Hi Guys & Dolls... Indian artist ADGRMS is on this month’s cover with a natural country setting to show his refreshing character, this wraps around to the back cover. There’s a lot of cool new music around right now, I’m particularly enjoying MK - 17 as well as Marshmallo - Find Me. As for the Big Shaq trend, it’s not my cup of tea, but it is interesting to see how someone can rise up into fame so quickly with a gimmick that a lot of people can laugh with and share together. We’re excited to be supporting Urban Pulse this year with their upcoming event in Mauritius with Walshy Fire, 1st December. In this issue, Sarah’s Thoughts shares her gratitude for music and how it has been by her side through life. I chat with young electronic artist ADGRMS about his career so far, he also delivers helpful advice to aspiring musicians. Tamara lays down the law, discussing cover songs and copyright issues surrounding them. REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR MUSIC 1. It had made you dance as if no one was watching, even if someone was watching, or no one was actually watching (can I get a singing in the shower?!) 2. It has made you cry when you really needed to, and has given you the feeling that someone else understands 3. It has given you an experience where you forget everything happening in the world, and you are able to enjoy the NOW 4. It has connected you with other people, whether online or in person. Someone else likes the sounds you enjoy, and it brings us together in human nature 5. It has passed the time, whether on a train to work or a long car ride. Music can shape someone’s day 6. We plan parts of our future based on music – what song will be the first dance, what song will be played at our funeral. Heck, that music may not have even been written yet. 7. It gives you adrenaline, whether you are about to crush a work out, pass a test, ace an interview, or ask that person out, music can give us a state of mind where we can conquer anything 8. It makes life more romantic – can you imagine love scenes in movies without music? That would be awkward, in my opinion. Not only movies, those slow dances in real life made the moment that much more sweet with the right romantic song paired to it 9. It holds memories – there are some songs out there that have the power to instantly smile or cringe, depending on whatever personal memory you have attached to it. 10. It is one of the only things that IS for everybody. I have yet to meet one person that hates music. There is a genre for every person, trait, race, sexuality, religion, personality type, and is a key ingredient to uniting us all as one. Cue Michael Jackson - We Are The World 10

“ADGRMS” is actually only the short form for “Audio Germs” which was how this project started. To explain why “Audio” because that’s what I make and “Germs” because they spread even if you don’t want them to. So the ultimate goal is to keep making audio that spreads like germs haha.

COPYRIGHT LAW ISSUES REGARDING COVER SONGS If an artist wants to make a cover, he/ she must ask an owner of the song or a management of an artist a permission to make a cover. Then, agreements are signed. Otherwise if an artist copies another’s work and pass it off as her/his own, then they’re guilty of plagiarism, unless they can show that the similarity was completely coincidental and that there was no way that he/she could have heard the work they’re accused of copying. There is a very fine line to be drawn between sound-alikes, parody and plagiarism. There are numerous of cases when well-known artists receive lawsuits because they used someone’s original riffs, rhythm, melodies, arrangements, thus sometimes even similarities between songs may be insubstantial, or just due to serendipity. For example, the $5.3 million punishment against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for infringing Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" to create "Blurred Lines" made quite a loud noise throughout the music industry."Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams was released in 2013. Two years later, the song made the headlines as a case of plagiarism. The initial claims were talking about the overall sound being similar to "Got To Give It Up", a song released by Marvin Gaye in 1977. Eight details of similarity of
the songs were discovered, five of those details related to the melodies, one to the melody of the bassline and two to the arrangement. In this case this trial is unique, because subtle signs of inspiration were presented as "substantial similarities" then blown up to direct one-to-one copies. The jury decision in the "Blurred Lines" case defies the traditional legal understanding of music copyright, according to a number of legal experts. In the past, you've generally had to show that a song copied a series of notes, as in a melody or a set of lyrics, in order to prove copyright infringement. The problem is "Blurred Lines" doesn't rip either of those from the Gaye song. Instead, it has a "vibe" close to that of "Got to Give It Up," owing to their similar rhythm pattern and certain production choices like voices murmuring in the back of the mix. And vibe was not something you used to be able to put on trial. On Friday 6 October 2017, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has heard oral arguments in the appeal of the "Blurred Lines" lawsuit. During the appeal a legal error was argued. It should be noted that before the mid-1970s, sound recordings weren't protectable under copyright law. Congress changed that, but
19
given that Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" was one of the last songs before the legislative change went into effect, his family was forced to litigate the "Blurred Lines" case under a certain disadvantage that no modern music creator would today face. Only protectable elements were given weight — and according to U.S. District Judge John Kronstadt, that meant forgoing any analysis of Gaye's original "Got to Give It Up" recording. Instead, what's protectable is whatever was expressed by the sheet music deposited at the U.S. Copyright Office. Jurors never got to hear Gaye's original song. Instead, each side had musicologists testifying about that sheet music and whether there was any substantial similarity.
signs of plagiarism. However, since the criteria are hard to compile and even hard to get accepted, quick results are not to be expected. For example, Fraunhofer IDMT's (Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT in Ilmenau) "PlagiarismAnalyzer" detects identical melodies and samples (whole portions of a song) in a matter of seconds. To do this, mathematical algorithms identify the tonal spectrum of the copy and the original and then compare the two. In the UK, as in the USA, a copyright is secured when something is fixed in tangible form. Unlike in the USA, there is no need for registration, and in fact there is no registration procedure. It’s not a bad idea, however, to mail a recording of the song to yourself, or to your solicitor, to prove the date on which it was created.
According to the Gayes, regardless of the fact that sound recordings weren't protected under the 1909 Copyright Act, what the iconic Motown musician actually created provides the best evidence of what In general, when a cover song is was copyrighted. performed in public place without any permission, then a venue is the Can the class of "substantial one, who’s responsible for using the similarities" be narrowed down? cover song. Facebook also has such implemented program, but it identifies and deletes cover videos. Facebook so far do not permit to share cover videos.

Through my spiritual journey, I have experienced the love that can come from above. Whatever you might be going through, if you let go and let God, there will always be a way. He provides with all answers to our prayers, pains, rough moments, and whatever might drag us to the darker side. There is light, there is hope, salvation and most of all Love for whoever you are. That one song really expresses that feeling. I am not going to be too expressive with words as it might lose its very sense. Crowder with his unique voice and sensitivity utterly says it all.

George Michael: Live in London
George Michael: Freedom The 1 x 90' newly commissioned film will be a very personal documentary revealing how the boy from north London became one of the most influential recording artists of all time and helped to re-write the rules of the music industry and celebrity. The success of his first solo album Faith resulted in him becoming one of the few artists who could shift millions of albums worldwide. This was a dream scenario for the label but he had different plans. This resulted in a difference in opinion between him and the label over how the follow-up album Listen Without Prejudice was promoted. - 14th September 2016, Channel 4 Press Just over a year later since this initial announcement, the documentary film aired on Channel 4 on 16th October 2017. The film had been scheduled to broadcast earlier than this, however, George Michael passed away a few days after working on the project. This is his final piece of work. Unbeknowingly, his final memento of himself to the world. 26
www.AudationMagazine.com
George Michael provided the commentary and worked with David Austin to create the film. David explains that what we see is mostly edited by George himself and left as untouched as it could be, excepting minor edits and additions. The two had been friends, since only a few months of being born, through their mothers meeting. They grew up together and worked together, their earliest musical journey told by David Austin, "I got a guitar at 6 and George was a drummer, that ís what he started out doing and he sort of played on the pillows and I played the guitar and I’ve got these recordings actually and believe it or not, the first song we wrote was called “The Music Maker of the World". The film is introduced by Kate Moss in the black chair adorned with speakers from the song 'Fast Love'. The title sequence commences with fiery visuals together with a stunning rendition of 'Fast Love' by Adele. His life story is told as he wanted to tell it. His rise to popularity and how he felt at each moment. It was especially poignant when the topic came to his beloved Anselmo. He explained the highs and the lows. The pain when he lost his love. The fact that a lot of his life was then devoted and inspired by his love. A pure, timeless feeling. The fact that they were parted did not stop this love. It also pushed him to fight the cause for the music industry. George wanted to break free from the system, and that defiance is so incredibly amazing because it can’t have been easy when everything was against him. Yet, he stuck to what he believed in. Music should not ever be limited, should not ever be restrained. Creativity cannot blossom when boxed into rules and regulations. It is also very cool that he didn’t want that limelight. He refused to promote the releases in the media himself, because he just wanted to keep the pleasure of his passion and not have any attention. Even in this documentary about himself, he only commentates and does not show his face. His greatness will continue to influence us all to do what we want, how we want to do it regardless of the battles we shall face. ‘Rise Again’ by Mon Frere ft Kate Wild is outstanding. A majestic production with strong power contrasted against subdued tones throughout the verses. The passionate vocals share great emotion. The lyrics tell a story we all know too well. How long till I find my strength again? How long before I see my fear surrender? I’ll choke as I fight to catch my breath But I’ll sing until I’m standing tall. Rise Again is all about dealing with mental health issues that so many people suffer these days. ‘Without You’ by Tempo Elektrik is a tune which is instantly likeable and you could easily hear in the charts. A bright dance sound, smooth male vocals with a slight edge from the distinct high voice clips. The Scott Diaz remix brings the underground club style with a darker tone. Next up leading the talent at OneFold is label heavyweight Tempo Elektrik, who's giving us slight rave nostalgia with his new track, 'Without You'. Serving up a fresh take on synthesised vocals and fist-pumping bass, this lyrically-led mover is packed with more than enough energy to satisfy any crowd. Completing the single is a mellow, deeper interpretation of the attention grabbing original courtesy of producing talent Scott Diaz (Simma Black). The video compliments the song with colourful (clothing included, I would love to know that stylist) and sensual imagery - a man’s haven, lounging by the pool surrounded by exotic women. The long-awaited club banger from AfroBeats all-star Stunnah Gee entitled International Girl is now available! The track has the slick production style and distinctive vocals fans have come to know and love from Stunnah Gee. International Girl features a glossy, fun music video aimed at empowered women of all cultures. Produced by the talented and prolific producer P2j, the song centres around Stunnah’s description of a special lady in his life; being a goddess in his view, with her best features originating from cultures around the globe. “I’m inspired by women in general, but I wanted to appreciate ladies from all around the world. What is different from anything I’ve done before is that this song has a very international-pop feel. It’s a different sound, it’s a different style. I can’t wait for my fans to hear it!” Stunnah Gee www.soundcloud.com/stunnah-gee 39
‘Secret Stash, Vol. 1’ is a spirited collection of music. The mix of soulful and funky sounds take your mind away to the sunset parties or back in time to wonderful moments, whilst the deeper tracks fuel the underground rave. Stashed Music follow a string of rapturously-received EPs with their first VA compilation Secret Stash Vol.1, featuring new and exclusive music from DJ S.K.T, Carnao Beats, GAWP and a host of up-and-coming house talent. Launched earlier this year and already making its mark on the underground, Stashed Music is a new label founded by prolific electronic artist DJ S.K.T, who has teamed up with a number of like-minded childhood and music industry friends, each of whom brings their own unique experiences, knowledge and passion to the table. From the outset, Stashed Music’s remit has been to unearth raw new talent as well champion established producers: talent that is not afraid to push the boundaries of modern house music. That mission is in full effect on their latest release, a various artists compilation featuring 11 original tracks, all of which are exclusive to this collection. Kicking off with a quality club roller from DJ S.K.T himself, the compilation shines a light on a rich vein of relatively undiscovered house talent. Every track featured has that little something extra that sets it apart: from intricate percussive grooves and fat basslines to delicate melodies and infectious vocals, this is the raw sound of the house underground. www.soundcloud.com/stashedmusic 40

Mercury by ‘Parsifal’ is a well-crafted track taking you along a journey through the universe. Each little element is beautifully worked in with lots of intrigue the ear. This comes with equally interesting remixes from Specialivery, Tommy J Gren and Mess Me. Parsifal is a swiss-italian music producer & dj based in Paris. Strongly influenced by a plethora of music’s styles, his productions have evolved from classic bass house to a more blended style with Deep and Tech House, characterized by a groovy defined drums elements rich with wide cinematic synths and sounds ambiances. After having remixed acts like Antoine Clamaran and having released on labels like Vamos Music, Pacha Rec. and Caballero Rec., Parsifal returns on Kinesen, releasing a powerful and clubby tune still keeping his incisive sound identity. www.kinesen.net 41
‘I RECKON’ BY SEAN MATHEWS IS A LOVELY LIGHT AND ATMOSPHERIC TRANCER. BACK WITH A BANG, SEAN MATHEWS IS BACK ON INFRASONIC WITH HIS NEWEST PRODUCTION MASTERPIECE 'I RECKON'. TAKING ALL THE TYPICAL MATHEWS HALMARKS AND SPRINKLING IT WITH SOME ADDED ATMOSPHERIC FINESE, SEAN COMES UP WITH A LUSH FUSION OF A LAID BACK GROOVE, LUSH TRANCE MELODIES AND SUBTLE CLASSIC NUANCES FROM BACK IN THE DAY. IT'S SEAN'S ATTENTION TO DETAIL IN HIS PRODUCTIONS THAT REALLY SET HIS TRACKS APART FROM THE REST, AND 'I RECKON' IS ANOTHER FINE EXAMPLE OF THAT. WWW.INFRASONICRECORDINGS.COM

’Sweden’ by Vibbar is kind of manic at first! Then you hit replay, you rewatch that video, you get into the groove and feel that easy-going vibe. It’s a pretty cool with a great variety in all the elements pieced together. An amalgamation of sounds, influences and voices, ‘Sweden’ is the perfect illustration of the fact the group is built on ‘vibes’. Catchy bars flirt with percussion as the melodic instrumental takes you on a journey through hazy fade outs before bursting back in to its rhythmic life via amped up bass and crystal clear production. Visually the video captures the collectives boundless charisma which is immersed with creative flair. From the cutting edge of rap to the forefront of fashion, Vibbar represent effortless cool. “Originally the song was a sample by a garage artist/Dj from back in the day called Lonyo. We sampled his hit 'Summer of love' and originally used that title, to pay homage. We wanted to keep the energy of our original take on the song so made a new beat with a similar vibe. We then decided to call the song 'Sweden', after the country which is the inspiration behind the whole collective, hence the name Vibbar (Vibe in Swedish)” - VIBBAR Vibbar’s uncomplicated love for what they do and their changeable talents allow them to morph in to any role required for them to continue their own evolution as a collective. To date they have DJ’d and collaborated with numerous brands and hosted guest appearances on their tracks from Big Narstie, Wiley and JME, amongst others, plus they host their own weekly show every Monday from 5pm on Radar Radio. With the release of ‘Sweden’, they are on the brink of even more new conquests. www.facebook.com/vibbarmusic 43
‘We March On’ by Hannah V ft Natalie Williams is beautiful. The first vocal section almost reminds me of an old wartime song, keeping the world strong through dark times. Then the main section enters to reveal the contemporary soul sound. A stunning piano performance brings it altogether. The powerful and passionate air takes over and you allow your mind to be submerged by it. Blackjack provides a naughty DnB remix full of attitude and empowerment. I love the accompanying video with the story of heartache following through to finding herself again, all this in-between the studio performance with pretty rose gold definition. www.soundcloud.com/hannahvofficial

‘Haunted Spaces EP’ by Document One is a killer DnB set to get you through the night. Since Document One’s first release on Technique Recordings, they’ve formulated a particularly volatile compound of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and tech. And they’ve proven its effectiveness by chalking up enviable levels of radio airplay, DnB chart status, and rave destruction. Now, there’s a brand new five-track EP to deliver another dose. This time, Document One are exploring the darker side of their nature, guiding us into the shadows with the upright-bass-meets-murderminded- rap of Haunted Spaces. The EP’s title track builds through a sparse intro into a rhythmically-twisted drop. The punch and snap of kick and snare are coupled with a driving fusion of natural and synthetic basses. There’s a heartbeat of dancefloor funk, but this is no laid-back, casual groove. It’s a gritty, evil piece of music that sets the template for the rest of the release. This EP is set to reconfigure our expectations of Document One. It has their production fingerprints all over it, but presented in a different, more midnight-tinged, package. It just goes to show the artistry in their style, and it’s clear these tracks are another milestone in the onwards-andupwards Doc One progression. www.techniquerecordings.co.uk 45
Love Love Love. ‘Space Between’ by Apex ft Ayah Marar is a classic. The lively DnB track and an immensely catchy hook from a beautiful vocalist. The is a part of Hospital Records ‘Weapons Of Mass Creation 3’ compilation. More favourites include ‘Avalon’ by Cyantific and ‘Starting Over’ by Blu Mar Ten. Popping off like a roadside incendiary, the third installment of Hospital's Weapons of Mass Creation series is back with a bang. Just when you thought it was safe to fileshare another MP3, we're taking our guerrilla war back to the streets with an outstanding collection of insurgent beats. www.hospitalrecords.com 46
