TIGERS-GATORS SERIES Auburn has won three of the last four meetings against Florida, but the Gators have won seven of the last 10 in the series. In the 82 previous meetings, Auburn has outscored the Gators 1,437 to 1,344. Series tidbits: } At least one team has been ranked in 35 of the last 40 meetings (since 1967). } In each of Auburn’s last three wins in the series the Tigers were the lower ranked or unranked team. } In the 35 meetings when one team has been ranked, the lower or unranked team has won 16 times (16-19). Auburn is 9-11 vs. Florida as the lower/unranked team while Florida is 7-8. } Five of Auburn’s last six wins in the series have been by three points. DOWN TO THE WIRE Each of the last four games in the AuburnFlorida series have been decided in the final minute, with Auburn winning three of the four. In 2001 at Jordan-Hare Stadium, Damon Duval nailed a 44-yard field goal with 10 seconds left to lift unranked Auburn to a 23-20 upset of No. 1 Florida. Duval’s kick was set up by Karlos Dansby’s interception off Gator quarterback Rex Grossman with under five minutes left in the game. In 2002 in Gainesville, Auburn rallied from 16 points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but couldn’t complete the comeback as Duval’s potential game-winning 23-yard field goal with 30 seconds left was blocked, forcing overtime. The Gators scored on a 25-yard pass from Grossman to Taylor Jacobs in overtime, then stuffed a fourthdown attempt by Auburn to earn a 30-23 victory. In 2006 at Auburn, the Tigers rallied from a 17-8 deficit to lead 21-17 when Florida took possession of the ball with 31 seconds left. But Patrick Lee returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown on the game’s final play to seal the victory. In 2007 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Auburn led 17-3 before the Gators scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to tie the game with 7:36 remaining. The Tigers drove 35 yards with 3:35 left to set up true freshman placekicker Wes Byrum who connected from 43-yards out as time expired to give unranked Auburn a 20-17 victory over the fourth-ranked Gators. Byrum actually made the final field goal twice, but his first attempt was nullified by a Florida timeout called just before the snap. AUBURN-FLORIDA COACHING TIES Auburn head coach Gene Chizik will face his alma mater for the first time as a head coach. Chizik graduated from Florida in 1985. Chizik faced his alma mater as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator in 2002, with the Gators claiming a 30-23 victory in Gainesville. Florida head coach Will Muschamp served as Auburn’s defensive coordinator from 2006-07 and was a graduate assistant with the Tigers from 199596. As defensive coordinator, Muschamp helped lead the Tigers to a 20-6 overall record, a 11-5 SEC record and a pair of top 20 finishes. Auburn went 16-8 overall and 9-7 in SEC play and finished in the top 25 in Muschamp’s two years as a GA. Florida defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson played for Auburn from 1999-2002, lettering all four years. Robinson helped AU win or share three straight SEC Western Division titles (2000-02) as the Tigers went 30-19 during his four
years. Robinson was a AP First-Team All-SEC selection as a senior in 2002. Auburn safeties coach Tommy Thigpen coached at Bowling Green along with Florida linebackers/special teams coach D.J. Durkin from 200102. Thigpen was Bowling Green’s cornerbacks/special teams coach while Durkin was a defensive graduate assistant. Tigers’ defensive coordinator Ted Roof coached at Minnesota with Florida tight ends coach Derek Lewis in 2007. 2011 Auburn Football Game Notes three SEC games this season, making him the first AU running back since Ben Tate in 2009 to go over the century mark in three consecutive league games. Tate ran for 100+ yards in four straight SEC games that season (at Tennessee, at Arkansas, vs. Kentucky, vs. Ole Miss.) The last AU player with three consecutive 100yard rushing games in SEC play was Cam Newton in 2010 (four consecutive). CLOSING IN ON 1,000 Michael Dyer needs 321 rushing yards to reach 1,000 this season and become the fourth AU running back to record consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Dyer ran for an Auburn freshman-record 1,093 yards last season. The Little Rock, Ark., native is Auburn’s first returning 1,000-yard rusher since 2006 when RB Kenny Irons returned for his senior season. Irons led the SEC in rushing in 2005 with 1,293 yards and followed that by totaling 893 yards in ‘06. Auburn has not had a rusher total 1,000 yards or more in consecutive seasons since Carnell Williams in 2003-04. Williams ran for 1,307 in 2003 and 1,165 in 2004. Auburn’s three previous consecutive 1,000yard rushers are: 1978 James Brooks 1,208 1979 James Brooks 1,314 1994 Stephen Davis 1,263 1995 Stephen Davis 1,068 2003 Carnell Williams 1,307 2004 Carnell Williams 1,165 3RD DOWN SUCCESS FOR DEFENSE Auburn’s defense struggled on third down through the first three games of the season as opponents converted on 35-of-55 tries on third down (64 percent). In the last three games, the Tigers’ defense has cut the difference nearly in half, allowing opponents’ offenses to covert just 33 percent of third down conversions (13-of-40), including just 27 percent in the last two SEC games. CLARK’S 20-20 Sophomore punter Steven Clark is tied for the FBS lead with 20 punts inside the 20-yard line this season. Clark set a career-best for a second consecutive week when hit six punts inside the 20-yard line vs. Arkansas on Oct. 8. That performance followed his Oct. 1 game against South Carolina when he set a then-career best with five punts inside the 20-yard line. All five of those punts were pinned inside the 12-yard line. Clark was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week for his effort vs. South Carolina. This season, Clark leads the SEC and is tied for first nationally with 20 punts pinned inside the 20. TOP 10 At current rankings, Auburn will play three games in the month of October against teams ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll, with all
three of those contests on the road. Should the rankings hold it would be the first time in program history the Tigers will have played three top 10 teams on the road in one month. The Tigers defeated #10 South Carolina 16-13 on Oct. 1 in Columbia and lost to #10 Arkansas (3814) in Fayetteville on Oct. 8. The Tigers’ next ranked foe will be #1 LSU (Oct. 22) in Baton Rouge. The last time Auburn played three top 10 teams on the road in one season was in 2007 against #4 Florida (W, 20-17), #5 LSU (L, 30-24) and #10 Georgia (L, 45-20). CHIZIK IN THIRD YEAR Gene Chizik is one of just three head coaches to have won a BCS National Championship with less than five years experience as a head coach at the college or NFL level. After taking Auburn to the BCS title in just his fourth season as a head coach, Chizik joined Bob Stoops (Oklahoma, 2nd year) and Larry Coker (Miami, 1st year) to have accomplished the feat. Stoops led OU to the 2000 BCS Championship, while Coker led Miami to the 2001 title. In two seasons at Auburn, Chizik has compiled a record of 26-7 and 13-6 in SEC play. Chizik became the first Auburn head coach to take the Tigers to a bowl game in his first season at the helm (2009). Chizik has been a part of three perfect teams in the past seven years, 2010 and 2004 with Auburn and 2005 with Texas. TIGERS HOLD LEADS Auburn is 19-2 and has won its last 13 straight when leading at the half under Gene Chizik. Auburn is 3-0 this season when leading at halftime. The Tigers went 9-0 in 2010 when leading at halftime and 7-2 in 2009. Auburn’s only losses came against Kentucky (led 14-7, lost 21-14 at home) and Georgia (led 14-7, lost 31-24 at UGA). FRESHMAN RETURN Defensive back Jermaine Whitehead’s 25-yard INT return for a touchdown vs. FAU made him the third Auburn true freshman ever to register a defensive return for score. Whitehead joins Brad Ware and Kevin Porter as the only true freshman to not a defensive return touchdown. Whitehead’s TD return was the first for an Auburn freshman since 1996 when Ware returned an interception 34 yards for a TD against Alabama. Whitehead’s return was the seventh by a freshman in Auburn history. Other AU freshman to score a defensive TD: Ken Alvis vs. Kentucky (INT) and vs. LSU (INT) in 1994; Fred Smith vs. Tennessee (INT) in 1991; Ron Stallworth vs Florida State (fumble) in 1985 and Kevin Porter vs. Arkansas (INT) in 1984. PICK ‘EM Auburn set a season high by picking off three passes in the win vs. FAU. Jake Holland and Jermaine Whitehead each recorded their first career INT’s, while Neiko Thorpe registered his fifth career pick. The three INT’s were the most in a game by Auburn since picking off five passes against Northwestern in the 2010 Outback Bowl. DISMUKES IN SMALL COMPANY Starting center Reese Dismukes is one of just five true freshmen to start on the offensive line among the 67 BCS automatic-qualifying teams. Dismukes is one of three true freshmen starters on the offensive line in the Southeastern Conference, joining Arkansas’ Mitch Smothers and Kentucky’s Darrian Miller. The other two true freshmen are John Miller of Louisville and Tyler Moore of Nebraska.

The Tigers trailed Utah State by 14 (21-7) in the first quarter and 10 points (38-28) in the fourth quarter before rallying for a 42-38 win. Last season, Auburn had double-digit deficits against Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama but fought back to earn the win against each. In 2009, Chizik’s first Auburn team rallied to defeat West Virginia after trailing by 14. Auburn’s two losses in those games came against LSU and Arkansas, both in 2009. Prior to Chizik's arrival, Auburn was 4-44 during a 14-year span from 1995-2008 when trailing by 10 or more points. Deficits overcome by Tigers under Chizik: Deficit 24 14 14 14 14 13

Freshman Wes Byrum kicked the game-winning 43-yard field goal as time expired to lift Auburn to a 20-17 victory over No. 4 Florida in front of 90,685 stunned fans at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Byrum actually made the final field goal twice, but his first attempt was nullified by a timeout called just before the snap. The Tigers snapped the defending national champion’s 11-game winning streak and gave Florida coach Urban Meyer his first home loss since he took over the program in 2005. Auburn was the last team to defeat the Gators as the Tigers won 27-17 last season in Auburn. With 3:38 remaining, the Tigers used up as much time as possible on the game clock as Brandon Cox led a 10-play, 35-yard game-winning drive that included Ben Tate running for 19 yards and Rodgeriqus Smith and Prechae Rodriquez combining for 16 yards through the air. Cox finished the game completing 17-of-26 passes for 227 yards. The Auburn defense was the difference maker, as it held Florida to just 17 points, 312 yards of offense and 14 first downs. Entering the contest, Florida was averaging 49.2 points, 517.8 yards and 25 first downs per game. In addition, Auburn shut out Florida in the first half, becoming the first team to hold Florida scoreless during the opening half since South Carolina on Nov. 14, 1992. The Tiger defense allowed just one play over 25 yards and held Florida without a first down on five of 10 offensive possessions. The Tigers got on the board on their first possession as Cox took Auburn on its longest drive of the year. With the help of Tate and Mario Fannin’s 42 yards on the ground and 35 yards in the air by Smith and Montez Billings, Kodi Burns was able to come in at quarterback and dart up the middle for a six-yard touchdown to cap the 14-play, 86-yard drive that consumed 7:32. Auburn totaled 113 yards and eight first downs in the first quarter. Cox hit all five of his passes on Auburn’s first drive that ended with Burns’ score. In the second quarter, Cox completed a 7-yard pass to Gabe McKenzie, a 22yard pass to Carl Stewart and a 25-yarder to Montez Bilings to set up a fourth-and1 on the Florida 4 that the Tigers converted. On the next play, Tate ran for three yards and gave Auburn a 14-0 lead with 6:21 remaining in the half. Florida opened the third quarter with Tim Tebow connecting on a 52-yard pass to Percy Harvin that put the Gators on the Auburn 3. Auburn’s defense stepped up and the Gators settled for a 23-yard Joey Ijjas field goal. After a Patrick Lee interception, Byrum put Auburn up by two touchdowns as he connected on a 30-yard field goal. Auburn used a pair of minute-and-a-half scoring drives late in the fourth quarter to overcome a 10-point deficit and defeat Utah State, 42-38, in the seasonopening game of the 2011 football season at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Barrett Trotter was 17-for-23 for 261 yards and three touchdowns through the air in his first career start while Michael Dyer led Auburn with 57 rushing yards. Trotter was one of 11 Tigers making their first collegiate start. Auburn also had 21 players make their first career appearance as a Tiger in the game. Of the 21, eight were redshirt freshmen and 13 were true freshmen. Trailing 38-28 with 3:38 remaining in the game after a Robert Turbin rushing touchdown for Utah State, Auburn covered 65 yards in just six plays to draw within three, 38-35. Trotter was 3-for-4 for 62 yards on the drive, capped off by a Philip Lutzenkirchen 15 yards touchdown catch. Auburn successfully converted an onside kick following the Lutzenkirchen score, with Emory Blake recovering the kick. That set up Auburn on its own 44 with 2:07 left in the game. Trotter was again 3-for-4 on the drive, covering 29 yards, while Onterio McCalebb rushed it three times for 26 yards, setting up Dyer for a one yard touchdown run up the middle for the game-winning score. Auburn had to rally from a 14 point deficit midway through the second quarter, trailing 21-7 after the first of two Turbin (22 rushes, 70 yards) touchdown runs. True freshman Tre Mason sparked the comeback with his 97 yard kickoff return following the Turbin touchdown, drawing Auburn to within a touchdown, 21-14, a score that would hold into halftime. Mason’s 97-yard return ranks as the eighth-longest in school history. He would go on to finish with 176 kickoff return yards, tying for the third-most in a game in school history. Dyer tied the game at 21-21 on Auburn's first possession of the second half, running it in from the 11 yard line to complete an 11 play, 65-yard drive. Auburn had five touchdown drives and only one lasted more than three minutes, it being the drive out of the half which lasted just 3:46. Three of the other four were just over a minute-and-ahalf while the other lasted 2:55. MISSISSIPPI STATE AUBURN #16

September 10, 2011 • SEC Network Jordan-Hare Stadium (87,451) • Auburn, Ala.
Ryan Smith made a game-saving tackle on Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf at the goal line as time expired to preserve Auburn’s 41-34 victory over No. 16 Mississippi State on Sept. 10 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The two teams combined for 28 first quarter points and 55 first half points before both defenses tightened up and Auburn won its 17th consecutive game, currently the longest in FBS. Barrett Trotter, who finished the game 16-for-23 for 146 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, hit tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen for a 10-yard touchdown pass just under a minute into the fourth quarter to give Auburn a 14-point cushion, 41-27. Auburn, which trailed just once in the game, won its seventh straight game against a team ranked in the AP poll. Trotter’s favorite target on the afternoon was Emory Blake, who caught seven passes for 108 yards with a touchdown. Blake’s touchdown catch, a 46-yard catchand-run, tied the game at 21-21 in the second quarter as Auburn scored 17 points in the second quarter to take a 31-24 lead into the half. Michael Dyer rushed for 150 yards on 18 carries, averaging 8.3 yards per carry, scoring twice. His first touchdown came on Auburn’s first possession of the game when he went 35 yards for the score to put Auburn up, 7-0. His second touchdown gave Auburn the lead for good at 28-21 with 4:51 left in the first half as he went in from two yards out to cap a six-play, 59-yard drive. Auburn took a 14-0 lead less than four minutes into the game as Demetruce McNeal returned a Relf interception 43 yards for the score. Mississippi State wasted little time answering as LaDarius Perkins (11 rushes, 78 yards), scored on a 40-yard run less than a minute after McNeal’s score and then Relf found Brandon Heavens for a 15-yard touchdown pass four minutes later to tie it at 14-14. Relf finished the game 20-for-33 for 195 yards with a touchdown and an interception and also rushed 27 times for 106 yards. Vick Ballard was the top rusher for Mississippi State, tallying 135 yards on 21 carries. A 20-point third quarter propelled the Auburn Tigers to a 30-14 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night before 82,249 fans at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Quarterback Barrett Trotter finished 16-for-28 passing for 178 yards, tossing two touchdown passes along with one interception. Michael Dyer led the Auburn rushing attack with 68 yards on 14 carries, and Emory Blake had 78 yards on five receptions with a touchdown. The Auburn defense, however, was responsible for a good amount of the Tiger offense. Auburn had three interceptions on the night with two leading to points. Neiko Thorpe and Jermaine Whitehead each had a pick in the third quarter, with Whitehead returning his 25 yards for a touchdown to give Auburn a 17-6 lead on FAU’s third offensive play of the half. It was the first career interception and touchdown for Whitehead. Thorpe’s interception later in the quarter was the fifth of his career and set up a 31-yard field goal by Cody Parkey to give Auburn a 27-6 lead with 6:51 on the clock in the third. Between the two interceptions, Trotter found McCalebb on a screen pass that went for 51 yards and an Auburn touchdown, increasing the Tiger lead to 24-6 at the 8:07 mark of the third quarter. It was the second receiving touchdown of McCalebb’s career and his longest reception as a Tiger, surpassing a 25-yard catch against Utah State earlier this season. Parkey would tack on his third field goal of the night with a 37-yard kick to extend the Auburn lead to 30-6 on the final play of the third quarter. FAU got on the board first, taking advantage of an Auburn turnover deep in Tiger territory. The Owls picked up one first down, then settled for a 39-yard field goal from Vinny Zaccario to take a 3-0 lead. Auburn would answer on its next possession, putting together an 11-play, 60yard drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Trotter to Blake; Parkey would kick it to 7-3 midway through the first quarter.
