I am an architect graduated with Bachelor of Architecture Engineering from the American University in Cairo (AUC, 2015) along with studies in Sociology. I have been working professionally since 2014 taking on positions and leadership responsibilities. I have recently concluded the prep class for PMP certification and scheduled for PMP exam. Currently I am an Associate Architect and Project Manager at "Abdelhalim CDC". I worked on various projects; ranging from concept, schematic, and design development to working drawings. In 2017, I was assigned project management of Al Sheikh Zayed Grand by virtue of the set of skills I have been demonstrating. I have also successfully conceived the governing concept for "King Salman University", a project in its early stages.

Alburouj is an envisioned Mixed Use development spanning over 5 million square meters, located on Cairo Ismailia Road, just 30 Km from Heliopolis & the airport and 3 Km from Al Shorouk City. Situated at the eastern edge of Al Shorouk City, Alburouj is a total development composed of residential communities, internationally renowned schools, as well as Sports & Community Clubs. In addition to a Prime retail mall, a cultural Hub, a Boutique Hotel and an office park. Alburouj is planned to become a new heart in East of Cairo. The development vision is geared towards establishing a new destination that not only provides the needed facilities and amenities of a decent standard of living but also creates multiple new hubs including commercial, administrative & cultural. These hubs are concentrated in one strip overlooking Ismailia Road. It includes Alburouj Business Park: a cultural hub that is the first of its kind in Cairo, a mixed use development consisting of retail & offices, Al Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and a shopping mall.

Al Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is envisioned as a landmark along CairoIsmailia road in Al Burouj residential and cultural development.
It is the collaborative work of consultants in Egypt, Italy, Germany and UAE together generated this innovative design for a moden day mosque. Mosque design has been stagnant for a long period of time but Al Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque is a state-of-the-art edicife in its unique form, integrity of structure & soundness in building physics.
THE SAHA & MINARET
the minaret & saha
THE PODIUM Envisioned to be a joyous public plaza; an attraction for pedestrians to enjoy shade of the palm trees, water features, steps and seating. The Minaret in the Saha is a watch tower for the community. An extrusion of a single geometric unit forming a glass structure, height of 60 meters, it offers picturesque platforms atop and accessed from the podium.

The Services quarter
Dedicated for prayer in open space when the Prayer Iwan is full, it is expected to fill with prayers in feasts and during Ramadan. It is covered by PTFE units that supported by Fly Mast system of cables. The base of the walls & columns are cladded with GRC. Water features extend from the Saha to the Sahn creating a sense of continuity. The Sahn is adorned by 3 glorious gates generated from crystal like geometry.
The most important & complex part of Al Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is a building-within-building where a Glass Core is creating the enclosure of the Prayer Iwan an overarching GRC shell is shading above. The GRC Shell has 1x1 m openings on the roof on a module 5x5. Each opening allows for ventilation and natural light inside the prayer Iwan which interacts with the glass inside creating captivating light experience.
A podium below and at the back of the mosque creates a separate entrance for the ceremonial MPU halls for weddings & other occasions. It also houses the Imam residence, ablution, etc.

Light is the fingerprint of every society.
Light plays a significant role in AlSheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, both literally with the light quality & light play and figuratively with its metaphorical meaning. Surat Al Nour was guidance, “”اﻟﻠﻪ ﻧﻮر اﻟﺴﻤﺎوات واﻷرض, attempting to physically represent the verse. The Crystal Unit represents the “Meshka” in Surat Al Nour and it is also the main inlet of light inside the mosque Iwan. The transitions in the mosque are impact-fully designed with light. You are taken from the outdoor that is bright and exposed, and gradually transitioned into
the indoor, where it is dimmer. The rays of light coming from the apertures in the outer shell creates light pattern inside the Iwan. This transition from the outdoor to the indoor mosque causes a shift in your consciousness, making you more aware of the spiritual and religious space you are about to cross into. The light in the mosque is a physical manifestation of time, where light pattern changes throughout the day. Thus, the change in daylight is experienced in the mosque, creating different atmospheres for each prayer
throughout the day.

verse description The verse describes the light of Allah almighty in the form of layers: a niche contains a frosted glass lamp inside which is the purest of oil glowing. When lit, immits light upon light. This concept was the inspiration of the form generation in Al Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque. The whole edifice was treated as a single unit that is mentioned in the verse simile. Bait ur-rouf mosque The building is a living being that ages. This is evident in Bayt Ur Raouf dalighting technique. Natural light brought in through a skylight is ample for the daytime.
Light extends architecture into the dimension of time. as you witness the pattern changing on its surfaces. Each prayer has its own unique fingerprint from Dawn to Sundown.

the structure system The main principle for the structural system was to maintain the structural integrity following the architectural logic and avoid ornamental morphology. Further criteria; constructibility, cost
efficiency and compatibility with cleaning and maintenance system. Three main structural systems were proposed as alternatives and evaluated according to the previously mentioned criteria. Concrete Shell Structure OR Steel Structure with (GRC or PTFE) cladding.
Study models were made to physical models further study those possibilities. It was settled that Steel Structure is the optimum alternative as it satisfies most of the criteria and it is also fast in construction.

COVER UNIT CLADDING
The steel structure is in conformity with the composition of the architectural morphology and the form of the units. The outline of each unit was successfully translated by the structure consultant into elegant, smart tubular steel members. The structure extends and connects to the Glass Core through its columns, crown and glass units; creating one integral structure and maintains the logic of its formation.

This study addressed the different alternatives for the Opaque Shell of Al Burouj Mosque. The Glass Core is comprised of 5 to 10 centimetre thick tubular steel members that are connected to each other to create the overall structure with glass as the cladding material as opposed to ETFE in concept phase.
The pyramidal geometric units created to shape the roof of the mosque has the innate ability to improve the environmental mechanics and ventilation possibly through further optimization to the angles and directions of the four faces.

First is the idea of a double skin or double facade which allows an air current between the two faรงades creating air insulation to control the thermal gain in the prayer hall (Iwan).
The relationship between the different masses of the mosque Prayer Hall (Iwan) and Mosque Court (Sahn) where one is more shaded than the other creates temperature difference allowing for stack effect could be capitalized to enhance the environment.
All of those are conceptual ideas that we have generated in the concept phase which we hope a well versed environmental consultant would be able to verify and optimize.

Al-Hadeeth is a record of the ALLEYWAYS words, actions and silent approval
of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). In Islam the authority of Hadeeth as a source for law and moral guidance ranks second to the Quran. Hadith is the Arabic word for speech, report, account and narrative. Riwaq Al-Rwaat is concluded at the entrance of the Library, the main feature of the Revealed segment where the wealth of knowledge is preserved and disseminated. The library’s reading hall borrows scenes from nature and the mountain to bring a feel of serenity and tranquility into the space.

natural light experience Throughout the Procession of the visitor into the museum; he is subjected to various orchestrated natural lighting experiences. The journey begins with minimal lighting admitted into the spaces and it increases gradually hall by hall through the Grand Stepped LEVELHalls.+10.0M This is symbolic of gained knowledge of Hadeeth which increases as he lighting increases. As the diagram shows, the skylight of the spaces are designed to control the descending natural light by controlling the ratio of

opening sizes in relation to the roof area. This in-turn provides the wanted experience for the users. The halls order in regards to the visitor is the basis of skylight design choice. Each hall conveys a specific message which is delivered through the content, the exhibits and the light in relation to the concept of the project. The final Riwayah Hall symbolizes the peak of the journey, the peak of knowledge of the Hadeeth and the highest ratio of light inside the Museum.

Borrowed light is transported to the internal spaces. to adequate requirement through unique solutions. Light-wells and courts followed, height interior curtain walls gather indirect light from adjacent light filled courts. Reflective cladding surfaces and translucent walls along with white interior walls and staircases are efficient vehicles to borrow light and natural conduits for illuminating the light starved Concealed segment of the Procession.

plants used in the Memorial Park are native to their region. Plants in general in the region are xerophytic and mostly dwarf shrubs or small herbs.

project brief The main conception of the project focuses on the Trench "Al Khandaq", a historic battle that occured in the time of the prophet PBUH where a trench was dug around Al Madinah to protect the people from the enemy. Thus the focus of the design was the treatment of the trench. This was achieved on several levels of material perception throughout the city and specifically on site. Three levels of perception were targeted: detection - recognition - realization. The program of the project includes a Museum "Al Mahka" to tell the story of the battle, along with exhibitions and cultural venues complex. Revitalization and rehabilitation of the Seven Mosques Square along with the Palm Trees Oasis are part of the project along with three hotels planned on site along with governmental buildings and services for visitors and pilgrims of the Holy Mosque of the Prophet. As part of the infrastructure planning of the site by the government a tunnel for metro line is to be extended from the Prophet's mosque to the Seven Mosques Square passing through the heart of the mountain. The course of the trench "Al Khandaq" was generated through a matrix of signs that penetrate the city and appear permeated by the fabric of the present city. Therefore, we study the course of the Trench penetrating the city on two levels of impact.
Impact of the trench path at the city level Around the mounta an environment is created that shows the imaginary path of the trench and appears in the fabric of the present city in some instances as signs, and in others as as lighting fixtures, while on site it is physically dug to appear in its full glory. Impact of the trench path at the level of the study area The path of the trench passes near the mountain Sala' and it is detected in this part of the path confirming the relationship between the trench and the mountain during the battle. This also helps to understand the impact of this path on the connection between the square of Seven Mosques, a notable square within the site boundaries, and the courtyard of Mount Rayah.

Therefore, the mountain is used in this project by creating platforms ontop of it to detect those major points of the Trench and get an overview of the city itself from above. This is achieved through two stages.
The first stage The turning points of the path, which are the main points required to realize the whole of the trench from the different mounds. The second stage The connecting paths which revolve around the use of secondary luminous signs to plot the entire path.
An Assessment for documentation and study of the course of the Trench "Al Khandaq" on the current fabric of the city was conducted. This led to verifying the relationship of the trench with the surroundings, breaking through its residentials. The Trench was located in a panorama) way to reveal

project brief Dar-Al-Uloum, is a cultural and communal project. In 1963, it was the first in the Kingdom to host Women's Library with spatial area equivalent to Men's section. The MIT-organized competition, in which our proposal was shortlisted, aimed to expand the existing building & program, disolve barriers & connect all buildings of Al-Sudairy foundation on site in one holestically functioning campus.

Column and beam system create humble spaces except for the auditorium. The Library is raised on a platform +1.60. A central core creates splitlevel hosting vertical circulation and reading area. Functions are on +1.60 and +6.10 levels.
Beyond the Wall exposes the dividing wall morphed to a transparent facade; enhancing visual connectivity and accessibility into the heart of the library making it readable to pass-byers, its spaces and activities.

A well-designed library is not standardized for average, physically capable, middle-aged man. It is diverse, inclusive; age, sex, physicalability, interests and backgrounds.

Shifting to new paradigm, the new Reading Space is located at the end of the crack. A continious path reading hall / begins at the entrance through a auditorium ramp starting at +1.60 to 6.10 m with stepped reading balconies and ending at the new Reading Space. The Reading Space holds the auditorium and the major reading area. The ground floor plan 1:200 children librarydesign is simply a stepped open plan with excellent connectivity between spaces allowing users greater freedom
to change the form and function over time. A stepped staircase acts as the main reading benches, This is also a flexible space that could turn into a lecture hall.

cairo downtown passageways 2016 cairo, egypt urban revitalization pilot project
project brief Cairo Downtown Passages aims to develop a pilot urban design and art project in the northern part of downtown Cairo, highlighting existing and emerging initiatives and activating underutilized public spaces. This passageway redevelopment project emerged from a design workshop held in April 2014, organized collaboratively by CLUSTER with DEDI and CKU, exploring art and design interventions in two passageways in Downtown
Cairo: the Kodak and Phillips Passageways. CLUSTER has been working in the two passages over an extended period, undertaking mapping, interviews and outreach as part of our larger project on Downtown passageways as an alternative framework for development. This pilot project seeks to promote a more diverse, inclusive, and accessible public space Downtown
workshop selected by a juried review were the “Green Oasis” project for the Kodak Passage, and the “Light Oasis” for the Philips Passage. CLUSTER has overseen the design development and implementation of these two schemes, emphasizing a more diverse, safer, and environmentally enhanced experience in the passageways. The “Green Oasis” transforms Kodak into a pedestrian park.

impact of the development of the passageways network The development and revitalization of Downtown. Cairo Downtown Passages starting with KODAK and Philips passageways has sparked attention in this underutilized area of Downtoan. This so called pilot project was picked up by local authorities and developers and several other passageways have taken on similar developments through various developers and
fund sources, in some cases collaborative efforts. A collaborative effort with the residents, tenants and shop owners of the passageways was undertaken as a participatory design approach to the design of this passageways. The approach was meant to give people ownership of their passageways as to give them a sense of pride which would ultimately benefit
the long term maintenance of the network. KODAK passageway is now a destination as it happens to be right infront of the Jewish Synagog and next to a prominent art gallery. Following the development of the passageway shop owners renovated their shops and a
new restaurant opened its doors right into the passageway and it became an attraction for many tourists and locals.
Kodak Passage inauguration event showcased Cairo Downtown Passages Exhibition presenting the background and process behind the passageways re-design and grand scheme of Downtown Cairo redevelopment plan. The opening night received a warm welcome from residents, officials and investors from all over Cairo.

Having undergone periods of prosperity, deterioration, and decay over the past decades, many Downtown passageways serve today as sites for rich and diverse uses and activities. These activities extend to the gaps between buildings, setbacks, courtyards, and side streets that were either officially or de facto pedestrianized. Usage

of these spaces range from food places and coffee shops, to sites for trade and retail: including stationeries and bookstores, bars and restaurants, galleries and art spaces, as well as small prayer corners. Being off the main channels of traffic, they operate as hubs for competing interests and claims to space. CLUSTER's Cairo Downtown Passageways: Walking Tour publication falls within the context of our broader research endeavor exploring the network of downtown Cairo's passageways, back alleys, side streets and in-between spaces as
an alternative framework for the development and revitalization of Downtown. Viewed together, they offer an opportunity to reenvision Downtown as a network of pathways housing commerce and entertainment. They also offer a counter-point to the traffic and street grid, with the potential to present a stage for periodic artistic and cultural programs, such as book fairs, children's festivals, flea markets, and even bike lanes and greenways.

Transmission is a Multi-Modal Hub (an intersection of several modes) with Semi-Overlap of modes. Tram is on the top while buses, bicycles and taxis are on a lower level.
A commercial pedestrian spine pours right into the settlement allowing the commuters a panoramic view into it.
A station is deployed to spread the settlement identity to the surrounding & invite them to settle in and around.

functions & zoning At this new settlement with its anchor being the Transmission station bringing in an influx of much needed energy and flow for the development of the whole area; various modes of transportation are accumulated in one place. The main public mode of transportation is the Tram which moves from the Park at the Northern end to the station at the Sourthern end. For the door to door Bicycles are available through the settlement with bicycle rental points for ease of access and usability. As for regional transportation a bus terminal at the SouthWest end of the station connects settlers with the nearby Ferry Terminal and regional transporation Railway Station. Complimentary services are also available around the main spine of the station with food outlets and various shops.

sustainable approach A study was conducted on Vasari the aim of which was to maximize natural ventilation. The outcome of this study directed the building towards favorabl wind North Eastern direction. This allowed the creation of a wind tunnel that is activated by the presence of a large open plaza constantly exposed to the Sun at the Sourthern End and another shaded plaza at the Northern end. This allows the air flow to be even stronger for better ventilation.
Secondly, the platforms overlooking the central plaza and spine were stepped to create terraces and lookouts and to maximize people's flow in that zone making it the prime circulation of the whole project.

STRUCTURAL & TECHNICAL DESIGN Various technical, environmental and optimization exercises were conducted on this project to ensure its sound and optimum functionality. The structural system was agreed to be steel arches with GRC rough textured cladding ontop to give the rough feel of the rocky mountains all around.
Maquette- Graduation Project 2015 The model was the main item in the submission showing the masses and their interaction with one another and the chosen architectural language.

Abdelhalim Since 1945, the globalization of education and the professionalization of architects and engineers, as well as the conceptualization and production of space, can be seen as a product of battles of legitimacy that were played out in the context of the Cold War and what followed. In this book James Steele provides an informative and compelling analysis of one of Egypt's foremost contemporary architects, Abdelhalim Ibrahim Abdelhalim, and his work during a period of Egypt's attempts at constructing an identity and cultural legitimacy within the post Second World War world order.
Born in 1941 in the small town of Sornaga just south of Cairo, Abdelhalim received his architectural training in Egypt and the United States, and is the designer of over one hundred cultural, institutional, and rehabilitation projects, including the Cultural Park for Children in Cairo, the American University in Cairo campus in New Cairo, the Egyptian Embassy in Amman, and the Uthman Ibn Affan Mosque in Qatar. The first comprehensive study of the work and career of Abdelhalim and his office, the Community Design Collaborative (CDC), which he established in Cairo in 1978, Abdelhalim Ibrahim Abdelhalim: An Architecture of Collective Memory is inspired by Abdelhalim's deep belief in the power of rituals as a guiding force behind various human behaviors and the spaces in which they are enacted and designed to play out. Each chapter is consequently dedicated to one of these rituals and the ways in which some of Abdelhalim's primary commissions have, at all levels of scale, revealed and expressed that ritual. In the sequence presented these are: the rituals of possession, reverence, order, the transmission of knowledge, procession, human institutions, geometry, light, the sense of place, materiality, and finally, the ritual of color.

EFFORTS TO REVIVE THE BOOK
In the process of image selection with the architect, a photography competition was held to solicit images for some of his major projects. The brief stated "Photographers should consider how the Architectural Design of the campus has played a role
The project was initiated as an attempt to publish a book about the works of the architect Abdelhalim Ibrahim one of the pioneers of regionalism in the middle east. It was later uncovered that a draft for a book was written by James Steele back in early 2000s, but the book was never concluded. In 2016, efforts were made to
study the draft, analyze it and reach an evaluation of the reasons for the haulting of the writing/ publishing process. A series of sessions were conducted with Abdelhalim Ibrahim and a group of his disciples to reach enriching information about his philosophy and his projects.
After compiling supportive text and information about those projects and his architectural and urban design philosophy a brief was sent to the writer James Steele along with a long-awaited invitation to resume the book. The images in the book were meticulously selected; image by image to captivate the reader and give a sense of context.

putforth among which 3 winners were selected and more than 3 were used in the book to explain various spaces in the project. A photo book was released on the Closing Ceremony day in which a compilation of the exceptional submissions were included.
The Ceremony included a guided procession tour into the spine of the university from the Portal to the venue, which was selected to capture the essense of the competition in a semi-shaded area. This was followed by refreshments and the Ceremony Exhibition Opening. At which a maquette of the camous was presented along with a curated selected of the images submitted at the competition.

This publication falls within the context of CLUSTER’s broader research endeavor exploring the network of downtown Cairo’s passageways, back alleys, side streets and in-between spaces as an alternative framework for the development and revitalization of Downtown. Viewed together, they offer an opportunity to re-envision Downtown as a network of

pathways housing commerce and entertainment. They also offer a counter-point to the traffic and street grid, with the potential to present a stage for periodic artistic and cultural programs, such as book fairs, children’s festivals, flea markets, and even bike lanes and greenways. highlights, spaces of memory and heritage sites alongside Downtown’s back alleys. It offers a glimpse into a larger body of information, a database on Downtown passageways and in-between spaces that CLUSTER has mapped over three years: including activities, patterns of use, typology and genealogy, materiality and texture, circulation and access, roofing and proportion, in addition to territoriality and tools of demarcation, and other spatial and visual documentation and analysis. The website also features interviews with local community members and stakeholders. The booklet, which is organized around superblocks and walking tours through their passageways, is a companion guide to the Cairo Downtown Passageways website.
