Note from Auckland Theatre Company

As the astonishing denouement of the TV series Succession played out last May, our Artistic Associate Benjamin Kilby-Henson and I revisited the plays of Lucy Prebble to consider ways in which we might keep the excitement going.

Ben had directed the New Zealand premiere of The Effect in 2017 under his Fractious Tash moniker and as we talked, the National Theatre in London announced a revival with an updated text: a production now playing on Broadway. It was the moment.

I am a fan of revivals. I want us to revisit plays of the canon, recent and historic, anew. As new generations of audiences engage with theatre-going, I want to share with them great texts in thrilling new productions. And so it is with this new version of The Effect.

This bold new production, directed by Ben, with an entirely new team of collaborators, makes full use of the beautiful big stage at our home, ASB Waterfront Theatre. The concept is at once expansive and intimate. The four actors who accepted our

invitations have been a dream in every respect; committed, skilled, hard-working and glorious people to be around.

I offer our heartfelt thanks to Aucklanders, who are the principal investors in Auckland Theatre Company through their rates. We take seriously our responsibility to be a theatre company for our city, to embrace new stories and communities, and to entertain.

Our 2024 Youth Theatre Company has formed and is under way creating new work and learning new skills. It is on a trajectory to be on stage in Joni Nelson’s new play, For Country, in July and, later on, in our new production of Peter Pan with Nightsong. A shoutout to the generous Youth Company Supporters Group, led by Peter Macky and Joan Vujcich, who make this work possible.

It’s our privilege to make theatre for you. Enjoy.

Note from the Director

No matter what we put into our bodies, love will always be the most potent drug.

Or so we like to believe, perhaps need to believe, in a time when depression rates are climbing exponentially and where decisions in this world appear to be the antithesis of aroha.

Somehow, the optimism bias of our chemical and physical makeup, however, keeps us striving for that most intoxicating and addictive of feelings – the dopamine hit of love. From the electrifying kindling of a new relationship, to the deeper blossoming of long-term companionship, love still has the power to overtake our rational brains and turn us to gooey-eyed mush.

And as a result, it is no wonder that love is the inspiration for some of the world’s most passionate art. From pop songs, to pulpy fiction novels, from sonnets to sizzling rom-coms, it is love with which we are fascinated and of which we are enamoured. In many ways the human race is in love with love.

No less so here, with Lucy’s Prebble’s smart, incisive and messy

exploration of the dopamine hit inside our brains that tells us what we’re feeling is love. Prebble gives us a quartet of complex characters, whose relationships echo and reflect one another, all offering exploration – but no definitive answers – over the complex, nuanced and, often-times, murky territory of human emotion. The deftness of the writing is somehow both a joyous celebration and a painful autopsy. You’re in for a very good time!

None of this would be possible without the laser-like talent of this small but mighty cast. Their love and support of one another throughout the process has been inspiring and humbling. In the hands of some of the very best production team, we’ve been able to create – both visually and sonically – a fresh and steely arena within which these complex relationships can be bonded, be ignited and crumble.

To the actors. To the team. To aroha. To love. To kisses that make your heart explode into fireworks. To my Jack.

Benjamin is one of New Zealand’s leading theatre directors, who has forged a diverse career spanning form, scale and medium, including original works, scripted premieres and opera.

Prior to working in New Zealand, Benjamin worked for one of the UK’s largest youth arts organisations, leading participatory projects for primarily at-risk youth, including taking six productions a year to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for nine consecutive years. Ben later trained in theatre direction at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, London, while continuing to direct for the London Fringe and cabaret circuit. Following projects in Germany and France, Ben was director in residence at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford.

Ben teaches in Auckland’s drama schools and is Artistic Manager of The Actors’ Program, Aotearoa’s leading training ground for actors with one of the highest employment rates in the country.

Under theatre collective Fractious Tash, Ben has received critical acclaim for Earnest, Not Psycho and Titus, which was then remounted for a sell-out season at the Pop-up Globe (featuring Beyoncé covers by New Zealand’s only steelpan band...).

The award-winning production of Last Tapes’ Valerie toured throughout New Zealand, following dates in Australia and Edinburgh, adding to its accolade the coveted Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

In 2023, Benjamin co-directed King Lear for Auckland Theatre Company. The acclaimed production was seen by more than 14,000 patrons. He continued a year with The Bard by directing Something Rotten! for The Court Theatre, Christchurch. The celebrated musical was seen by more than 17,000 patrons and will return to The Court in July for a repeat season to meet demand.

Benjamin is the Artistic Associate and Casting Director at Auckland Theatre Company.

Synopsis

Two lovers. Two doctors. One drug trial.

When Connie and Tristan sign up for a clinical trial to test a new antidepressant, they fall for each other. Hard. Sealed off from the outside world, they’re ready to break all the rules. But are their feelings real or nothing more than a side effect from the drug that’s firing a dopamine hit to their brains?

Overseeing the experiment are Dr Lorna James and Dr Toby Sealey. The two doctors find themselves entangled in the personal and ethical dilemmas that arise as the experiment unfolds.

This chemical romance keeps you guessing as it asks: which is more powerful – the head or the heart?
