He pou atua, he pou whenua, he pou tangata.

Mauri tau, mauri ora!

The symbols of support, of strength and of guardianship stand fast and proud.

The waters of Waitematā ebb and flow against the shores here at Waikōkota, the land upon which we stand.

The pou of remembrance to Māui Tikitiki a Tāranga stands tall as a beacon of courage, of stories passed down and of the history that connects us all to this place and to this space.

We welcome you all from near and far to this house of stories, to the ASB Waterfront Theatre.

Haere Mai Welcome

Welcome to the sixth production of our 2025 season.

Playwright Dennis Kelly’s Girls & Boys has been a sensation in London and New York. Our version has been made by a group of artists I have the highest regard for.

We are delighted by the return of the very in-demand director Eleanor Bishop. While in Auckland directing this production, Eleanor has another at the Edinburgh Fringe, and has just completed her first short film, made as part of A Wave in the Ocean, Dame Jane Campion and Philippa Campbell’s visionary film intensive.

Actor Beatriz Romilly, a well-established name in London, now resident in Aotearoa, caught our attention with her star turn as Edmund in 2023’s King Lear. I had to find Beatriz a play to showcase her extraordinary range, and in Girls & Boys, Beatriz is nothing short of astonishing.

Joining Eleanor and Beatriz is a powerhouse of artists in composer Victoria Kelly, making her debut with Auckland Theatre Company, and much-loved retuners in set and costume designer Tracy Grant Lord, mime director Barnie Duncan, sound designer Te Aihe Butler, and lighting design by Filament Eleven 11’s Rachel Marlow and Bradley Gledhill.

In Girls & Boys, Dennis Kelly is provoking us to think about the potential catastrophic consequences of toxic male identity. He asks us to consider what led to the particular events of this story. This story is fictional, but rooted in the brutal facts. In the tradition of ancient Greek theatre, most pertinently exemplified in Euripides’ Medea, we, the spectator, look directly at the tragedy. By staring it in face we may not find an answer, as art rarely offers a neat solution, but in the apotheosis we experience theatrical catharsis; a release of emotions.

DENNIS KELLY | Playwright

Dennis Kelly is an internationally acclaimed writer, with plays performed in more than 30 countries. He received a Tony Award for Matilda The Musical. Stage plays include Debris (Theatre 503/ Battersea Arts Centre, 2003), Osama the Hero (Hampstead Theatre, 2004), After the End (Paines Plough, Traverse Theatre, Bush Theatre, 2005), Love and Money (Young Vic/Manchester Royal Exchange, 2006), Taking Care of Baby (Hampstead Theatre/Birmingham Repertory, 2007), DNA (National Theatre, 2008), Orphans (Paines Plough, Traverse Theatre, Soho Theatre and Birmingham Rep, 2009), The Gods Weep (Royal Shakespeare Company, 2010), The Ritual Slaughter of Gorge Mastromas (Royal Court, 2013), Girls and Boys (Royal Court, 2017) and The Regression (Berliner Ensemble, 2021). For Television Dennis co-wrote/ created Pulling (BBC3, BBC2, 2006-09), wrote/created Utopia (Channel Four, 2013-14), wrote/created The Third Day (Sky & HBO, 2020), and wrote/created the Bafta winning Together (BBC2, 2021). For film he wrote the screenplay for Black Sea, directed by Kevin MacDonald and most recently adapted his book of Matilda The Musical (Sony, Netflix, 2022) for the screen to wide acclaim.

Note from the Director

At the heart of great theatre is great writing and it’s been a pleasure to delve deeply into the brilliant play that is Girls & Boys .

While making this production, I’ve been thinking a lot about motherhood and the ways in which we raise children, the unconscious messages we might be passing on, how good we’ve become at examining gender and power imbalances, and how much we still don’t see. How trivial it can seem these days to talk about various identifiers like gender but, actually, how tectonic these forces are.

What I love about Girls & Boys is how Dennis Kelly’s play encompasses all of this, straddling the intimate and the epic, the mundane and the profound. I trust we will all recognise something of ourselves, or those we know, in the story.

It is always a privilege to get to work on the ASB Waterfront stage, a stage which demands big ideas, big feelings and requires us all to dig deep. I’m excited to see this work meet you, the audience and to see what you will take from it. Thank you for being here.

ELEANOR BISHOP | Director

Eleanor Bishop is a director and writer working across theatre, opera and film. She has been described as “one of New Zealand’s most daring, intelligent, and political directors” (The Theatre Times).

She works closely with writer/performer Karin McCracken as EBKM and their works include Gravity & Grace, Heartbreak Hotel and Yes Yes Yes. The latter is an award-winning play about consent for young people, which has toured to Australia, Canada, Serbia and Iceland and been translated into multiple languages. EBKM was the winner of the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award in 2022, the first time in the awards history it has been given to a partnership.

Eleanor has a long association with Auckland Theatre Company and her highlights for the company include BOYS (adapted from Greg McGee’s Foreskin’s Lament) and a new online version of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, produced during the pandemic. In 2023 and 2024, she is a member of Jane Campion’s Pop Up Film Intensive, A Wave in the Ocean, supported by Netflix, and she has just shot her first short film.

Synopsis

It’s a story we’re all familiar with: an unexpected meeting at an airport leads to an intense and passionate love, where the two fall head-over-heels for each other. It doesn’t take long for the pair to settle down, buy a house, have two squabbling kids – Leanne and Danny, and get lost in the mundane domestic life. But the relationship unravels as her star continues to rise and his starts to fade, and with this unravelling comes a drastic and heartbreaking turn of events.
