Out to Lunch HERE & NOW Festival 2017

WELCOME We are celebrating Auckland Theatre Company’s 25th season of plays this year and I’m so delighted with how far we’ve come working with children, young people, and teachers in our Creative Learning programme. Young people are everywhere at ATC! Appearing on stage or working behind the scenes in our annual Here & Now Festival and Summer School, or coming along to every show as ATC Ambassadors, or workshopping with our teaching artists. Regardless of how they get involved they always bring themselves into the work in ways that surprise, excite and challenge us and we really value the input and support we receive from their teachers too.

I like what the philosopher Maxine Greene said about teaching – part of it is helping people create themselves – and I think that is true in some ways about theatre too. One of the great pleasures I enjoy is sitting in a theatre full of young people when the lights go down for the first time. There’s usually a rowdy silence filled with anticipation; ‘oohs’ accompanied by shushes that makes the experience so exciting and vital. Our casts love these school matinees for the energy they get from the audience and I love these moments in the theatre. These lights out ooh-shush moments are the sounds of people who are ready to receive; to take part, to make meaning out of what they see. Theatre doesn’t offer young people answers but it helps them to ask more questions, or think about things differently, or talk about an issue. It helps them to create themselves. I hope you and your students will find much to enjoy in our 2018 Creative Learning season. See you at the theatre.

ACTS OF IMAGINATION - SCHOOL MATINEES Acts of Imagination school matinees are performances of ATC productions scheduled especially for students during the school term. These productions are selected from our 2018 season for their suitability to the classroom and curriculum-related content. After each Acts of Imagination performance there is a Q&A Forum with the cast. You can also add tailor-made student and teacher workshops to your visit. See page 24 for details. In 2018 all our productions take place at Auckland Theatre Company’s home, the ASB Waterfront Theatre in Wynyard Quarter, with the exception of the schools' season of Still Life with Chickens which plays at the Mangere Arts Centre. Booking a bus? You’ll need to know the running time of the show! Estimated running times are listed for every play. However, these may change during rehearsal, so please check the ATC website for the exact duration closer to the performance date, or if in doubt, contact us. Concerned about content? ATC productions may contain mature material*, but sometimes this cannot be confirmed until rehearsals commence. We offer a guide in this brochure and take all measures to inform you if the content changes prior to your performance. Please ensure you check each show page for relevant advisory information. If you require further assistance please contact us. *Please note the detailed advisory for the bonus performance of 1984.

PREFER TO COME TO AN EVENING SHOW? We recommend the Ambassador Forum performances as these are followed by a Q&A Forum with the cast and creative team. (See page 26)

ASB season of

UNDER THE MOUNTAIN By Maurice Gee, adapted by Pip Hall Directed by Sara Brodie

“Go down, People of the Mud!” Rachel and Theo are twins. Apart from having red hair, there’s nothing remarkable about them. Except their psychic powers. These are soon enlisted by Jones, a wise alien out to save the universe from the Wilberforces, a race of giant creatures waking from a spellbound sleep beneath Auckland’s extinct volcanoes, whose sole goal is planetary destruction. Will Rachel and Theo learn to use their powers before the Wilberforces destroy Auckland, and then the world? Recipient of the Margaret Mahy Award, Maurice Gee is one of New Zealand’s best-loved writers. This world premiere production will be directed by Sara Brodie, whose spectacular stage skills were last seen in Auckland Theatre Company’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Enter a theatrical world of wonder full of mystery, magic and master-storytelling.

Under The Mountain was commissioned by Auckland Theatre Company

STILL LIFE WITH CHICKENS By David Mamea Directed by Fasitua Amosa

Mama’s proud of her flourishing veggie garden. So, when she discovers a stray chicken enjoying her greens, her first instinct is to reach for the spade. But what starts as an all-out war develops into a begrudging friendship, as Mama opens up to the chicken about her struggles with her old man, her palagi daughterin-law, her immigrant neighbours and the grandchildren she rarely sees. Through this unlikely friendship Mama learns there’s more to life than waiting for death. A beautiful, beguiling and very funny play about loneliness and the resilience of communities. David Fa’auliuli Mamea has worked on film, television, radio and theatre projects in genres ranging from sci-fi to soap, comedy to horror and documentary to drama. His play Goodbye My Feleni was produced throughout New Zealand in 2013. Still Life with Chickens won the Adam NZ play award (2017) and the Playmarket Best Play by a Pasifika Playwright (2017)

Orwell’s dystopian future is now April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching. Published in 1949, George Orwell’s book helped define the 20th century. Now, 1984 is re-examined in this radical, award-winning international theatrical blockbuster seen by more than a quarter of a million people. An exploration of surveillance and identity, 1984 presented a vision of the future that looks a lot like our present. Orwell’s fiction has become our reality. This stage adaptation is a dynamic, political, technology-enhanced dive into Orwell’s complex vision.

MRS WARREN'S PROFESSION By George Bernard Shaw Directed by Eleanor Bishop

“There are no secrets better kept than the secrets that everybody guesses.” So says Mrs Warren, a genial yet formidable woman, whose clever young daughter Vivie has just graduated from university. However, when she discovers that her expensive education was funded by her mother's earnings from a string of brothels, Vivie’s thoroughly modern worldview is thrown into tumult. Was her mother ever married? Who is her father? Could she be about to marry her own half-brother? With so many mysteries to solve and truths to tell, the two women sit down for a mother-daughter discussion neither will ever forget. Written in 1893, George Bernard Shaw’s play was originally banned by the censors for its subject matter and the hypocrisies it exposed. What continues to shock is how old taboos stay topical and how little things have changed. Celebrated New Zealand theatre-maker Eleanor Bishop (BOYS) returns from New York to direct her own version of this rarely-performed classic that takes a contemporary lens to centuries old questions of sexuality and empowerment.

Kensington Swan season of

THE CHERRY ORCHARD By Anton Chekhov Directed by Colin McColl

The Gayev Family are sociable, intelligent, caring and fun - and hopelessly in debt. Unless they can find the funds, their huge estate, including its much-loved cherry orchard, will go to a mortgagee auction. The entrepreneurial son of their ex-farmhand offers them a solution, but they baulk at his proposal. Wracked by the indecision and unable to comprehend the huge social changes on the horizon, they spend one last summer on their beautiful country property, conjuring memories of the past to mask their fears of the future. Anton Chekhov remains one of the world’s greatest and most compassionate playwrights. His final masterpiece The Cherry Orchard is a tragicomedy: a laughter-through-tears tale told by sad clowns and self-made men. Though it premiered in pre-revolution Russia, its prophetic passion and intimations of the social upheaval to come have a striking resonance for a modern audience in times of change.

EDUCATION PACKS

CURRICULUM LINKS

ATC Education Packs contain valuable information about the show; from synopsis to production background, key themes, design elements and director’s vision. Each Pack includes full page production images.

ATC Education Unit activities relate directly to the PK, UC and CI strands of the NZ Curriculum from levels 5 to 8. They also have direct relevance to many of the NCEA achievement standards at all three levels.

WEB RESOURCES

All secondary school Drama students (Years 9 to 13) should be experiencing live theatre as a part of their course work, Understanding the Arts in Context. Curriculum levels 6, 7 and 8 (equivalent to years 11, 12 and 13) require the inclusion of New Zealand drama in their course of work.

Check the ATC website for new video resources in 2018! atc.co.nz/creative-learning/schoolmatinee-programmme/resources/

" 30

The NCEA external examinations at each level (Level 1 – AS90011, Level 2 – AS91219, Level 3 – AS91518) require students to write about live theatre they have seen. Students who are able to experience fully produced, professional theatre are generally advantaged in answering these questions.

The bus buzzed on the way back to school and the Education Pack was chock full of great information and images.
