYSICAL APPEARANCE.

M

any women act as if all they care about is their inner beauty, but they secretly crave to exceed in their physical traits. For Laura Hapner, one complimented the other. Laura Hapner grew up in a conservative and

tight-knit family of seven. They at tend church on a weekly basis and always keep a close relationship with one another. Then, Laura had to break the news to her parents that she was get ting dreads. STYLED | STYLEDMAG.COM

PINNED DOLLED

I’VE EMBRACED WHO I AM AND HAVE FOUND SUCH FREEDOM IN FINALLY HAVING THE CONFIDENCE TO SAY THAT I LIKE MY BODY AND THE WAY I’VE BEEN MADE. MY HAIR HAS BEEN A WAY OF EXPRESSION, KIND OF LIKE AN ART FORM.

It’s fun to break those stereotypes and let people know I’m not scary.

“T

he only opposition they had to do with boyfriends and jobs. My dad also loves my long silky hair.” Laura had blonde hair all the way down to her waist. “(It was) long. Silky. Straight.” Despite losing her locks, she was prepared for the transformation. She threw a small party at her youth pastor’s house, where friends stopped by to help make the dreads. “It was a very, very long process. Beforehand, I had to prep my hair by not washing with conditioner or normal shampoo to get rid of the chemical and the coating of the conditioner. I used baking soda a lot, so that was rough because it dried out my hair.” At the party, she bought plastic rubber bands, three dog combs and some dread wax. Three people backcombed, or literally brushed upwards, her hair at a time. In the beginning, she had 64 dreads. Each one of those took at least half an hour, totaling at 32 hours. “…but it was more than that. It was over a week’s time, plus maintenance.” The transformation was incredible. Not only did it change her physical appearance, but also exposed a conf idence within. “Hair has been an easy way to change something

in my life because it’s nice to have something new and fresh, and I was def initely needing that.” Before her dreads, Laura referred to herself as someone who doesn’t “thrive in social situations.” But the dreads allowed her to break out of her shell and express the real her. “The dreads give me permission to be ex tra weird. When people look at me they assume that it’s OK that I’m going to be a lit tle of f. I don’t feel the judgment like I did before.” Now, Laura experiences absolute freedom in all forms of expression and sees a new def inition of beauty. “I don’t mind just being def ined [as a] blonde girl with dreads because there’s more to me. Before, I used to look at the American def inition of the body type, hair and makeup. Now, I see there’s an artistic type of beauty. I see beauty more… everywhere. There are a lot of dif ferent kinds; it’s not just limited to our American standards of beauty.” The conf idence she’s gained has af f irmed her decision to make the life-changing event, and it’s one she doesn’t regret. “I was proud of myself that I went through it. It was a conf idence (boost) to actually completely go through with something I decided to do because it was a big commitment.”

“IT CREATED POSITIVE ENERGY. MORE THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED.”
