C U R AT E D B Y P H I L I P T S E — ONCE UPON A TIME — The art of storytelling is as old as time. Narrative art works often illustrate well-known historical and religious stories, myths and legends. Visual artists sometimes depict their own stories inviting the viewer to imagine the narrative. Once Upon a Time is a group exhibition by New Zealand and international artists, which focuses on narrative within visual art. Surprising stories unfold, reflecting a mix of cultural identities and approaches to contemporary art making including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and moving image. Artists: Airi Kawana, Fiona Newton, Lalita Smith, Lea-Anne Sheather, Milija Bellic, Monori Kawana, Ong Onlie, Philip Tse, Rozana Lee, Selwyn Vercoe and Vaughan Clements
COCO-MARIA MARTINENGO — MAGIC IS REAL — Joyous expressionist paintings arise from an intimate and lively process of negotiations between three year old, Coco-Maria Martinengo and her mother. While Angelman Syndrome renders Coco-Maria non-verbal and with limited muscle control, paint and canvas - often larger than she is - are a powerful medium of sensory satisfaction and an alternate means of communication. Through this magical mother-daughter dialogue of surrender and control, Coco-Maria's creativity can be shared with the world. SARAH SMITH — NEIGHBOURHOOD — Neighbourhoods can inspire feelings of safety and connection. With her latest body of work titled Neighbourhood, contemporary artist Sarah Smith explores the relationship between a community and what lies outside of its physical and psychological boundaries. Smith is fascinated by distressed techniques more commonly associated with excessive styles of decoration than with minimalism; her genre of choice. She often finds the hardest part about art making is balancing modes of excess and restraint.
JOHL DWYER — COLOUR REDUX — An exhibition of new work by Johl Dwyer in collaboration with writer Ann Poulsen exploring the meaning of colour through poetry and material based sculptural experimentation. The relationship between form and text evolves in scale, from the page of a book to the installation of the work itself. GALLERY 3 21 FEB - 21 MAR OPENING: WEDNESDAY 20 FEB, 5PM
LUCIE BLAZE — B O R N TO C R E AT E — Lucie Blaze’s Born to Create is a celebration of wahine and local heroines. Gathering stories and photographs of women who are impactful and inspirational, Blaze highlights the often overlooked women in our communities. Through this collection of skateboard collages, Blaze hopes communities and young people will be inspired by those around them, proving you don’t need to be famous to make a difference in the world. MELISSA DURBIN — INFOMERCIAL ME T H AT — Connecting art with the everyday Melissa Durbin light-heartedly utilises other artists work to inspire “practical” products intended to reinvigorate dull household chores and mundane personal admin tasks. Video mockcommercials playfully capture the possibility of not coping with careers and the pressures of maintaining, running and cleaning one’s body and home. Durbin questions the often ridiculous, seductive and dissatisfying nature of consumerist culture and its impact.
LINDA JARRETT — ...BUT THE BLACKNESS STILL ABSOLUTE — ...but the blackness still absolute was created through personal experiences and research to explore a visual metaphor that evokes the emotions associated with agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder where the person often feels unsafe in environments and can see no easy way out. This is a condition that often goes unseen and is difficult for others to understand.
GROUP SHOW — EGO MORPHEUS — Ego Morpheus showcases the works of Don Chooi, Christophe Jannin, Tammie Leong, Pritika Lal and Simon Nicholls from Media Design School. Together they present a body of work that represents personal journeys of belonging and performativity. The artists investigate concepts of self, technology, aesthetics and sexuality through a series of paintings, digital prints, video and sculpture.

HAN NAE KIM — MARK AND PROCESS — French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, considered an artist’s canvas a potential space for unconscious visual expression, activated through process. Through the generative process of drawing and using a range of media you will explore methods of mark making which are both spontaneous and considered. Learn how 'The Self' can be an active force for selfexpression and a tool to develop your own personal visual language.
